2011 Outlook: A school playing a full 8-AAAAA region schedule in just its second year of existence can expect a rough time of it, but the Tigers had a lot to be proud of last season. They lost by four points to both Duluth and Dacula, and defeated Shiloh and fellow start-up Mountain View. Senior QB Jarvis Holley (1,252 yards passing, 5 TDs, 7 INTs, 501 yards rushing) should be improved, and LB Derrick Parker (79 tackles) will lead the defense into another tough schedule.

The Wildcats will again employ a ball-control, grind-it-out offensive style to try and keep a smaller defense off the field. Special teams are a question mark with the departure of K/P Guy Hunt.

The running back position is fairly deep with senior Dean Ewing moving over from his role as a slot receiver. WR Marquaze Maddox was the leading receiver last year. Brian Smith comes over from Hebron Christian in Gwinnett to lead East Jackson, and admits he has a lot to work on. RB C.J. 2011 Outlook: The Hawks are coming off a surprising run in the playoffs, making the quarterfinals after finishing the regular season at 5-5. The team returns multi-talented signal caller John Russ for his senior season; Russ led a potent offense in 2010 and finished with 2,245 yards passing with 21 TDs and 842 yards rushing with 6 scores. Mill Creek will have to replace its top two receivers and top two running backs, however. On defense, the Hawks return seven starters, but could be affected by key losses at linebacker. Senior LB Taylor Coleman is a top college prospect.

2011 Outlook: The biggest loss for the Bears will be QB Charlie Brower, who threw for over 1,000 yards in Mountain View’s first varsity campaign. The fledgling program will rely on returning starters RB/DB Marvin Elam (622 yards rushing, 9 TDs), RB/OLB Eddie West (189 yards rushing) and WR Frederick Hill for production. The Bears will have decent experience on defense with OLB Tyler Bethune (35 tackles, 2 INTs) and DB Josh Briggman (41 tackles) returning as leaders. Mountain View might be a few years away from true competitiveness in Gwinnett County.

The wide receivers are again a strong unit, with Jason Croom back as the top threat (506 yards receiving, 5 TDs) and J.T. Colbert ready to take on a bigger role. The defense is another story with only two returning starters. FB/LB Tanner Maloof and SS Martavious Edwards will have to provide leadership for an inexperienced unit. But returning starter Scotty Hosch emerged as the point man for the North Gwinnett offense last season with his efficiency (1,006 yards passing on 63.1 percent completions, 14 TDs to 3 INTs) and smarts. The running game will be in good hands with junior Donnie Miles and senior Ethan Kilgore back at the top of the rotation, but there were major losses on the line. Curry, to county rival Flowery Branch, leaving Bradley Brown and Andrew Smith to compete for the job under center. RB Imani Cross gained over 600 yards last season despite missing about half the year with an Achilles injury; he will be the focus of the Trojans’ run-dominated attack behind a solid offensive line. 2011 Outlook: The Titans haven’t won less than seven games in a season under sixthyear head coach Terry Tuley, and this should be another winning year with a proven leader at QB returning for his senior season. Solid signal caller Blake Gaubert gets help from RG Joseph Scelfo, perhaps the team’s most coveted college prospect at an athletic 6-2, 275 pounds. On defense, the secondary must find new leadership after three of the unit’s four 2010 starters graduated. Another region title should be the goal for the Titans.

2011 Outlook: The Titans are slightly more experienced this year, but still very young all around. Though 15 starters return, freshmen and sophomores fill the top of the depth chart. QB Evan Jacks will have to adapt to a brand new wide-open offense, but will get help with a speedy backfield; T.J. Brown, Justin Jackson and Terrance Upshaw all will get carries. WR Austin Rose should see a big spike in production with the new scheme. Defensively, S A.J. Pearson could be the team’s best college prospect. The linebacking unit will be experienced.

TE Colby Smith was the team’s leading receiver last year, and should become even more of a weapon as a senior. QB Billy Best is back for a second year as starter and will have Diandre Atwater (655 yards rushing) to hand the ball to. There is also a talented group of wide receivers, starting with Joe Horn and Ahmad Harris, who should get more touches this year. Massive OT Alex Jauregui (6-7, 300 pounds) patrols the line. He will have some raw talent to work with especially at wide receiver and in the defensive backfield. RB Deshawn Taylor will have to step up, as he will start for the first time, and WRs Clayton Smith and Olandrick Ellis bring speed on the outside. 2011 Outlook: The Comets will look to rebuild on the offensive side of the ball after losing most of their major skill players. QB Jordan Ramey will have a tall task in replacing Kent Rollins (2,327 yards passing), but showed well in limited action last season. WR L.J. Gainey is the team’s leading returning pass catcher with 253 yards, and should step into a marquee role. Questions remain in the running game, where Coach John Small will have to rely upon inexperienced players. The defense could stand to improve after giving up big some big point totals last year.

Highly touted DE Josh Dawson and LB Jacob Sealand, both Vanderbilt commits, will keep the pressure on the opposition.
