ACC Preview ACC Atlantic Boston College  2010 Record: 7-6 (4-4)

Even though BC has been bowling for a dozen years in a row, confidence has dwindled. They need to take advantage of the early home games.

Clemson

2010 Record: 6-7 (4-4)

Florida State

2010 Record: 10-4 (6-2)

Maryland

2010 Record: 9-4 (5-3)

NC State

2010 Record: 9-4 (5-3)

Wake Forest

2010 Record: 3-9 (1-7)

Is a huge recruiting class and a returning veteran offense enough for Dabo Swinney to keep his job? Eight wins and a quality bowl game would help. Is Florida State back on the top? Jimbo Fisher has built a talented team and E.J. Manuel looks to be ready to open up the offense. Even with a 9-4 season that ended with a bowl victory, a coaching change was made. Randy Edsall comes from Connecticut to take the helm. Can the Terps compete for an ACC title? Coach O’Brien suffers a big loss at the QB position, so we’ll see if the newer pieces he’s put into place will help them to keep moving forward. Tough times continue for Wake Forest. They only have one easy game on their schedule, Gardner-Webb. Could be another low win season for the Demon Deacons.

ACC Coastal Duke

2010 Record: 3-9 (1-7)

Georgia Tech

2010 Record: 6-7 (4-4)

Miami

2010 Record: 7-6 (5-3)

North Carolina

2010 Record: 8-5 (4-4)

David Cutcliffe has made progress for the Blue Devils, but needs to win more games. More passing, stronger defense should result in an upset or two. The Yellow Jackets are coming off their worst season since 1996. Many changes on both sides of the ball, will it be enough to turn this program around to compete for a conference title again? The Canes hire new coach in a search to recapture the golden years. Coach Al Golden will need to improve the offensive turnovers if they want to compete in the ACC. Suspensions, scandals and a firing of Butch Davis keeps a dark cloud over the UNC program. Interim Coach Everett Withers will have his hands full. The bright spot is the defense, who can keep them in every game.

Virginia

2010 Record: 4-8 (1-7)

Virginia Tech

2010 Record: 11-3 (8-0)

Coach London has one year under his belt and some of the pieces are starting to come together. More production out of the offense could lead to a bowl game with seven home games. Consistency is the name of the game for Beamer ball, that’s why they are always in the top tier of the ACC. Can they pull off back to back ACC titles?

The Bears have come a long way under Art Briles, seven wins, first winning season since 1995 and a bowl game. However, they still have to compete in a tough conference; another bowl game will be progress. Third year for Paul Rhoads, progress has been made, more is needed. Defense need a stand out season and the offense a decent one to win six games this year. Back to back disappointing seasons will put more pressure on Turner Gill in his second season. The Jayhawks will need some good surprises and big plays from the WR Daymond Patterson to win five games this year. Even coming off a season that saw bad defense and an inconsistent passing game, the Wildcats will be a factor this year. Can Bill Snyder keep moving this team forward? Seven wins and a bowl game would solidify it. Mizzou looks to get over the hump this year, will it be enough to contend for the Big XII Championship. Are they the second or third best team in the conference? What’s it going to take for the Sooners to get back to a national championship game? The talent is always there, but injuries had plagued them. A key win, outside of conference games, will be against Florida State in Tallahassee, who they beat to win their last national title in 2001.

Oklahoma State  2010 Record: 11-2 (6-2)

The Cowboys are poised to compete for the Big 12 title. Road games to Texas and Texas A&M and a home game against Oklahoma will be the big tests. Should be a 10+ win season.

Texas

2010 Record: 5-7 (2-6)

Texas A&M

2010 Record: 9-4 (6-2)

The panic button has been pressed. Texans demand a Big XII title, not winning it is a huge disappointment. Can Mack Brown fill the holes and get back to a ten win season this year? Will Texas A&M be the team that played the first half of last season or the second half? If the second half, it’s the Big 12 title or bust. They are loaded with talent and experience. They haven’t had a double digit winning season since 1998. This could be the year.

BIG EAST Preview Cincinnati  2010 Record: 4-8 (2-5) A lot changed after losing Brian Kelly to ND, including a winning season. Can Butch Jones turn it around and get Cincinnati back in the hunt for a Big East title? Connecticut   2010 Record: 8-5 (5-2) Will the departure of Randy Edsall to Maryland hurt the consistency of eight plus win seasons? Huskies’ fans not only expect a bowl, but to also compete for the Big East title. Louisville  2010 Record: 7-6 (3-4) Louisville looks to be strong, Charlie Strong this year, but with a modest veteran group returning, he will need to rebuild some key pieces. Pittsburgh  2010 Record: 8-5 (5-2) It’s the end of the Wannstedt era and many are happy. Can Todd Graham install his system quickly enough to finish above .500 and help build a foundation for the future? Rutgers  2010 Record: 4-8 (1-6) Ten starters from the offense return to try and make up for disastrous 2010, will more experience equal more production? Bowling should be the goal. South Florida  2010 Record: 8-5 (3-4) Skip Holtz enters his second year as expectations have grown. Less experience on the offense and tough schedule will challenge this team. Need more conference wins. Syracuse  2010 Record: 8-5 (4-3) The Orange long for the ‘90s when they were major bowl players. Can Doug Marrone continue to turn the ship around? Schedule isn’t too difficult, seven home games and easy nonconference games. West Virginia  2010 Record: 9-4 (5-2) Mountaineers saw the forced resignation of Bill Stewart in June due to allegations of trying to hurt Dana Holgorsen’s reputation. The conference is up for grabs so he could have a shot to extend their nine-year postseason streak.

Progress was made last year by Ron Zook and excitement is building with emerging star QB Nathan Scheelhaase. Strong athletes on both sides of the ball. He will have to win the first four games and two conference games to get where they haven’t been in 17 years, a bowl game.

2010 Record: 11-2 (7-1)

Brady Hoke inherits drama from Rich Rodriguez, but also an offense that works. Defense is loaded and the offense has many returning parts. Michigan State is coming off their best regular season in decades, but ended the season with a pounding by Alabama. To compete in the new Big 10, the Spartans will need to win on the road. Returning experience, a strong new leader in Jerry Kill, is it enough for the Gophers to climb out of their hole? Starting out with USC will not be easy. The Big Red may find their new conference tougher, but they have a chance to compete for the Legends. QB Taylor Martinez has huge potential. The loss of Dan Persa was a huge impact on the 7-3 start for Northwestern last year. Three blowouts to end the season didn’t help either. Ohio State  2010 Record: 12-1 (7-1) How do you overcome all those off-the-field issues that plagued the Buckeyes? You have the most talented team in the conference, that’s how. Last year the Nittany Lions suffered injuries from some of their All-Big 10 talent, but the defense should be back in form. Third year coach Danny Hope is hoping to catch a break this year and get to over five wins. Starting the season 3-0 against Middle Tennessee, Rice and SE Missouri St. will be a must. If Wisconsin wants to be known as a top tier program, the time is now. The new and improved Big 10 could prevent the Badgers from winning their division.

Are the Pirates on an up or down trend? Starting out strong, and then losing five of the six final games, who knows? If the defense can step up, East Carolina can extend consecutive bowl seasons to six. Doc Holliday is solid, but does he have the right medicine. Take the Herd to a bowl game and Marshall fans will fill their prescription. Tough road games ahead. A steep uphill climb, that’s what Memphis faces. No sugar coating these ribs, coming off a school record of 1-11 record is tough sell. Could this be the year for the Golden Eagles? If not, when? The defense will be better; the offense will be one of the top 20 in the country. Last shot for Coach Neil Callaway. Fifth year running this program, this is his best chance to get the job done. Going into the 2010 season, Houston was predicted as a possible BCS buster. But the Cougars ended up 5-7 and never made it to the postseason. Can fourth year head coach David Baliff bring back the Owls to a 10-win season? Doubtful. Coming off a four win season, Rice will have to face non-conference games against Texas, Purdue, Baylor and Northwestern. In the last three years, SMU has built something special with the help of June Jones. But to be successful this year, the Mustangs need to go back to their ’09 form. How does a coach who has only 13 wins out of 48 games still have a job? It’s New Orleans, what did you expect? Seven wins, a bowl game and the Green Wave fans are dancing in the streets of the French Quarter.

Rough first year for Coach Rob Ianello. However with 14 starters and 53 lettermen returning, the second year should be better. Last year was a rebuild and reload season and it showed winning only two games. Third year Coach Dave Clawson needs to get more production. Can Buffalo pull off a Miami University and go from worst to first? Jeff Quinn took over for Turner Gill to help the offense shine, but ended up dead last in the nation. Darrell Hazel comes in to lead a program that hasn’t had a winning season since 2001. Hazel, a former Ohio State receivers coach, is focusing on the passing game with nine starters returning. Pulling off one of the most stunning turnarounds in college history, Miami brings in a new coach as Mike Haywood left last winter. Frank Solich has put together a solid program having four six-plus win seasons in the last five years, not to mention three bowl appearances and two MAC Championships. Al Golden, after turning around a dismal program, departs to coach the Canes. Steve Addazio, who comes from Florida, should benefit from the pieces that are already in place. A new coaching staff, new energy and many veteran players returning should result in a good year for the Cardinals.

Over the last five years, the Broncos have had a tremendous run, 61-5 with the last three of the losses by only seven total points. The season begins in Atlanta against Georgia. Coach Steve Fairchild has been trying different things to bring back a program that has faltered, but more tweaking is necessary. Life isn’t going to get any easier with Boise State coming into the conference. Mike Locksley enters his third year with a 2-22 record. Surprised they were dead last in total offense, scoring defense, and run defense?

San Diego State  2010 Record: 9-4 (5-3)

The Aztecs are coming off a very solid season where the offense averaged close to 460 yards per game. So what could go wrong, your star coach takes another job.

Two years in row in the hunt for the national title, the Horned Frogs have established themselves as a premiere program. Impressive from a school with less than 10,000 students. Does UNLV have a coaching problem? Mike Sanford and John Robinson couldn’t turn it around and Bobby Hauck struggled in his first year. The size of the school and limited recruiting options have prevented Wyoming from improving. So in order to have success, they will have to get every break possible including a couple of upsets. If that happens, a bowl game could be possible.

Entering in his 10th season, Jeff Tedford comes off his first losing season. If things don’t turn around this year, changes would be inevitable. The only thing left for the Ducks to accomplish is a win in January. Back to back conference championships and a trip to the title game are very impressive, but Chip Kelly is 0-2 in the postseason. Can Mike Riley turn this decline around quickly? Last year the Beavers suffered their third losing year since 1998 and the first time they missed the postseason since 2005. Lucky for Stanford, All-American QB Andrew Luck decided to stay, but Jim Harbaugh moved onto the NFL. David Shaw comes in to run the program and Harbaugh left plenty of tools. Two years of solid rebuilding should jell for Steve Sarkisian this year, but losing Jake Locker, one of their best players in years, to the NFL will offer a challenge.

Washington State  2010 Record: 2-10 (1-8)

Seven years at the helm, Mike Stoops is still under .500, but has improved this program. Now it’s time to get over the hump. This could be the best season in the last four years. It may have to be if Dennis Erickson wants to stay around. The Sun Devils have missed the postseason the last three seasons, going just 11-21. QB Brock Osweiler looks to be a gunslinger. Dan Hawkins was shown the door after a dismal record of 19-39. In comes former player Jon Embree. Rick Neuheisel has been a disappointment. Three out of four losing seasons isn’t what the Bruins fans were expecting.

Mark Richt is coming off two bad years, last year being a losing record. No one wants him to succeed more than the Bulldog Nation, but if he can’t right this ship going into his 11th year, Georgia will be looking for a new coach. This program has found ways to get the most out of what it has to get to five straight bowl games, but can the Wildcats be competitive in the East? Is this the year of the Gamecocks? The offense is loaded and has RB Marcus Lattimore. The defense is rock solid. And Steve Spurrier is due for more big games. Year zero is behind the Vols under Coach Dooley. Now on to year one with yet another very young team. A Music City Bowl appearance again will be mostly likely for the Big Orange and seen as a step in the right direction. James Franklin comes in as a man who is mad as hell and doesn’t want to take it anymore, but is that enough to turn around a program that has had one winning season (2008) since 1982? Out of all the top tier teams in the country, no one has more talent than Alabama. Will the tragedy in the spring motivate this team more? The Hogs took second spot in the SEC to a National Champion. Petrino has rebuilt this program to the level of SEC title, maybe, but a division title is within reach. Most people thought Auburn would have a good year. Wow were they wrong. But add one of the single greatest performances by a quarterback and anything can happen when things fall in place. Coming off an 11-2 season with the only losses to the National Champions and a Sugar Bowl bound Arkansas, the Tigers look solid going into the 2011 season. It’s tough playing in the SEC West. If the Rebels can finish above Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, LSU or Miss State, that’s a successful season, imagine that.

Mississippi State  2010 Record: 9-4 (4-4)

Dan Mullen has been successful in his first two years going 14-11 and putting together something strong, a tough thing to do in the SEC West.

The offense should be able to bomb its way to wins even if the defense hasn’t improved. The last sevenwin campaign came in 1987, and it’s time to finally get back over the hump.

Mario Cristobal has to show that he can make the Golden Panthers into another Troy, a consistent Sun Belt powerhouse. Look for another Sun Belt title. After years of being a six-win program, and after last year’s disaster, the hope has to be to start beating the Western Kentuckys of the world on a regular basis to get the first season with more than six victories since 1993.

Middle Tennessee  2010 Record: 6-7 (5-3)

They’re not good enough to win the Sun Belt title, but pulling off a fourth bowl win in six years would be impressive. It’ll take an upset win or three to pull that off.

ULM

2010 Record: 5-7 (4-4)

The Todd Dodge era is over, the high school coach couldn’t do it at the next level. In comes former Iowa State head coach and big-time defensive assistant Dan McCarney to run the show. Winning ten games would be a major accomplishment, and the schedule is light enough to be able to do it, but all that really matters is coming up with titles, and the Trojans should be good enough to do it. Will Todd Berry be the coach to bring a winning season to ULM? Since making the move up to the D-I/ FBS level in 1994, ULM has yet to come up with a winning season, but it’s not like the program has been bad.

Western Kentucky  2010 Record: 2-10 (2-6)

While there’s just enough experience returning and just enough talent to have a shot at a winning season if everything breaks the right way, improving by three games would be good enough.

WAC Preview Fresno State

2010 Record: 8-5 (5-3)

This needs to be it for head coach Pat Hill and a Fresno State program that appeared a decade ago to be ready to turn into a Boise State. Now with Boise State out of the picture, that could be enough.

Hawaii

2010 Record: 10-4 (7-1)

Idaho

2010 Record: 6-7 (3-5)

Louisiana Tech

2010 Record: 5-7 (4-4)

There’s no excuse to not have a nice base with at UNLV, UC Davis, at San Jose State, New Mexico State, at Idaho, Utah State, and Tulane all winnable.

While the team is inexperienced, the schedule is just light enough to hope for six wins, possibly seven. Beating North Dakota and Utah State is a must.

On talent, Tech has the potential to be one of the three best teams in the WAC this year. The schedule will ruin any talent advantage with road games at Southern Miss, Mississippi State, and Ole Miss tough to deal with, along with the non-conference home date with Houston.

Nevada

2010 Record: 13-1 (7-1)

The Wolf Pack lost 27-21 at Hawaii last season, and that turned out to be the only blemish on the record or what might have been the best year in Chris Ault’s career. Can the Wolfpack do it again?

New Mexico State  2010 Record: 2-10 (1-7)

It’s been six years since NMSU came up with a 5-6 season in 2004, and 2002 was the last time the program came up with a winning season. For a team with just four winning campaigns in the last 43 seasons, any sign of life would be positive.

NFL Preview BUFFALO   BILLS

MIAMI DOLPHINS

Buffalo Bills 2010 Record: 4-12 Coach: Chan Gailey Key Player: QB Ryan Fitzpatrick Key Gains: WR Brad Smith, DT Marcell Dareus Key Losses: LB Paul Posluszny, WR Lee Evans

2010 Record: 7-9 Coach: Tony Sparano Key Player: LB Cameron Wake Key Gains: LB Kevin Burnett, RB Reggie Bush Key Losses: RB Ronnie Brown, RB Ricky Williams

Outlook: The Bills had some heartbreaking losses in Chan Gailey’s first year as head coach (including five losses by three points, and three in overtime), but an incredibly porous defense that ranked dead last in rushing yards allowed doomed them in many a contest. Offensively, QB Ryan Fitzpatrick and WR Stevie Johnson worked up a nice little chemistry, but the team will need more from his fellow receivers and more on the ground from RB C.J. Spiller and company. Wins will still be hard to find in the AFC East.

Outlook: Miami gains a nice weapon in the versatile Reggie Bush, who should step right in and make up for the loss of aging RB Ronnie Brown. On defense, Cameron Wake is becoming a monster at OLB and notched 14 sacks last season, third best in the league. But it usually wasn’t the defense that was the problem last season, as the Dolphins were fairly solid all around. The offense is another story, and there are major questions at the quarterback position; Chad Henne threw 19 INTs to just 15 TDs last year.

NEW ENGLAND   PATRIOTS

NEW YORK   JETS

2010 Record: 14-2 Coach: Bill Belichick Key Player: QB Tom Brady Key Gains: WR Chad Ochochinco, DT Albert Haynesworth, DT Shaun Ellis Key Losses: LB Tully Banta-Cain

2010 Record: 11-5 Coach: Rex Ryan Key Player: QB Mark Sanchez Key Gains: WR Plaxico Burress Key Losses: WR Braylon Edwards, DT Shaun Ellis

Outlook: The Patriots just don’t stop winning. QB Tom Brady continues to have outstanding statistical seasons with his deep receiving corps of Wes Welker, Julian Edelman and now Chad Ochocinco; Brady led the league in QB rating last season, and though he doesn’t have Randy Moss as a deep threat, the Pats offense will keep humming. On defense, the Patriots took a chance on troubled DT Albert Haynesworth. If he can turn his career around and produce, it will be a nice boost for a unit that struggled uncharacteristically against the run

Outlook: QB Mark Sanchez continues to become more comfortable as a leader, even though his overall numbers don’t wow you. He could cut down on INTs in Year 3. WR Braylon Edwards was allowed to sign with San Francisco, but the organization is hoping that Plaxico Burress, fresh out of jail and 35 years old, can provide some production. RBs Shonn Greene and LaDainian Tomlinson should again make up one of the top tandems in the league. The defense is still among the best in the league with CB Darrelle Revis.

NFL Preview BALTIMORE   RAVENS

CINCINNATI   BENGALS

2010 Record: 12-4 Coach: John Harbaugh Key Player: RB Ray Rice Key Gains: S Bernard Pollard, WR Lee Evans, RB Ricky Williams Key Losses: TE Todd Heap, S Dawan Landry, WR Derrick Mason

2010 Record: 4-12 Coach: Marvin Lewis Key Player: RB Cedric Benson Key Gains: CB Nate Clements, QB Bruce Gradkowski, WR A.J. Green, QB Andy Dalton Key Losses: QB Carson Palmer, CB Johnathan Joseph

Outlook: The Ravens parted ways with a number of proven free agents, looking to free up as much cap space as possible. But the corps of the team remains intact and QB Joe Flacco continues to improve under center. RB Ray Rice had another productive season last year and is the cornerstone of the Ravens attack with his versatility. While the overall defensive numbers were again stellar (third in the league in scoring defense) the Ravens didn’t have the type of takeaway numbers we’ve grown accustomed to and managed only 27 sacks last year.

Outlook: It will be a transition year for the Bengals, assuming QB Carson Palmer actually retires and rookie Andy Dalton steps in as starter. Also coming on board via the draft is dynamic WR A.J. Green out of Georgia, who will make fans forget about Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens (who had not officially left through free agency at press time, but was expected to sign elsewhere). Defensively, Cincinnati is still waiting for LB Rey Maualuga to blossom into a superstar, and the loss of CB Johnathan Joseph through free agency doesn’t help.

CLEVELAND   BROWNS

PITTSBURGH STEELERS

2010 Record: 5-11 Coach: Pat Shurmur Key Player: RB Peyton Hillis Key Gains: RB Brandon Jackson, CB Dmitri Patterson Key Losses: WR Chansi Stuckey

2010 Record: 12-4 Coach: Mike Tomlin Key Player: QB Ben Roethlisberger Key Gains: DT Cameron Heyward Key Losses: OL Max Starks, WR Antwaan Randle-El

Outlook: There were a few bright spots in 2010 for Cleveland. Namely, the emergence of Peyton Hillis as a feature back and the poise shown by QB Colt McCoy when he was forced into duty in the ninth game of the season. McCoy wasn’t perfect, but finished the year with just over a 60 percent completion rate and did some good things with his legs outside the pocket. However, the offense finished second to last in the league by producing a sickly 16.9 points per game. The defense should be above average again.

Outlook: Ben Roethlisberger didn’t miss a beat after a six-game suspension. Now he’s married and looking to prove that the Steelers are a Super Bowl contender again in 2011. RB Rashard Mendenhall has developed into a good starting running back, and the young receiving corps is coming along nicely with Hines Ward getting up in age. The defense is still a beast with the ferocious S Troy Polamalu and LB James Harrison terrorizing the opposition. Look for the Steelers to again run neck-and-neck with Baltimore for the division.

NFL Preview HOUSTON   TEXANS

INDIANAPOLIS   COLTS

2010 Record: 6-10 Coach: Gary Kubiak Key Player: RB Arian Foster Key Gains: CB Johnathan Joseph, S Danieal Manning Key Losses: DT Amobi Okoye

2010 Record: 10-6 Coach: Jim Caldwell Key Player: QB Peyton Manning Key Gains: LB Ernie Sims, DT Key Losses: OT Charlie Johnson, S Bob Sanders

Outlook: It’s been frustrating waiting for a breakthrough from the Texans, who still lack a playoff appearance. If you’re going to challenge Peyton Manning and Co., however, you need to have a pass defense. The Texans were worst in the league in that category last season, but CB Johnathan Joseph was one of the top free agents available and should help immensely. The offense will be extremely productive with QB Matt Schaub, WR Andre Johnson and RB Arian Foster. Can the defense step up and put them over the top?

Outlook: Peyton Manning just signed a longterm deal that will ensure he retires a Colt, but he’s still looking for the elusive second Super Bowl championship after losing to the Jets on a last-second field goal in last year’s Wild Card rouond. Manning has stayed amazing consistent over his career, however, his surrounding cast seems to have taken a step back recently. The OL needs a lot of work, and the defense has declined due to injuries and age. The Colts aren’t dominant anymore, but have still won seven of the last eight division titles.

NFL Preview DENVER   BRONCOS

KANSAS CITY   CHIEFS

2010 Record: 4-12 Coach: John Fox Key Player: WR Brandon Lloyd Key Gains: LB Von Miller Key Losses: DT Jamal Williams

2010 Record: 10-6 Coach: Todd Haley Key Player: RB Jamaal Charles Key Gains: WR Steve Breaston Key Losses: DT Shaun Smith

Outlook: The Broncos are banking on LB Von Miller to bring some sizzle to a defense that was hopeless in 2010; the team gave up nearly 30 points a game last season, dead last in the NFL. The quarterback situation will bring about some debate as Kyle Orton, who spent part of last season injured, and third-year Tim Tebow compete for time. Orton entered the season as starter over the still developing Tebow. The wide receiving corps is among the deepest in the league with Brandon Lloyd unexpectedly breaking out as a star.

Outlook: KC will look to follow up their AFC West-winning season with another run at the division, but the sting of a 30-7 beatdown at the hands of the Ravens in the Wild Card round is indicative of how far the young Chiefs have to go. The Chiefs were the most prolific rushing offense in the league last season, going for 2,627 yards behind RBs Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones. Charles should only continue to get better, while QB Matt Cassel has been steady enough. The defense was a bend-but-don’t-break unit and had a respectable year.

OAKLAND   RAIDERS

SAN DIEGO   CHARGERS

2010 Record: 8-8 Coach: Hue Jackson Key Player: RB Darren McFadden Key Gains: TE Kevin Boss Key Losses: CB Nnamdi Asomugha, TE Zach Miller, OG Robert Gallery

2010 Record: 9-7 Coach: Norv Turner Key Player: QB Philip Rivers Key Gains: LB Takeo Spikes Key Losses: LB Kevin Burnett, RB Darren Sproles

Outlook: After an 8-8 season and marked improvement, owner Al Davis against befuddled the football-watching world when he fired head coach Tom Cable. Enter Hue Jackson, who spent the past year as offensive coordinator. QB Jason Campbell showed some promise last season, and will be the main man under center in 2011. As expected, star CB Nnamdi Asomugha bolted during free agency, but RB Darren McFadden will look to continue his strong play (and good health) after breaking out last season.

Outlook: The Chargers’ notorious tendency to start slow finally caught up with them last season, as a 2-5 record out of the gate doomed them to a postseason-less 2010. San Diego will be looking to reclaim their mantle as the team to beat in the AFC West. QB Philip Rivers turned in another monster statistical year. Getting WR Vincent Jackson back full-time will help, but losing the versatile Darren Sproles means the offense and special teams could take a hit. The Chargers meet only one playoff team in the first five weeks before the schedule heats up.

NFL Preview DALLAS   COWBOYS

NEW YORK   GIANTS

2010 Record: 6-10 Coach: Jason Garrett Key Player: QB Tony Romo Key Gains: S Abram Elam Key Losses: RB Marion Barber, WR Roy Williams

2010 Record: 10-6 Coach: Tom Coughlin Key Player: QB Eli Manning Key Gains: CB Prince Amukamara Key Losses: TE Kevin Boss, DT Barry Cofield

Outlook: The embarrassment level was high after the ‘Boys crashed and burned in what many thought could be a title-winning season. Tony Romo went down with a broken clavicle, and head coach Wade Phillips was mercifully fired in early November. Jason Garrett, who had long been assumed to be Phillips’ successor, was named interim coach for the rest of the year and was officially hired as long-term coach after the New Year. The offense has a chance to be great again with Romo’s return and RB Felix Jones, WRs Miles Austin and Dez Bryant, and TE Jason Witten.

Outlook: The offseason began with a contentious contract dispute with DE Osi Umenyiora, and the defense, which has been solid for so long for Tom Coughlin, looks to be on the decline. The passing attack has been exciting recently with great young receivers in Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham, although TE Kevin Boss was lost to free agency. QB Eli Manning threw for over 4,000 yards last year, but tossed a league-worst, and career-worst 25 interceptions. RB Ahmad Bradshaw is a steady producer.

PHILADELPHIA   EAGLES

WASHINGTON   REDSKINS

2010 Record: 10-6 Coach: Andy Reid Key Player: QB Michael Vick Key Gains: CB Nnamdi Asomugha, QB Vince Young, RB Ronnie Brown, DE Jason Babin, DE Cullen Jenkins, CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, WR Steve Smith Key Losses: PK David Akers, LB Ernie Sims, S Quintin Mikell, QB Kevin Kolb Outlook: The Eagles took an unbelievably aggressive approach to the short offseason, making the biggest splash we’ve seen in a while. CBs Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie join a group that already included star Asante Samuel, making it the strongest unit in the league, and the defensive line was upgraded big-time. QB Michael Vick completed his comeback with a killer 2010, and leads perhaps the league’s most flashy and exciting offense. The Eagles have all the pieces in place to win a Super Bowl.

2010 Record: 6-10 Coach: Mike Shanahan Key Player: WR Santana Moss Key Gains: DT Barry Cofield, RB Tim Hightower Key Losses: DT Albert Haynesworth, QB Donovan McNabb Outlook: The Donovan McNabb experiment ended after just one season, and it looks like it will be a quarterback battle between John Beck and Rex Grossman. Beck has little in the way of NFL experience and Grossman is an interception-prone veteran. WR Santana Moss is the bright spot for the offense, and the running back position will belong to Ryan Torain and Tim Hightower after he came over from Arizona. Defensively, the ‘Skins gave up the second most yards per game last season but hope a near overhaul will pay dividends.

NFL Preview CHICAGO   BEARS

DETROIT   LIONS

2010 Record: 11-5 Coach: Lovie Smith Key Player: RB Matt Forte Key Gains: DT Amobi Okoye, RB Marion Barber Key Losses: C Olin Kreutz, S Danieal Manning, TE Greg Olsen

2010 Record: 6-10 Coach: Jim Schwartz Key Player: WR Calvin Johnson Key Gains: LB Stephen Tulloch, DT Nick Fairley Key Losses: DE Turk McBride

Outlook: The monumental flame-out in the NFC Championship Game was hard to swallow, as Jay Cutler was criticized heavily after a poor performance and (questionable) game-ending injury. But Cutler made progress in key areas, throwing 10 fewer interceptions from ’09 to ’10. He’ll have to continue on that path if the Bears want to make another deep playoff run. The defense was outstanding again, giving up just 17.9 points per game. The Bears will be second fiddle to the Packers in the North, but a playoff berth should be expected.

Outlook: A lot depends on the health of QB Matthew Stafford, who has suffered through many different injuries his first two years in the league. He’s only played in 13 out of a possible 32 games while being the incumbent starter since he was drafted. WR Calvin Johnson is elite, and on defense the Lions have continued to collect young talent. NT Ndamukong Suh was the defensive rookie of the year, and Detroit got even better on the line by drafting Nick Fairley. The team might be a year away from real contention, but a .500 record wouldn’t be a shock.

GREEN BAY   PACKERS

MINNESOTA   VIKINGS

2010 Record: 10-6 Coach: Mike McCarthy Key Player: QB Aaron Rodgers Key Gains: OL Derek Sherrod Key Losses: RB Brandon Jackson, DE Cullen Jenkins

2010 Record: 6-10 Coach: Leslie Frazier Key Player: RB Adrian Peterson Key Gains: WR Michael Jenkins, QB Christian Ponder Key Losses: QB Brett Favre, DE Ray Edwards, S Husain Abdullah, QB Tarvaris Jackson, WR Sidney Rice

Outlook: Green Bay slipped into the playoffs with a last-minute win against the Bears, then the rest is history. Aaron Rodgers surgically tore through defenses on his way to a Super Bowl win over Pittsburgh, and the Packers will be among the favorites yet again. Green Bay was one of the least active teams in free agency, instead being content to regain a slew of starters from the injured list. The offense is unstoppable at times, and the defense could be nearly as good; the Pack had the second-best unit in the league last year with just 15 points allowed per game.

Outlook: The Brett Favre era ended in a mess, and now the Vikings will have to sort out a QB battle among the likes of veteran Donovan McNabb, second-year Joe Webb and rookie Christian Ponder. RB Adrian Peterson is capable of carrying an offense, as evidenced by his over 1,600 yards from scrimmage and 13 total TDs last season, and Percy Harvin is dynamic when healthy. The defense, which was disappointing last year, loses several reliable starters but still features playmakers in DE Jared Allen and CB Antoine Winfield.

NFL Preview ATLANTA   FALCONS

CAROLINA   PANTHERS

2010 Record: 13-3 Coach: Mike Smith Key Player: QB Matt Ryan Key Gains: DE Ray Edwards, WR Julio Jones Key Losses: OG Harvey Dahl, WR Michael Jenkins

2010 Record: 2-14 Coach: Ron Rivera Key Player: QB Cam Newton Key Gains: K Olindo Mare, QB Cam Newton, TE Greg Olsen Key Losses: CB Richard Marshall

Outlook: The memory of the 48-21 home shellacking the Falcons took at the hands of the Packers in the Divisional Round still lingers. The Falcons’ most important offseason move was signing DE Ray Edwards away from the Vikings to put opposite John Abraham to improve the pass rush. Through the draft, the team traded up 21 spots to take Alabama WR Julio Jones; head coach Mike Smith and staff are hoping that the young wideout can develop quickly and take an already solid Atlanta offense to the next level.

Outlook: The Panthers were atrocious on offense last season, generating an almost unbelievable 12.3 points per game as QB Jimmy Clausen and a host of others struggled behind a thin offensive line. Enter Cam Newton, who has been anointed as savior by success-starved Carolina fans. New head coach Ron Rivera will give Clausen every shot to keep the starting job, but the No. 1 overall pick out of Auburn could push for snaps in specialty packages right away. The Panthers will be in the cellar of the NFC again this year.

NEW ORLEANS    SAINTS

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

2010 Record: 11-5 Coach: Sean Payton Key Player: QB Drew Brees Key Gains: C Olin Kreutz, RB Darren Sproles, RB Mark Ingram Key Losses: RB Reggie Bush

2010 Record: 10-6 Coach: Raheem Morris Key Player: QB Josh Freeman Key Gains: DL Adrian Clayborn Key Losses: LB Barrett Ruud

Outlook: The Saints crashed and burned in the first round of the playoffs at a 7-9 Seahawks team, ending a slightly disappointing season. They weren’t an offensive juggernaut like in ‘09, but Drew Brees is still an elite QB. The offense gains RB Darren Sproles as a Reggie Bush replacement, and the first-round selection of former Heisman winning running back Mark Ingram has generated excitement. WR Marques Colston needs to stay healthy. Defensively, the Saints need to get back to collecting turnovers at a high rate.

Outlook: The Bucs tied Green Bay, the NFC’s final playoff team, at 10-6 last season, but were kept out of the postseason due to tiebreakers. Nevertheless, it was a remarkable seven-game turnaround. A youth movement has emerged, beginning with solid young QB Josh Freeman, who made a dramatic improvement from his rookie season and threw 25 TDs to just six INTs. Two secondyear players, WR Mike Williams and RB LeGarrette Blount, lead the offense. It won’t be a vintage Tampa defense, but the team has done a good job of building through the draft in recent years.

NFL Preview ARIZONA   CARDINALS 2010 Record: 5-11 Coach: Ken Whisenhunt Key Player: WR Larry Fitzgerald Key Gains: CB Richard Marshall, S Husain Abdullah, TE Todd Heap, QB Kevin Kolb, CB Patrick Peterson, RB Ryan Williams Key Losses: WR Steve Breaston, RB Tim Hightower Outlook: The Cardinals suffered last year after Kurt Warner’s retirement, trudging through 16 games of a QB combination of Derek Anderson, John Skelton and Max Hall. The Kevin Kolb trade with the Eagles was a foregone conclusion long before the new CBA was ratified, and he should provide stability immediately. RB Beanie Wells and rookie Ryan Williams will share carries, and Williams was impressive early in training camp. The defense was upgraded with several key free-agent signings and No. 6 overall pick CB Patrick Peterson.

SAN FRANCISCO    49ers

2010 Record: 6-10 Coach: Jim Harbaugh Key Player: RB Frank Gore Key Gains: PK David Akers, WR Braylon Edwards, QB Colin Kaepernick Key Losses: CB Nate Clements, LB Takeo Spikes Outlook: QB Alex Smith is entering his seventh season in San Fran after getting taken with the No. 1 pick overall. New head coach John Harbaugh, who led Stanford to a BCS bowl last year, is considered a QB guru and will try to turn Smith into a consistent signal caller. RB Frank Gore is slowing down but is still a fine feature back, and TE Vernon Davis is one of the league’s best. LB Patrick Willis is a bona fide star, but many of the starting spots on the defense (which was just mediocre last year) are up for grabs.

ST. LOUIS   RAMS

2010 Record: 7-9 Coach: Steve Spagnuolo Key Player: QB Sam Bradford Key Gains: OG Harvey Dahl, S Quintin Mikell, WR Mike Sims-Walker Key Losses: TE Daniel Fells Outlook: QB Sam Bradford exceeded expectations in his first year out of Oklahoma, doing a great job with a similarly unproven supporting cast. The acquisition of Harvey Dahl strengthens the line, and Mike SimsWalker joins a young and improving receiving corps. The defense was a nice surprise last season with a brutal pass rush that will only get better with top draft pick DE Robert Quinn. The Rams will be a popular pick to take the West after coming a hair short last year, losing 16-6 at division champ Seattle on the last day of the season.

SEATTLE   SEAHAWKS 2010 Record: 7-9 Coach: Pete Carroll Key Player: WR Sidney Rice Key Gains: QB Tarvaris Jackson, TE Zach Miller, WR Sidney Rice Key Losses: QB Matt Hasselbeck Outlook: It will be a new-look Seattle team in 2011, as longtime QB Matt Hasselbeck moves on to Tennessee and former Viking Tarvaris Jackson will be the starter. WR Sidney Rice, Jackson’s Minnesota teammate, will look to rebound after only playing in six games due to injury last year. With a healthy rice, an emerging Mike Williams, and newly acquired TE Zach Miller, Seattle could make big improvements in the passing game. The defense was leaky, however, and hopes that its young players continue to improve.

FANTASY Quarterbacks

1. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers: Rodgers has assumed the mantle of top fantasy quarterback in the league. He gets back TE Jermichael Finley from injury, which will only help the passing attack. The reigning Super Bowl champ threw for 28 TDs last season but could see that number go up. 2. Michael Vick, Philadelphia Eagles: Rating Vick No. 2 overall assumes he will stay healthy for a full season. Last year he wore down under the contact he took while on the run, but he was responsible for a few transcendent fantasy performances. Vick has learned patience in the pocket and his receivers are dynamite. 3. Tom Brady, New England Patriots: The Patriots aren’t going away and neither is the 34-year-old Brady, who led the league with 36 TD passes last year with a career-low four interceptions. He never misses games and rarely has an off week. Brady won’t have Randy Moss, but Chad Ochocinco comes on as a wild card. 4. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints: Brees’ production and fantasy value dropped from his amazing ’09 performance, but he’s still elite. His overall success hinges largely on the health of top wide receiver target Marques Colston, who may not be 100 percent back from a knee injury. 5. Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers: It was a strange year for the Chargers offense in 2010, but Rivers produced even though TE Antonio Gates suffered through injuries and WR Vincent Jackson held out for much of the year. Those two are back, however, and Rivers should again put up top-notch numbers. 6. Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts: You could easily switch Manning with Rivers, but at No. 6 on our list, Manning is the last top-tier quarterback in the fantasy pool. TE Dallas Clark will be back, and WR Reggie Wayne continues to produce. However, last season the O-line was spotty and this year it may not be any better. 7. Matt Schaub, Houston Texans: Schaub had an up and down 2010 campaign, but could get back on track with WR Andre Johnson and TE Owen Daniels healthy. With those two as his foundation and RB Arian Foster’s continued emergence as a pass-catching threat, Schaub merits a top10 QB selection. 8. Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons: Ryan has turned into a reliable fantasy performer thanks in large part to Roddy White’s emergence. Now, Ryan has another weapon in No. 6 overall pick WR Julio Jones. Ryan tossed 28 TDs and had over 3,700 passing yards last year, and could be more productive this season. 9. Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys: The Cowboys’ disastrous 2010 hit rock bottom when Romo went down with a broken clavicle. If he can stay healthy, he’ll again have stars in WR Miles Austin and TE Jason Witten to work with. He’s a great mid-round value pick with the potential to produce big-time. 10. Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers: Roethlisberger didn’t miss a beat after a six-game suspension last season, and has a crop of young receivers to throw to in Emmanuel Sanders and Antonio Brown. He will take a few sacks, but he’s shown himself to be one of the most consistent producers in the league.

Running Backs 1. Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Vikings: Uncertainty in the passing game will necessitate more emphasis on the ground attack, and Peterson’s stats could benefit. There will be much debate on whether he should be the top running back, but Peterson could see a season like 2009 when he scored 18 TDs. 2. Chris Johnson, Tennessee Titans: CJ2k suffered through a thigh injury for part of last year, but still managed over 1,600 yards from scrimmage. Johnson didn’t quite live up to the hype generated by his breakout ’09, but he’s still the fastest back in the league, and will see a ton of work this season. 3. Arian Foster, Houston Texans: Foster came out of nowhere last season to lead the league in rushing but enters this year as a known commodity. Asking for a repeat of his 2,220 yards from scrimmage and 18 total TDs is a little much, but he’s still a top-three fantasy back. 4. Jamaal Charles, Kansas City Chiefs: Charles followed up a breakout 2009 with an even better 2010. He is electric at 6.4 yards per carry, and can break a big run at any time. Thomas Jones should see less goal-line work, and Charles should be able to score more than five rushing TD this season. 5. Ray Rice, Baltimore Ravens: Rice started slowly in 2010 but ended up with 1,776 yards from scrimmage. He only managed six touchdowns, but could see more goal-line action this season with Willis McGahee’s departure. Rice will continue to be a security blanket for QB Joe Flacco. 6. Michael Turner, Atlanta Falcons: Turner bounced back from an injury-plagued 2009 to finish third in the league in rushing last year and score 12 TDs. He won’t give you any receptions or receiving yards, however, so draft wisely in a PPR format. 7. LeSean McCoy, Philadelphia Eagles: With all the weapons at the Eagles’ disposal, McCoy will still be the rock of the offense. McCoy rushed for 1,080 yards last year and added 592 yards on 78 receptions, the most catches among running backs. Expect consistent production from McCoy. 8. Rashard Mendenhall, Pittsburgh Steelers: Mendenhall had a nice season last year with 1,273 yards on the ground. He’s not much of a receiving threat, but he scored 13 total TDs last year, which was tied for second in the league. 9. Darren McFadden, Oakland Raiders: It took a few years, but fantasy owners benefited from McFadden’s first 1,000yard season. He scored 10 times last season in 13 games. If McFadden can stay healthy for a full season, he has the potential for a huge year in the defensively challenged AFC West. 10. Maurice Jones-Drew, Jacksonville Jaguars: Provided MJD can fully recover from offseason meniscus surgery, he should again be a top fantasy back. Jones-Drew enjoyed a 1,324-yard season on the ground last year in just 14 games. His TDs need to improve from a career-low seven, however.

FANTASY 11. Matt Forte, Chicago Bears: Forte bounced back from a tough 2009, gaining over 1,600 yards from scrimmage and scoring 10 times. He hasn’t missed a game in three seasons, and should see close to 300 carries again this season. Forte is no worse than a second-round draft choice. 12. Peyton Hillis, Cleveland Browns: Hillis got his first starting shot at running back last season and gained 1,654 yards from scrimmage and 13 TDs. This year, however, it looks as if he will see fewer reps with Brandon Jackson entering the mix. He could also stand to cut down on his fumbles (eight last year). 13. Frank Gore, San Francisco 49ers: Gore has seen his attempts and yardage totals decline almost every season since his outstanding 2006 campaign. Last year Gore only rushed for 853 yards due to an injury, but we’re banking on a healthy return and productiveness in a revamped Jim Harbaugh offense. 14. Ahmad Bradshaw, New York Giants: Last year Bradshaw gained 1,235 yards on the ground and a respectable eight touchdowns. His backfield mate Brandon Jacobs will steal some TDs, but Bradshaw is still a valuable midround choice. He’s back with the Giants after exploring free agency. 15. LeGarrette Blount, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Blount was one of the surprise performers of 2010 when he surpassed the 1,000-yard mark despite starting just seven games. He has rare big-play ability for such a hefty back (6-foot, 250 pounds) and will only continue to get better for the improving Buccaneers.

Wide Receivers

1. Andre Johnson, Houston Texans: He had some ankle issues in 2010 that limited him, but he still managed 1,216 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in 13 games. Here’s predicting he returns to his ’08 and ’09 form when he had 1,500 yards each year. Johnson turned 30 this year, but still has plenty in the tank. 2. Calvin Johnson, Detroit Lions: “Megatron” played an injury-free season in 2010 on his way to 1,120 receiving yards. Unfortunately, his starting quarterback, Matthew Stafford, wasn’t so lucky. The QB situation in Detroit will dictate how productive Johnson will be in his fifth season in the league. 3. Roddy White, Atlanta Falcons: Expect a small dip in receptions from last season when he led the league in catches with 115, but don’t expect White to fall too far even with the addition of Julio Jones to the Falcons receiving corps. White put up 1,389 receiving yards and 10 scores in his best season yet. 4. Larry Fitzgerald, Arizona Cardinals: If Kevin Kolb can learn the offense quickly, Fitzgerald could become dominant again. Last year the Cardinals trotted out a ramshackle group of QBs and Fitzgerald still put up over 1,100 yards receiving. He should see his TDs rise with Kolb at the helm; he only scored six last season.

5. Hakeem Nicks, New York Giants: Nicks has emerged as Eli Manning’s favorite target, but has to stay healthy after missing a handful of games in his first two years in the league. He’s a great route runner and has outstanding hands; expect another 1,000-yard year and 10-plus scores. 6. Greg Jennings, Green Bay Packers: Jennings has become Aaron Rodgers’ go-to guy, getting to the 1,200-yard mark twice in the last three years and leading the team in receptions during that time. Jennings also scored 12 TDs in 2010. Jennings is a sure thing in the second round on draft day. 7. DeSean Jackson, Philadelphia Eagles: His overall fantasy value is lower than his talent level due to sharing targets with Jeremy Maclin, but Jackson is one of the most explosive players in the NFL. He had some huge games last year, including a 210-yard performance against Dallas on just four receptions. 8. Mike Wallace, Pittsburgh Steelers: The Steelers’ bread and butter is still the run, but Wallace broke out in 2010 with seven 100-yard games and 10 TDs. He’s developed a great chemistry with Ben Roethlisberger, so the third-year player should be a fantasy producer for years to come. 9. Vincent Jackson, San Diego Chargers: He sat out nearly all of last year due to contract disputes, and only tallied 248 receiving yards in five games. But Jackson is capable of big production in the Chargers system; before last year, he was coming off of back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns. 10. Sidney Rice, Seattle Seahawks: Rice will have a familiar face throwing him the football this season in likely starter Tarvaris Jackson. Rice is looking for a bounce-back season after undergoing hip surgery last year and playing in just six contests for Minnesota. 11. Miles Austin, Dallas Cowboys: Though Austin didn’t equal his out-of-nowhere 2009 numbers, his 1,041 receiving yards and seven touchdowns were very respectable. Dez Bryant will get more targets in his second year, but Roy Williams’ departure will free up more opportunities for Austin. 12. Reggie Wayne, Indianapolis Colts: Wayne has been Mr. Consistency since joining the Colts in 2001, and enjoyed his seventh straight season of 1,000 or more receiving yards. He didn’t produce much in the touchdown department, just scoring six times, but you should expect around 100 receptions and production every week. 13. Dwayne Bowe, Kansas City Chiefs: Bowe tallied 15 TDs last season, scoring once every five times he caught the ball. It was more than twice his previous season scoring high, but another double-digit TD year isn’t out of the question. 14. Dez Bryant, Dallas Cowboys: Bryant has immense physical gifts and increased his role as the season wore on. He’s as exciting as anyone in the league in the open field and will also add value in the punt return department. He could eventually surpass Miles Austin as the No. 1 wide receiver.

FANTASY 15. Mike Williams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: With Josh Freeman emerging as one of the best young QBs in the league, this Syracuse product will become more valuable as a fantasy performer. He had a fantastic rookie season, amassing 964 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns.

Tight Ends

1. Antonio Gates, San Diego Chargers – Gates was on his way to an absurdly productive season when he went down with a foot injury. Before that, he had nearly 800 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns in 10 games. Usually very durable, Gates should be back healthy in 2011. 2. Dallas Clark, Indianapolis Colts: Though the Colts barely missed a beat with backup Jacob Tamme filling in for the last 10 games of the year, that just reinforces what we already know about Peyton Manning’s squad: the system works. Clark should give fantasy owners close to doubledigit touchdowns. 3. Jason Witten, Dallas Cowboys: Maybe the best pure receiver among tight ends, Witten continues to produce at a high clip. With another 1,000-yard campaign and nine touchdowns last season, Witten was last year’s top TE in fantasy points, and will only benefit from a healthy Romo. 4. Jermichael Finley, Green Bay Packers: Missing all of last year with a knee injury doesn’t inspire confidence in fantasy owners, but his recovery seems to have gone smoothly. The final piece of the passing game puzzle could take the Packers’ attack to new heights. 5. Vernon Davis, San Francisco 49ers: Davis couldn’t follow up his ultra-productive, 13-touchdown 2009 with a similar stat line, but he nearly broke the 1,000-yard mark again. With Jim Harbaugh in to overhaul the 49ers offense, Davis should continue to be productive. 6. Owen Daniels, Houston Texans: Daniels couldn’t shake several nagging injuries last year, but piled up 271 receiving yards and two touchdowns in the last four games of last season. Unfortunately, those two scores were his only ones on the season; that needs to change. 7. Jimmy Graham, New Orleans Saints: The former college basketball player showed flashes of brilliance last fall and is ready to become a top target. Jeremy Shockey’s gone and Graham, one of the most athletic tight ends in the league, will be the top TE this year for the Saints. 8. Brandon Pettigrew, Detroit Lions: Pettigrew responded well in 2010 coming off a major knee injury, posting 71 receptions. With an additional year of recovery time, he could be even more explosive.

Kickers

1. Nate Kaeding, San Diego Chargers: Kaeding missed three games with a groin injury in 2010, but should be back full strength. Expect more than the 23 field goals he produced last season.

2. Mason Crosby, Green Bay Packers: With the Packers offense rolling, you can expect nearly 50 fantasy points on extra points alone. Crosby is accurate and should be a top-three kicker. 3. Rob Bironas, Tennessee Titans: The 33-year-old had his most accurate season yet last year, hitting 24 of 26 field goal tries. Bironas is one of the best at converting attempts beyond 50 yards. 4. Stephen Gostkowski, New England Patriots: He tore a quadriceps muscle and missed over half of last season, but Gostkowski should be back 100 percent this fall. He’s a legitimate No. 1 kicker choice. 5. Neil Rackers, Houston Texans: Rackers hit 27 of 30 field goal attempts last year, and connected on three tries from beyond 50 yards last year.

Defenses

1. Pittsburgh Steelers – The Steelers will continue to rack up points with a ton of interceptions and sacks, and yielded the fewest points per game last year. We’ll give the Steel Curtain the nod as the top defense again for 2011. 2. Philadelphia Eagles – Philly added the best free agent on the market in CB Nnamdi Asomugha and another fine corner in Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Also, return man DeSean Jackson is a threat to take it to the house on any given punt. 3. Green Bay Packers – The Packers were very good defensively in 2010, and they’ll get a few players back from IR. Green Bay is fantastic in the back seven, which features a star in Charles Woodson and helped the Pack finish second in the league in INTs. 4. New York Jets – CB Darrelle Revis is the most talented Jets defender, and mastermind Rex Ryan will still bring the creative defensive packages and punishing blitzes. Expect the Jets to be up near the league lead in sacks. 5. Baltimore Ravens – S Ed Reed came back in a big way after leading the league with eight interceptions in 2010. The Baltimore D won’t produce as many sacks as in years past, but this is still an elite defensive unit.
