How do I get my child to take her medicine? This is a question we’re asked frequently. Taking medicine can be an unpleasant experience for a child, but it doesn’t need to be. At Save-Rite Pharmacy, we specialize in pediatric compounding to make medicine more acceptable to most children. Working with your pediatrician, we can change commercially-produced tablet prescriptions to a capsule or liquid that’s easier to swallow. We can add lots of cool flavors so the medicine tastes better, too! We’ve got allergies covered. Soy, gluten and other allergens can be removed from commercial prescriptions. And adult dosages can be resized for pint-sized patients.

A

s I sat writing this month’s letter, Jim walked into my office with a big grin on his face, carrying a large bag of homegrown green beans. Our neighbors have been blessed with prolific bean plants and are generously sharing the bounty. How wonderful! My relationship with garden beans goes way back. When I was little, my grandparents planted them every year in “the back 40”—an area across the street with an absentee owner who allowed everyone to use it for their vegetable gardens. Each spring, I’d help Gramps to plant bush snap beans in neat little rows that he separated with wooden boards. The leggy pole beans grew around tall metal poles he’d sunk into the earth. I’d excitedly watch the little sprouts come up, and I can remember pulling the bean seed shell off the first tender leaves. As the plants grew, we’d wait for the white and purple flowers, and then, suddenly, it was bean time and I was in charge of picking them. I’d get the old aluminum colander from Grams and head out to pick them for supper—and pick them and pick them until they were coming out of my ears. Then, into the kitchen I’d go to clean them at the old wooden table with the linoleum cover topped with newspapers to catch the ends we snapped off. I remember these stories fondly, and these experiences have greatly shaped me into the person I am today. As we put the final touches on this month’s issue of Natural Awakenings Chicago, I realize that my grandparents were experts at (grand)parenting with purpose. I was included in their everyday activities, and what could have become chores were offered with patience and love, and intended to be habit-forming life lessons. Rather than a disruption to my playtime (or what today could be considered video game or chat time), the tasks were presented as a non-optional, yet inclusive activity that wasn’t boring. For the little girl who couldn’t wait to do grownup things, cooking and gardening and the like were presented as fun adult activities. Hmmmm. This month, we include several great articles for lifting your parenting approach to a higher level with added fun for your kids (or grand kids, neighbor kids or nieces and nephews). In our main article, author and Natural Awakenings Publisher Meredith Montgomery offers insights and tips for enlightened parenting (be sure to follow the link to our website for tips on family happiness). Contributing writer Judith Fertig offers great ideas and recipes in this month’s Conscious Eating department for kids to get creative in the kitchen. Dr. Andie Pearson presents new findings that reveal fidgeting is actually a good thing when it comes to learning. And local life coach GuruNischan Khalsa gives us a humorous and very helpful look at five tips to end the daily constipation of life. We hope you enjoy a fun-filled and meaningful last month of summer! Turn off the TV and computer (they’ll be there all winter), gather the kids—and enjoy the festivals, take a walk in the park, go to the beach, run through the sprinkler, try a new veggie from the farmers’ market—and savor every delicious moment of August!

Oral Misalignment May Be a Symptom of Deeper Problems Research and reports are now pointing to a relationship between jaw malformation or crooked teeth, dysfunctional sleep and more serious health issues such as attentiondeficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which becomes more apparent with narrowing of the airway. Teeth erupt into the mouth following the misshapen patterns of the body, such as compression, rotation or shear patterns. Seen outwardly merely as crooked, oddly spaced teeth or a slanted smile, these patterns also create a small or narrowed airway, which can develop into much more serious problems. For some children, symptoms manifest as anxiety, poor sleep, snoring, grinding, sensory issues, poor math skills, etc. People may not exhibit these obvious signs as a child, but may still develop dangerous health challenges as an adult as a result. Gaiamed Dental offers drug-free and surgery-free treatments to deal with these conditions. Please call our office for a free consultation if your child is experiencing the following symptoms that may be related to their oral health: chronic allergies, aggressive behavior, mouth breathing, swollen adenoids/ tonsils, daytime drowsiness, crooked teeth, restless sleep, bedwetting, recurring nightmares, dark circles under eyes, snoring, irritability, frequent headaches, arrested growth and low math/spelling grades.

C

hicago Chiropractic Physician Eunice Deane, in using the concept of the Triangle of Health, considers the key to a healthy mind, body and spirit to be balance. To that end, she’s now offering laser therapy treatments for antiaging, pain relief and recovery. “Any component deleted can tip the triangle and set it off balance, and can lead to Dr. Eunice Deane dis-ease in the component involved,” says Deane. The goal of laser therapy is to deliver light energy units, in the form of photons, to damaged cells. Photons absorbed by the cells through laser therapy stimulate the mitochondria to accelerate production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), an important intracellular coenzyme. This biochemical increase in cell energy is used to help transform cells from a state of illness to a stable, healthy state. Deane graduated from the National College of Chiropractic in 1998 and has extensive postdoctoral training in applied kinesiology, acupuncture, rehabilitation, chiropractic internal medicine, chiropractic neurology and brain-based, brain-balancing therapy.

The spa operated at its Gilman, Illinois, location for 32 years until last January, when owner Harold Lebovic decided to move the facility and partnered with the team at Bella Vista Suites to bring their Heartland two-, three- and five-night, allinclusive, wellness packages to the shores of Geneva Lake. The Wisconsin resort now offers Heartland’s popular packages, which include fitness, spa services, stress release classes, weight management and overall wellness programs. A variety of fitness classes taught by dynamic instructors are designed to inspire and motivate participants to sustain their fitness regime or begin a new fitness journey. The spa also features the only Himalayan salt sauna, with chromo (color) therapy and aromatherapy, in the Midwest. Lebovic says, “We have found the perfect new home with Bella Vista Suites. The guests who have loved the Heartland for many years tell us they are amazed by the new location and the Bella Vista Suites facilities. Being on the beautiful shores of Geneva Lake makes our new resort an unforgettable experience for new guests and those returning.” Location: Bella Vista Suites, 335 Wrigley Dr., Lake Geneva, WI. newsbriefs Local Foods Brings Farm-to-Table to Retail Space

T

he new Local Foods, in Bucktown, is not a co-op, but an all-day, everyday farmers’ market, located at 1427 West Willow, as part of a wholesale food hub. The 27,000-square-foot facility intends to buy more than $3 million of Midwestern food this year, keeping food dollars in our regional economy and creating new jobs in our rural communities by

paying a fair price for their goods. With the introduction of this brick-and-mortar location, Chicago residents now have the opportunity to purchase the same locally sourced ingredients that Chicago chefs have utilized since the company’s inception in early 2013. Permanent fixtures within Local Foods include a bright, airy, 3,000-squarefoot marketplace with a host of local farm-direct products; the brand-new location of The Butcher & Larder, Chicago’s first sustainable, whole animal butcher shop; and Stock, a chef-driven, seasonal café with farmer/chef Abra Berens at the helm. Interactive events include seminars, cooking classes, farmer discussions, chef demos and more. The facility will also serve as the headquarters for the team’s expanding wholesale and distribution branch, delivering local products from small, Midwestern family farms to 200 of Chicago’s best chefs and restaurants.

New Food Co-Op Opens in Oak Park

S

ugar Beet Food Co-Op, located at 812 West Madison, in Oak Park, is now providing locally produced and organic food directly to the community. Sugar Beet is a full-service grocery store owned by community members and open to everyone. More than 1,100 owners have supported the co-op by buying a share, and applications are still being accepted. Many also volunteer on committees and work teams.

For more information, visit LocalFoods.com.

North Shore Bedding is now All-Natural

A

fter over 30 years in the mattress industry, locally owned and operated North Shore Bedding has committed to selling only chemical-free, all-natural and organic mattresses and bedding. Their mattresses are made from materials such as natural rubber, organic wool and organic cotton, combined for the ultimate in support, comfort and durability. Natural fibers such as wool breathe better than typical polyurethane-topped mattresses, staying cooler and dryer for better quality sleep. Standard synthetic foams emit toxic vapors that can disturb sleep and contain large amounts of flame retardants and other poorly regulated chemicals that pose significant health risks. Such endocrine-disrupting chemicals are known to increase risks for obesity, cancer and infertility, and are suspected contributors to developmental brain disorders such as autism and ADHD. Continuous exposure to off-gassing chemicals even alters sleepers’ hormone levels long after the chemical smell is gone. Location: 984 Willow Rd., Ste. H, Northbrook. For more information, call 847-291-6770 or visit NorthShoreBedding.com. See ad on page 21 and in the Community Resource Guide.

Whenever possible, the co-op will buy from small family farmers. It carries a wide range of local, organic and GMO-free foods and bulk items such as grains, soaps and cleaning products. The 6,300-square-foot store includes a coffee and juice bar and a demonstration table to inform on new recipes and skills that’ll inspire cooking from scratch using quality ingredients. The co-op’s unique fixtures were crafted from reclaimed barn wood donated by a co-op owner and fashioned by two other owners. Cheryl Muñoz, founder and project lead for Sugar Beet, states, “People want to know where their food comes from, they want to support small family farmers and they want to strengthen our local economy, too.” For more information, visit SugarBeetCoop.com.

Learn About The Havening Techniques at Introductory Talk in Chicago

T

he Havening Techniques are used by healthcare practitioners to eliminate trauma-related disturbances linked to phobias, chronic stress, pain, cravings and more. Donna Ryen, one of the first Havening Techniques trainers certified in the U.S., will be presenting a free introductory talk on Donna Ryen the science, techniques and demonstration this September in Chicago. Developed by neuroscience researcher and author Ronald Ruden, M.D., Havening has helped thousands of people worldwide, including veterans suffering from PTSD and other war-related stresses. The Havening Techniques belong to a larger group of treatments called psychosensory therapies, in which fully trained and certified practitioners use sensory input to alter thought, mood and behavior. “The consequences of trauma and difficult life events are stored in the brain and are activated by conscious or inadvertent recall, which generates symptoms such as stress and pain,” Ruden explains. “The Havening Techniques are designed to disrupt this pathway through a process called synaptic depotentiation. After performing the Havening Techniques, the distressing emotions, and sometimes even the ability to recall the memory, can be extinguished.”

actionalert healthbriefs Let’s Fight Hunger Together in Chicago

N

ancy Rotering, currently in her second term as mayor of Highland Park, states, “Food insecurity is something that most of us don’t think about every day, but it quietly affects people of all ages across the nation. The Northern Illinois Food Bank reports that nearly 600,000 people each year in northern Illinois rely on food pantries and meal programs to feed themselves and their families. Most are families with at least one working member of the household. Nancy Rotering Each day, their families have to make the tough choice between paying for food or rent, medicine and other essentials.” Rotering, who is running for Congress in the 10th district, is coordinating an ongoing food drive to assist food pantries in addressing this pressing need. She is accepting nonperishable, non-expired food donations from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays at her campaign headquarters, located at 1910 First Street, Suite 2N, in Highland Park. Campaign staff and community volunteers will transport the food to district pantries. “As a mother, I am concerned about any child going hungry. As a mayor, I have seen many of my residents struggle with food insecurity and have championed the issue, partnering with area organizations to take action to feed our hungry neighbors,” says Rotering. “This ongoing food drive will expand upon that effort.” For more information, to share ideas about how to fight hunger or to volunteer, visit Tinyurl.com/NancyRoteringHungerDrive.

It’s Never Too Soon to Begin Proper Dental Hygiene by Megan Teplitsky

D

r. Bernice Teplitsky, DDS, PC, the owner of Wrigleyville Dental, has been in the dental field for 15 years and a dentist for six years. She recalls, “When my grandmother was a dentist in the Soviet Union, her version of children’s dentistry was drastically different than mine—children didn’t go to the dentist twice a year for a cleaning or checkups. My grandmother only saw her patients if something was really, really wrong. To make matters worse, most families didn’t have the luxury of owning a toothbrush or just didn’t think it was important. My own mother didn’t use her first toothbrush until first grade, and even then she didn’t know how to use it properly. Baby teeth were considered unimportant and most children were never taught how to take care of their teeth.” Today, Teplitsky is a member of the American Dental Association, International Association of Oral Medicine and Your child’s first trip to the dentist Toxicology and the Academy of General should be at around 1 year old or Dentistry, and sits on the board of the within six months after their first Holistic Dental Association. Pediatric Compounding Offers Individualized Medication

T

aking medicine is not often a pleasant experience, and this is especially true when it comes to children. Fortunately, pediatric compounding can solve many of the issues that arise when a child is faced with a condition that requires treatment with medication. Compounding is the practice of skillfully preparing and creating medications in forms that best fit the patient’s individualized needs. For children, this may involve changing a medication that is commercially produced in a tablet or capsule into a liquid form for ease of swallowing, adding flavoring to a medication to make it more palatable, removing ingredients such as soy or gluten if the child has allergies to a certain component of a medication or creating a specific dosage strength that is not available normally. Whatever issue is preventing a child from taking their prescribed medications, pediatric compounding can help alleviate the problems and get the child well. At a compounding pharmacy, many individualized alterations and formulations can be performed on a medication to ensure that the child will have an easier time taking the medication and that the medication will be effective in treating what it is intended for. Compounding pharmacists work closely with the child’s physician to formulate the most effective, safe and desirable drug product. Thomas Hopkins, of Save-Rite Pharmacy & Compounding, is a PharmD candidate for 2018 graduation. Location: 3479 N. Broadway, Chicago. For more information, call 773-525-0766 or visit SaveRitePharmacy.com. See ad on page 6 and in the Community Resource Guide.

Happy Couples Sleep Closer Together

R

esearchers from the UK’s University of Hertfordshire conducted a study that measured the relative relationship satisfaction between couples and their sleeping proximity. More than 1,000 people were surveyed for the study. The researchers found that 55 percent of couples that typically faced each other but did not touch while sleeping were satisfied with their relationship. Of those that slept back-to-back but didn’t touch, 74 percent were satisfied with their relationship and those that slept in the same direction, but didn’t touch, had a 76 percent satisfaction rate. Even better, 94 percent of those that touched while sleeping, regardless of their relative positions, reported being satisfied. The closer the couples slept, the happier their relationships were reported to be.

Community Center Offers

Holistic Healing and Inspiration by Carrie Jackson

I

Dan King and Rita Hickman

NSIDE, a holistic and artistic community center in McHenry, is a stomping ground for local songwriters, musicians, healers, seekers and other creative types. Along with their sister organization, Inspire Massage, which offers massage and wellness programs for women of any age, they are putting a new face on what it means for people to connect with themselves and grow with their community. Rita Hickman is the founder of Inspire and co-owner, along with Dan King, of INSIDE. She is a shiatsu massage specialist, holds national certification for therapeutic massage and bodywork and holds a master’s degree in elementary education, among other accomplishments. A former teacher, she transitioned to massage because of her interest in cultural medicine and desire to continue building a positive community and encouraging people to connect. “Shiatsu takes all aspects of you and ties them together. It’s a great umbrella for all the holistic treatments,” says Hickman. Inspire Massage is housed at INSIDE, which welcomes artists and holistic practitioners and has a strong focus on music. King, who has been there for two years, describes Inspire as “the seed that grew into INSIDE.” King, with a management background, has been dabbling in music since he was a teenager. He was introduced to holistic wellness 22

in the 1990s and uses all these interests in his work at INSIDE. Their offerings are very broad, as is King’s taste in music. “I like everything from the Sex Pistols to the Supremes. If it sounds good to me, I like it.” Some of the more popular programs include drum circles, gong meditations and shamanism. They also offer kirtan chanting experiences, rock and pop performances, Feldenkrais, meditation, guided visualization, and specialty classes. One is titled Let’s Get Together and Talk About the Law of Attraction. While INSIDE is a very flexible space and welcomes new practitioners, they don’t sell any retail products or promote any one practice or religion. “It’s a space where communities can come together under the umbrella of holistic arts. It’s a space for people to grow. We are accepting of any belief or background,” says Hickman. They get much of their business through word of mouth from people that have attended a performance or taken a class and tell their friends about what a great time they had. INSIDE is always looking for new practitioners, leaders, healers and teachers. “Practitioners come from all over. We have brought in people from Canada, Thailand and right here in the community. We want to make sure they’re a good fit for our clients and customers. Our community is interested in diversity and looking beyond them-

Chicago www.NAChicago.com

selves and their minds,” says Hickman. Because Hickman and King have a partnership, the space is very energetically balanced. “We balance each other’s strengths and challenges. It’s very energetically clean, not male or female dominated,” says Hickman. Most of the clients at Inspire are women, and it’s an even mix of men and women at INSIDE. Especially at INSIDE, Hickman sees older generations mentoring younger generations. “We want people to be able to be vulnerable. It’s important to get to all the underlying things. Shiatsu, meditation and women-only classes can support that,” she says. At more than 1,300 square feet, the space can house a variety of practices and workshops and is very adaptable. “We’re not locked into any one idea and are always looking to expand and grow,” says King. Besides classes and workshops, INSIDE and Inspire also offer tools and resources for healing. “We especially focus on body/ mind tools so people can help themselves. People come in needing to deal with grief, loneliness or stress. We can’t fix or change someone, but we can offer them the resources to do the work on their own. It’s pragmatic, but also somewhat spiritual. It’s very powerful to lead instead of instruct,” says King. INSIDE has rental space available for private events and can assist with catering, set-up, promotion and logistics. They are always looking for people that have a vision to share, whether teaching a class, leading an energy circle, creating a support group or hosting a party. “This is a place that can transform you if you are ready and willing to grow. It’s a beautiful community,” says Hickman. INSIDE and Inspire are located at 1241 Green St., in McHenry. For more information, call King at 815-575-7997, Hickman at 815-245-9673 or visit Inside-Inspire.com or InspireMassage. com. See ad on page 41 and in the Community Resource Guide. Greencorps Youth Program Teaches Teens About Sustainability

T

he Greencorps Youth Program (GCYP) summer employment program helps Chicago youths from 15 to 19 years old find career and service projects related to horticulture, urban forestry, ecological restoration and bicycle maintenance. Now in its third year, the One Summer Chicago partnership is providing summer programming for approximately 800 youth participants, bringing the total number to 2,300 so far. Through the GCYP, Chicago public school students meet with instructors, mentors and community group leaders to engage teens in summer learning and meaningful work experiences. The program is designed to expose youth to sustainability in Chicago through handson experience, while also empowering them to explore career pathways and strengthen community connections. Participants gain knowledge and experience in areas that include landscaping, urban agriculture, urban forestry, ecological restoration, bike safety, bike mechanics and bicycle advocacy and marketing. This year, each GCYP student is eligible to earn the City Cyclist and Urban Sustainability digital badges, which are designed to visually represent and reward their achievements. Any GCYP teen completing both badges will earn a bicycle at the conclusion of the program. For more information on the launch of the One Summer Chicago Program, visit Tinyurl.com/GreencorpsJobs.

Qigong Healing and Universal Oneness (Pt. 1)

Interview with Jeff Primack, Founder of the Qi Revolution Conference Interviewer Kathy Rivera Wallace is a TV talk show host who regularly interviews leading wellness experts. Jeff Primack is a Qigong teacher that studied with many Qi masters from all over the world and has taught 50,000+ people at live Qi Revolution conferences across the USA. Kathy Rivera Wallace: I attended the Qi Revolution conference before and was blown away seeing so many different types of people practicing together. What makes learning Qigong in big groups more powerful and what do you think has allowed you to reach such a large audience? Jeff Primack: Where two are more are gathered a unified Qi field exists. Qigong breaks through people’s doubt with a tangible magnetic force. When a few thousand people practice Qigong in a convention center ballroom… the group energy from all the focused people make the Qi far stronger than what we can achieve alone. The most spiritually profound practices are breathing exercises that deliver a type of ‘euphoric high’ from the oxygen and energy absorption. Part of our success in sharing Qigong comes from the use of video-animation and specialized music allowing people to FEEL AND CONNECT TO QI POWERFULLY, which is the most important factor. Feeling 24

energy pulsing through your body is a clear benefit and men are especially drawn to the tangibility of Qigong. Feeling a “magnetic arc of energy” flowing overhead and pulsing through the arms is heavenly divine. Kathy Rivera Wallace: I found the Qi so life changing. Can you outline the overall essence of Qigong for newcomers? Jeff Primack: The first goal of Qigong is to absorb EXTERNAL QI IN THE AIR we breathe and live inside of. Breathing techniques and graceful movements harness and absorb this energy directly. Your PERSONAL ENERGY IS INTERNAL QI and this builds up quickly with practice and eventually “Overflows the Dan Tien”. The most profound secret of Qigong is to raise energy up the spine to the pineal and pituitary gland. I’ve spent my life studying with different Qigong masters from all over the world and it’s fascinating to see, unlike professional athletes, that the oldest Qigong practitioners have the strongest abilities.

Chicago www.NAChicago.com

Kathy Rivera Wallace: You’re currently teaching a Food-Healing class with a physician, Claudia Gabrielle, MD. How does the medical community respond to your teachings on using food to reverse specific diseases? Jeff Primack: To be honest, when I first began teaching Food-Healing in 2005 there was less interest from physicians than now. Due to more scientific studies now backing the food-protocols I’ve shared the last 10 years, I have a lot more attention from doctors and have certified many in our Conquering Any Disease Food Healing system. Dr. Claudia was deeply inspired by the Qi Revolution food component. She grew tired of prescribing Lipitor to every patient with high cholesterol, especially when studies now show high cholesterol is not even a key indicator for risk. Since meeting us last year she’s helped countless patients with our food protocols for heart disease and is teaching a class with me to present her latest testimonials! Both Qigong and Food Healing are beneficial to reaching our highest potential. Kathy Rivera Wallace: What about the Qi Revolution conference is the most exciting for people? Jeff Primack: Feeling your body coming alive and supercharged with energy is pretty exciting. Discovering your own higher potential is like an epiphany. Learning to use Food-Healing to maximize your state of well-being stands out, but most of all I’d say the 9-Breath circle is the tops. We are all holding hands doing a powerful Qigong breathing technique and the combined group energy is indescribable. Hands are electric and a feeling of oneness is experienced. (Part 2 of this interview appears next month) “Qi Revolution” comes to Schaumburg Convention Center September 12–15. Jeff Primack and a trained group of 20 Qigong teachers will teach four days of Qigong for only $149! This is the largest Qigong event in Illinois. Tickets and more info, 800-298-8970 or visit QiRevolution.com. See ad on page 2.

promote concentration and attention, enhanced. There is also a reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes. On the cellular level, inactivity decreases nerve cell growth and neuronal connections in the areas of the brain responsible for memory, motor learning and problem solving. The Journal of Pediatrics has published research that shows an increase in cognitive and brain function in ADHD kids engaged in a physical activity program. According to University of Illinois researcher Charles Hillman, “The findings demonstrate a causal effect of a physical program on executive control and provide support for physical activity for improving childhood cognitive and brain health.” In other words, children (and adults) that maintain some degree of motion while studying retain more of what they learn. A first step toward improvement is to make sure children in schools are getting regular physical activity during the day. Another is to change the dynamic of the classrooms. Having a flexible environment allows chairs and tables to move and be rearranged, depending on the subject of study. There are companies such as V/S (vs.de) making active chairs that swivel, rock, lean back and move from side-to-side, allowing a child to tilt forward without hunching over in class. Parents can work with individual schools on their integration into daily use. At home, parents can easily adapt and redesign the child’s homework and study environment to incorporate more motion-friendly furniture. In addition to the specialized chairs available, swivel and tilt office chairs, rocking chairs or other furniture can replace stiff-backed chairs. Tables with tiltable surfaces, such as drafting boards, can replace fixed tables and desks. To encourage learning retention, perhaps

M

any classrooms and educational environments in the U.S. are in a rut—children are expected to sit completely still in a rigid chair in an assigned spot at a stationary desk. A child that fidgets, squiggles around, tips their chair back or rocks from side-to-side is considered to be exhibiting inappropriate learning behavior. However, research shows that such a child is actually showing a healthy and necessary learning pattern. Inactive, sedentary learning actually has a disconnecting effect on the mind. The lack of motion creates discomfort, which leads to fatigue and less productive learning. On average, children 6 to 10 years old are able to sit still for five minutes; ages 11 to 15 up to 15 minutes; and 15 to 20 up to 25 minutes. A time-lapse video would show that no one is ever completely still. We all are in constant motion, shifting, turning, moving forward and backward and generally fidgeting. The movement creates better circulation, comfort and function. There is also a release of specific hormones that influence brain activity to allow better focus, concentration and attention span, as reflected in test scores increased by up to 40 percent as observed under controlled conditions. Other benefits of motion include spinal positions being regularly shifted; intervertebral disks continuously flooded with nutrients; complex back muscles stimulated; more than 100 joints in the spine in constant movement; internal organs operating more effectively; blood circulation and oxygen absorption optimized; and neurochemical processes, including those that 26

the best thing a parent can do at home is to relax and let go of the urge to stop their fidgeting. Allow the child to move, sit on the floor, twiddle a pen, swing their feet or otherwise maintain motion while studying. In the end, studies show the child will retain more of what they learn. start thinking about what to change. Just smile—and maybe even laugh out loud (for real, not just via text message). Infusing a little laughter and happiness into our cells can shift more than our mental state. It can slow down aging, change our mood and maybe even get rid of a wrinkle or two.

4. Throw a tantrum: Notice how our children can rage, whine, kick and scream, and then suddenly get distracted and be happy the next minute. Kids don’t dwell. They feel how they feel and then they move on. Allowing ourselves to yell, scream, stomp around the house and really let it out will free up space in our bodies to release stored emotional baggage, which is a leading causes of disease. So have a pouting party and move on, already.

5 Tips

for Parents (or Anyone)

to Find the Flow

We can become a curious investigator into our inner workings and ways of operating. We may have wondered about something “interesting” that we do, like why we get triggered by certain people, situations or circumstances. “What is this telling me about myself?” we may ponder. By asking an open question, not necessarily needing an answer, we allow ourselves to open to the possibility of “seeing” beyond our current scope of reason. It is in the dark and scary space between the asking and the answering that the magic of our lives dwells. Life is often like being stuck on the commode. Overwhelmed by stress, we have to learn to relax and find the flow where there is no fluidity. Here are five tips (we can learn from our kids) to release the pressures of life’s everyday squeeze.

1. Jump in the puddles: When it rains and we feel drenched by longings, unmet desires, impossible realities and shattered dreams, we can shift our perspective and start jumping in some puddles. It just may be the water that opens us up to a new flow. Be open to the possibility of playing in the rain instead of running for cover.

2. Take a dance break: When we are in situations that we find uncomfortable, unpleasant or just plain miserable, we can put on a favorite song and move our body. This can literally shift our frequency by changing our physiology. Perhaps all we need is a change of tune and a little booty shake.

3. Smile: Go ahead, grab that mirror and smile at the reflected image for three minutes straight. Don’t evaluate, don’t judge and don’t natural awakenings

GREEN ARTS Tips for Finding Safe Eco-Supplies by Avery Mack

C

reative energy is contagious,” says Kim Harris, co-owner of Yucandu, a hands-on craft studio in Webster Groves, Missouri. As one client crafter commented, “Art is cheaper than therapy and a lot more fun.” It doubles the pleasure when we trust the nature of our supplies. Arts and crafts stir the imagination, spur creativity and are relaxing. Yet, for some, allergies, chemical sensitivities and eco-consciousness can make choosing materials a challenge. Manufacturers are not required to list heavy metals, toxic preservatives or petroleum-based ingredients, even when they’re labeled “non-toxic”. User- and environment-friendly alternatives may be difficult to locate, but are worth the effort. After working with paint, glue, chalk and modeling dough, children may lick their fingers and be reluctant to wash hands thoroughly. Retirees with newfound time for hobbies may also have weakened immune systems at risk to chemical exposure. Everyone benefits from minimizing exposure to toxins.

Papers

For greeting cards, scrapbooking or mixed media, paper provides background, texture, pattern and color. 28

Tree-free paper uses agricultural residue or fibers from bananas, coffee and tobacco, and EcoPaper.com researchers anticipate similar future use of pineapples, oranges and palm hearts. Labels can be misleading. White paper has been bleached. Processed chlorine-free (PCF) means no bleaching occurred during this incarnation of the paper. Totally chlorine-free (TCF) papers are as advertised. Paper is called recycled if it’s 100 percent postconsumer-recovered fiber—anything less is recycled content.

Glues

For most projects, purchased glues are more convenient, longer lasting and easier to use than homemade. White glue and white paste, called “library paste”, are best with porous items like wood, paper, plastic and cloth. It takes longer to dry and needs to be held in place, but there are no fumes. “Jewelry is wearable art, so for mine, I primarily use water-based, nontoxic glues and sealers that simply wash off my hands,” advises Nancy Kanter, owner and designer of Sparkling Vine Design, in Thousand Oaks, California. Examples include Elmer’s Washable and Mod Podge.

Chicago www.NAChicago.com

Water-based tempera paint is easy to use; Chroma brand tempera removes some of the hazardous ingredients. “I use water-based, non-toxic acrylic paints and wine to paint recycled wine corks for my designs,” says Kanter. “This avoids harsh fumes and chemicals.” Note that acrylic paint can contain ammonia or formaldehyde. Oil paint produces fumes and requires turpentine, a petroleum-based product, to clean brushes. Aerosol spray paint is easily inhaled unless protective equipment is used.

Markers and Crayons

“Give kids great supplies and they’ll make great art,” maintains Harris. “They’ll also be respectful of how much they use.” Go for unscented, water-based markers, especially for younger children that are as apt to draw on themselves as on paper. Soy crayons are made from sustainable soybean oil, while retaining bright colors. Dustless chalk is preferred by some. Colored eco-pencils are another option. Beware of conventional dry erase markers, which contain the neurotoxin xylene; permanent markers emit fumes. Wax crayons are made with paraffin, a petroleum-based product.

Yarn and Other Fibers

For knit or crochet projects, choose recycled silk and cotton or bamboo, soy silk from tofu byproducts, or natural, sustainable corn silk. Sheep’s wool, organic cotton or alpaca fibers, raw or hand-dyed with natural colors, are environmentally friendly. Rayon is recycled wood pulp treated with caustic soda, ammonia, acetone and sulfuric acid. Nylon, made from petroleum products, may have a harmful finish.

More Materials

Canvas is typically stretched on birch framing, a sustainable wood. Look for unbleached, organic cotton canvas

If paint, glue, chalk or markers have a strong odor or the label says, “Use in a well-ventilated area,” it’s toxic. without primer. Runoff from an organic cotton field doesn’t pollute waterways. Experiment with homemade modeling clay. Many tutorials and photos are available online. Commercial modeling clay contains wheat flour, which can cause a reaction for the gluten-sensitive. For papier-mâché projects, recycle newsprint and use white glue, thinned with water. Premade, packaged versions may contain asbestos fibers. Eco-beads with safe finishes vary from nuts and seeds to glass and stone. For grownups that like to create their own beads, realize that polymer clays contain vinyl/PVC. In making artistic expression safe, being conscious of the materials used is paramount.

Hummingbird Parenting

Overprotection of children by what’s termed helicopter parenting, can cause a disabling sense of entitlement where kids begin to believe, possibly unconsciously, that they are entitled to a difficulty-free life, Carter observes. “There’s an epidemic of cheating because students don’t want to try hard, and they expect to be rescued,” she says. “Although it’s terrifying to let our kids fail, when we don’t let them experience difficulty, they see mistakes as being so awful they must be avoided at any cost. To gain mastery in any arena, we must challenge ourselves, even if that means making mistakes.” “We lose sight that we’re not raising children, we’re raising adults,” says Malibu, California, marriage, family and child therapist Susan Stiffelman, author of Parenting with Presence: Practices for Raising Conscious, Confident, Caring Kids. “Empower them to cope with ups and downs. Help them know and trust themselves by not legislating their opinions and by allowing them to experiment.” Children often struggle with transitions, especially when things don’t go as planned. Martin recommends, “When kids throw tantrums or argue to get out of a challenging situation that’s causing them anxiety, help them work through it. Tell them that you know they’re feeling anxious, that you’ve felt that way before, too, and then help by giving them something specific to do or focus on.” Independent outdoor play has been proven to help kids learn to exert self-control. America’s children aren’t allowed to roam freely outside to experience nature as previous generations did. In Last Child in the Woods, author Richard Louv cautions against being limited by modern factors such as restrictive subdivision covenants and media-induced fear. “There are risks outdoors, but there are huge psychological, physical and spiritual risks in raising future generations under protective house arrest,” he says. Louv prefers what’s called a hummingbird approach: “Hummingbird parents don’t hover over their kids with

The more you ask their opinion or invite them to teach you something, the more they’ll feel your support.” With sex education, the authors of The New Puberty, Pediatric Endocrinologist Dr. Louise Greenspan and Adolescent Psychologist Julianna Deardorff, Ph.D., emphasize the importance of being approachable from a young age, so kids naturally turn to their parents when sensitive questions arise. “It shouldn’t be about having ‘the talk’; it’s about maintaining an ongoing conversation,” says Greenspan. “Body odor is a good starting point in talking about body issues because it’s not intimidating and can be comfortably addressed by either parent.” Avoid rushing into subjects they’re not ready for by focusing on answering the questions that are posed, while offering a glimpse into the near future.

Deardorff says, “Pubertal changes happen over time, so be patient. Parents have a lot of anxiety and anticipation about puberty. When you start to see the first signs, you don’t have to communicate everything all at once.” Consider throwing a puberty party or a health workshop for a son or daughter and their friends. Invite a parent that is comfortable with the subject matter— a nurse, physician or teacher—to get the conversation started. “Fight the urge to emotionally or physically withdraw,” counsels Deardorff. “Sharing activities is a form of communication, too.”

Kids as Teachers

“By paying attention, we can learn a lot of skills from our kids,” says Brott. Generally, youngsters have a greater tolerance for other people’s mistakes and opinions than adults, and tend to be more laid back. They regularly teach spiritual lessons about giving and receiving love and happiness in ways we never imagined. Through all the inevitable challenges, Stiffelman notes, “When parenting with presence, we orient ourselves with whatever good, bad or difficult moment is unfolding and bring more of our self—our heart, consciousness, understanding and compassion—to hold steady as the seas get rocky. Children offer us opportunities to confront the dark and dusty corners of our minds and hearts, creating conditions to call forth the kind of learning that can liberate us from old paradigms.” It all allows us to lead more expansive and fulfilling lives as we open ourselves to more of the love, learning and joy that the adventure of parenting can bring. When we embrace the healing and transformation that is being offered through parenting with presence, the rewards can be limitless. Achieving

Brainwave Wellness for Better Health by Maytawee (Maggie Wilkins)

W

e all know the importance of taking care of our bodies, spending hours or even years on body wellness, perhaps by eating fresh and healthy foods and incorporating fitness and yoga into our lives. All of these are excellent for physical equilibrium, yet we probably have not spent as much time on brain wellness, the system that runs everything in our bodies. Each year, the brain’s neuronal pathways change, and limitations often form in these pathways when we are involved in a car accident or other mishap, leading to memory loss and even physical illness. If we have had such a trauma, it is likely that our brain’s communication pathways may require support. Otherwise, we may experience fatigue, depression, anxiety, fear, loss of sleep and more symptoms of brain imbalance over time. Brainwave entrainment refers to the brain’s electrical response to rhythmic sensory stimulation such as pulses of sound or light. The phenomenon was discovered around 200 A.D. by the Greek scientist Ptolemy, who

34

philosophized about the mental effects of sunlight generated by a spinning wheel. In 1665, Dutch scientist Christian Huygens recorded the first instance of controlled entrainment. The range of brainwaves includes beta (awake, thinking); delta (deep

meditative); theta (sleeping); alpha (alert, relaxed); gamma (conscious awareness in stillness); and the newly proposed Schumann Resonance (Earth electromagnetic peaks corresponding to alpha/theta). Brainwave wellness has become a hot topic, and due to our social structure, most of our time is spent in the beta wave state. Our brains are designed to use all the different wave frequencies within each 24-hour period, and is has been proposed by some people that too much beta frequency creates “heat” for the brain, making it difficult to experience joy. There are many ways to develop brainwave wellness, because the brain responds to sound and light input from our sensory organs. LED light therapy is claimed to be an excellent way to awaken neural pathways, typically using powerful, flickering lights to open up and activate the pineal gland, the “third eye” or “ajna chakra”, providing new neural pathways to stimulate a peaceful feeling of calm in our body. A healthy pineal gland connects us to the root of our soul wisdom in a harmonious natural and powerful way. This has been said to “bring us into balance with our own physiology.” The body knows how to respond to the light patterns, and a relaxation is automatically felt when brain wellness occurs. It is also recommended by proponents to support anti-aging.

Brain Wellness Experiments In 2014, Maytawee interviewed a Tibetan monk/nun that is a master of sun gazing, considered by some to be nature’s brain entrainment. Here are a few steps to achieve brainwave wellness without LED light therapy. n Every hour in your day, stop and take a conscious breath while moving your attention to your body. Do this until you feel some relaxation. You have just switched from a beta brainwave to a delta brainwave. n Take a walk in nature, smell the air, look at the trees and flowers and enjoy the sounds. You are now connected to the Schumann waves, a wonderful practice for feeling grounded.

Chicago www.NAChicago.com

n Once a day, sing along to some music that makes you happy. You have awakened your alpha brainwaves, which are excellent for creativity. n Rest in a still, quiet room and place a cool towel on your head, covering your eyes. Begin to follow your breath in and out, feeling your body expand and contract and dropping deeper into the rest state. You are now rejuvenating in the gamma wave state.

There are many different ways to create health and wellness. Just as we eat different foods to nourish our bodies, we are meant to experience different brain states. The brain is a powerful tool that is designed to restore the body back to optimal wellness. Maytawee studied with spiritual master Mooji and Monk Phra Bhasakorn and was ordained as a monk/nun. KID COOKERY

They Love Healthy Food They Make Themselves by Judith Fertig

I

n less than a generation, childhood obesity has risen substantially, most notably in the United States, according to the article “Child and Adolescent Obesity: Part of a Bigger Picture,” in a recent issue of The Lancet. The authors attest that modern culture’s promotion of junk food encourages weight gain and can exacerbate risk factors for chronic disease in our kids. When concerned parents have a picky child bent on eating only French fries, they could enroll them in healthy cooking classes that offer tastings and related hands-on experiences for youths from preschoolers through teens. Here, children are encouraged to try more foods, eat healthier and learn about meal preparation, plus sharpen some math, geography and social skills. Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Leah Smith, the mother of two elementary school children, founded Kids Kitchen and Chefs Club, in Austin, Texas, in 2011. She offers classes for chefs (ages 3 to 6), junior chefs (5 to 11) and senior chefs (11 to 14). Kids learn how to make dishes such as yogurt parfait popsicles with healthy grains clusters or roasted 36

tomato soup with homemade croutons. “I’m a firm believer that teaching kids about which foods are good for us, and why, will positively influence their lifelong eating habits,” says Smith. “Start right, stay right.” Elena Marre, also the mother of two elementary school children, faced the challenge of a picky eater in her family. In 2007, she started The Kids’ Table, in Chicago, and solved her own problem along the way. Says Marre, “It’s amazing how often I hear a child complain about not liking red peppers, dark leafy greens or onions at the beginning of a class. It’s so rewarding when that same child is devouring a dish made with those three ingredients at the end.” Healthy kids cooking classes provide a fresh way to combat poverty, according to the Children’s Aid Society, in New York City. The group started Go!Chefs in 2006 at community schools and centers throughout the city and knows how to make it fun with Iron Chef-style competitions. “When offered a choice between an apple and a candy on two consecutive occasions and with most having chosen

the candy the first time, 57 percent of students in the Go!Kids health and fitness program chose the apple the second time, compared to 33 percent in the control group,” says Stefania Patinella, director of the society’s food and nutrition programs. In Minnesota’s Twin Cities region, “We do a lot of outreach with Head Start, community schools and organizations like scout troops,” says Chef Ani Loizzo, Whole Foods Market’s culinary instructor at the Whole Kids Club Kitchen Camp, in Lake Calhoun. “We have many kids that know about organic and biodynamic farming and we talk about that in class. We might focus on a healthy ingredient like tomatoes in a one-hour class or explore the culture of Greece or Mexico through food in a longer session.” Loizzo loves the natural curiosity that kids bring to cooking classes. “Sparking an interest in exploring ingredients and flavors can also lead to learning how to grow a garden and interest in the environment,” she says. For children in areas where such cooking classes aren’t yet offered, there are still fun ways to involve them in healthy meal preparation. Maggie LaBarbera of San Mateo, California, started her Web-based company NourishInteractive.com in 2005 after witnessing the harmful effects of teenage obesity when she was an intensive care nurse. It offers educational articles for parents and free downloadable activities that engage children with healthy foods. “Every positive change, no matter how small, is a step to creating a healthier child,” says LaBarbera. “Together, we can give children the knowledge, facts and skills to develop healthy habits for a lifetime.” Judith Fertig blogs at AlfrescoFood AndLifestyle.blogspot.com from Overland Park, KS.

Nut Butter Granola Bars Yields: 8 bars

2¼ cups rolled oats ¼ cup shredded coconut (without added sugar) ½ cup applesauce 1 /3 cup nut butter (almond or peanut) ¼ tsp baking soda ½ cup raw honey or maple syrup 1 Tbsp milk or almond milk 3 Tbsp chocolate chips Preheat the oven to 350° F. Line a 9-by-13-inch pan with parchment paper. Bake for about 25 minutes. Let them cool completely before cutting. Store in a plastic container separated by parchment paper. They should keep for about two weeks and may be refrigerated.

Sea salt ½ lb (8 to 10) uncooked lasagna noodles Organic olive or coconut oil 1 cup ricotta cheese 1½ cups prepared marinara sauce 1½ cups packed baby spinach ½ cup shredded mozzarella Preheat oven to 400° F. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, add noodles and cook until al dente, 8 to 10 minutes. Drain well and gently transfer to a clean surface. Oil the inside of a small roasting pan or casserole dish and set it aside. Working with one noodle at a time, spread with about 2 tablespoons each of the ricotta and marinara, then top with spinach. Starting at one end, roll up the noodle snugly, and then arrange it in the pan either seam-side down or with the rolls close enough to hold each other closed. Pour the remaining marinara over assembled rolls, sprinkle with mozzarella and bake until golden and bubbly, 20 to 25 minutes. Adapted from a recipe from Whole Foods Market

cook them on Himalayan salt. The salt will get into the seafood during the cooking process, yielding a meal that tastes fresh from the sea.

Salt slabs work hot or cold

Grilling and Cooking on

Himalayan Salt Slabs Five Tips to Becoming a Gourmet by Isabella Samovsky

Himalayan salt slabs are great for turning a basic appetizer into an unforgettable experience. After all, why use a plain old serving tray when we can serve things on a dramatic-looking salt platter? Himalayan salt slabs are good for more than just displaying tasty treats, they make cooking more fun and help the finished product taste even better. Here’s what we need to know before we start cooking. This method will impart a salty seasoning

Cooking on Himalayan salt is a great way to inject more flavor into foods because some of the salt will naturally rub off onto whatever is cooking. Just be careful, though, as we don’t want to get too much salt onto the food. If foods are moist—like steaks and vegetables— cut them thinly before placing them on a Himalayan salt slab. That way, they can cook quickly, before they have a chance to suck up too much salt. 38

Tap into the power of oil

If the food simply can’t be sliced and we still want to cook it on Himalayan salt, oil will be our new best friend. Pouring a thin layer onto the Himalayan salt slab first will create a buffer between the food and the salt. As an added benefit, the oil will make the salt platters easier to clean later.

It’s perfect for seafood

To really savor the taste of shrimp, scallops and other small pieces of seafood,

Chicago www.NAChicago.com

A good Himalayan salt slab will be able to withstand sitting on top of the grill or gas range. If using an electric grill, place a wok ring or something similar underneath the salt so that it doesn’t sit directly on the burner. These slabs are just as effective when used in the freezer—they’ll provide a quick and easy way to freeze homemade ice cream, and the presentation will be far more dramatic than anything other method. For a great presentation, place raw vegetables, sushi or other appetizers onto a Himalayan salt slab that’s been chilled in the fridge. Because these slabs can retain a chill for several hours, they’re perfect for serving up things that need to be cold to be good.

Platters need to be heated slowly upon first use

Whether on the grill or the stove, Himalayan salt platters need to be heated gradually so that they don’t crack. Yes, this means cooking on Himalayan salt takes a little longer at first, but the yummy finished product is well worth it. Tips for Good Prenatal Health

The Importance of Monitoring Health Before Conception by Silvia Panitch

T

he nutrition and lifestyle that women adopt long before considering pregnancy will have a major impact on their babies and generations to come. Due to the rise of diabetes, hypertension and obesity all over the world, our descendants might not live as long as their parents did. One in 10 Americans has diabetes, but that number is even more sobering when we consider pre-diabetes. We know that many chronic diseases start in the womb, so maternal over- or under-nutrition, infections, smoking, stress and hormonal imbalances force the fetus to adapt, and those adaptations can lead into chronic illness in adult life. More women are entering pregnancy overweight or obese, which can lead to gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, preterm birth, cesarean sections, birth defects and chronic diseases in their children. For example, babies born with low birth weight are more likely to develop diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease and obesity compared to babies 40

of average weight. Babies of quite large birth weight are also more likely to develop diabetes. The field of preconception medicine is growing because we have become aware of the impact that health choices of mothers and fathers make will have on their offspring. The emerging field of genomics (the genes we have) and epigenomics (factors that can affect our genes) will allow us to make even more specific recommendations about nutrition. Many companies offer gene testing either via medical offices or online that can help us know our life story. Some genes that are not functioning well can have a huge impact on the mother and baby’s health, so this information can empower them to make the right nutritional choices. Some gene tests (MTHFR, MTRR, CBS, COMT, MTR, TCN2, FUT2) can give women the opportunity to make the necessary adjustments even before considering pregnancy. If certain genes are not functioning properly (SNP),

The oil of sunflower also acts as an emollient, providing much-needed moisture for the hair in summer, and it’s actually able to lock in that moisture. 3. Change to a shampoo and conditioner with added UV protection from sunflower oil, as well as adopting a leave-in conditioner to can take on the go. 4. Wear a hat or a scarf to protect hair and scalp. Damaged scalp can leave hair inadequately nourished for months.

Are You Present in Your Life? Panache Desai on Banishing Busyness and Stressing to Start Living

P

anache Desai is a contemporary spiritual teacher and inspirational visionary whose message of love and selfacceptance has drawn thousands of people from around the world to his seminars and workshops. Not aligned with any religious or spiritual tradition, he empowers people to free themselves of pain, suffering, sadness and self-limiting beliefs. Born and raised in London, England, Panache spent his childhood immersed in an atmosphere of prayer and worship and has committed his life to being a vibrational catalyst empowering humanity in the deepest states of connection and awareness and helping people everywhere to directly experience divine consciousness for themselves. He serves on faculty at Omega Institute Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health and was a recent featured speaker at the United Nations Enlightenment Society, Healing with the Masters, I CAN DO IT!, Celebrate Your Life and the Sun 42

Valley Wellness Festival. His first book, Discovering Your Soul Signature: A 33-Day Path to Purpose, Passion and Joy, is now available online and in selected bookstores. Panache offers these thoughts to Natural Awakenings Chicago readers to help us become more present in our daily lives. “Your kids have piano, soccer, football, tutoring. You’re working 45 hours (and then some) a week. Your friends want you at their dinner party. You’re chairing a charity function. You’re now caring for your parents, managing doctors’ appointments and finances. The car needs repair. And, by the way, taxes are due. “Everywhere we turn, we hear that it’s time to unplug, take a breather and chill out. We may even take that advice. But vacations seem to fly by, ‘me’ time falls by the wayside, and our attempts to meditate, pray or practice stillness go right out the window. We’re always ‘putting out fires’, or ‘totally swamped’. We think we can make success, love even happiness happen. But are you willing to consider that it may be our busyness that’s keeping us from real joy and peace? “Are you caught in the frenetic spin cycle of doing? Constantly anxious, physically exhausted, emotionally depleted? Is your hectic schedule hindering your job performance, your children, your love life, your friendships or most importantly, your own personal health and well-being? If so, you need to ask yourself, ‘Do I feel present in my own life?’ “Chronic busyness can take a serious toll on us. When we’re over-scheduled, we think it’s our job to control or force events, instead of letting things unfold with grace. We treat other people as if they’re simply check marks on a to-do list. And most importantly, we become detached from our divine selves. “Our addiction to busyness actually stems from fear. We’re afraid we’ll miss out on something, be thought of as unproductive, selfish, lazy, a bad parent, not good enough, or in a world that’s more connected than ever, ironically disconnected and left behind. We’re afraid of how others will perceive us, or in our stillness, be forced to confront our regret, guilt and shame. “Here’s the truth—we may remain perpetually on the go to avoid our feelings of unworthiness. If we keep ourselves incredibly busy with the little stuff, we can put off thinking about

our marital troubles, our child’s failing grades or the high-stakes work project looming on the horizon. Our busyness gives us an excuse to avoid showing up fully in any situation and escape the responsibility of being our authentic selves, living our soul signature. “The divine dwells in every single part of your experience—even your busyness. You have access to everything you need in each moment. Stop the running, the scrambling and the worry. Just breathe. Take time to be in the present moment each and every day. Even mundane tasks can be performed with mindfulness. Cook dinner with presence. Change the litter box with presence. Fill your gas tank with presence. As little as three minutes of silence a day can consciously anchor you and restore your state of connection with yourself. When you allow space for soulfulness, you are present in every moment and make your life a living meditation. Let go, be present, and let your beautiful life flow. There’s no rush. You’ve got all time in the world.”

Speaking with Strangers The Simple Pleasures of Connecting by Violet Decker

T

echnology tends to isolate us from others, but science points to the real value in reaching out. On average, we come into contact with more than 100 people a day, but often may not make any real connection with them. On a typical college campus, it’s rare to see a student not plugged in while walking from class to class. Saying “Hi” to an acquaintance or complimenting someone in passing is nearly impossible. These little day-to-day interactions could provide a steady source of simple pleasures for all if we regularly made the most of such opportunities. Part of the reason we intentionally isolate ourselves might be the false belief that we’ll be happier by doing so, according to a recent University of Chicago study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology. When subway riders were asked how they thought they would feel if they spoke to a stranger, nearly all of them predicted that the ride would be “less pleasant” than if they kept to themselves. After the ride, however, the results were unanimous: Those that spoke to another person reported having a more positive experience than those that sat in silence.

Parents teach children not to talk to strangers, but as adults, we miss a lot if we don’t. Even small talk can make a big difference in the quality of our day. It’s easy to try it to see if we don’t end up with a smile on our face. It’s ironic that young people spend hours each day on social networking sites, texting others and making plans with friends so they won’t sit alone at night, yet are getting worse at making such connections face-to-face. Even seated at the same table, conversational eye contact is becoming a lost art, another casualty of technology. Talking with others correlates with better communication skills, too. A 20-year study from Stanford University concluded that its most successful MBA graduates were those that showed the highest interests and skills in talking with others. So, instead of shying away from chatting with a fellow commuter or asking a cashier how her day is going, say “Hello.” It’s bound to make everyone’s day better. Animal Talk They Have Lots to Say If We’d Only Listen by Sandra Murphy

Some people talk to animals. Not many listen, though. That’s the problem. ~A. A. Milne, Winnie the Pooh

Brave New World In less than 10 years, we’ll see a universal translator for communicating with dogs and cats, predicts Con Slobodchikoff, Ph.D., professor emeritus of biological sciences at Northern Arizona University, in Flagstaff. Just like language apps change, for example, a French phrase into English, the device would translate barks into “Put on Animal Planet,” or meows to “Feed me tuna.” Computers will foster better understanding between humans and animals. David Roberts, a computer science assistant professor, and his team at North Carolina State University, in Raleigh, have received a grant from the National Science Foundation to develop a collar to send wireless instructions to dogs via vibrations. Multiple sensors return information about the dog’s heart rate and more, which is especially helpful for service dogs taught not to show stress or distress. Even without such technology, we can all enjoy improved relationships with animals, domestic and wild, by learning to listen. Veterinarian Linda Bender, an animal advocate in Charleston, South Carolina, and author of Animal Wisdom, says, “We all have the ability to understand animals. It gets trained out of us around age 7. It’s not about doing, it’s about being, a connection through the heart.” Meditation quiets the mind from daily concerns, allowing us to stay open, listen and be aware. 44

Everyday Examples Author Frances Hodgson Burnett captures the essence of this childlike sensibility in A Little Princess: “How it is that animals understand things I do not know, but it is certain that they do understand. Perhaps there is a language which is not made of words and everything understands it. Perhaps there is a soul hidden in everything and it can always speak, without even making a sound, to another soul.” In Portland, Oregon, intuitive Melissa Mattern relates examples supporting Burnett’s premise from her own experiences. “My newest cat, Rocket, beat up my other cats and ran amok. Nothing helped until I took a class in animal communication.” She asked her other cats what to do. “They were clear that I should have consulted them before bringing Rocket into the house,” she says. “I asked Rocket if he would like another home and the picture of a chef’s hat popped into my mind. When we found the perfect home for Rocket, the man was a chef whose only other pet is a turtle that lets Rocket sleep with him. Everyone is happy with the results.” Charli, a 14-year-old pointer, travels the world with her family. Her owner, Cynthia Bowman, shares one of her favorite stories: “As we planned our move to Spain, Charli got ill. I explained, ‘We want you to go too, but if you can’t, tell me.’ A picture of a smoked ham popped into my head. I didn’t understand, but Charli got well and went along,” she says. “In our new Gipuzkoa neighborhood, a deli sells hams, just like I pictured. I can’t explain how Charli knew.” It becomes a matter of trust. “Thoughts or mind pictures can be easy to dismiss or mistrust as imagination,” she comments. “Every species has something they do best. With humans, it’s problem solving and advanced thinking. We’ve separated ourselves from nature. We need to remember we’re all interconnected,” Bender says. “When we learn to tune into ourselves, be heart-centric and radiate compassionate energy, it makes us irresistible to other creatures.”

Exotic Tales Wild animals communicate with David Llewellyn. As a writer of outdoor/nature blogs, he’s traveled full time in a 30-foot RV since 2002. “They don’t understand words, but go by what’s in your soul. I’ve picked berries with black bears and met a mountain lion and her two cubs along a trail without ever being harmed,” he says. “Often, hikers are told, ‘Make yourself look big and scream.’ I say ‘Hello,’ comment on the day and thank them for letting me share their space.” Staying calm is vital. Bender agrees. Grabbed by
