Yet, I’ve only seen a total of five monarch butterflies this season. The same holds true for many gardeners I know, with some exceptions in our area where surrounding conditions are ideal. Monarch butterflies are our Illinois state insect, yet for another year, overall populations of this annual migrator remain low. Monarch populations are hard to estimate, as the annual migration from Mexico to the Midwest and Canada, and then back to its overwintering territory in Mexico’s forests, includes several generations. Populations may change as they move through Texas and our area, only to bounce back or decrease again late in the season. Much of the research relies on the reports of citizen scientists who work with national groups like Monarch Watch (MonarchWatch.org) and Monarch Joint Venture (MonarchJointVenture.org), as well as through local organizations. Data for 2017 won’t be available until the winter, but looking at prior year data compared to populations of 20 years ago topping 1 billion, the monarch remains in serious decline. As these butterflies migrate, they need protective rest stops and areas rich with milkweed, the only place where they lay their eggs, and upon which the larvae feed. Scientists attribute the decline to loss of food along the migration path, deforestation in Mexico, drought and the disappearance of milkweed habitat on Midwestern farms. The National Resource Defense Council (NRDC) adds one more factor: rampant use of herbicides containing glyphosate, one of the main ingredients in Monsanto Roundup, to manage vegetation along U.S. highways. Herbicides, combined with highway mowing, have decimated milkweed, and many states are working with environmental groups to study their roadside management policies. But new concerns are rising, says the NRDC, as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) this year re-approved the registration for Dow’s Enlist Duo, a combination herbicide designed to kill milkweed. You can create a yard that’s hospitable to monarchs and other pollinators by growing native plants instead of ornamentals. Yes, Asiatic lilies and exotic flowers are pretty, but they do nothing for birds, monarchs and other insects that cannot feed on these non-native plants. Monarch Watch offers how-to information for planting milkweed and setting up a butterfly garden. The Chicago Botanic Garden (ChicagoBotanic.org) has ideas for planting pollinator strips and maintains a beautiful butterfly garden at their Glencoe location. A quick Google search will pull up lots of other monarch and native plant resources. Enjoy your August!

his morning, I made an exciting discovery in our garden’s small milkweed plants, as my eyes caught a chewing pattern that repeated across several leaves—could it be? After carefully looking at the underside of three leaves, I spotted the little guy, all one-quarter-inch of tricolor striping. The first monarch caterpillar I’ve ever seen in my own garden!

Traditional Chinese Medicine and Autism

A

PopTalk! titled Reframing Autism, with Dr. Melanie Katin, DACM, L.Ac., will take place from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. on August 9 in Chicago. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is one of the methods of treatment parents will seek out for autism and spectrum disorders because these are symptomatic problems that other therapies do not address. TCM excels in moderating issues related to gastrointestinal disorders, sleep disorders, sensory processing disorders and ADHD-type behaviors, which are all concurrent with the autism diagnosis. In this talk, attendees will learn basic information about nutritional strategies, acupressure for autism and qigong for autism. Once these quality of life disrupters are calmed and quieted, a child can have better success in responding to their other therapies, and thrive. Katin, on the faculty of the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, has specialized in the treatment of children since 2004. Admission: $5 donation. Location: 65 E. Wacker Pl., Room 17-6, Chicago. For more information, call 773-477-4822 or 888-729-4811 or visit PacificCollege.edu. See ad on page 17 and in the Community Resource Guide.

In Her Boots Training Supports Women in Agriculture

W

omen with the goal of launching an agriculture venture or those already farming will want to attend the In Her Boots workshop from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., August 24, at the Radical Root Organic Farm, in Libertyville. Hosted by farmer Alison Parker and the Rural Women’s Project of the Midwest Organic & Sustainable Education Service (MOSES), the tour offers visitors a behind-thescenes perspective of the 10-acre certified-organic Alison Parker and Huck farm where she and her husband, Alex Needham, raise diversified vegetables for a CSA, farmers’ market and farm stand. The day includes a detailed farm tour, a locally sourced lunch and breakout sessions covering a range of topics of interest to beginning women farmers such as starting agritourism ventures like B&B farmstays, working with state agencies, diversifying, and with the recent lifting of the ban on the sale of home-baked items in Wisconsin, selling baked goods. Because women make up one of the fastest-growing groups of new farmers, this event uniquely looks at farming from a gender lens and provides an inspiring blend of practical information, skill-building, farm tours, resource connections and networking opportunities. Cost is $50 and scholarships are available. For more information, call Lisa Kivirist at 717-778-5775 or email Lisa@MosesOrganic.org. he Midwest College of Oriental Medicine is offering distance education courses for those desiring a rewarding career in Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture, herbs and massage, the natural choice for a wide range of healthcare issues. The fall quarter begins September 30. The biological science portion of the program, traditionally offered on weekday evenings, is now available online as LiveStream hybrid courses. Students also earn internship hours in the college clinic. Midwest College offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition, a Master of Science degree in Oriental Medicine and a Master’s level certification in Acupuncture. thriveMD Introduces Cutting-Edge Technology

T

his month, thriveMD, located in Schaumburg, is introducing two new services: Ultraviolet blood irradiation (UVB) therapy and the HOCATT™ Plus Sauna system. Both are cutting-edge modalities that offer great health benefits. Ultraviolet blood irradiation (UVB) therapy, a photo-oxidation treatment, consists of briefly exposing a sample of the blood to ultraviolet light. The most dramatic effect is the stimulation of the immune system and specific enzyme systems. Additional benefits include deactivation of toxins, increase in the oxygen-combining power of the blood and oxygen transportation to organs, activation of white blood cells and antiinflammatory effects. The HOCATT Plus Sauna system is a single unit developed for strategic wellness and healing. Using a combination of 10 advanced therapies in one 30-minute session, the HOCATT Plus detoxes the body, improves circulation, boosts energy and strengthens the immune system. Patients receive treatment for common symptoms of illness, anti-aging, weight loss, detoxification, pain management and athletic improvement. Because of the way the technology supports the immune system, cancer patients receiving HOCATT Plus treatments experience fewer side effects while undergoing chemo and radiation therapies. thriveMD has one of only three HOCATT Plus machines in the country. Natural Awakenings readers receive 15 percent off single sessions and already discounted 10-session packages during the month of August. Location: 1355 Remington Rd., Ste. I, Schaumburg. For appointments, call 312-600-5070 or email Info@ThriveMD.org. For more information, visit ThriveMD.org. See ad on page 15 and in the Community Resource Guide.

Fighting Cancer with Chinese Medicine

Chinese Medicine (CM) fills gaps in cancer prevention and treatment with the safe use of herbs, bodywork and supplements, as well as mind-body techniques that are beneficial for more than just symptom relief. CM treatments are well-known as complementary therapies to counter side effects that include nausea, pain, fatigue and insomnia from conventional cancer treatment such as chemotherapy and radiation. Acupuncture can also increase patients’ tolerance of conventional care, improving survival rates. CM utilizes a different understanding of the body and disease, using unique diagnostic methods and a holistic approach which fosters profound changes in physiology, increasing the chance of success in cancer treatment. Chinese herbs and diet can also be powerful tools to reduce the risk of relapse.

Sufficient Sleep Supports Immunity

A study from the University of Washington, in Seattle, tested the relationship of immune system functioning to lack of adequate sleep. To rule out genetic factors, which experts say account for 31 to 55 percent of individual sleep patterns, researchers tested blood samples from 11 pairs of adult identical twins (genetic matches) with differing sleep habits. They found that the immune system was depressed in the twin that slept less. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Americans are sleeping 1.5 to two hours less than they did 100 years ago, and more than 30 percent of working people average fewer than six hours a night. Dr. Nathanial Watson, lead author and co-director of the university’s Sleep Medicine Center at Harborview Medical Center, observes, “Seven or more hours of sleep is recommended for optimal health.”

Meditating Raises Spirits More than a Vacation

S

cientists from the University of California at San Francisco, and Harvard Medical School, in Boston, tested the effect of vacations and meditation on the genes of 64 women between the ages of 30 and 60 that were novice meditators. They all spent six days at the same resort in California. Half participated in a meditation program that included yoga, self-reflection exercises and mantra meditation; the other half did not engage in onsite meditation. The researchers also studied a group of 30 experienced meditators already participating in the resort’s meditation program. Blood sample tests and surveys from all 94 women were conducted at intervals: once right before their stay, once right after, a third one month post-vacation and then 10 months after the trip. All the women displayed significant changes to their molecular network pattern after the six days, with the most substantial genetic changes related to immune function and stress response. One month after the resort experience, all groups continued to display improvements. However, the novice meditators showed fewer symptoms of depression and stress for a significantly longer period than the women not participating in the meditation exercise.

White Tara Retreat for Spiritual Renewal by Carrie Jackson

A

s an intuitive healer, Tara White has worked with people to foster personal renewal and spiritual connections through yoga, bodywork, acupuncture, herbal treatments and reiki. In 2016, she opened White Tara Retreats, in Richmond, to allow guests to further experience relaxation, reflection and healing. She offers custom retreat weekends for individuals, couples and groups that are private and personalized. The guest suite includes a spiritual sanctuary with a fireplace, a separate bedroom, kitchen and full bath, as well as an individual outdoor patio. The secluded location, natural surroundings and relaxed environment make an ideal getaway for couples looking to reconnect, empty nesters that need a change of pace, family bonding or anyone that needs a few days of solace from the demands of a busy lifestyle.

couple or group’s individual needs and goals. We offer a number of services for them to choose from that help restore the soul, heal the body and refresh the spirit. The 4,000-square-foot house has rooms for meditation, private yoga instruction, reiki, crystal bowl chakra balancing and a spiritual library. We have experts that come in to lead workshops on topics like Meditative Journey on the “Inner Dance”, and special events like a Medicine Wheel Gathering and Rainbow Crystal Healing Ceremony. Bhikkhuni Vimala, a Buddhist monk who was ordained in Sri Lanka, leads a Present Moment Meditation workshop to help participants experience life directly instead of thinking about it, and avoid the anxiety, tension, guilt and regret that comes from being in future or past thoughts.

How can a retreat help people feel refreshed?

Why is connecting to nature so important for healing?

I find many people are on the verge of an emotional meltdown, just from the constant demands and information overload in our society today. It’s overwhelming, and is causing people all kinds of unhealthy stress. My weekend retreats are personalized to the

When we become aware of our natural surroundings, we can experience spiritual silence and feel a part of something larger than ourselves. Our retreat center sits on an 80-acre nature preserve of rolling hills, oak forests and meadows that is ideal for hiking or exploring the

environment. There is a Native American medicine wheel, which is a sacred place to pray, meditate, contemplate and strengthen our connection with nature. We offer walking meditation workshops that encourage people to move at a pace that matches the soft, swaying trees and fresh air. As they become aware of each step, they fully enter the present moment. The house is also surrounded by rivers and streams, which remind us that energy is always moving and changing. Even in the winter, seeing the trees frozen in ice and walking through the bright, cold snow is invigorating and exhilarating. Being in nature is an oasis from everyday stresses and an affirmation of the universal life force energy that we all are a part of.

How can we increase our universal life force energy? Through meditation, reiki and acupuncture, we are able to get out of our heads and connect to something bigger. As we encounter different thoughts and feelings during the day, our chakras are constantly opening and closing. The vibrations from singing bowls help to balance these. I do a thorough body scan, from root to crown, and see what needs to be adjusted. In reiki, I help to provide universal life force energy healing, or qi. A treatment enhances relaxation and fosters feeling of peace, security and well-being. When we are emotionally, physically and spiritually balanced, we are better able to manage the stresses of everyday life. We are able to respond instead of react to outside triggers and demands with peace and grace. When we stay in the present moment, we are in a state of consciousness totally free of negativity. White Tara Retreat is located at 6603 Oak Hill Dr., in Richmond. For more information, call 815-728-1050, or visit WhiteTaraRetreat.com. See ad on page 21. Get a Good Night’s Sleep Five Solutions for Sleep Apnea by Lloyd Jenkins

A

n estimated 18 million people in the U.S. suffer from some form of sleep apnea. From the Greek expression for “want of breath,” sleep apnea causes cessation of breathing during the night. Bouts usually last from 10 to 30 seconds and can occur from just a few times to several hundred. The main cause is the throat muscles becoming too relaxed during sleep and constricting the airway. Two out of four people with the condition do not even realize they are sleep deprived due to apnea, and thus are at greater risk of suffering from both short-term ailments such as migraines or extreme fatigue, and long-term effects that include stroke and heart disease.

1

Lose Weight via Diet and Exercise Most people find the problem clears up or is greatly improved when they lose weight. One of the easiest and healthiest ways is eating only fruit from morning until noon, and then eating healthy, nutritious meals for lunch and dinner. Avoid processed, sugar-laden and deep-fried foods. Exercise at least four times a week. Doing moderate exercise for just 40 minutes has been shown to significantly reduce sleep apnea (Sleep journal). Use a 22

medicine ball to follow a trainer tutorial at Tinyurl.com/25-MinMedicineBallWorkout. A mini-trampoline also offers a safe and effective workout. A brisk 20-to-30-minute daily walk is a must for better sleep.

2

Sleep on Either Side Lying on the back encourages throat muscles to close up and the tongue to fall toward the back of the throat. Shifting onto one side reduces this discomfort and potential apnea episodes. Using one pillow beneath the head allows the neck to rest at a more natural angle, rather than pushing the chin toward the chest, which restricts the airway.

3

Vitamins D and C Almost everyone is deficient in vitamin D, even many in sunny regions, reports Dr. Joseph Mercola in his report, The Amazing Wonder Nutrient. Wisely managed sun exposure supplies vitamin D—no more than 20 minutes a day, 10 minutes on each side—without suntan lotion. Alternatively, a high-dose of a quality vitamin D supplement measuring 5,000 international units is adequate, but always take it along with vitamin K2, which helps the body process calcium properly to avoid overdose problems.

Chicago www.NAChicago.com

Our body does not store vitamin C, so we need at least 2,000 milligrams daily to maintain good health. A study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine found that vitamin C can reduce damage caused by sleep apnea. High-content foods include bell peppers, dark leafy greens, kiwi fruit, broccoli, berries, citrus fruits, tomatoes, peas and papayas.

4

Magnesium, the Master Mineral From 70 to 80 percent of mankind is deficient in magnesium, which has been connected with prevention of degenerative diseases and mental health and is often the missing mineral in an individual’s wellness equation, according to Enviromedica’s Ancient Minerals. It also regulates muscle function, including those in the upper throat involved with apnea. Organic foods and farmers’ market offerings may have higher levels of magnesium, especially those packed with green chlorophyll. Liquid chlorophyll is available in most health stores. Start by drinking one glass (250 milliliters) per day for a week, and then take two tablespoons daily. Spinach, chard, pumpkin seeds, yogurt, kefir, almonds, black beans, avocados, figs, bananas and dark chocolate (avoid brands with white sugar) are good sources.

5

Helpful Natural Medicines n Just before bedtime, consume one teaspoon of olive oil (or organic honey) combined with three drops of lavender essential oil. n Supplement with serotonin precursor 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan), which complements magnesium. n One of the best pure sources of omega-3—a top remedy for sleep apnea by protecting cells from stress—is krill oil (Alternative Medicine Review). Sleep apnea causes long-term oxidative stress and puts severe demands on the body, which is thought to deplete omega-3 levels. Lloyd Jenkins is a certified naturopath native to Canada and owner of the Budwig Cancer Clinic, in Malaga, Spain. He’s the author of seven books and many articles on treating common diseases using natural therapies.

Combating Stinging Insect Allergies by Lisa Sullivan, MD

Editor’s note: Stinging insects, such as bees, wasps and hornets, are with us all summer and can cause reactions at any time if they sting. But by August and September, wasps such as yellow jackets get particularly aggressive as colonies transition from reproducing worker insects to producing new queens and males, and seek out not just protein, but carbohydrates such as sugary foods from human gatherings. In addition, wasps are more aggressive defending underground nests in lawns and backyards as the new colonies form. Even more docile colony bees (such as honeybees) are more easily provoked as they prepare their colonies for colder weather. Unfortunately, these insects that share our outdoor space may bring unintended harms to children and adults alike if they sting.

I

t is important to know that anyone can develop a severe insect allergy and even non-allergic individuals can experience a lethal reaction from multiple stings. Anaphylaxis from an insect sting is a systemic, full body, allergic immune response that can be life-threatening. Most people associate anaphylaxis with hives or trouble swallowing, but this is only partially correct. Anaphylaxis can affect all body systems in different combinations, and thus may fail to produce a telltale hive or swallowing clue until it is too late. It is better to think of anaphylaxis as a rapid, downhill spiral of symptoms that can involve any body part or organ, generally within minutes to an hour after it is triggered by an insect sting. For example, if a friend is stung and suddenly becomes ill with vomiting, diarrhea and dizziness, we should suspect anaphylaxis, and not the stomach flu. The same would be true if someone started having problems with their asthma shortly after a sting. Therefore, if someone experiences any symptom other than localized swelling within the first hour of a sting, it is always best to 24

administer injectable epinephrine immediately, and then call 911. A high-risk individual with an insect venom allergy may choose to inject epi-

nephrine even before symptoms appear. This drug works “like magic” to quickly reverse the symptoms, but this effect may be short-lived. Carrying a spare auto-injector (such as an EpiPen or AuviQ) and getting to the emergency room quickly is a must. If with someone that becomes a victim to anaphylaxis or passes out after being stung, don’t hesitate to locate their epinephrine auto-injector and use it. The risk of harm from using it when not needed is negligible compared to the risk of not using it when it’s desperately needed. Also, if they have forgotten or don’t have an injector and appear to be in trouble, don’t be shy to make an announcement. It is likely that someone nearby has one on hand. Even a child’s dose is better than none at all. A more common and less worrisome occurrence is when someone develops a large, localized swelling around the insect sting. Although uncomfortable, they are unlikely allergic, but that is best determined in consultation with a boardcertified allergist. When insects sting, most people experience an immediate localized burning and swelling that can persist for days, due to the venom toxins at the site of injury. The amount of venom injected and the person’s immunity in the skin will determine how large the localized reaction becomes. As long as a

AVOIDING INSECT STING REACTIONS Those that suspect a venom allergy should be formally evaluated and tested by an allergist. If an allergy is confirmed, then the standard of care is to receive three to five years of immunotherapy (allergy shots). Once maintenance immunotherapy is reached, at about three to six months, a patient can enjoy an estimated 97 percent protection against severe sting reactions. n Always carry an epinephrine injector and don’t be afraid to use it. n To avoid getting stung, have a professional eliminate nests on the property. n Avoid perfume, cologne and fragrant soaps. n Choose red colors over black. Dull clothes without designs, preferably red or grey tend to be less interesting to insects. One theory is that because insects see into the UV range to locate flowers, they ignore colors that don’t show up under a black light. n Wear a cap or hat. n Move slowly. If bees or wasps sense danger, they produce a scent to attract others in their colony. n To lessen the chance of a severe reaction, remove all stingers immediately with the swipe of a fingernail or credit card. How fast the stinger is removed is more important than the method used.

Chicago www.NAChicago.com

local reaction remains limited to the skin and does not appear in other areas of the body, it is generally not life-threatening. An exception would be when a local reaction occurs near the mouth or neck; it may directly impinge on the airway. Local reactions neither increase nor predict an individual’s risk for systemic/anaphylactic reactions. They do, however, increase the likelihood of having larger local reactions in the future.

age 70. Having a BRCA mutation can also lead to an increased risk of having other cancers, such as peritoneal and cancer in the fallopian tubes. The BRCA gene is not specific to women. Men with family risk factors should also be advised that having the BRCA gene increases a man’s risk for not only breast cancer, but prostate and pancreatic cancers. Additionally, families of Ashkenazi Jewish descent have a higher prevalence of BRCA mutations than other people in the U.S.

Genetic Testing

ASSESSING CANCER RISK with Genetic Testing by Leta M. Vaughan DNP, CNM

A

cancer diagnosis can be a frightful and devastating experience. According to the National Cancer Institute, 1,685,210 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in the U.S. in 2016, with the five most common being breast, lung, prostate, colon and rectum, and bladder. Additionally, melanoma, endometrial and pancreatic cancer are ranked in the top 15 of new cancer cases. The U.S. Cancer Statistics Working Group states the most common cancer among women of all races, and the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in women, is breast cancer. Lung and colorectal cancer come in as the most common cancers in women and contribute to the leading causes of deaths among women.

Genetics and Cancer

Cancer itself is a harmful mutation, or change, in the DNA. All cells continually change, and if the change causes a mistake, the body typically repairs itself. But with cancer, the mutation continues without repair and is harmful to cell growth. Most cancers are random and develop more frequently with age, but up to 10 percent of cancers are inher26

ited, and increase a person’s chance of not only getting cancer, but developing it earlier in life. Biological family members are those that matter when looking at our inherited genetic family history. Knowing if we carry an inherited mutation can provide us and our healthcare provider assistance in making better and more informed decisions about future screenings for early cancer detection and treatment options if cancer were to be detected.

BRCA Gene

In 1994, the first BRCA1, or breast cancer gene, was discovered, and the second, BRCA2, in 1995. BRCA genes are inherited mutations that increase a woman’s risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Both of these cancers, when associated with BRCA mutations, tend to occur earlier in a woman’s life. The BRCA gene can be inherited from either the mother or father, and this is why screening questionnaires look at both sides of a family. It is estimated that 55 to 65 percent of women that inherit a BRCA mutation will develop breast cancer by the age of 70, and up to 39 percent will develop ovarian cancer by

Chicago www.NAChicago.com

In 2013, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommended women that have family members with breast, ovarian, fallopian tube or peritoneal cancer be evaluated to see if they have a family history that is associated with an increased risk of a harmful mutation in one of these genes. After meeting specific criteria for family cancer screening questions, genetic testing is available in the forms of a simple blood or saliva test. It is imperative to use a reputable and established genetic testing laboratory for genetic testing. Perhaps the gold standard in genetic screening, Myriad (Myriad. com) has developed one of the most comprehensive programs for testing both women and their male relatives for hereditary cancer risk. The company has more than 25 years of experience, as well as 99.98 percent accuracy in tests results. Myriad is a dedicated and committed company with the latest in pioneering research and development of innovative molecular diagnostic tests. Their myRisk Hereditary cancer test is a 28-gene panel that screens not only for the BRCA gene, but includes a variety of other genetic mutations which are associated with breast and ovarian cancers, as well as colon, endometrial, lung, melanoma, pancreatic and prostate cancers, and rheumatoid arthritis. Leta M. Vaughan, DNP, CNM, is a nurse practitioner with WomancarePC, which offers the Myriad myRisk Hereditary cancer test, as well as other screenings. A Naturopathic Doctor’s Approach to

Detoxification by Thor Conner, ND, LMT

D

etoxification is a popular way for people to take an active role in their health. There are many great diets, supplements, treatments and programs that have been developed to guide us through what is a complicated and often misunderstood process. Detoxification is really about balancing the rate at which the body can naturally eliminate toxins with the rate at which they build up, and then encouraging the natural processes of elimination. Start by identifying toxins that are affecting our body and eliminating those which we most easily can. Removing corn syrup beverages and not smoking are two great examples

of things we don’t need at all and are prime examples of things within our control to change. Environmental factors like air, noise and light pollution may be out of our control, but we can make some different personal choices. Antiperspirants, lawn chemicals and cleaning solutions are examples of less toxic options. The second step is to enhance function through the organs of elimination: skin, lungs, kidneys, liver and intestine (gut). We can encourage liver function, waste elimination and balance intestinal flora with food and herbs, or even rest the system with a fast. The kidneys can be supported by

proper hydration from pure water and fresh juices. Skin can be dry-brushed and bathed regularly. Sweating is great for elimination, whether as part of exercise or in a far-infrared sauna. Deep breathing and postural exercises promote healthy lung function while strengthening the diaphragm. Herbs and nutrients can assist healthy organ elimination, and there are a number of products available to help with the detoxification process. But there is no real “detox in a box”, because detox is not just a two-week process; lowering our total toxic burden is a lifelong series of lifestyle choices. What naturopathic doctors do is guide patients with an individualized plan for detoxification, taking into account their body’s current state of health and personal health goals. This can facilitate more effective elimination and continued enhanced function, which truly brings the detoxification process full circle. Not only will we will end up a higher level of health than when we started, but the benefits will continue as we incorporate this progress into the rest of our life. Thor Conner, ND, LMT, is co-owner of of World Tree Natural Medicine, located at 17W 703-F Butterfield Rd., in Oakbrook Terrace. LIVE CANCER-FREE Natural Ways to Prevent and Heal Cancer by Linda Sechrist

V

ictorious warriors against cancer are speaking to other patients about their journeys of recovery and healing. Two who regularly speak to physicians, as well, are Glenn Sabin, author of n of 1: One Man’s Harvarddocumented Remission of Incurable Cancer Using Only Natural Methods, and Kathy Mydlach-Bero, author of EAT: An Unconventional Decade in the Life of a Cancer Patient. Their stories demonstrate the healing effectiveness of healthy lifestyle measures still widely categorized as prevention.

Whole Life Triumphs

Determined to become free of the chronic lymphocytic leukemia that had defined his life for 20 years, Sabin, who lives near Washington, D.C., appointed himself the subject of his own research experiment. He subsequently became a poster child for the remedial synergy of biological individuality, a whole systems approach to integrative oncology and self-induced healing through lifestyle and supplement interventions. Sabin now 30

dedicates his business development firm, FON Consulting, to advancing integrative medicine as the new standard of care. His mission is to open minds to the idea that knowledge, empowerment and self-efficacy are our best allies against a life-limiting diagnosis, and we can do much to help the healing process. Writing to Joe Biden regarding the vice president’s Cancer Moonshot initiative, he candidly describes America’s present cancer-friendly environment. “The public has become conditioned to existing in a broken food chain that remains in disrepair due to misguided farming subsidies [and] untested or otherwise questionable chemicals (many of which are banned in other countries) that are present in the water we drink, the air we breathe, food we consume and products we use. Current therapies or those in the drug pipeline won’t improve the 50/50 odds of developing cancer. What will have the greatest impact are consumer education toward powerful lifestyle changes and access to the building blocks of basic health.”

combat harmful growth of new blood cells, and the benefits of growing and eating foods containing angiogenesisinhibiting compounds that oppose such growth and so work to prevent, improve and avert recurrences of chronic disease. “Cancer hijacks the angiogenesis process triggered by inflammation and keeps it permanently activated to ensure that cancerous cells receive a dedicated, uninterrupted blood supply,” explains Mydlach-Bero. For three years, she largely consumed only items from the list of angiogenesis-inhibiting foods now posted at KathyMydlachBero.com/food-research. These include green tea, strawberries, blackberries, red tart cherries, raspberries, blueberries, apples, grapefruit, lemons, tomatoes, cinnamon, purple potatoes, kale, grape seed oil and pomegranate. In 2008, she completely replaced both the drugs to combat the side effects of chemo and radiation and a long-term medication for preventing recurrence with healthful foods. Her physicians were admittedly uncomfortable with her decision to combine chemotherapy and radiation treatments with “food as medicine”, reiki, prayer, meditation, mindfulness

michaeljung/Shutterstock.com

Mydlach-Bero made her remarkable recovery from rare and unrelated aggressive Stage 4 inflammatory breast cancer and a high-grade tumor in her head and neck. To tell her story, the resident of Delafield, Wisconsin, relied on her 18 journals as a surrogate memory to chronicle a 10-year journey of courageous exploration, self-evolution, self-advocacy and self-transformation that connected her with her healing potential. Then the mother of two young daughters, Mydlach-Bero rejected a 21-month prognosis in 2005, along with the notion that disease and medicine would determine her fate. Defying the odds, she applied what she learned from research regarding Avastin, a pharmaceutical created to

and supplement intervention. But that didn’t deter her. To awaken others to the practicality of food as medicine, she founded NuGenesis Farm, in Pewaukee, a nonprofit modeled after her home practice.

Prevention is Paramount

Pioneering physicians and researchers agree with Sabin and Myldach-Bero that comprehensive prevention, the key to solving the cancer epidemic, is missing from conventional medicine. Leading voices include Dr. Andrew Weil, founder and director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the College of Medicine, University of Arizona (AzCIM), in Tucson; Dr. Carlos M. Garcia, founder of Utopia Wellness, near Tampa, Florida; advocate Susan Silberstein, Ph.D., founder of BeatCancer.org, in Richboro, Pennsylvania; and Ajay Goel, Ph.D., director of the Center for Epigenetics, Cancer Prevention and Cancer Genomics at Baylor University Medical Center’s Research Institute, in Dallas. Weil pioneered the earliest efforts to develop a comprehensive curriculum in evidence-based integrative medicine and the field of integrative oncology. “We’ve known for nearly 15 years that inflammation is the root cause of many chronic diseases. Since 2012 scientific evidence has proven

that a healthy lifestyle and an antiinflammatory diet can influence various cancers,” says Weil. His curriculum for health professionals and the general public was the first to cite the role of a nutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory diet in cancer prevention and treatment. “Health professionals graduate armed with a better understanding of the complex interactions between cancer, gut microbiome and nutrition,” advises Weil, whose paradigm inspires his chain of True Food Kitchen restaurants. It includes lots of fruits and vegetables, small amounts of non-GMO whole or cracked grains, al dente pasta,

healthy fats and plant-based proteins from legumes, nuts and seafood as well as poultry and lean, antibiotic-free grass-fed meats, cheese and eggs. Plus, Weil likes white, green and oolong teas, fresh herbs and spices, up to two glasses of red wine a day (less for women; possibly none for those at high-risk for breast cancer), and dark chocolate for antioxidant polyphenols. Integrative Oncology, authored by Weil and Dr. Donald I. Abrams, an integrative oncologist, is mandatory reading for AzCIM students that learn to use complementary interventions in prevention and conventional cancer care. Subjects such as antioxidants, cannabinoids, energy medicine, mindbody medicine, music and expressive art therapies are covered, as well as naturopathic oncology, plus the roles that community and spirituality play in prevention and treatment. Goel’s 20-year career in cancer prevention research has produced a wealth of related articles. Among his findings, he advises, “Curcumin, a yellow compound extracted from turmeric, has become a gold standard for prevention and the natural treatment of many chronic health conditions, including colon cancer. It targets cancer stem cells, disrupts cancer cell communication, triggers cancer cell death and helps to prevent cancerous mutations to cells. It’s also been shown to improve the efficacy of conventional treatments including fewer adverse effects.” He recommends only taking turmeric products with BCM-95 percent active curcuminoids.

Customized Protocols

Considering each individual’s biological individuality as a Petri dish, Garcia’s studies help achieve an anti-cancer life. He advises, “There is no ‘one size fits all’ medical protocol box for cancer treatment. Customized modifications to life

style and diet are required because food nutrients directly impact the mechanisms by which cancer cells grow and spread. The right nutrition can reverse a compromised immune system, which research shows is a major contributor to the development of cancer.” Whether for improvement or prevention, Garcia’s patient protocols always begin with a comprehensive evaluation appointment to learn about the individual he is treating. For cancer patients, his two-phase, eight-week program involves immune-enhancing therapies followed by immunotherapy aimed to de-cloak the camouflaged protein coating of wily cancer cells so the body’s immune system can identify and destroy them.

Mind/Body Detox

To maintain good health, Judy Seeger, a doctor of naturopathy near Fort Lauderdale, Florida, recommends a regular detoxification regimen to cleanse environmental and product toxins and toxic emotions. Through experience, she has learned that individuals living with cancer need to substantially support their abnormally functioning elimination system to rid it of dead proteins from destroyed cancer cells and chemotherapy drugs that are overtaxing the immune system. “Clearing out toxic, stressful emotions that produce acid, weaken the immune system and create an environment for cancer to propagate is essential,” says Seeger. “Fulfilling the body’s requirement for an ongoing healthy nutritional plan that maintains a healing alkaline environment reduces both the risk of a cancer as well as recurrence.” She has observed that when an individual’s

healing process has stalled despite their doing all the right things to improve their biochemistry, it’s frequently because they haven’t done an emotional detox and lack feeling a spiritual connection to something larger than themselves. Silberstein categorizes cancer as epidemic. She speaks regularly regarding preventing cancer and its recurrence at medical and nursing schools, continuing oncology nursing education programs and universities. “What is needed more than new treatment research is public education regarding the true causes of cancer and continuing education credits in lifestyle training for medical professionals,” she says. Silberstein’s nonprofit organization provides online holistic cancer coach training for health professionals as well as research-based education and counseling on how to prevent, cope with and beat cancer through immune-boosting holistic approaches. The list of books authored by cancer survivors continues to grow, offering helpful insight into how individuals are negotiating the challenges of their healing journey. Two recent books, Surviving the Storm: A Workbook for Telling Your Cancer Story, by Psychotherapist Cheryl Krauter, and Cancer Survivorship Coping Tools: We’ll Get You Through This, by

Barbara Tako, are particularly helpful regarding the onslaught of toxic feelings and emotions that stress the mind and body—fear, anger, isolation, anxiety, depression and uncertainty, as well as loss and grief. Emphasizing the need for individuals diagnosed with cancer to tell their stories, the authors encourage keeping a journal. The act of getting thoughts and experiences out of the mind and onto paper supports emotional cleansing. “It’s important to share the real story of the emotional storm that is cancer, as well as the ravages of its treatments and invisible, but lingering side effects; to tell the tale of the cancer survivor who is moving from patient to person; and to explore and discover who you are after having faced down your mortality,” Krauter counsels.

Changed Paradigm

Results of the Human Genome Project, as well as the work of Bruce Lipton, Ph.D., stem cell biologist and author of The Biology of Belief, and other epigenetic researchers support the point that “environmental signals” that directly affect our DNA expression include our thoughts, emotions, belief system, exposure to sunlight, exercise and everything we put into our body. Such new science shatters the idea that we are victims of our genes and environment. It shines light on the fact that we have tremendous power to shape and direct our own physical health. Our entire lifestyle is pivotal. Linda Sechrist is a senior staff writer for Natural Awakenings. Connect at ItsAllAboutWe.com.

Fresh Looks at Autism Focusing on a Child’s Optimal Potential

chekart /Shutterstock.com

by Linda Sechrist

A

new paradigm shift regarding autism spectrum disorder (ASD) centers on evolving beliefs about the possibilities for those living with autism, as well as the unimagined brilliance they possess and their need for supportive help. Everyone can benefit from the results of hands-on research and experience by parents and caregivers that are finding nontraditional ways to help special needs children deal with issues related to emotional and cognitive detachment and isolation. Momentum for this major shift in perspective is fueled by young adults that are telling their encouraging stories online and in books such as Carly Fleishman’s Carly’s Voice. Parents of the one in 45 children diagnosed with ASD know that their lifetime commitment requires extraordinary courage, perseverance, patience, determination, emotional strength, outside-the-box thinking and unconditional love. These parental characteristics are most cited by those that have mastered related developmental disorders, which they now regard as gifts, because they are thriving. Dr. Andrea Libutti, author of Awakened by Autism: Embracing Autism, Self, and Hope for a New World, offers her insights for understanding the multifac-

34

eted nature of autism and the need for a personalized plan for healing. Janice Vedrode, a special needs coach, consultant and child advocate in Saginaw, Michigan, founded Spectrum Speaks and writes at JaniceVedrode.com/blog to inform parents about numerous issues regarding ASD. “Because I live in a town that didn’t have an existing support group for parents with ASD children, I took it upon myself to get the ball rolling and advise parents that they need to build a dream team—doctors, therapists, special needs teachers, spiritual community, friends and family—that will make sure their child succeeds and lives a happy and successful life,” says Vedrode. Wanting to help both their own two sons with developmental disabilities and others, Boaz and Minerva Santiago, residents of Pembroke Pines, Florida, became early trailblazers ushering in the self-employment movement for special needs individuals. Their Picasso Einstein online educational platform at SelfEmploy.org has launched the #JobCreators Bootcamp Training for parents and professionals and the #JobCreators Integration Program that collaborates with organizations, financial institutions and government agencies.

Chicago www.NAChicago.com

“If you focus on pursuing a business for your child for the sake of their independence, you won’t get caught up in only the business and money aspects. Self-employment allows even greatly impaired individuals the maximum opportunity to experience independence, not just in the present, but for the rest of their lives,” explains Boaz. He cites an example of a young boy with an avid interest in folding clothing. His parents learned how to create a meaningful job for him by creating a simple small laundry business from the family garage. Although at the beginning he was only asked to fold clothing (which he already expressed interest in), his father now accompanies him around the neighborhood to pass out business cards and promote his service. Being in business has helped him grow as a person. “Begin by assuming your child is competent and make it possible for them to follow their passion and create a future they can be proud of,” advises Boaz. Shining lights are leading the way. With her father’s help, Carly Fleishman, diagnosed at the age of 2 with nonverbal severe autism, wrote a book by striking one computer key at a time that described living in a mind and body afflicted with this condition. Still nonverbal, she hosts a YouTube radio show on which she interviews celebrities via a device that turns keystrokes into verbal language. Kerry Magro, with Autism Speaks, a research and advocacy organization, answered the question, “What Happens to Children with Autism When They Become Adults?” in his TEDx talk, one of his many media ventures. Chris Varney, an “I can” advocate for children’s rights, won rave reviews for his TEDx talk, “My Unstoppable Mother Proved the Experts Wrong.” Such powerful stories specifically relate how parents, grandparents and helpful friends forged networks that freed them and their afflicted children

Check It Out: Tinyurl.com/ Chris-Varney-Talk Tinyurl.com/ KerryMagroTalk of the inhibiting stigma of autism and enabled them to realize their fullest potential. A bedrock philosophy in supporting ASD and other special needs children is to assume they are competent and learn to see them through God’s lens, rather than the lens of the world. More than 90, five-hour events that include appetizers and a guided farm tour are being held all the way through November in more than a dozen states (see OutstandingInTheField.com). “Some of our most popular events feature farmers of the sea, and are set alongside the ocean or other bodies of water,” adds Lisa Supple, publicist for the company. “They feature local fisher people and oyster and abalone farmers.” “Epicurean San Diego offers popup farm dinner events at Dickinson Farm, in National City, California,” explains

The Rise of Pop-Up Organic Dining by John D. Ivanko and Lisa Kivirist

he flip side of enjoying farm to table is taking the table to the farm. Socalled “pop-up feasts” are booming at farms throughout the country during growing and harvest seasons. While the format varies, dinners are typically hosted on working rural or urban farms, last about three hours and include aperitifs and a tour before the meal. Wine pairings or beer tastings and live music may be among the enticing activities offered. Gabriele Marewski, owner of Paradise Farms, near Miami, Florida, was a pioneering forerunner of the trend. For 10 years prior to retirement, she hosted more than 50 chefs, served thousands of guests an organic Dinner in Paradise and raised more than $50,000 for area charities. Periodic onsite dinners continue (ParadiseFarms.net). “Many chefs are active in farm-totable dinners on the West Coast. We also see participation among wineries, orchards, cheese makers and breweries,” says A.K. Crump, CEO of TasteTV, in San Francisco, which also supervises PopUpRestaurants.com. “People like to meet the meal maker and know more about the origin of what they eat.” 36

“I started Dinner on the Farm nine years ago to create unique experiences that connect people to the places their food is grown and the people that grow them,” says Monica Walch, whose popup dinners are served picnic-style for friends and families that bring their own tableware. Her company’s Midwest events, usually offered on Minnesota and Wisconsin farms, always feature local chefs, food ingredients and breweries (DinnerOnTheFarm.com). “There’s nothing like being comfortably seated in the field where your food is growing and having the opportunity to enjoy it just hours after it’s been picked. Then, add in one-on-one conversations with your chef, brewer and farmer, as well as like-minded community members,” observes Walch, who grew up on an organic dairy farm in Minnesota. Setting the bar for high-end, white tablecloth, adults-only communal events, Outstanding in the Field tours the country to offer a taste of fresh, local cuisine prepared by top regional chefs. Some pop-up feasts are managed directly by local farmers in partnership with lead chefs. Foraging for a

Wild Taste of Nature

The next Let’s Walk & Learn Foraging event will be held on August 5. Register at TheResiliencyInstitute.net.

by Michelle Hickey

F

oraging is growing in interest and popularity, thanks in part to the growth of microbreweries and “farm to table” and “field to table” restaurants that source local, farm-raised and foraged ingredients like ramps, dandelion greens, violet flowers, mushrooms, fiddlehead ferns and garlic mustard. People desire these new foods, flavors and smells, and want to experience more. This fascination with foraging is really a return to our roots. Our ancestors fed themselves primarily from foraging acorns, greens, root vegetables, mushrooms, nuts, seeds, fruits and berries that grew in abundance in the forests, meadows and prairies and along the waters’ edge. Families had their favorite spots to harvest, and children carried on the tradition. Many people still enjoy growing an annual garden or going apple picking. It’s a reminder of the pleasure of harvesting food and a connection to nature. Fostering this connection with nature is vital in a time when everything is so convenient. Grocery stores are filled with out-of-season foods—asparagus in November, strawberries and tomatoes in January. This convenience comes with a cost—a loss of flavor and nutrition, variety, connection to the seasons and the missed opportunity to harvest and preserve nature’s bounty. Foraging brings this all back. After learning about some common edible wild plants that grow in and around the

38

Chicago area, a whole new world will open up, where food is seen everywhere. There’s so much joy in waiting for fruit to ripen, greens to sprout and nuts to grow. After gorging on mulberries, the cherries will be ready, then raspberries, and so it goes. It’s fun to preserve a bit of every harvest to enjoy in the off season. Wild green pesto in winter is incredible; a fresh flavor burst of greens and garlic that awakens the taste buds with a reminder of the coming spring. The taste of foraged food is special not just because the food is wild or fresh, but because of the journey. Learning the skills to find, identify, harvest and prepare edible wild plants can be challenging, so the Resiliency Institute created Let’s Walk and Learn Foraging experiences for people that want to enjoy a taste of foraging. During these foraging walks, participants learn to identify more than 50 edible wild plants, sample some, and leave with an appetite for more. Many of these plants can be found in lawns and parks, so with some good notes and photos, participants can go home and enjoy a few foraged plants for lunch. Those with larger appetites can enroll in the Resiliency Institute’s Edible Wild Plants Certificate Course to learn to identify, harvest and prepare more than 200 wild edible plants. Instructor and lifelong forager Pat

Chicago www.NAChicago.com

Armstrong will equip students with the knowledge and confidence to become successful foragers through classroom instruction and outdoor plant walks. Every class includes a lunch of foraged foods prepared by Armstrong and the students. Some of the foods eaten this year have been wild greens salads, stinging nettle quiche, lamb’s quarters saag, sautéed ostrich fern fiddleheads, plantain seaweed and purslane cherry salad. Learning to “walk on the wild side” through the Edible Wild Plants Certificate Course is life-enriching. A 2015 graduate, Jean Ruffin, says, “Since taking the [course], I have incorporated several nutritious, wild edible plants into my diet and have been able to spark an interest in edible plant identification in my grandson. Now when we go on vacation or take a walk in the woods, we recognize and appreciate the worth of plants we used to just walk by. And where allowable, we harvest and enjoy them!” Take some time this summer to forage and reconnect with nature. August is time to harvest staghorn sumac flower heads (Rhus typhina), foxtail seeds (Setaria faberi), wild plums (Prunus americana), wild blackberries (Rubus allegheniensis) and chokeberries (Aronia arbutifolia). In September, look for pears (Pyrus communis), acorns, highbush cranberries (Viburunum trilobum), wild grapes (Vitis riparia) and wild rice (Zizania aquatica). The nonprofit The Resiliency Institute is located at 10S404 Knoch Knolls Rd., in Naperville. For more information, visit TheResiliencyInstitute.net. See ad on NAChicago.com.

Good Food Purchasing Policy

T

he Chicago Public School Board has voted to adopt the Good Food Purchasing Program, which will mean better nutrition for 380,000 students. Chicago Public Schools serves 27 million breakfasts and 43 million lunches each school year, at a cost of $80 million. The policy will shift these procurement dollars toward food that is sustainable, local, humane, fair and healthy. The Good Food Purchasing Program provides a metric-based framework and set of tools that guide institutions to direct their buying power to suppliers that meet benchmarks related to five core values: local economies, environmental sustainability, valued workforce, animal welfare and nutrition. The Good Food Purchasing Program is a leading model across the country, and the first of its kind to support these food system values in equal measure. In California last year, the San Francisco Unified School District and Oakland Unified School Districts formally adopted the program, following the leadership of Los Angeles Unified School District in 2012. Colleen McKinney, associate director of the Center for Good Food Purchasing, states, “Imagine the impact if the largest public institutions in cities across the country took a unified stand for Good Food. We could redirect billions of dollars to suppliers that share our values, create ripple effects throughout the industry and influence the national conversation around what a truly equitable and sustainable food system looks like.” For more information, visit GoodFoodPurchasing.org.

TAKE A HIKE Escape into Nature with a Day Trip by Marlaina Donato

T

o many, hiking means long-distance treks through forests or backpacking remote terrain. “In reality, it’s more about getting out into green areas close to home,” says Wesley Trimble, of the American Hiking Society. “It’s about immersion in nature.” Day hiking can be easily tailored to personal preferences and interests. “Excellent apps and websites list and describe trails in your area or community. We have a database on our site that’s helpful,” says Trimble (AmericanHiking.org). He’s personally high on old rail lines that have been converted to wide, accessible paths (RailsToTrails.us).

A Trail for Everyone Whatever our location, age or fitness level, a hike can provide opportunities for calming solitude or connecting with people we care about. Individuals with disabilities can also get outdoors at accommodating trails such as those at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, in Delaware. There’s always something to be learned in identifying wildlife and plants. “Families can enjoy time walking outdoors together in ways impossible in other settings,” observes Verna Gates, founder of Fresh Air Family, a Birmingham, Alabama, outdoor activities educational foundation. “Nature aids in well-being in many ways.” She points to studies cited at NatureAndForest Therapy.org/the-science.html that reveal how trees emit enzymes into the air that help improve our emotional and physical health. “When I lost a child, the only place I found solace was in nature. Sitting in a patch of wildflowers truly brought me back to living,” recalls Gates. 40

Following a lovely trail, much like inspired cooking, is as intriguing and delightful as we wish it to be. From wildflower paths to wine country trails, the great outdoors invites exploration of woodlands, glens, forests, mountain valleys, coastal areas, bayous, deserts and other terrain. Experienced daytrippers recommend revisiting favorite trails in specific seasons. “I love being in the natural world, be it New Jersey, Florida or Alaska. Every trail offers surprises,” marvels distance hiker Craig Romano (CraigRomano.com). As the author of several day hike guidebooks, he’s seen firsthand how, “Every part of the country offers different perspectives and forms of beauty. The greatest biological diversity in our country is found in the Great Smoky Mountains, where the rhododendrons are breathtaking in spring.” The world’s largest mapped cave system is in Kentucky’s Mammoth Cave National Park. Hiking to observe other subterranean wonders in Indiana or Virginia’s Natural Bridge Caverns is no less exhilarating than walking Alabama’s covered bridge trail or painter Georgia O’Keeffe’s Ghost Ranch country, in New Mexico. The Appalachian Trail, running between Maine and Georgia, attracts thousands of adventurous long-distance trekkers, but such trails also offer sections ideal for day hikes. Geomagnetic points in Arizona’s vortex region or America’s Stonehenge, in New Hampshire, afford unusual destinations. The wonders of California’s Sonoma County include Planet Walk, a scale model path that illustrates our solar system. The Crater of Diamonds State Park, in Arkansas, is the only place in the world where hikers can dig for diamonds and keep what they find, although quartz diamond sites (semiprecious stones less hard than diamonds) can be accessed at other U.S. locales. Coastal walks lead to discovering sea glass and shells. Arboretums in urban areas offer trails flush with local flora.

Joining or starting a hiking club based on common interests is one way to go. “One of our guidebook series encourages outdoor enthusiasts to explore the natural world in their immediate backyards. This approach especially appeals to families, first-time trail users and athletes looking for a quick nature fix after work,” offers Helen Cherullo, publisher of Mountaineers Books (MountaineersBooks.org), a nonprofit committed to conservation and sustainable lifestyles. Wherever we venture, take nothing but pictures and leave nature untouched. Cherullo reminds us, “Connecting people to treasured natural landscapes leads to active engagement to preserve these places for future generations. The future of public lands—owned by every American citizen—is literally in our hands.” They deserve our vote.

Recumbent Biking

Author Carrie Jackson can be seen riding her recumbent bike on trails across the Chicago area.

W

ith smoother aerodynamics, improved ergonomics and a sleek presentation, recumbent bikes are quickly gaining a new audience. In the last several years, more people have started turning to recumbent biking for cardiovascular exercise, offroad adventures, an alternative to driving or just to explore the neighborhood. Joe Reichert is the owner of Amlings Cycle in Niles. He says that riders are switching to recumbents for their performance, comfort and style. “For over 40 years, we’ve focused on unparalleled support and service for the entire biking community, which led to a specialization in recumbent bikes and trikes.” Neal Ney has been a member of the Evanston Bicycle Club since 1993, and bought his first recumbent in 1997. The club offers meetings, resources, group rides, camaraderie and a community with a focus on safe recreational riding for adults. Of the more than 600 members, Ney says that only a handful ride recumbents, but that number is slowly growing. “They are more comfortable and make bicycling accessible to people who might otherwise not be able to ride. You can see more stuff. I 42

am almost always the first person on a group ride to spot the hawks.” Dr. Chris Codina is a chiropractor and functional movement specialist at Whole Life Chiropractic, in Hoffman Estates. He works with his clients to restore function, eliminate pain, increase mobility and prevent injuries. “The body was meant to move, and when it doesn’t move properly, things get out of alignment and everything has to work harder to restore balance,” he says. Codina says that the benefits of recumbent biking are myriad. It gets people outside, promotes cardiovascular activity, improves strength and range of motion, increases endorphins and is relatively easy on the body. “Biking in general is a great low-impact alternative to running or even walking, which can be hard on the knee and hip joints. Because you’re not hunched over the handlebars, recumbent biking takes even more pressure off of the wrists, elbows and lower back, and reduces the likelihood of tension and scar tissue in the upper body. It also allows for more free movement and more range of motion in the hips, and is great for people who have hip or back injuries,” says Codina.

Dr. Peter Kozlowski is an Elk Grove Village-based functional medicine doctor who says that riding a recumbent bike can increase many aspects of overall health and wellness, as well as ward off dementia and other degenerative conditions. “We use a functional matrix to address healing. At the core is mental, emotional and spiritual health, and at the base is sleep and relaxation, exercise and movement, nutrition, stress and relationships. Studies show that aerobic exercise can literally improve memory and brain function, increase the size of the hippocampus, and decrease your risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Recumbent bikes and trikes are a great option for people who can’t tolerate a regular bicycle,” he says. Besides the physical benefits, recumbent biking is just cool. “You may as well be driving a Ferrari for all the attention you receive. Motorists, pedestrians and other cyclists do double-takes as they watch you breeze by, seemingly without effort,” says Reichert. “There aren’t many things that a 70-year-old man can do that teenagers think is cool, but riding a recumbent bike is one of them. People smile and stare when you ride by,” adds Ney. Being lower to the ground does offer pros and cons. Riders are more able to put both feet down, making stability more efficient. “A lower center of gravity enhances cornering and handling, and recumbents tend to stop faster and more smoothly,” says Reichert. At the same time, the lack of height does pose a risk that motorists won’t be able to see the bikes. Flags and reflectors attached to the back of the bike help with visibility, and many riders find that the notoriety of the bikes makes them more discernable, as well. “Since you’re looking forward and not down, you have more opportunities for eye contact with motorists,” says Ney. Whether it’s for fitness, function or just fun, recumbent bikes and trikes can be safe and effective for people of all ages and activity level. Many people find a restored level of activity and enjoyment with them. “When I made the move to a recumbent bike, it was primarily because of neck problems, but I’ve found the bike more comfortable for my back, wrists and shoulders, as well. I fell in love with bicycling in the 1980s, but with age, I

penlands, one of the nation’s oldest and most successful metropolitan conservation organizations, has launched a free online paddling guide for the water trails of northeastern Illinois (PaddleIllinoisWaterTrails.org) that provides detailed information on more than 500 miles of water trails for nonmotorized boating on 10 of the region’s waterways and promotes paddling as an inclusive activity for local tourism and outdoor recreation. President and CEO Jerry Adelmann states, “For more than 50 years, Openlands has partnered with many organizations to ensure our waterways are clean, safe and accessible to the public. Friends of the Chicago River was founded as a project of Openlands. We facilitate annual river cleanups around the region and host regular paddling events to foster greater appreciation for nature, from the Calumet to the Kishwaukee.” Associate Greenways Director Laura Barghusen notes, “This resource makes the region’s waterways more accessible to everyone; even individuals new to paddling who might not own their own equipment. This builds upon our work and the work of our partners

to explore some of the most diverse habitats in Illinois.” There are separate guides for the Calumet area, Chicago River, Des Plaines, DuPage River, Fox River, Kankakee River, Kishwaukee River, Lake Michigan, Nippersink Creek and Salt Creek. They contain detailed, step-bystep descriptions for more than 50 trips throughout the region, with information on skill levels, trail length, directions and equipment rental locations. Interactive maps are available for each waterway, indicating launch sites, dams and paddling difficulty along the trail. Paddlers are also encouraged to help keep the site up-todate by reporting log jams, unexpected water traffic, wildlife sightings and other significant observations via the comments for each trail. Openlands developed the Northeastern Illinois Regional Water Trail Plan in 1999 in partnership with Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission, Illinois Paddling Council, Illinois Department of Natural Resources and multiple local government agencies. The Grand Victoria Foundation provided essential support for the implementation of the Plan.

had gotten the point that I had to ice my neck after every ride. The exciting thing about switching to a recumbent was that I felt like I was back on a high-performance machine. I am riding more miles now than I did 30 years ago,” says Ney. “People find they’re cycling longer and father than before, and arriving at their destination refreshed.” “Once you’ve experienced a recumbent, it’s difficult to ever go back to a conventional bike,” adds Reichert.

eeing lost, injured or orphaned animals is heartbreaking, but unless a wild animal is in immediate danger from prey or traffic, it’s best to wait and observe. Mothers forage for food and return to the babies intermittently. If in doubt, call a wildlife rehabber for advice. “Rehabilitators are trained, tested, licensed, take continuing education courses and file annual reports. All care provided must meet government standards,” explains wildlife rehabilitator Regina Whitman, of Queen Creek, Arizona, via her Desert Cry Wildlife website. She rehabs rabbits, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, baby javelina and coyote pups. The Dan & Dianne May Wildlife Rehabilitation Center at Lee’s-McRae College, in Banner Elk, North Carolina, is the only college program in the U.S. that allows students to work hands-on with veterinarians in the rehab center. “We see native species of reptiles, raptors, songbirds and mammals like eastern gray

squirrels,” says Jenna Glaski, a program senior mentor. “When fawns and bobcats are orphaned, it’s usually because the mother has been hit by a car or shot.” In the Georgetown area, South Carolina Coastal Animal Rescue and Educational Sanctuary (SC-CARES) rehabbers care for injured wildlife and other animals. Miss Belle—a doe that was trapped in fencing and temporarily paralyzed trying to get free—received physical therapy and is expected to make a full recovery. Founded in 2004 by Kevin Barton and Linda Schrader, the Wildlife Center of Venice, serves Sarasota and Charlotte counties. Its five acres offers hutches, barns, habitats for squirrels and raccoons, an aviary and a pond for waterfowl. In 2015, volunteers rescued eight striped skunks. Because these mammals are slow and have poor eyesight, wide roads are especially hazardous as they move through diminishing habitat. Skunks eat insects, grubs, rodents, moles and snakes.

Paul and Gloria Halesworth specialize in hummingbirds at Wild Wing Rehab Hummers & Songbirds, in Ahwatukee, Arizona. “Hummingbird babies require a special formula we import from Europe. A body temperature of 105 degrees causes casual rescuers to think they’re overheated. They pant like dogs if too hot; otherwise, they’re okay,” Paul says. If a nest is found on the ground, reaffix it in a tree. “Duct tape works,” he notes. “Mom will find them.” Released birds are taken to the Desert Botanical Garden, in Phoenix. Rehabbing owls costs significantly more, up to $800 from hatchling to release. The Halesworths refer owls to another rehabber that annually cares for about 500 owls. In Fort Gratiot, Michigan, Back 2 the Wild Rehab rescues all kinds of wild animals. In February, two geese were stuck in a frozen river. Firefighters freed the birds and rehabbers checked them for frostbite. One goose died, but the other was released after the next storm passed through. The Snowdon Wildlife Sanctuary, near McCall, Idaho, accepts orphaned bear cubs. Tapping into three decades of research reported by program supervisor Jeff Rohlman, they are vetted and put into a two-acre enclosure to learn to live in the wild until they are old enough for release. Most arrive undernourished and dehydrated; if separated from their mother, they don’t know how to feed themselves or when to hibernate. Dreamcatcher Wild Horse & Burro Sanctuary, in Ravendale, California, doesn’t release rehabbed guests—it provides a lifetime home to roam 1,000 acres in family packs to find their own food and water. Public lands are leased to ranchers for grazing, compelling competition for food between livestock and wild animals, so this is a safer option; the sanctuary also advocates protection of resident mountain lions, badgers, coyotes, hawks and eagles. Barry and Maureen Genzlinger, founders of the Vermont Bat Center, in Milton, have rescued and released more than 125 bats since Barry became a licensed bat rehabilitator for the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department in 2013. “We have one bat that lost 95 percent of the skin on a wing,” he says. “After three months, most of it has grown back. In two more months, it should be fine, just in time to hibernate.” Bats can eat up to 1,000 mosquitoes in an hour. While some are considered a nuisance, each rescued animal has a place in the overall eco-system. Following the good Samaritan rule allows casual rescuers to keep an animal only long enough to safely transport it to a rehabilitator. Rescue operations always need volunteers to donate time or money to help the cause. For creatures, staying with a healing friend can help but there’s no place like home. ecoalertecoalertecoalertecoalerteco Protecting the Great Lakes from a Catastrophic Oil Spill he case against Line 5, the dual 64-year-old petroleum pipelines running under Michigan’s Straits of Mackinac, has deepened. The question now is whether government officials will do anything about it and end the risk of a catastrophic oil spill affecting a large area of the Great Lakes. A report that surfaced in June revealed that Enbridge, the pipeline owner and operator, has for years routinely violated a legal agreement to properly anchor Line 5 against the swift currents in the Straits. The company tolerated lengthy unsupported spans in violation of the 1953 easement agreement through which the state of Michigan granted Enbridge conditional occupancy of the lakebed.

T “Enbridge’s willful neglect to properly support Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac is a game changer,” says Liz Kirkwood, executive director of FLOW, a Traverse City-based Great Lakes water law and policy center. She said the state now must apply the law, stop Line 5’s oil flow and hold public hearings as it considers the Canadian company’s application to continue to use the decaying steel infrastructure. Ed Timm, Ph.D., an engineer advising FLOW, notes it is likely that damage to the pipe has already occurred because unsupported spans were not detected and repaired in a timely way by Enbridge. A University of Michigan study found that more than 700 miles of shoreline in Lakes Michigan and Huron and on their islands are potentially vulnerable to damage from an oil release in the Straits. On June 29, the state’s Pipeline Safety Advisory Board released an analysis of alternatives to Line 5 that fails to examine existing pipeline infrastructure and that is biased toward allowing Line 5 to continue to operate through new oil pipelines and further expand its operations says Kirkwood. Enbridge was responsible for the nation’s largest-ever inland oil spill in Michigan’s Kalamazoo River watershed in 2010. There have been at least 29 spills from Line 5 releasing more than 1 million gallons of oil and gas into the environment. Public comments on the study of alternatives to the pipeline can be made at MIPetroleumPipelines.com/document/alternatives-analysis-straits-pipeline by Aug. 4. rees do more than beautify our landscape. These hardworking plants help reduce heat islands, clean our air and water, benefit vulnerable populations, impact real estate value and improve the health of a community. But not all trees are the same; what we grow and where we grow it matters. The Chicago Region Trees Initiative (CRTI), a coalition of leading Chicago area environmental organizations led by the Morton Arboretum, recently launched a resource at ChicagoRTI.org to help communities around the Chicago area better understand its tree canopy to improve quality of life. The data reveals that of the 157 million trees in the seven-county Chicago region, 60 percent are comprised of fewer than 10 species, which puts the tree canopy at risk should pests or disease appear. Additionally, nearly one-third of those are invasive species, including the European buckthorn, the most abundant tree in the Chicago region. This resource, compiled by overlaying various data sets that include census information, median income, minority populations, temperature mapping, health data and air quality, plus aerial imagery, was designed to help more than 284 Chicago region municipalities plan for the future by creating a healthier tree canopy across the region. “We saw that there was a gap in knowledge and resources, which makes it especially challenging to persuade cities to focus on trees,” says Lydia Scott, of The Morton Arboretum, and director of CRTI. “With this new resource, CRTI is better equipped to help cities understand the critical function of trees in improving environmental conditions, economic development and overall quality of life.” The data shows that the greatest opportunity for increasing the area’s overall canopy exists on residential land, followed by transit corridors. “Now that we have an inventory of our region’s tree species, our cities can think more critically about what tree species to plant so that we do not experience catastrophic losses in the future,” says Scott. Urban Planning Goes Green

Bikes.org rates areas for bike friendliness and taps ideas aimed to increase biking networks. To date, they cover Austin, Texas; Baltimore; Fort Collins, Colorado; Los Angeles; Memphis, Tennessee; New Orleans; New York City; Providence, Rhode Island; Portland, Oregon; and Tucson. The nonprofit Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia (sbnPhiladelphia.org), encompassing 400 businesses and organizations, is pioneer-

ing a Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) retrofit program. The city water department is collaborating on Green City Clean Water’s plan to meet U.S. Environmental Protection Agency clean water regulations and foster rain gardens, green roofs and porous pavements. “We help engineer nature back into cities,” says Anna Shipp, interim executive director and GSI manager. “Socially responsible, replicable and environmentally conscious initiatives and policies catalyze local economies and benefit water, air, aesthetics and people’s emotions.”

Early American developers of Washington, D.C., and Savannah, Georgia, strived to recreate the plans of European cities that offered plenty of public squares and parks. Subsequent high-rise apartments in most other U.S. cities that followed lacked certain elements of neighborhood cohesion, as documented in Zane Miller’s book The Urbanization of Modern America. In Boston, Baltimore, New York City and elsewhere, waterfront revitalizations launched in the 1980s helped improve conditions, making use of nature-oriented ideas that are still trending upward. Urban Hub describes how regions like Silicon Valley, in California, and Boston’s Route 128 corridor continue to enjoy mutually beneficial relationships with Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University. The concept promotes pedestrianization programs and incentives that increase bike-friendliness, multimodal public transportation such as people-mover sidewalks and car sharing, plus off-hour, no-driving and park-and-ride policies. Join the social media conversation at Urban-Hub.com. The U.S. Department of Transportation recently released updated standards on how state agencies should measure mass transit, biking and walking volumes (EverybodyWalk.org). States will assess impacts on carbon emissions by tracking walkers, bikers and transit users instead of just comparing rush-hour travel times to freeflowing traffic conditions, which favors highway spending alone. Dogs at Work Finding the Right Dog for the Job by Sandra Murphy

E

very dog needs a meaningful job. Like us, some need help figuring out what they want to be when they grow up; others choose their own specialty. With imagination and experimentation, even a problem pooch can became an unexpected blessing.

Comforting Companions A 7-year-old hound and canine-style Houdini named Gumby was adopted seven times, surrendered to the shelter eight times and thrice became a stray. An unprecedented 11 return trips to the Charleston Animal Society, in South Carolina, convinced the staff he prefers shelter life. Now his selfappointed job is comforting and helping new arrivals adjust to their temporary home. Dentist April Patterson owns Dr. Patty’s Dental Boutique and Spa, in Fort Lauderdale. After attending a local Humane Society fashion show, she returned to her office with Oliver, a four-pound Pomeranian mix of undetermined age. This cutie’s job is to steady nervous patients. “It wasn’t planned,” says Patterson. “Oliver will bark nonstop when left alone, but being one of the staff makes him happy. Meeting Oliver is part of our hiring process.” Dory, a yellow Labrador certified therapy dog, is approved by the San Diego district attorney’s office to offer aid in court when a victim or witness testifies in front of the defendant. “Dory was the first court support dog in California and the city’s first of five dog and handler teams,” says Kathleen Lam, a retired attorney and dog handler. “The dogs 48

undergo rigorous testing to demonstrate good behavior in court. Handlers work on long downs and stays, including hand signals.” Dory recently accompanied an 8-year-old girl testifying against her father; he had killed his wife in front of her two years before.

Public Ambassadors Deemed “too large to sell,” Bert, a chocolate Pomeranian, wound up in an Oklahoma shelter. Kathy Grayson, owner of The Hole, a New York City art gallery, saw his photo on Petfinder.com and fell in love. She immediately traveled to adopt him. Bert, whom she characterizes as quiet, refined and perfectly suited to the art world, loves being at the gallery and has attended art fairs in major U.S. cities. Follow Bert’s adventures via Instagram.com/bertiebertthepom. “Edie, a boxer mix puppy, started training as an assistance dog, but her personality proved better suited to the hospitality industry,” says Julie Abramovic Kunes, public relations manager for the Fairmont Hotel, in Berkeley, California. Kunes’ Edie was hired by the Fairmont Pittsburgh Hotel in 2011, before making the career move west with her in 2017. A former shelter dog, Edie greets visitors as a community ambassador.

Special Rescue Teams Mas, a water-loving Newfoundland, redefines “rescue dog”. The Scuola Italiana Cani Salvataggio, or Italian School of Rescue Dogs, is the largest national organization in Italy to train dogs and handlers for water rescue. Helicopters can often reach a swimmer in distress more quickly than a boat. The dog jumps out to circle the victim until they can grab her Dory, the first court support harness before swimming to dog in California. shore or a human partner. Mas, the first certified water rescue operative recognized by Italy, France and Switzerland port authorities and coast guards, went on to train her successors. Bloodhounds are renowned for their super sniffers. Lou, a nine-year K9 veteran, on Pennsylvania’s West York Borough Police Department force, ultimately applied for retirement, passing the harness to Prince, a 3-month-old bloodhound. Prince was sworn in by District Judge Jennifer J.P. Clancy in her Spring Garden Township courtroom. The ceremony emphasizes a K9’s status in the community and within law enforcement. Paired with Officer Scott Musselman for eight months of training, the duo will work with the Missing Child Task Force. ‘‘

SHIATSU THERAPIST

A year ago, I was diagnosed with Lyme Disease; though frightening, it was somewhat of a relief to finally know what was happening with my body. Eighteen years prior, I discovered a tick on the top of my head and soon after, my health changed. Migraines, aches and pains, weight gain, early onset menopause, rashes, thyroid issues—the list goes on. A genetic test concluded a resistance to detoxifying mold and lyme disease, and these results forced me to make some big life changes. I left my job on a full time basis to work from home, and in order to fully function, my body required energy work weekly.

‘‘

My daughter highly recommended Shiatsu and I was open-minded after a bit of research. WOW! With the myriad types of bodywork I receive, nothing has the effect as my experience with Polly. I am a new person—on the inside and outside. I can honestly feel myself healing. I am forever grateful and have met a new friend for life. – Laura Kimmel
