Are You Ready for the Cold and Flu Season? Cold and flu season always brings irritated, red, puffy gums along with it. For most people, the protection of the mouth becomes secondary as the immune system is more focused on protecting the rest of the body. There are some great ways to prevent or repair gum inflammation when you are sick and help boost your immune system every day. The inflammation you see in your mouth is accompanied by a host of bacteria that are circulated into the bloodstream every time you brush, floss or eat. Here are some simple, yet very effective ways to stop the oral bacteria dead in their tracks, start healing the gums and fortify the body against the cold. Baking soda is a great way to balance the pH (bacteria hate balanced pH) and reduce inflammation while reducing the bacteria. You can also use essential oils (one to two drops) on your wet toothbrush. The best varieties are peppermint oil, lemongrass oil, cinnamon bark oil, lavender oil and clove oil. Tea tree oil is good when you are not sure if the problem is viral, bacterial or fungal, but just use one drop at the most. Soak your toothbrush in hydrogen peroxide or tea tree oil, or run it through the dishwasher while sick and throw it away when you are better. hinking back on thoughts to share as I prepared this seasonal letter, my thoughts turned to holiday treats. To this day, my dad holds a special place in his heart and tummy for homemade cookies, pastries and just about any treat containing walnuts and pecans. And some of my favorite holiday memories include his enjoyment of Christmas cookies, my homemade kolácky and a good annual fruitcake. My dad loves fruitcake—not the kind, mind you, with concrete dough, bitter citron and an off taste, or some rum-soaked concoction that can break your foot. Rather, he favors a fruit-andnut-filled cake, with simple dough and a fruity aroma. When I was quite young, my grandpa discovered that the best cake to be had came from A&P, a now-defunct grocery chain. I can still taste the sweet dough, candied pineapple and humongous cherries. Each year as we unwrapped the gifts, my dad would eagerly await the square box he knew was in his pile from Santa. Cutting the cake became a ritual all its own. Fruitcake needs to be slightly chilled to ensure even slices that don’t crumble. To make the cake last into January, it had to be sliced thinly. Our unheated attic steps became the perfect refrigerator. To prep for that first bite, my dad would sharpen his special fruitcake knife and then get out the round metal tin with the embossed gold lid (back from the good old days, when stuff came in real boxes, he’d comment). I can still picture him, standing at the vast, enameled, sink apron: ceremonially opening the square cardboard box, slicing the plastic wrap, lifting out the round cake and placing it into the tin. Then a dip of the knife under running cold water, two quick slices, and a small portion of the cake would be ready to slice on a plate. The rest of the cake was quickly shut into the tin and whisked away to the attic steps for another day. A few thin cuts later, and we’d be enjoying the first savory bites. Through the wonders of Google, I have located the same Jane Parker-brand cake, now available online in small quantities, and have ordered one for my dad. I’m hoping the memories still match their recipe. In this time of December merry-making and seasonal reflection, we’d like to thank you, dear readers, for your support and encouragement. We wish you every peace and joy. If this is a time of sadness or loss or discomfort, we offer you love and consolation. We’d like to honor and recognize our advertisers whose support are what keeps us in business. Please be sure to thank them by shopping their products and services this holiday season, and by enjoying their special offers in our annual Holiday Gift Guide in this issue of Natural Awakenings. We’d also like to thank our entire Natural Awakenings team for their tireless efforts, talents and love, and who make this magazine happen every month. And hats off to the amazing delivery drivers and the hundreds of distribution locations that generously place our magazine for you to pick up and enjoy. Wishing you holiday cheer and a beautiful new year!

Grand Opening for Glencoe Microcurrent Facial and Body Studio

B

eautiful Image Co. Facial & Body Sculpting has opened in Lakefront Chiropractic, located at 630 Vernon Avenue, Suite F, in Glencoe. A grand opening celebration is scheduled from 7 to 8:30 p.m., December 3, with additional demonstration and healing nights throughout the month. Beautiful Image Facial & Body Sculpting Claralethia Teal offers an exceptionally effective, all-natural, non-surgical, “youthing” cosmetic treatment for men and women alike. This relaxing, soothing treatment employs gentle microcurrent magic wands to deliver results that can far exceed other cosmetic surgeries and invasive alternatives without negative side effects, disfiguring mishaps, downtime and the high price tag. Claralethia Teal, Beautiful Image Co.’s Founder and a certified wellness consultant and holistic health coach, discovered Beautiful Image Facial & Body Sculpting after pregnancy, enlisting it to revitalize and transform her new mommy tummy. Teal says, “The epiphany of the finished product—the miracle of a renewed tummy—nearly matches the miracle of creation, of pregnancy and of new life itself.” Facial and body sculpting synergistically tightens, smoothes and tones tissues, multiplying collagen, elastin and ATP, increasing circulation, strengthening muscles, releasing endorphins and rejuvenating the skin and body at a cellular level while quelling emotional stress and physical aches, too. As a special gift, all that purchase a gift certificate before New Year’s Day will receive a free organic holiday gift basket if they include code NA201415OGlow. The free diabetic guide explains in plain English how many diabetics have been able to reduce and eliminate their drugs and insulin infections, lose weight without exercise, reduce and eliminate the risk for diabetic complications, restore pancreatic function, and even become non-diabetic. newsbriefs Amour de la Terre Provides the Finest in Ethical Gifting

A

mour de la Terre opened in August as Chicago’s—and the nation’s—first all-vegan/ eco-friendly/ethically produced boutique for shoes and accessories. Owner Alisha Kettner says, “Our boutique was built using bamboo for flooring and shelving. Our shopping bags are made from 100 percent recycled materials and our gift cards are made of birch wood from sustainable forests, with no PVC plastic.” An animal lover, self-proclaimed “eco-nerd” and vegan, Kettner discovered there were no options for cruelty-free and environmentally friendly shoes in Chicago, but that great suppliers do exist. All of the products at Amour de la Terre are from companies that produce ethically, with no child labor or sweatshop labor. The shop carries stylish and comfortable shoes for women, men and children. “We have some brands that no one else in the country carries,” says Kettner. Swedish Stockings is the world’s only eco-stocking/pantyhose/tights company that exists, and we are the first in the U.S. to carry them.” Accessories such as belts, purses and hats include eco-friendly Vaute Couture. They also carry Scotch brand nail polish that is vegan, toxin-free and biodegradable, and Hurraw lip balms that use all organic, raw ingredients. Location: 130 N. Oak Park Ave., Oak Park. Vitamin D Testing Now Available at InOut Labs

I

nOut Labs is now offering vitamin D testing that can be done without a doctor visit. Owner Tim Thoelecke Jr. says, “You can get vitamin D from the sun, but in a northern climate, you would need to spend a lot of time outside in the middle of the day with no sunscreen and lots of skin exposed. Darker skin needs more time than lighter skin. Very few get this kind of sun exposure, so we take supplements.” Vitamin D affects many of the body’s critical functions and studies suggest at least 64 percent of Americans are deficient, which can contribute to Type 2 diabetes, infection, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disease, neurological disease, low testosterone and even cancer. However, too much Vitamin D can be toxic, so supplementation should be monitored. InOut Labs offers more than 700 types of tests, including background checks and employment drug, DNA paternity, STD and HIV, alcohol and wellness tests.

Farmers’ Markets Now Supported Thriving in an Age of Turmoil, in Chicago Food Deserts Change Loss and Grief

T

he U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is awarding the city of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) $88,908 in competitive grant funds to support Chicago farmers’ markets. The Farmers’ Market Promotion Program grant will support the Pullman Farmers’ Market at Arcadia Park, 11132 South St. Lawrence Avenue; Austin Farmers’ Market at Austin Town Hall Park, 5610 West Lake Street; and Englewood Farmers’ Market at Anchor House, 1230 West 76th Street. The USDA Farmers’ Market Promotion Program makes annual investments in marketing and promotion activities for farmers’ markets, community supported agriculture (CSA) programs and other direct producer-to-consumer outlets for local food. These investments represent USDA’s commitment to strengthen organic and local and regional food systems through projects that recruit and train farmers, expand economic opportunities and increase access to healthy food. All three markets are existing sites located in low-income/low-access census tract areas as defined by the USDA. This award will be used to increase availability and consumption of healthy, regionally sourced agricultural products and cultivate attendance at each market through marketing and programming. “This investment will benefit local agriculture and improve access to healthy foods,” says Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “Beyond supporting farmers’ markets in food deserts, this also serves as an investment in neighborhood gathering places and community development.” For more information, call 312-744-3316 or visit ChicagoFarmersMarkets.us.

Nutritional Supplements Aid Regularity

C

onstipation, a common health concern, may cause more than just discomfort. Chronic constipation can lead to problems with the epithelial lining of the intestines that secrete and absorb nutrients, and even to colon cancer, according to a 2012 study conducted by the American College of Gastroenterology. Passing overly dense fecal waste can also aggravate hemorrhoids. According to Steven Frank, founder of Nature’s Rite, an herbal remedies company, two key nutrients can contribute to a solution. For most people, ingesting 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C per day through food sources and/or supplementation is sufficient to soften stools. In addition to oranges and a variety of citrus, good sources of vitamin C include strawberries, chili peppers, red and green bell peppers, kale, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower and broccoli. Still, many need something more to accomplish the goal. Magnesium, critical in supporting muscle movement, as well as heart health, may aid with peristalsis, the involuntary contractions of the intestines and colon that move fecal matter along. Magnesium also helps with the production of lubricating mucus. Magnesium food sources include beans and nuts, fish, avocados, bananas, yogurt, dark leafy greens and dark chocolate. A daily dose of 500 milligrams of magnesium is usually sufficient for good health and regularity. For more information, call 888-465-4404 or visit NaturesRiteRemedies.com. See ad on page 4.

We Don’t Get Enough Vitamin D from Sunshine

N

ew studies show that low vitamin D levels are associated with depression and seasonal affective disorder. This is an especially important health value to have optimized as we come into the winter months. According to research on vitamin D absorption from the sun, Midwesterners only absorb Vitamin D from being outside between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when not wearing sunscreen, from June to August, making correct supplementation even more important. Other symptoms of low vitamin D include gum disease, muscle pain and skin conditions. According to current research, adults should take a minimum of 2,000 IU of vitamin D daily. Cell Phones and Router Microwaves Stress Plants

E

vidence of the effects of wireless technologies on human health continues to be controversial, with agreement on results remaining elusive. Now a new study published in the Journal of Plant Physiology found that humangenerated microwave pollution can potentially be stressful to plants. Researchers from Romania’s Estonian University of Life Sciences tested three common garden plants—parsley, celery and dill weed. They exposed each to the types of microwave radiation equivalent to those produced by cell phones and wireless routers. Then these radiation-exposed plants were compared with identical plants not exposed to the radiation. The scientists noted that the irradiated plants had thinner cell walls; smaller chloroplasts (cellular sites of photosynthesis); smaller cell mitochondria (centers of energy production); and greater emission of volatile compounds, particularly monoterpenes and green leaf volatiles, which are protective, life-promoting components of the plants’ essential oils. The effects were stronger for the type of radiation produced by wireless routers. While essential oil production overall was increased by the frequency of the microwaves produced by cell phones, it was decreased by the frequency emitted by the routers.

Mistletoe Extract Benefits Pancreatic Cancer Patients

“We are not getting the flu shot this year.” Our immune system’s strength is influenced by factors including weather, stress, diet, and insufficient rest, so maintaining strong immune health warrants effective nutritional support at specific times.

A

study published in the European Journal of Cancer revealed that a mistletoe extract may lengthen life for patients with severe pancreatic cancer. German researchers tested 220 patients with advanced stage pancreatic cancer, an aggressive, often fatal disease. The patients were divided into two groups; one was given up to 10 milligrams of Viscum album (European mistletoe) three times a week for up to 12 months. Both groups received supportive care throughout the study period. The average length of survival for those taking the mistletoe extract, 4.8 months, was nearly twice that of the other group, 2.7 months; a survival period typically dates from the original diagnosis. Within a group considered to have a good prognosis, the survival period for those that consumed the extract, averaging 6.6 months, was more than double that of the no-extract group, which averaged 3.2 months.

Your immune system needs effective nutrition to support it in times of increased stress, poor diet, lack of sleep and even changing weather. Keep your immune system healthy with Metagenics® products! Their formulas are backed by solid research, and are available for both daily and acute immune defense.

For acute immune support, rely on Essential Defense, used to promote healthy immune function after sudden changes in weather and change of seasons, and Andrographis Plus for healthy respiratory support, and Nazanol for healthy nasal and sinus function.

communityspotlight Chiropractor Makes

Whole Life Adjustments by Carrie Jackson

W

hen Dr. Eunice Deane sees a new client, she’ll give them more than just a standard questionnaire about health history to fill out. Her chiropractic office in Chicago is a place where people know they will get a comprehensive exam, a specific adjustment and a treatment plan that includes diet and other changes to help their condition. She states, “My ideal client is someone who is ready to invest in themselves and ready, willing and able to commit to healthy lifestyle changes in order to get different results and outcomes in their life.” Deane has experienced firsthand the powerful effects of multifaceted treatments. She had never thought about chiropractic medicine until suffering a traumatic head injury in 1982. After seeing a number of doctors and not making much progress, she was referred to a chiropractor that used applied kinesiology and cranial work to help her headaches and inability to concentrate. In a short period of time, Deane made a full recovery and became extremely interested in the process. “I was in a premed program in college, but got sidetracked,” she says. “This was literally the hit on the head I needed to go back.” Deane immersed herself in learning as much as she could by going to chiropractic school during the week and taking postgraduate classes on the weekends. She now has extensive training in chiropractic neurology, internal medicine, rehabilitation, emotional and energetic techniques, acupuncture and clinical nutrition, and has been practicing for more than 16 years. “My focus is really on treating the whole person,” she says. “Structure, biochemistry and emotion all go together, and are the three parts of the wellness triangle. If

26

Dr. Eunice Deane

one of them isn’t strong, then the others won’t be either.” Deane starts by completing a comprehensive exam and intake on her clients. “I have to find the root of the problem,” she says. “The place that’s painful isn’t always where the issue is.” Chiropractic adjustments are done to stimulate the nervous system. “Nerves move the muscles, and muscles move the bone,” says Deane. “When you release where the nervous system is impinged, you release the nerve, the artery and the vein, allowing for better blood flow for delivery of nutrients and faster removal of waste products.” A biochemical analysis shows how the body is functioning inside. “A lot of people have inflammation, which prevents them from healing properly,” says Deane. “I need to make sure that people have the proper building blocks to repair after an adjustment.” She checks adrenal, potassium, chloride, sodium, and vitamin D levels, does a complete blood count and looks at lipid levels. She also evaluates blood sugar imbalances and autoimmune levels. “Seventy to 80 percent of your immune system is in the digestive tract,” she says. “Leaky gut is the beginning of autoimmune disease, which can be the beginning of cancer.”

Chicago www.NAChicagoNorth.com

Deane might suggest nutritional or lifestyle changes, noting, “Our food today is so full of chemicals, and some people’s bodies don’t tolerate dairy or gluten.” An emotional component complements Deane’s work. “Emotions play a large part in Chinese medicine,” she says. “Energy gets stored in the muscle when an emotion is unresolved. Each emotion has its own meridian. For example, anger, rage and frustration are stored in the shoulders and result in shoulder tension and headaches in the side of the head.” She says this is a big sign that the emotional energy is off. “There has to be a balance in energy,” says Deane. “Too much is just as bad as too little.” She works with her clients to help neutralize their reactions to certain emotional triggers and advises, “If you are able to let go of your emotional associations, then when the same issue comes up again, you won’t have the same reaction.” Deane has also developed techniques for assessing and treating limiting beliefs. “How somebody thinks about their condition is directly related to how they’re going to heal,” she says. “They might not be happy about their autoimmune condition, but if they can say they unconditionally accept it, to be neutral, they are more likely to be able to move forward.” Her clients are most able to heal when they practice forgiveness and unconditional love. Helping people get to a better quality of life is what makes Deane’s job so satisfying. “After my injury, I was scared I could never work again,” she says. “I feel like I got my life back, and I love to be able to do that for other people. I see improvements in their energy, cognition, alignment, mood and overall functioning and well-being. It’s extremely gratifying.” The office of Eunice Deane, DC, is located at 6137 N. No matter your age, where you live or what you own, you have the power to do good, too. What you do can make other people happy and make the world a better place. Here are some ideas to help you figure out how. n A good place to start is to think about what’s important to you. This will help you find a way of giving back that you’ll enjoy and want to do again and again. For example, if you love taking care of animals, offer to walk an elderly person’s dog for them. If you get sad when you think about someone being lonely, visit a neighbor that lives alone

Chicago www.NAChicagoNorth.com

or send a special card to a relative as a way to show your love. n It’s nice to help strangers, but you can also do little things close to home that’ll make life easier and better for your family. You can call your grandma to say hello, help your mom or dad with the dishes or play a favorite game with your little sister or brother. n You can also use your own special talents to help others. If you are a good cook, bake a healthy holiday treat to bring to someone that is feeling sick. You can read out loud a story to a younger child. If you’re strong and have lots of energy, you can help your neighbor take out the trash or do other household chores. n You can have fun and make an even bigger difference by doing good things with others. One way to get your friends excited about joining you is to plan a “Giving Party”. Ask your parents to help you download a free guide (WateringCanPress.com/html/ parents.html) that has fun ideas and activities for creating a holiday-time or birthday party or rainy day get-together.

n Giving to other people is important, but the planet needs us, too. You can practice giving by picking up litter, recycling and even turning off lights when you leave a room. When we pay attention to the environment around us, we can learn how to respond in a giving way. Whether it’s time, love or things, the people around us give to us all the time. Sometimes we don’t stop to think about what people do for us, so we forget to say, “Thank you.” Appreciating what people give us is just as important as giving to others.

2014 LOCAL GUIDE TO

CONSCIOUS

GIVING W

hile opening presents is fun for all ages, giving a well-received gift can be especially gratifying. Whether gifts are handmade or store-bought, the most meaningful ones acknowledge each recipient’s specific needs and interests. Alternative gift fairs that support local or international charities are a good place to start. Homemade gifts add a personal touch and can be as simple as a framed photograph or special potpourri. Also consider the eco-friendliness of a potential gift item—what it’s made of, where it’s made and how it’s packaged. While we’re in the mood, why not spread holiday cheer beyond friends and family to everyone? Pay for the next car at a toll booth, leave a potted plant on a coworker’s desk or run an errand for an elderly neighbor. It’s possible to maintain values of simple living and conscious consumerism throughout the holiday season with a bit of thoughtfulness and inspired creativity. To help givers move through the holiday shopping season with grace and joy, Natural Awakenings presents our annual Holiday Gift Guide, filled with ideas for locally available gifts of wellness and sustainability.

tion, while sacrificing their time, energy and money to allow him to practice and play hockey. But his easygoing demeanor belies a razor-sharp focus and determination that began when he was a young boy in Connecticut who loved watching and playing hockey. Chicago youth player Jesse Easterwood is not unlike Smith. The 11-yearold trains year-round at several area rinks and currently plays goalie for the AAA Chicago Mission PeeWee Minor 03 team. From September to February, he, his family and the team will travel to Detroit, Toronto, Pittsburgh and Miami over the course of nine weekends. Smith chuckles at Easterwood’s non-pro schedule because he knows it all too well— that was his own schedule as a kid.

Healthy Diet

For a professional athlete, proper nutrition and training are a high priority, and Smith says he eats well both during training season and off. “I eat broccoli almost twice a day, steamed; especially the frozen organic ones from Whole

or Ben Smith, a forward with the Chicago Blackhawks, starting young on the ice prepared him for this strenuous physical and mental regimen, including a relentless training and travel schedule. The East Coast native was drafted by the Blackhawks in 2008 after his sophomore year at Boston College. He played four seasons at the college before turning pro with the Rockford IceHogs, the Blackhawks top affiliate, in the fall of 2009. Smith made his NHL debut in

34

October 2010 and has skated in 131 regular season and postseason games as of October 28 with the Blackhawks over the past five seasons. This summer, the Blackhawks signed Smith, a member of its 2013 Stanley Cup Championship team, to a two-year contract extension. Smith has a casual, low-key air when he speaks about his upbringing and what brought him to one of the best hockey teams in the world. He credits his family for keeping him levelheaded and committed to his educa-

Foods,” he says. “Our [Blackhawks] nutritionists have us on a gluten-free diet, so we eat a lot of protein in the form of vegetables and meat.” Smith recently bought a home and likes to cook meals there whenever he has time. As the season progresses, he often finds himself ordering salads or gluten-free meals from some of his favorite restaurants, including Sunda, PF Chang’s and LYFE Kitchen. He also admits that he’s human. He rarely eats pizza, but when he does, he opts for the gluten-free variety. His main cheat meals are frozen yogurt, the marshmallow Dream bars and tortilla chips with guacamole.

Rest and Relaxation

Protein and a balanced diet are important for Smith and his fellow athletes because they’re on the rink or training for about four hours a day, six days a week. But with an 82-game regular season, rest and relaxation are just as important as diet. “When I’m not on the rink, I’ll use that time to meditate, go for long walks or enjoy the lakefront, especially during the summer,” he says.

Strong Mind and Body

Fans may not be aware that Smith comes from a family of professional musicians. His father is a professor of composition, his mother was a concert pianist who now teaches music, and his older brother is an oboist. Smith learned to play guitar and other musical instruments, and while his first love is hockey, education never took a back seat. Smith’s majored in history and minored in economics and philosophy, and his parents associated a strong sense of pride with getting a college education. “Jerry York [his head coach at Boston College] always said to me that I was a student first, and then an

To keep his mind strong, Smith meditates and practices intention. While he does some yoga, his form of meditation is based on being mindful about time and place. Before getting out of bed each morning, Smith says he lies still and quiet, with his eyes closed, visualizing how the day will play out and how he’ll perform on the ice. A common myth is that players just show up at the rink and play, he says. “I’m not sure if fans know how much preparation, including mental preparation, goes into playing one game or an entire season,” he notes. The Easterwood family also knows and appreciates the drill. “Jesse does a lot of stretching,” says his mom, Cheri Easterwood, who can usually be found behind the wheel driving him and his siblings from one rink to another. “Being a goalie means being able to do the splits and getting right back up and sliding into the butterfly position. He does yoga and floor barre with his figure-skating sister in order to be flexible and have a good sense of balance,” she says. “His coach also sends training videos and exercise lists to the team to keep them in shape during the off-season, including goalie-specific exercises.” The one thing that the Easterwoods haven’t quite mastered is getting quality sleep when they’re traveling through different time zones, and Smith also acknowledges this is tough, even for a seasoned athlete. Blackhawks players don’t underplay the importance of being well-rested. “Playing well is as much mental as physical,” he notes. “Letting your mind and body rest helps us stay strong mentally and physically.”

athlete,” he says. “He wanted me to keep my mind strong.” At Boston College, he majored in history and minored in economics and philosophy. A good education wasn’t all his parents wanted for their son; they wanted him to be thoughtful and empathetic to others, as well. “Some of the best advice I received from my parents was to give your best every day and enjoy what you do,” Smith says. “But also to be courteous to everyone, from my coach to the custodian.”

Don’t Forget the Fun

Smith loves being on the rink and playing hard, but knows it’s just as important to have fun with the friends and family, too. Whether it’s taking time to hang out with them on the weekends or enjoying Chicago summers, Smith is taking it all in. Back on the Northwest side, Easterwood continues to train hard year-round. He wants to play for the Michigan State University Spartans hockey team for college and study animals (zoology). His ultimate goal is to play professionally for an NHL team. Pressed, he’ll say he wants to play for the Philadelphia Flyers. Who knows, maybe one day he’ll be matched up against Smith on the ice. Ben Smith feels there is no reason why Easterwood can’t reach his goal if he keeps training and practicing his craft. After all, he’s living his childhood dream of playing professional hockey, too. Enjoying the Holidays Despite a Tragic Loss by Susan E. Sheehan

The Set-Up

The holidays have always been a vulnerable time for many. With cheerful cards piling up in the mailbox and visions of Norman Rockwell masquerading as the norm, few truly believe that their holiday experiences are adequate, let alone celebratory. Let’s begin by reminding ourselves that those photos are one great shot culled from a whole year’s worth, and that Rockwell and his second wife (yes, he was divorced) suffered and were extensively treated for major depression. If holiday celebrations have always been a “set-up”, then this time of year is certainly more so. There may be an empty seat at the table. The absence of the person that put the lights on the menorah, made the gravy or wrapped most artistically is felt keenly. All that gather are both grieving in their own way and are anxious about that grief. Furthermore, people grieve differently, and their anxiety increases the likelihood of careless, if not outright upsetting, behavior. While family members 36

and friends try to appreciate each others’ quirks at times like these, certain behaviors often seem irritating, threatening or inappropriate. During a season when time tends to compress while to-do lists grow, grief can profoundly complicate reality. It is generally accepted that the process of normal grieving lasts at least 13 months. That’s how long it takes to pass through important holidays, anniversaries and other special dates on the calendar. It’s no wonder that people get stuck somewhere between, “Somehow this is going to be fine,” and “Let’s just skip the whole thing.” No one strategy works for everyone, but there are some that will help.

The Strategies

The good news is that there are strategies to find a safe place to celebrate the holidays in-between these two extremes. The first step to creating a sense of peace during the turbulence is to simplify the season. Those in mourning

Chicago www.NAChicagoNorth.com

don’t feel or act like themselves, have less energy and aren’t into the expectations and demands of the season. Formerly cooperative family and friends may be less so this year as they muddle through their own grief. Others might feel overwhelmed by friends and family members that want to help with every aspect of the holidays. It is important to allow extra time for rest and reflection; we need to resist crowding our grief with busyness. The body and soul need time to grieve. The holiday should be part of that process, rather than getting in the way of it. As we approaches this first—or yet another—holiday season without our loved one, we might poll others experiencing this loss for ideas of how to proceed. Or, if it seems overwhelming to coordinate gatherings, we can make some decisions ourself. There are some family traditions that we will want to prioritize. This may also be the year that the 25-pound turkey with all the trimmings set upon a large table might be converted to a buffet, with guests mingling throughout the house. Or, wouldn’t it be a wonderfully fun tribute to Mom’s beloved baking to have all the children roll dough together, uniquely filling their own creations in the first “family bake-off”. If it is just too sad for everyone to gather at Aunt Marge’s place without Uncle Jack, then choose another venue, or perhaps another holiday ritual, to celebrate in that home. As much simplifying and reconfiguring as we do for this holiday, don’t forget the most important part: the people. We must manage our own expectations, knowing that this holiday will be different and draining in ways that may surprise us. And don’t be afraid to include “the elephant” in the celebrations. Laugh about the awful turkey gravy. Admit that it was hard to get the wax off the tablecloth every January. Fuss about how annoying it is to get the lights on a tree alone, or about the arduous decision of who should sit where at dinner. If we cry, so what? There remains an overwhelming desire to have everything go according to plan as dear ones gather over

Tips for More Than Just Surviving the Holidays • Simplify the season • Allow extra time for rest and reflection • Poll others for ideas… or not! • Join a bereavement support group • Hold tightly to some traditions • Enjoy letting other traditions go • Create new traditions • Consider switching venues or timing • Manage expectations of yourself • Be reasonable in your expectations of others • Don’t be afraid to “include” your loved one in this new holiday season

• Be open to good surprises

the holidays. There is also a natural tendency to attribute any messy feelings to the loved one that will not be in their usual place, fulfilling their accustomed role. Why not mitigate the challenges of the season by writing a new script and remembering that uncomfortable feelings were likely part of last year’s holidays, too? With our new strategies in place, we don’t have to “just survive” the holidays. In fact, new ways of celebrating may become a wonderful part of our healing process and legacy of our loved one. Wouldn’t that be the ultimate gift? Susan E. Sheehan, CT, LCSW, ACHP-SW, principal at finishing well consulting, LLC, holds graduate degrees in public administration, systems theory and medical social work. Hospice Care Adds Months for Cancer Patients

R

esearchers from Houston’s MD Anderson Cancer Center determined that hospice care significantly increases survival rates among patients with metastatic (stage IV) melanoma, a difficult-to-treat form of cancer that occurs when melanoma cells have spread through the lymph nodes to other parts of the body. The study’s authors followed 862 metastatic melanoma cancer patients. Of these, 523 patients received one to three days of hospice care, 114 patients received four or more days and 225 people received no hospice care through their survival period. Those that received four or more days had an average survival period, which typically dates from the original diagnosis, of 10.2 months, while those that received none averaged 6.1 months. In addition, the end-of-life hospital costs for those receiving the most hospice visits were nearly half of what was incurred by patients not receiving hospice attention.

Hip Fractures Decrease on Weekends and Holy Days

A

new study published in the Israel Medical Association Journal found that older adults are more likely to have hip fractures in the wintertime, except during weekends and on religious holidays. The study’s authors checked the records of 2,050 patients that were at least 65 years old and had suffered a hip fracture. Analyzing the dates of each fracture revealed that significantly more of them occurred during the wintertime; the injuries corresponded directly with lower temperatures and greater rainfall. Fewer fractures took place on the Sabbath and during weekends in general, as well as on Yom Kippur and other holy days, with the exception of Passover. natural awakenings

HAPPY FEASTING TO ALL

Connect

Tasty Rituals that Deepen the Holiday Spirit by Lane Vail

T

he holiday season is ripe with an array of spiritual, cultural and family rituals. We celebrate, reflect, give gifts and, of course, feast. Fortunately, the media also teems with tips on how to avoid high-calorie holiday goodies, says Dr. Michelle May, author of Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat. For our diet-driven culture to resolve its struggle with food, she says we must learn to honor its intrinsic value. Ritualized eating can help; a recent study published in the journal Psychological Science found that engaging in food rituals evokes mindfulness that enhances the enjoyment of eating.

Pause

Hunger, the body’s fuel gauge, manifests in physical symptoms like a growling stomach or low blood sugar, says May, citing a useful analogy. “You wouldn’t drive around and pull into every gas station you see; you’d check your fuel gauge first. Before filling up with food, pause and check your fuel gauge. Am I actually hungry, or is this desire coming from something else?” May suggests practicing FEASTing: First, focus on physical sensations, thoughts and emotions; perhaps we’re thirsty, rather than hungry, rationalizing that holiday foods are special, or feeling 38

“Food connects us with one another, our heritage and our culture,” says May. Heather Evans, Ph.D., a Queen’s University professor and a holiday culinary history expert in Ontario, Canada, suggests creating a food diary of traditions to reinforce a connection with the past and support a holiday food legacy for the future. Ask grandparents about their childhood culinary memories, peruse family recipe books or discover new dishes that honor everyone’s ethnic heritage. Then create an heirloom holiday cookbook with handwritten recipes arranged alongside favorite photos and stories.

Sync

stressed or lonely. Next, explore why the feelings or thoughts are present, and then accept them without judgment. Strategize ways of satisfying the need and take a small step toward change.

Savor

Complex preparations for a major holiday can provoke anxiety and impatience, and likewise, feelings of longing or disappointment when it’s over. Sarah Ban Breathnach, bestselling author of Simple Abundance and Peace and Plenty, recommends allowing Christmastide to unfold at its own pace and celebrating all of December with a homemade Advent calendar. Craft a tree-shaped tower of tiny boxes or a garland of burlap mini-bags clipped with clothespins. Place an almond covered in organic dark chocolate in each container and use the treat as a daily mini-meditation. “Drop into the present moment, fully

Chicago www.NAChicagoNorth.com

According to pagan philosophy, sharing seasonal food with loved ones during the winter solstice on December 21 symbolizes the shared trust that warmth and sunlight will return. Eating warm foods provides physical comfort and eating seasonally and locally connects us to the Earth, observes May. Sync body and spirit with the season by stewing root vegetables, baking breads, sipping hot cider and tea, and nibbling on nuts and dried fruits. “The repetition of predictable foods is reassuring,” remarks Evans, and it celebrates nature’s transitions.

Play

Stir-Up Sunday is a Victorian amusement filled with fun, mystery and mindfulness, says Ban Breathnach. Some December Sunday, have each family member help stir the batter of a special Christmas cake while stating a personal new year’s intention. Drop a clean coin, bean or trinket into the mix and bake. Serve it with a sprig of holly on Christmas Day, and the person with the piece containing the lucky charm will be rewarded with a prosperous, wholesome and positive new year, according

to tradition. Evans remarks, “This is a wonderful ritual for nurturing the health and spirit of the family.”

Give

Boxing Day offers something far more meaningful to celebrate than postholiday sales. Originating as a tradition that thrived during the 19th century, “December 26 was a chance for landowners and homeowners to give back to household staff and local tradespeople,” says Evans. “It’s a tradition worth reviving to pause, reflect on our own good fortune and contribute to others’ comfort.” Consider serving a meal at a local soup kitchen, collecting items for a food drive or offering a box of healthy culinary treats to community stewards at a fire station, post office or library. On Christmas Day, says Ban Breathnach, “Our kids have the world lying at their feet.” Boxing Day, she says, provides a natural transition to reach out in charity. HEALTHY HOLIDAY TOPPERS

Memory-Making Christmas Cake This nontraditional, healthy Christmas cake is alcohol-, sugar- and gluten-free. It relies on fruit for sweetness, almond meal for moistness and vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and orange essences for a perfect mingling of flavors. Prepare the cake with the whole family as a Stir-Up Sunday ritual, and keep it tightly sealed in the refrigerator until Christmas Day. Serve in small portions at room temperature or warmed in the oven and alongside vanilla bean custard or plain yogurt swirled with orange blossom honey. Yields 20 servings 2½ cups (600 grams) mixed and chopped dried fruit (raisins, prunes, figs, apricots, currants, sultanas and/ or dates) 1 tsp ground cinnamon ¼ tsp nutmeg 1 tsp vanilla bean extract Zest and juice from 1 organic orange 3 Tbsp olive oil 3 organic free-range eggs 2 cups (200 gm) ground almonds (almond flour) ¼ cup (50 gm) walnuts Preheat the oven to 300° F. Line the sides and base of a 7-inch round cake tin with parchment paper. Combine the dried fruit, spices, vanilla, orange zest and juice, olive oil and eggs. 40

Creating a repertoire of delicious wintery foods can help evoke health, mindfulness and delight during the holiday season. Dr. Michelle May advises approaching the entire process of eating, including the menu planning, shopping and food preparation, with a spirit of mindfulness, which adds a deeper dimension of pleasure to the experience. “Cake becomes more than just cake,” she says. “It becomes something the family creates and enjoys together.” Savor these rituals and recipes with loved ones.

steel mixing bowl until combined.

Mix in the almond flour and walnuts, then spoon the batter into the baking tin. Bake for an hour-and-a-half. Insert a skewer or toothpick to see if it comes out moist, but clean; if not, bake for up to 30 minutes more. (Cover the top if necessary to prevent over-browning.) After cooling, remove from the tin and store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one month. Courtesy of Teresa Cutter, author of The 80/20 Diet and founder of TheHealthyChef.com.

Pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan and cook over a gentle heat, stirring with a wooden spoon until it thickens and coats the back of the spoon. Remove from the heat quickly and pour back into the mixing bowl. Whisk well to slightly cool and smooth it out. If any lumps appear, strain the mixture through a sieve. Serve hot or cold. To warm up cold custard, put in a bowl set over a pan of simmering water; stir and heat through gently. NOTE: For an egg-free custard, heat 17 oz almond milk with 2 Tbsp honey or 100 percent maple syrup and 2 tsp vanilla extract until near boiling. Thicken with a slurry made from 2 Tbsp cornflour, arrowroot or kudzu. Finish with a sprinkling of nutmeg. Courtesy of Teresa Cutter, author of The 80/20 Diet and founder of TheHealthyChef.com.

The Perfect Custard Yields 6 servings A velvety-smooth custard, also called crème anglaise, may be used as a foundation of many desserts. It can be flavored with cinnamon, nutmeg, chocolate, citrus, coffee or pistachio. Pour this vanilla bean custard over a warm Christmas cake or serve it straight up as eggnog, adding a touch of brandy and dusting of nutmeg. 2 cups milk of choice (organic, almond, coconut, soy or rice) 2 organic free-range eggs 2 tsp vanilla bean extract 2 Tbsp organic maple syrup or 1 Tbsp honey 1 Tbsp cornflour or kudzu Pinch nutmeg Heat milk in a saucepan with vanilla and honey and bring to near boiling, then remove from heat. Start the new year with a tabula rasa (clean slate) by hosting a New Year’s Eve Good Riddance Tea Party. Gather family and friends over warm ginger tea, spiced apple cider, hot chocolate and festive finger foods. Guests write down on slips of paper any mistakes, disappointments, regrets, hurts or failings they wish to be forgiven or forgotten. One by one, put them into a crackling fireplace or bonfire to symbolize surrendering of the past. “This ties the heart strings in a comforting bow,” comments author Sarah Ban Breathnach. Then, inscribe fresh intentions for the year to come and tuck them away in a special place. “This is the most mystical part, because so many prayers get answered,” Ban Breathnach says. Lastly, toast the new year with optimism and joy.

“Having your pet sleep in the bed with you is a personal choice,” says holistic Veterinarian Patrick Mahaney, of California Pet Acupuncture & Wellness, in West Hollywood. By discouraging this behavior, “Your pet will be less likely to confuse your bed with theirs, and therefore prevent potential territoryrelated problems.” By failing to discourage it, “You not only face the possibility of behavioral problems, you could also face adverse effects to your own sleep and health,” he notes. According to results published in a survey of 300 sleep disorder patients conducted by Dr. John Shepard, then medical director of the Mayo Clinic Sleep Disorders Center, in Rochester, Minnesota, nearly 60 percent of the pet owners in the study slept with their pets inside the bedroom. Twenty-two percent of the patients were likely to have pets sleeping on the bed with them. Plus, 53 percent said their sleep was disrupted to some extent every night. Twenty-one percent and 7 percent of their dogs and cats, respectively, snored. Yet, a British study of 420 UK cat owners conducted by the nonprofit Cats Protection revealed that 44 percent of respondents (including 51 percent of women polled) said they enjoyed a better night’s sleep with a cat in bed with them than with a human companion. Nip Problems in the Bud

To break a pet of a bed-sleeping habit, Mahaney recommends applying persistence, consistency and the following tips: n Establish a separate area or bed for the pet to sleep. A cat or dog bed can be as simple as a clean, soft blanket placed nearby. n Use positive reinforcement techniques. Offer a tiny training treat, “gooddog” clicker noise or praise when the animal is comfortably resting in its own bed, to reinforce this desirable behavior. n Immediately address any territorial aggression when co-sleeping with a pet, such as growling or nipping. First, authoritatively say, “No!” Then put the pet on the floor or into its own bed and give the command to sit and stay. n If problematic behavior persists, seek consultation with a veterinary behavior specialist.

Let Sleeping Dogs Lie

If a family member decides to share a bed with a pet, Mahaney offers the following recommendations: n Let it sleep on top of the covers, instead of under them.

n Give the dog an opportunity to void itself within a reasonable timeframe before going to sleep. A typical healthy dog should not have to get up in the middle of the night to urinate or defecate. n Allow a cat the opportunity to exit the bedroom throughout the night to play, eat, drink and use the litter box. Cats are nocturnal animals and are more likely to be active during lights out. Erik J. Martin regularly contributes to WebVet.com, from which this was adapted.

snoring, more space on the bed and soothing purrs. “The advantages of letting your pet share your bed include companionship, warmth and a sense of security,” advises Mahaney. Among the drawbacks, he notes lack of space for people to sleep, interruption of normal sleep patterns and the pet’s confusion about its expected place to sleep.

Toxin-Free

BEAUTY SALONS Pure Pampering Feels Natural and Safe by Sarah Tarver-Wahlquist

W

hen clients walk into New York City’s Swing Salon, they may be surprised by what they don’t smell—the range of chemicals usually wafting around hair salons. That’s because the owners have decided to use only natural and organic products. While many people may assume that all salon hair and body treatments are regulated and safe, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has no authority to require companies to test cosmetic products for safety, due to loopholes in the Toxic Substances Control Act. So, people are being exposed to dangerous toxins through salon products like nail polish, hair color processors and hair straighteners. Be aware that while labels of overthe-counter body care products are required by law to list ingredients, with the exception of the chemical soup often hidden under the term “fragrance”, the loophole for salon products is large. Jamie Silberberger, with the Women’s Voices for the Earth’s National Healthy Nail & Beauty Salon Alliance, reports, “Products sold for professional use in spas and salons are not required to be labeled with ingredients.” Fortunately, healthy alternatives are available, either by patronizing a green salon or using natural beauty treatments at home.

44

Hair Straighteners One salon treatment—Brazilian Blowout hair straightening—can continue to expose customers and salon workers to toxic fumes even months after application. It’s among the conventional straightening products that contain formaldehyde, a known human carcinogen. “Exposure to formaldehyde doesn’t end with the treatment—the fumes are reactivated every time heat is applied to the hair,” says Jennifer Arce, a San Diego, California, salon worker who became sick after applying a single Brazilian Blowout treatment. “So, when a client who’s had a Brazilian Blowout done elsewhere comes into the salon to get a haircut or color and has her hair blowdried, flat-ironed, curled or processed under the hood dryer, the fumes that come out of her hair make me and several of my coworkers sick all over again.” Solution: Avoid chemical hairstraightening treatments. Sign on to the Women’s Voice for the Earth letter campaign petitioning the FDA to remove Brazilian Blowout from U.S. shelves by visiting Tinyurl.com/ BanBrazilianBlowout.

Hair Dyes and Extensions About two-thirds of conventional hair dyes in the U.S. contain para-phenyl-

enediamine (PPD), a chemical banned for use in such products in Germany, France and Sweden. Exposure to PPD can cause allergic reactions ranging from skin irritation to death by anaphylactic shock, which happened to a teenager in 2010. When Spain’s University of Santiago de Compostela researchers conducted a metastudy examining the risk of cancer among hairdressers and related workers, all reported that employees had a higher risk of cancer than the general population. Hair extensions also warrant attention. Many adhesives used on extensions may contain 1,4 dioxane, listed as a probable carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and styrene, a neurotoxin and suspected endocrine disruptor. Solution: Look for a clean, green salon that uses natural hair color treatments free from synthetic chemicals, ammonia or PPD. Individuals can also order nontoxic organic color kits direct from EcoColors.net.

Nail Polish When getting a manicure or pedicure, beware of the toxic trio of dibutyl phthalate, formaldehyde and toluene. Used to help nail products hold color, they’re linked to reproductive and development problems, plus dizziness and eye and lung irritation, according to the Environmental Working Group. Facing pressure from consumer groups and salon workers, some polish companies are now producing so-called “nontoxic” nail polish, although their labels aren’t verifiable. California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control recently tested 25 nail polishes sold to salons, 12 of which claimed to be toluene-free, including seven said to be free of the toxic trio. The researchers found toluene in

10 of those, and one or more of the three ingredients in five out of the seven. Solution: Customers should bring their own safe nail polish and only patronize well-ventilated salons.

Find a Green Salon Many conventional body products like shampoos and massage oils contain a litany of ingredients that add to our chemical exposure. Ask questions to ensure all of a salon’s products are nontoxic or as low in toxicity as possible. For example, a large network of independently owned “concept salons” across America are connected with the Aveda Corporation (Aveda.com), a national leader in developing hair and body products that are free from the most dangerous ingredients. More than 90 percent of Aveda’s essential oils and 89 percent of its raw herbal ingredients are certified organic. Also look for members of the Green Spa Network, a nationwide coalition of spas that pledge to be energy efficient and sustainable in all of their practices (GreenSpaNetwork.org). If a green salon hasn’t yet arrived locally, bring nontoxic products for appointments and ask the stylist to use them. Visit the Skin Deep Database at ewg.org/skindeep to find the least-toxic products for at-home use.

Green Remodeling Offers Many Perks for Homeowners

Energy-Saving Fixtures

by Kevin Jotkus

Many people have a clear vision of what they want for a remodeled master bathroom/closet space—perhaps a timeless/transitional look with personal touches, or a cutting-edge room. In addition to aesthetics, functionality may be very important—a space that is more open and practical. But no matter what goals the homeowner has, incorporating sustainable materials can play an important role in creating a beautiful and healthful personal space.

U

sing sustainable materials for cabinets, tiles, countertops and paint can enhance the health and well-being of the entire family, lessening indoor air pollution from outgassing of toxic manufacturing chemicals and materials. To be more energy efficient and save money on utilities, a tankless water heater, spray foam insulation and floor heating system are also great choices when remodeling.

Sustainable Options

Nothing beats the natural look and visual beauty of real stone countertops, but of course, that’s not a cheap or ecofriendly option. Fortunately, the industry has caught up with the economy and created sustainable and affordable options for almost every design need and budget. For example, beautiful manufactured porcelain tile slabs, available in sizes up to five-by-10-feet, look like real Calcutta marble stone (cut from age-old mountains and shipped at a high monetary and fuel cost from overseas). These tiles can be used for floors, walls and countertops. Natural marble requires regular maintenance, and because it is a porous material, stains easily. Porcelain countertops do not stain or chip and are scratch-resistant, ensuring lasting beauty. It also can cost 40 percent less than marble and from an ecological standpoint, is typically made with 100 percent natural minerals (often recovered from other manu46

facturing processes), including quartz, kaolin, clay, feldspar, silica and natural coloring agents. Eco-friendly cabinets are also readily available. Look for those that are locally made using no-formaldehydeadded plywood and water-based stains and varnishes for better indoor air quality. Whether the need is for built-ins, foldouts or even pocket doors, sustainable cabinetry can be fashioned for

Chicago www.NAChicagoNorth.com

Many water-conserving plumbing fixtures are available on the market due to the growth of the green and eco-efficient market preferences. Toilets account for nearly 30 percent of indoor water consumption. Dual-flush toilets, available from many manufacturers, have two flush options and can save up to approximately 17,000 gallons of water a year. For the shower, consider switching to a low-flow shower head (two gallons per minute or lower), which still offers adequate water flow, but will save on water usage. Some new fixture technologies also infuse air into the water flow, ensuring an enjoyable, high-pressure bathing experience using less water. Tankless water heaters are a great option for saving energy and delivering instant hot water. Heaters can be installed for an entire home, a single room or even under one sink. They operate only when needed, avoiding the waste of natural gas or electricity that occurs when a conventional tank runs constantly. LED lighting is also recommended. In the last two years, the industry has stabilized light color and greatly reduced the cost to retrofit fixtures and bulbs. They are a great product that is cost-effective to run, emits little heat and has a life span of 15 to 20 years.

Air Quality

To ensure healthy indoor air quality, consider zero VOC (volatile organic compounds) paint for walls, ceilings and trim throughout the space and in an adjacent master bedroom. The finished space will be environmentally healthy, with the look and feel of a home spa retreat. Kevin Jotkus is president and owner of Green Living Designs and Globus Construction, located at 1930 1st St., in Highland Park. For more information, call 847-681-0126 or visit on Facebook.
