A
s I sit writing my 12th letter of the year to you, it’s hard to find the right words of inspiration to share to wish you a wonderful December. The holidays are here, with all the joys and experiences of this season of giving and love. Yet it is a complicated and conflicted world in which we live, and global peace is still our collective dream. So I will keep my message simple and yet oh-so-challenging. Find peace, make peace, keep peace. In your heart. In your actions. In your morning intention when you wake. In what you know to be true in your heart as you drift to sleep. Make peace and love the central themes of how you interact with your family, your children, the pushy person at the store and the rude driver in the other car that cuts you off. Do this because we need each and every one of us together to build collective peace, love and unity—this is a grassroots action we can all become active in every day. Today and always, no phrase rings truer than the traditional message of the season: “On Earth peace, and goodwill to all.” From everyone here in our Natural Awakenings Chicago family to you and those you hold dear, we wish you every joy this holiday season. May you find the opportunities to celebrate and find inspiration in the little pleasures of the season; may you find moments of blissful inner stillness; may you find comfort from suffering; and may you be surrounded in love and kindness.
Happy holidays! And many blessings for love and success in the new year.

newsbriefs Crowdfunding to Grow Young Farmers
F
amilyFarmed has launched a new campaign to raise much-needed funds to benefit the next generation of small farmers in the U.S. The mission of the campaign Help Us Grow Young Farmers! on the IndieGoGo crowdfunding site bit.ly/GrowYF is to raise $60,000 in tax-deductible contributions by December 6 to develop a Direct Market Success manual and training program to increase the number and proficiency of our young farmers. Donors can choose from an exciting list of perks offered by FamilyFarmed. They include donations from award-winning Farm to Table chefs, as well as from Chipotle Mexican Grill, Whole Foods Market and Farmhouse Chicago. More young farmers are needed because the average age of farmers in this country is approaching 60 and many are nearing retirement. Meanwhile, the numbers of farmers’ markets nationwide have quadrupled over the past 20 years. The manual will be integral in instructing new farmers in workshops across the nation. Nonprofit FamilyFarmed’s Wholesale Success program has already trained more than 7,000 farmers to sell into wholesale markets. For more information, visit FamilyFarmed.org.

Bioimpedance Provides a Roadmap to Weight Loss
C
ertified Acupuncturist Dr. Sarah Graef, DC, CCN, LDN, owner of Natural Solutions, in Vernon Hills, has added clinical-grade bioimpedance to her practice. She states, “Health can be hard to measure, and many people get frustrated with scales. While weight is part of the story, it certainly isn’t the whole story. Weight may stay the same while fat decreases and muscle increases. People may give up on their healthy changes because they don’t think it is helping.” She explains that bioimpedance fills in some of the holes by measuring much more than weight. A small Sarah Graef, DC, CCN, LDN electrical current goes through EKG electrodes that are connected to the wrist and ankle. A machine then interprets the resistance to the electrical signal and measures fat mass, lean body mass, metabolic rate and hydration, giving an overall measure of health, called phase angle. The process only takes a few minutes. Graef adds, “Bioimpedance offers an accurate look at where patients start, as well as clear feedback on progress after healthy lifestyle changes. The printout of the biomarkers is very motivating.” Location: 10 W. Phillip Rd., Ste. 114, Vernon Hills. For more information, call 224-577-5031 or visit NaturalSolutionsCN.wordpress.com. ourreaderswrite eventbrief Terrific Magazine… There are many useful and meaningful pieces of information tucked away in many of the articles in Natural Awakenings. Although I’m retired, I work part-time in a bookstore and I see more and more people of all ages increasingly stressed and apparently selling themselves daily to get more “stuff.” In addition, I see a dramatically increasing level of pretense in more people. I see this as a truly great loss in the quality of people’s lives. ~ Roger (Chicago)
Just a note to say… I enjoyed reading your piece on the cover of this month’s (November’s) Natural Awakenings. I love seeing the buds that trees and bushes put forth each fall in preparations for spring! I remember finally becoming aware of this as an adult, and realizing then what a spring-oriented, youthfocused culture we are that spring gets all the credit when the real work of regeneration occurs quietly each fall. Happy fall. ~ Susan (Milwaukee)

Sacred Sound Transcendental Meditation & Relax-Palooza Healing Weekend
L
isa Faremouth Weber, owner of Heaven Meets Earth Yoga Studio, in Evanston, is hosting a Sacred Sound & Transcendental Shivasana Journey at 6:30 p.m., December 5, as part of a Holiday Relax-Palooza Weekend. Bob Macko and Sven Oscar Hansen, of MahaRa Band, and DJ Taz Rashid are collaborating on this event. MahaRa has been providing the live music and sound healing for Weber’s outdoor yoga and live music events at Dawes House and the lakefront in Evanston for the last four years. Look for their summer season of outdoor yoga and live music during the Sven Oscar Hansen & Bob Macko summer starting in June 2016. Relax-Palooza debuts on December 6 from 3 to 5 p.m. A Thai/shiatsu massage station, patchouli facial treatment station, crystal bar and Oracle Card reading station will be available in the Chakra Sanctuary and Healing Palace, followed by Restorative Reiki Yoga by candlelight at 5:30 p.m. “Music is the language of the soul. I am deeply committed to healing sound experiences as a medicine for draining mind chatter and coming into the grace and beauty of present time,” says Weber. “There is a tremendous amount of scientific research on the health benefits of meditation and mindful practices. Experiencing a sound healing clears the energy field of toxic energy, trauma and residual energy. This energy healing allows for subtle body energy expansion which strengthens our nervous system and boosts our immune system. This is a medicine for us in the new paradigm.” Cost of Sound Journey is $25; Relax-Palooza is $95. Location: 2746 Central St., Evanston. Anthroposophic Remedies May Help Ease Migraine Symptoms by Eric Nagaj
M
igraines affect millions of people daily, and yet their precise cause remains elusive. The word migraine derives from the Greek hemicrania, signifying a half-head, and thereby pointing to the tendency for migraine headaches to be one-sided. The onesidedness of a migraine headache seems then to point to processes arising in the metabolic system of our bodily organization that overwhelm the true nerve-sense processes; simply speaking, blood process rushes to the brain. Thus migraine is a reaction against such imbalance. The human organism is made up of three systems working side-by-side. The head and nervous system consists of the life of the nerves and senses; the trunk and the rhythmic system includes the breathing and the circulation of the blood; and thirdly, the limbs and the metabolic system. These three systems comprise everything that, duly coordinated, keeps the whole human body in healthy working order. With a migraine, the brain may be called upon to vicariously complete the digestive process, functions for which it is not suited. In some individuals, certain foodstuffs cannot be digested fully and then pass as undigested foreign substances into the brain and nervous system: chocolate and cheese are well-known examples. Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner proposed a remarkable remedy for its treatment—Bidor tablets that contain ferrous sulfate (iron and sulfur) and silica (quartz). This combination of iron and sulfur acts on a pass-through point between the digestive and respiratory process. Sulfur intensifies the metabolic process and iron stimulates the respiratory process. By giving both iron and sulfur, we can harmonize metabolic and respiratory systems and prevent digestive function to overflow to the neurosensory system. By giving quartz, we can strengthen the system. Working with an anthroposophical physician, Bidor should be administered for a period of seven weeks, three times a day. Each course should be followed by an interval of five weeks, during which aurum D10 (a homeopathic preparation) can be given, along with course of treatment to improve liver function such as Hepatodoron, Chelidonium. Eric Nagaj, M.D., practices pain relief therapy at Arlington Advanced Medical Center, in Buffalo Grove. Bidor is available for purchase at his office. Emotional Stress Can Contribute to Gum Disease by Bernice Teplitsky
S
ometimes when we are under prolonged stress, our gums become sore. Those that have spent months working on a big presentation or studying for a major exam may experience stress-induced gingivitis. A metastudy published in the Journal of Periodontology in 2007 found a strong positive correlation between stress and psychological factors such as distress, anxiety and depression and gum disease. If untreated, gum disease can lead to bad breath and bleeding, swollen gums and even loose teeth. It is still unclear whether the connection has to do with hormonal changes that result from stress or from a relationship between stress and poor oral hygiene habits. In other words, people that are stressed may forget to go to the dentist regularly, floss daily, etc. They may also be more likely to smoke, use drugs or abuse alcohol. So, if we find ourselves suddenly suffering from swollen and bleeding gums after never having any issues, try to take a moment and relax. Sometimes that’s the best thing for our oral health. Dr. Bernice Teplitsky is a holistic dentist and owner of Wrigleyville Dental. Location: 3256 N. Ashland Ave., in Chicago. For more information, call 773-975-6666 or visit WrigleyvilleDental.com. Slow Down the Aging Clock
A
recent landmark Stanford University study in the Wall Street Journal, “Forever Young Broad Band Light” (FYBBL) reveals a light therapy that changes the way skin ages using an advanced form of intense pulse light (IPL), a four-pass technique, and collagen boosting. This half-hour procedure has no downtime—apply makeup and return to work immediately after treatment. Light therapy has also been effective on the face, neck, chest, back, hands and legs; even for comfortable, safe, effective hair removal. The procedure is very comfortable, without needles and virtually painless. FYBBL is both corrective (the “gold standard” for reversal of sun damage, pigments, abnormal blood vessels, rosacea, and acne) and preventive, because it slows down the aging clock by modifying gene expression, promoting younger and healthier cells, thereby improving texture and tone, reducing pores and boosting the body’s natural collagen production. It’s the most well-studied, anti-aging treatment in cosmetic dermatology, with 10 years of data, and hundreds of patients. Biopsies and skin exams show consistent reversal of sun damage, and observational data shows potential reduction in skin cancer risk. It does not interfere with Botox, fillers or other anti-aging treatments. “Expect to see results within days after your first treatment,” says Dr. Promila Banerjee, M.D., of Halo Laser and Aesthetic Medicine, in Northfield, who trained under Dr. Patrick Bitter, Jr., M.D., a leading authority on IPL/BBL and founder of FYBBL for skin.

Raydiant Day Offers Space for Growth and Engagement by Carrie Jackson
W
hen Peter and Aliess Kime opened Raydiant Day Center in October 2014, part of their purpose was to foster a nourishing relationship with others in the community. Their location on a tree-lined residential street in Evanston allows them to connect with neighbors walking by, other small businesses in the area and their natural environment. Through workshops, classes, special events and private sessions, Raydiant Day is a place for people to heal, get support for living their higher purpose and develop a sustainable, synergistic relationship to the Earth. Before they were married, Peter and Aliess knew that they were going to create something together. They both have a strong desire to create conscious community and opening a space where they could make that happen was a natural step. They found the space for Raydiant Day while driving by on an accidental detour one day. Something about it seemed just right, and they spent a lot of time painting and designing the inside to be a warm, welcoming, healing environment. “We spell Raydiant with a ‘y’ because we want to remind people of their light-filled nature; that we each shine our unique ray of spirit,” says Peter. On any given day, the Kimes can be found facilitating a Bright Body chakra attunement class, hosting a Movies that Move Us night, guiding a Nature’s Heart Workshop and Wonderwalk or leading a drum and talking stick circle. Aliess, who has been a dancer most of her life, also leads the weekly Nia classes. “It’s a very holistic fitness practice that honors the body and its interconnection with mind, emotions, and spirit. Dancing barefoot, you experience full contact with the floor and are more aware of how your

body feels in the movement. At the start of each class, I set a body focus and a larger intent for the session. This allows us to express and explore something different in each class,” she says. Peter, who has almost three decades of experience in spiritual healing and counseling, has spent years studying Bio-Energetics, Healing Touch therapies, meditation practices and the role of personal narrative in well-being. At Raydiant Day, he offers healing and counseling sessions in the Chrysalis room, a clay-lined session space, or over the phone. Each session is an organic process which begins with the client’s own aspirations and goals. Then, following a spirit-led inquiry, Peter may ask certain questions or use non-verbal methods such as gestures, touch points and drawing to access other levels of truth. “My job is to create a compassionate, non-judgmental space to help you go beyond the defenses of the lower ego mind and connect with the wisdom of your higher self,” he says. His most recent project, Raydiant Lightware, is a technology available online that he developed for personal empowerment and awakening. It uses

an interactive matrix of shapes, lines, color and light to bring clients to a more awakened and empowered state. He recommends it for people that want to have more vitality, sense of possibility, passion and purpose in their daily lives at work or play and in their relationships. The Kimes are growing their offerings this year to include a collaboration with a chiropractor that specializes in network chiropractic, a technique utilizing relaxing light touches that balance the nervous system and reactivate the body’s innate intelligence toward self-healing. They are also adding a Sunday morning group meditation and a quarterly Astrology Salon. Other ongoing offerings include a weekly Tuesday night 5Rhythms class and appointments on the BioMat for cell vitalization and brain entrainment for therapeutic relaxation and healing. The mission of the center is to help people create a conscious connection with themselves and each other and to help them be fit to enjoy a truly radiant life. While the Kimes don’t subscribe to one particular religion, they support all beliefs and encourage people to explore their own spirituality. “Ultimately, our well-being is dependent on recognizing the sacred in ourselves and each other, as well as the living Earth. We need to see and honor the radiance within everything,” says Aliess. Raydiant Day is a space that encourages people to be as present as possible in their everyday life. “Today, a lot of people are very active, but undernourished. We are so busy, but not necessarily with fulfilling activities. We’re here to support you in creating a life that’s truly nourishing; one that’s aligned with your heart’s vision in partnership with one another,” says Peter. Raydiant Day Center is located at 1400 Greenleaf St., in Evanston. For more information, call 847-869-6477 or visit RaydiantDay.com. See ad on page 17 and in the Community Resource Guide. Holiday Gifts with a Lasting Impact by Monte Luzadder
Make a charitable donation. Family and friends who are
passionate about social causes will appreciate your donation on their behalf. Many charitable organizations are savvy about holiday giving and publish “holiday catalogs” that describe gift levels in terms of how they further the charity’s work. Most charities have an online presence, making it easy to do your holiday shopping from the convenience of home. Keep in mind that a gift of this kind may be tax deductible, as well.
Give tickets to a charitable event. Buying and gifting
tickets to charitable events are another way to make your holiday shopping do double duty for the causes you and your loved ones care about the most. A gift of this sort provides a night on the town that may include entertainment, a silent auction, dinner and drinks.

free alternative, the oils’ aromatherapy benefits have time-proven therapeutic value,” suggests Dorene Petersen, president and founder of the American College of Healthcare Sciences, in Portland, Oregon. Recent research from the Pontificia Universidade Catolica, in Brazil, confirms that lavender oil has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and pain-relieving properties similar to those of a milddose narcotic. Plus, it smells heavenly, says botanical perfumer Roxana Villa, of Woodland Hills, a California-based spokesperson for the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy. “Considering the part of the plant used will give you an idea of its therapeutic value,” says Villa. “A root base will be good for grounding. Since bark is like skin, oils such as birch will benefit skin and muscles. Oils from flowers are excellent for anything related to the head and mind.” Oregano and cinnamon oils have powerful antifungal properties, even against Candida-type fungi resistant to prescription drugs, according to Brazilian research from Universidade Federal. A groundbreaking study from the Slovak University of Technology, in Slovakia, even suggests that rosemary oil can kill cancer cells. These are all scents that can be the foundations of do-it-yourself perfumes.

HEAVENLY SCENTS How to Make Your Own Natural Oil Fragrances by Kathleen Barnes
A
whiff of sweetness can communicate a personal signature of tranquility, alertness or romance, or it can cause a bout of miserable sneezing, wheezing or nausea for those in the vicinity and even the unwitting wearer.
Commercial Chemicals
“When you see ‘fragrance’ on a personal care product label, read it as ‘hidden chemicals,’” warns the Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit watchdog Environmental Working Group (EWG). “A major loophole in the [U.S.] Food and Drug Administration’s federal law lets manufacturers of products like shampoo, lotion and body wash include nearly any ingredient under the term fragrance without actually listing the chemical.” Companies that manufacture personal care products are required by law to list the ingredients they use, but fragrances and trade-secret formulas are exempt. What’s known as a dirty little secret in the fragrance industry is the unlabeled presence of toxic chemicals not only in perfumes, but in any personal care product that includes a 30

blend that becomes a personal signature,” says Charlynn Avery, an aromatherapist with Aura Cacia, in Norway, Iowa. She explains that essential oils have three basic “notes” and blending them correctly will result in a fragrance suited to last throughout the day. “The base note is heavier and lasts the longest. Patchouli, vetiver, sandalwood, cedarwood and jasmine hang around longer in the atmosphere and on the wearer,” she explains. Blending the base with a slightly lighter middle note like lavender, rosemary or clary sage and a light and short-lasting top note like orange, lime or peppermint will create a complex and pleasing blend. “That’s the beauty of the art of it,” says Avery. “You can create synergistic blends that harmonize and complement the attributes of each to such an extent that you may not be able to detect the scents of the individual oils.” There are no hard and fast rules, but our experts offer a few guidelines for creating our own unique blends that will be well-received as holiday gifts. Use a base of oil like jojoba or sweet almond to create a perfumed oil. Note that oils undiluted by a carrier can burn the skin. For oil-based blends, use a ratio of 50 drops of bottom note oil, 30 drops of a middle note and 20 drops of a top note in two ounces of carrier oil. Another option is to use an alcohol base of either isopropyl rubbing alcohol or 85-proof vodka to make a spray perfume; the alcohol will evaporate quickly. Alcohol-based blends generally last longer, especially with fragile citrus oils. A usual ratio is 10 to 20 drops of essential oil per ounce of alcohol-based carrier. Oil-based blends are ready to use almost immediately. Alcohol-based blends should age a week or two at least and will become more strongly scented in time. Store fragrances in bottles in a dark, cool place. Bottles with tiny roll-on caps are commercially available. “It’s very much trial and error to arrive at a preferred

greenliving Easy Lost-Cost Ways to
Lower Home Utility Costs by Megy Karydes
A
s temperatures dip, many of us are beginning to notice our gas and electricity bills rise because we’re spending more time at home. We’ve covered our windows with plastic and adjusted the thermostat to keep our indoors at a comfortable temperature, but there is more we can do that is inexpensive, easy to do over a weekend and allows us to still be mindful of our environmental impact. It is possible to make our living spaces more energy efficient, even if we’re not rich or have tons of time on our hands. Our experts, all of whom are grantees of the nonprofit Illinois Science and Energy Innovation Foundation (ISEIF) (iseif.org), which works to inform and engage Illinois consumers in the transformation to a digital electric grid, enthusiastically agree. We can easily reduce our electric costs while helping the environment by taking stock of what we’re already doing and where gaps still exist. “We’re so pleased to see how the array of approaches by our grantees to inform consumers is meeting the needs of a variety of market segments and really helping ordinary people to navigate big technological changes for their own benefit and for the benefit of the environment,” says ISEIF Program Director Clare Butterfield. Here are their top recommendations:
Mind the Gaps “Little steps make a big difference on your winter heating bills,” says Laura Goldberg, environmental outreach coordinator with the Citizens Utility Board (CUB) (CitizensUtilityBoard.org). “Hidden gaps around doors, windows and vents can waste up to 15 percent of your heating and cooling dollars, but a trip to your local hardware store can fix that.” Goldberg recommends using caulk (around $3 to $10 for a 10-ounce tube) or weatherstripping (typically $1.50 to $20 per 10 feet) to seal gaps around doors and windows. She also recommends checking to see if the insulation is even with or below the attic floor joints to see if it’s time to put in new insulation. Another place to consider adding insulation is the water heater, which often sits in a cold basement. “You can buy a blanket for about $20 to $40, and make sure the heater is set at 120 degrees,” she says. She reminds homeowners that utilities offer rebates for 32
efficiency improvements and products such as attic and wall insulation and duct sealing, so it’s worth a visit to a utility provider’s website to learn more.
Maximize Already Warm Air Most of us don’t consider
two simple air circulation methods: air vents and ceiling fans. Close unused air vents in the off season and make sure to use ceiling fans properly, says Lorena Lopez, outreach coordinator with Faith in Place (FaithInPlace.org). “If you have central air, you can close vents in rooms you’re not using so that you’re not paying to cool them, and vice versa in the winter,” she explains. To help circulate warm air, make sure ceiling fans are moving in the correct direction, an adjustment easily made on the wall switch or the fan itself. “Fans should run counterclockwise in the summer and clockwise in the winter. Turn them off in unoccupied rooms,” she adds.
Check the Thermostat “Set your thermostat to the lowest comfortable temperature and lower the temperature five to 10 degrees before going to bed and when leaving home for more than four hours,” recommends Anna Markowski, community projects manager, Building Performance Institute-certified building analyst and building envelope professional (ElevateEnergy.org). “If you have a forced air heating system, replace or clean your furnace filters once a month. This is an easy and affordable way to clean the air in your home while reducing your energy costs. When filters are clogged with dirt, the furnace must work harder to emit warm air. A new clean filter will have your furnace buzzing with efficiency,” she says. Because heating and cooling can burn nearly half of a household’s energy budget, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, it’s important to get this part right, and it’s an area in which most of us have room to improve, according to several studies. Traditional thermostats are big moneywasters, and even programmable thermostats rely too much on humans to set them right,” says Goldberg. “But new smart thermostats cut down on the human error and save you more than $100 a year—and these artful devices look great on your wall!” A smart thermostat is an innovative piece of technology that allows consumers to remotely control temperature settings from a smartphone or tablet—eliminating wasted gas and electricity costs when the home is empty. “The devices, which are equipped with motion sensors, even ‘learn’ your behavior over time to automatically adjust temperature settings without lifting a finger,” notes Goldberg. “Through May 2016, northern Illinois residents are eligible for up to $120 in utility rebates for purchasing and installing ecobee and Nest smart thermostats, cutting their price tag nearly in half,” she notes. “That means these devices could pay for themselves within one or two years and

esidents of northern Illinois are eligible for rebates of up to $120 on Nest Learning thermostat and ecobee3 smart thermostats that retail for $249, for customers with WiFi, central air and a furnace. Tinyurl.com/SmartThermostatRebates contains general information about the smart thermostat rebates offered by Illinois utilities. Specific information about each utility’s rebate application process is available by clicking on the logos. Smart thermostats are WiFi-enabled devices that allow residents to easily control the heating and air conditioning settings in a home via smartphones, tablets and computers. The technology is smart because it adapts to user behavior over time and generate energy savings automatically. Residents remain comfortable when home and reduce wasted money on heating and cooling energy while away at work or on vacation. Participants must be a ComEd/ Nicor Gas/Peoples Gas/North Shore Gas customer; purchase and selfinstall a qualifying smart thermostat before May 31, 2016; have a working WiFi connection in the home and have a compatible central air conditioner, heat pump and/or electric heating system. Self-installation rebates are $100 from ComEd and $20 from the gas utility. Rebates are also available when using a professional contractor for installation. Some other thermostats can be programmed to fit a schedule and lifestyle, with different settings for evenings or weekends. Smart thermostats may also be programmed, but they learn when people like which temperatures in what rooms and will automatically adjust to make them comfortable and also allow monitoring and control of the temperature from anywhere, using a smartphone or other web-enabled device.

then go on to generate hundreds of dollars in savings on future bills.” For those interested in learning more about the rebates, Goldberg recommends visiting the Environmental Law & Policy Center website, elpc.org.
Slay the Energy Dragons An-
other easy tip for significant savings is using electrical power strips, says Kristen Pratt, sustainability manager at the Chicago Academy of Sciences and Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum (NatureMuseum.org). “Many electronic devices, especially the ones with that ever-glowing little light, are constantly drawing electricity, even when powered down,” she says. “You can always unplug devices when they aren’t in use, but technological options exist, as well,” says Pratt. “If you use a power strip, you can switch the strip off when you’re done using the electronic device, and that will effectively cut off the electricity. You could also use a ‘smart strip’ for systems like your home entertainment devices or home office. If you plug your TV into the master outlet of the smart strip, turning off the TV will trigger a cut to the power to everything else on the strip (e.g., the speaker system, Blu-Ray player, DVD player, etc.).” Smart strips cost from $25 and up. Goldberg recommends contacting the electric utility company before heading to the local hardware store to make a purchase. “Many offer them for free, or at least with discounts or rebates,” she says. The bottom line is that there are plenty of ways to improve the household bottom line when it comes to gas and electricity bills this winter season. Most hardware stores have knowledgeable staff that will he happy to assist homeowners with their purchases and also take back anything that can’t be properly installed. Sharon Salzberg on Mindfulness Simple Ways to Be in the Present Moment by April Thompson
N
ew York City-born Sharon Salzberg experienced a childhood full of loss and upheaval, losing her parents and living in five different household configurations. In college, she discovered the power of meditation to transform suffering and cope with life’s never-ending changes. Born into a Jewish family, Salzberg first encountered Buddhism in 1969 in an Asian philosophy class, inspiring her to undertake an independent study program in India, where she was initiated into the practice via an intense 10-day retreat. “It was very difficult and painful. I sometimes doubted that I’d succeed, yet I never doubted that there was truth there,” she says. Upon her return home, Salzberg dedicated herself to the path of vipassana- (insight) meditation, becoming a renowned teacher and co-founding the Insight Meditation Society, in Barre, Massachusetts. Today she teaches and speaks to diverse audiences worldwide about the power of mindfulness. Salzberg has authored nine books, including the New York Times bestseller Real Happiness, Real Happiness at Work and Lovingkindness.
How do you define mindfulness? Mindfulness is the quality of awareness. When we are mindful, our perception of the present moment isn’t so distorted by bias, adding our own storyline to reality and pushing away what’s happening.
Is it possible to be mindful without having an established meditation practice? Yes, theoretically, but I suspect it’s hard.
34
Chicago www.NAChicago.com
I honor my own meditation practice for making mindfulness highly accessible for me. It doesn’t take many hours of prep work and is open to everyone. It’s really a practice, like strength training— you have to exercise the mindfulness muscle to reap the benefits.
What’s the best way to arrange time for meditation, and what can motivate us to practice regularly? Having a sense of structure has helped me the most. I believe strongly in the value of a daily practice, however simple or short. We can ritualize certain practices to help remember to pause and be mindful. For example, every time the phone rings, let it ring three times and use that as a trigger to breathe. When you’ve finished writing an email, take a few conscious moments before sending it. There are lots of ways to cut through the momentum of the busyness and craziness of our lives to return to mindfulness. Make a commitment to practice for a certain period of daily time for a month or two, and then reassess. Look for changes during the active course of daily life and query: How am I speaking to myself or to others? Am I more present? Am I more at ease in letting go? It’s important to look for these subtle changes rather than to set unrealistic expectations for ourselves such as being mindful all day.
Do you have other enabling practices for people new to the state of living mindfully?
continued from page 32…
Movement meditation is a good place to start; if you’re walking somewhere, try to be more present and feel your feet against the ground. Also, just focus on one thing at a time; instead of multitasking, just drink the cup of tea. We can also use breath to focus concentration. The breath is a tremendous tool, it’s always with us. If you’re in a contentious meeting and tempers flare, you don’t have to pull out a meditation cushion and sit in a funny position; you can work with your breath right where you are.
How can meditation help to ease suffering? Sometimes, we think we can ease suffering by only having pleasant feelings and beautiful thoughts. Rather, we can ease suffering by changing the way we relate to our thoughts and feelings. If something unpleasant is happening, most of us flip into an internal monologue about how, “Bad things always happen to me,” or “This is my fault,” or “I shouldn’t feel this.” We compound our suffering by adding judgment and by pushing away discomfort. Instead, we can learn to observe our reactions and release them. We also tend not to feel pleasure fully or think that something else or more should be happening instead of simply enjoying the moment. We wait for some sense of intensity in order to feel alive, rather than experiencing the ordinary to the utmost. Meditation trains us to be present with pleasant, unpleasant and neutral experiences and stay connected, no matter what’s going on.

SWEETLY VEGAN No-Bake Holiday Treats Worth Celebrating by Judith Fertig
“
V
isions of sugar plums” have been part of holiday mindsets since the advent of Clement Moore’s classic 19th-century poem commonly known as ’Twas the Night Before Christmas. We love to give and receive special treats and our tastes are evolving. Instead of yesteryear’s sugary bonbons loaded with calories that we’ve come to regret, today’s preferred confections focus more on naturally sweet dried fruits, bestquality chocolate, healthful coconut and crunchy nuts. Vegan, gluten-free delicacies from chefs and culinary experts the world over help us celebrate the season in a deliciously healthy way, including those we highlight this month. “Christmas isn’t Christmas without a traditional pudding,” says Chef Teresa Cutter, author of Purely Delicious. Cutter is founder and director of The Healthy Chef company, in Sydney, Australia, which creates functional foods for taste and optimal health. Her no-bake desserts such as miniature Christmas puddings and carrot cake take only minutes to make.
Emily Holmes, a Queensland, Australia, wellness coach who blogs at Conscious-Foodie.com, says her favorite is Holmes’ Chocolate Cherry Mini-Cupcakes. She serves them with a pot of peppermint tea. Houston-based Joshua Weissman is the author of The Slim Palate Paleo Cookbook and blogs at SlimPalate. com. He shares his philosophy on holiday treats: “My first thought is that I don’t want to feel guilty after eating it. My second is that I still want it to taste and look good.” His Almond Butter Pumpkin Pie Truffles fit the festive bill. In New York City, noted vegan cookbook author and Pastry Chef Fran Costigan is an expert in all things chocolate, including her Chocolate Orange Sesame Truffles. “When you make something really delicious with real ingredients, your mouth knows it, your brain knows it, your body knows it. You feel satisfied,” she says. Judith Fertig blogs at AlfrescoFood AndLifestyle.blogspot.com from Overland Park, KS.

he majority of the symptoms we can experience during flying—stiffness, poor circulation and swollen feet—are due to lack of movement rather than the altitude or pressurized cabin air. Knowing this can make healthy flying easier. Drinking lots of water and moving about and stretching every two to three hours on long flights is key; trips to the bathroom naturally help fulfill this. We also can keep blood from collecting in our lower extremities by finding a way to elevate our legs and feet periodically. Wiggle all 10 toes, shift positions and go for these six discreet airplane yoga stretches. Etiquette tip: Do the first two stretches at the back of the plane with adequate space and a wall to lean on. Don’t do these in the aisle; hanging on to someone’s seat back rocks it and can be annoying. A quad stretch involves the shoulders, upper legs, calves and ankles, while elevating each foot and getting the blood moving. Hang on to a wall, grab an ankle and bring the heel as close to the butt as possible. Then rotate the ankle in a circular motion. Do this as long as it feels worth doing, and then switch arms and legs. A calf stretch is a simple way to target calf and hamstring muscles, as well as ankles. Stand facing a wall, placing both hands Quad Stretch at shoulder height on the wall for

balance, elbows bent. Take one foot forward and rest it on its heel, with toes pointing up and resting on the wall. Lean forward to the point of feeling a good stretch in the calf. Stretch 30 seconds per foot, gradually going deeper into the pose after a few breaths. Etiquette tip: The next four stretches can be done in an airplane seat or in the back of the plane. The upper body stretch targets wrists, hands, arms, shoulders, back and the upper body in general. Sit upright with feet firmly planted on the floor. Lift arms up and interlace fingers before turning palms to face the ceiling. Relax the shoulders and neck. The arms shouldn’t be covering the ears and can be adjusted by moving them a few inches forward or back. Tall individuals may need to bend their elbows, which still allows for stretching of the upper body. Neck stretches release tension and stiffness by tilting the head from side-to-side. Don’t make circular motions, as they can cause neck and spine compression. If holding the head to assist a deeper stretch, be considerate of neighbors by pointing the raised elbow forward to cradle the neck instead of resting it on a seatmate. Twisting the torso benefits both the spine and back muscles. Yogis believe that twisting motions also massage internal organs. While twisting, hang on to the armrest with both hands and sit as upright as possible, with legs together and feet firmly planted. Don’t bounce into the pose or shift or lift buttocks off the seat, but make slow, fluid movements. Bending forward while seated gives the back, neck and legs a good, deep stretch. All of these movements work well while we’re in the air and are equally useful on road trips, in the office or whenever we need a break. Eat, Bark and Be Merry Healthy Holiday Treats for Our Pets by Sandra Murphy
A
s with families everywhere, special taste treats are on the menu for many dogs, cats and wild birds during the holiday season. Owners are cautioned not to share rich, unfamiliar foods from the table that can be detrimental to an animal’s health. Better fare are homemade treats of organic, safe and tasty ingredients—true gifts from the heart. Homemade assures the quality of ingredients, avoids unhealthy additives and allows the giver to adjust for individual taste or food sensitivities. Most healthy recipes can be made from readily available ingredients.
Wild Birds
Offer them a variety of seeds and fresh water. Always use unsalted, unseasoned seeds. Mix harder-to-crack striped sunflower seeds with the smaller black oil version to attract the largest number of birds. Organically grown peanuts in the shell, dried fruit, oranges, pomegranates or rehydrated raisins offer a burst of energy. Impale round fruits, halved, on a small dowel rod attached to the feeding table to hold them in place. Note that oats go to waste, shelled sunflower seeds spoil and cracked corn attracts raccoons. Pass on any kind of popcorn.
enjoy. Don’t use low-fat peanut butter because birds need to pack in the calories in order to stay warm.
Cats
Organic catnip, fresh or dried and baked into a crunchy treat, will bring kitty running. In recipes, avoid canned tuna because of bisphenol A (BPA) concerns; also minimize the frequency and portion of tuna and salmon treats due to mercury accumulation in the fish. Unseasoned tuna or salmon packed in water in a pouch is a better choice. Many recipes labeled for dogs can be converted for cats by making them into smaller bites.
Dogs
“When possible, I put organic and local foods, non-GMO, hormoneand antibiotic-free, grass-fed and humanely raised properties at the top of my list. A healthier

dog means fewer vet visits and more years together,” says Tonya Wilhelm, a dog trainer in Toledo, Ohio. “Buy in bulk from a co-op or farmer and maybe share with friends to get the best price.”
Dehydrated Foods
Dehydrating removes moisture from food while retaining nutrients, and comprises a distinct cooking method. Stephanie Raya, resident chef at Excalibur Dehydrator, in Sacramento, California, recommends, “For safe chicken and pork, pre-cook before dehydrating. Beef can be dehydrated from a raw state. My Boston terriers also love dehydrated, sweet potato chips.” A number of commercial dehydrated meat and fish jerkies have been recalled (search DogFoodAdvisor. com/?s=treats). Homemade treats offer superior control of ingredients. “When I make my pets’ treats, I know what’s in their food, including the herbs used for flavor,” says Raya. After she’s ensured that the food is thoroughly dried, she packs it in vacuum bags and stores them away from light. She notes that dehydrating takes longer than baking, but is cost-effective at 25 to 50 cents an hour. Veggie options include dehydrated zucchini chips, butternut squash chips, cherry tomato bites, matchstick carrots or peach or other fruit slices.
Make it Festive
A cat’s sense of smell is 10 to 15 times better than ours, but is still modest compared to dogs that out-sniff us by a factor of 30 to 60 times; that’s why putting wrapped treats under a holiday tree or in a stocking is a bad idea. Store them securely and then bring them out when it’s time to open gifts. Use blue tissue paper for easy-to-open Hanukkah gifts, red or green for Christmas (bows, yes; ribbons, no). For dogs that love puzzles, placing treats inside a wrapped box adds to the fun. Remember that rich or unfamiliar foods can make pets sick. Instead, gift them with their own healthy, safe treats from known ingredients so that everyone has a happy holiday. Connect with Sandra Murphy at StLouisFreelanceWriter@mindspring.com.

Happy Howlidays for the Whole Family by Candace Canty
W
hen we think of the holidays, we think about family, traditions and lots of parties to attend. It’s something wonderful we should truly enjoy, but for an unprepared pet parent, it can be more holiday headache than holiday cheer. No worries… the Howliday Guide is here.
Family
Whether we plan to take our dog to grand-paw’s house or the whole family is stopping by our place, we need to live by a few simple rules when it comes to guests. Loud noises, running children, new smells and faces can all be overwhelming to many canines. Even if Fido is a social butterfly, giving them a space of their own is extremely important. Designate a place that he can retreat to if he needs some alone time, like a spare bedroom, a crate or behind a baby gate. Or perhaps give him a complete break from the madness with a day or two at a doggy day care or boarding place. Communicate to guests and make sure they know not to feed pets table scraps or allow any unwanted behaviors like getting on the couch or jumping. Don’t be shy about telling guests to tone it down if you think your dog is being overwhelmed or acting up due to their attention. 44
Slowly introduce new people or groups by keeping him in a separate room until the dog is used to the sounds and smells of all the new guests and food items.
Traditions
Incorporating the family pet into family traditions is easy. Many people bake and decorate cookies at the holidays, so go ahead and include a dog friendly recipe. There are delicious recipes out there that are tasty for both dogs and satisfy our taste buds, too. Many families wake up to stockings full of surprises. Include the pup on this tradition and make them an extra-special stocking with a couple of bags of treats, a toy and a few chewies. Don’t forget a long-lasting chew like a deer antler or bully stick to keep them busy while everyone opens presents. Almost half of U.S. households have at least one dog, and more than 80 percent of those say they identify as their dog’s mommy or daddy, so we can confidently say it’s okay to buy our pet a holiday present. There are lots of fantastic items on the market, and shopping at a local independently owned shop is recommended because they traditionally curate a selection of the best merchandise, like high-quality, durable,
Chicago www.NAChicago.com
American-made items. When it comes to treats, choose natural, limited-ingredient treats like freezedried liver, dehydrated chicken strips and dried sweet potato. Some stores even carry canine pastries that could fool anyone with their elaborate decorating. They make great gifts for neighbors, teachers and relatives with dogs. Curious young dogs or teen wolves may need to be kept out of the Christmas tree room or away from other decorations. If a dog is tempted to inspect the tree on a regular basis, avoid edible decorations like popcorn strings or cranberries because they might jump up on the tree and pull it down onto the crowd. Tinsel and garland can also be dangerous if ingested as it may obstruct the intestines. Remember, it’s our responsibility to keep our pets safe.
So many parties, so little time
December can be one of the busiest times of the year, with shopping, staying late at work to wrap up projects, traveling to see family and sometimes attending multiple holiday parties. With the overwhelm of everything to do, don’t let a dog be an after thought. Line up a sitter or dog walker that can stop over and help out during busy times. Plan ahead so that we aren’t forgetting or pushing their walks off and making potty breaks shorter; that will only cause them more anxiety and stress, because not only are we away from them more, they also aren’t getting enough physical and mental stimulation, which will result in bad behavior. Stick as closely as possible to their normal routine. Try not to vary their feeding times, walking schedules or playtime activities. Locations: Dogaholics Retail boutique and offices, 3657 N. Gingerbread Mailmen 1½ cup oat flour 1½ cup brown rice flour 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp ground ginger 1 tsp ground cloves 1 egg ¼ cup blackstrap molasses ¼ cup peanut butter (unsalted) 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar ½ cup water Preheat oven to 350°. Combine all ingredients (except the water) together. Add water slowly and mix until a dough forms (if too dry, add more water, too wet, add a bit more flour). You may not need all the water if you reach a good consistency first. Roll out on a lightly floured surface to quarterinch thickness. Use a gingerbread manshaped cookie cutter (or any cookie cutter) to cut into shapes.

For dark brown icing: 1 cup unsweetened carob chips (do not substitute with chocolate) For white or light icing: 2 cups yogurt coated chips Natural liquid food coloring Heat the chips until soft in a double boiler (over low heat) or in the oven or microwave. Once soft, either dip your treats into them or use a pastry bag with a decorating tip to ice the cookies. If the carob or yogurt chips are too thick to work with when melted, you can add a splash of safflower oil to help thin it out, but be careful, because if you add too much oil, the icing won’t harden again when it cools. Manuka Honey is gathered in the wild back country of New Zealand from the native Manuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium). The bees don’t use the pollen from a variety of other flowers or plants, so the content of the honey is very consistent. A 2013 study in the European Journal of Medical Research used Active Manuka Honey under dressings on postoperative wounds for an 85 percent success rate in clearing up infections, compared with 50 percent for normal antibiotic creams.
