here’s a journalistic truism that admonishes writers not to begin by talking about the weather—it’s considered cliché. But this month I’m going to break that rule, because it’s one of the last really summery feeling days of the year, with a warm and gusty westerly breeze and temperatures in the 80s. I found it difficult to sit indoors at the computer, so I packed up the laptop and headed to my “auxiliary office”—the lakefront. Not surprisingly, I kept coming back to the theme of water. This year, stories related to water are everywhere in the news and in our lives. After the world learned last spring how easily public water supplies like those in Flint, Michigan, could become contaminated with lead and toxic substances, people began to ask more questions, and community officials started to test the water in schools, parks, commercial buildings and homes. The city of Waukesha, near Milwaukee, challenged the Great Lakes Compact with a request to divert drinking water from Lake Michigan, which was approved by the Council of Great Lakes Governors in June. Although the town is located outside of the lake’s watershed, their local wells are contaminated and they need another source. Elsewhere, towns with wells contaminated from runoff and chemicals may also seek to tap into the Great Lakes. Five-hundred-year rains deluged Louisiana, ruining homes and businesses, leaving residents stranded and resources damaged. Two publishers in our Natural Awakenings family experienced the flood and are still recovering. Here, heavy rains in August had people checking daily for flooded basements. On August 17, the city of Chicago and the Metropolitan Planning Council issued Our Great Rivers (GreatRiversChicago.com), the first unified vision and plan for restoration of the Chicago, Calumet and Des Plaines rivers. In September, we took The Mike Nowak Show (MikeNowak.net) on the road, broadcasting live radio from the inaugural Factory Farm Summit, in Green Bay, where I was impressed by passionate attendees from across the country talking about the effects of large-scale factory farms on air, land, people and animals, but especially water. “Water is the new civil rights issue of our time and will be so on an unbelievable level for our children and our grandchildren,” said Mike Wiggins, Jr., former chairman of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa in his keynote address. The Pipe Out Paddle Protest was held in September in Mackinaw City, Michigan, and here at Montrose Beach in support of protecting Great Lakes waters and shutting down Enbridge Line 5, an aging oil pipeline that runs under the Straits of Mackinac. And in mid-September, volunteers in seven states cleaned 266 Great Lakes beaches in the 25th annual Alliance for the Great Lakes (GreatLakes.org) Adopt-a-Beach event. What began April 1 as a small Native resistance encampment near Cannonball, North Dakota, has grown to a campaign of international stature that is being called a movement. Members of more than 200 tribes, supporters from indigenous groups in South America, celebrities and politicians, activists and concerned citizens have gathered in North Dakota and elsewhere to question what often seems an endless series of pipelines hauling oil across the country and endangering aquifers. “We’re all on this island together,” says Dallas Goldtooth, activist and national Keep It In The Ground campaign organizer for the Indigenous Environmental Network (IENEarth.org). “And this island is North America.” We owe it to ourselves and the next seven generations to stay abreast of the societal, political and economic tug-of-war that is taking place over the world’s supplies of fresh water. “Mni Wiconi” — Water Is Life (Lakota) Jim Irwin and Peggy Malecki

Learn to Harness Negative Emotions
P
sychotherapist Michelle Bersell will teach her Emotional Empowerment process in Chicago for the first time at an event called The Courage to Be YOU! from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., November 12 and 13, for anyone that desires greater physical, spiritual or emotional well-being for themselves or others. Bersell was recently invited to Harvard University for a thought leadership conference where she shared, in Ted Talk-style, why traditional psychology is failing women, especially those that consider themselves sensitive. According to Bersell, “Guiding women who are emotionally sensitive to get rid of their negative feelings is sentencing them to a lifetime of lowlevel misery, at best.” While providing statistical evidence to demonstrate why women are struggling emotionally more than men, she also provides a solution called Emotional Empowerment, the only modality that teaches how to understand the unique language of negative emotions. Bersell’s message is to evolve our relationship with our emotional selves to one of true freedom, where there is no need to release negative emotions, but instead receive their unique gifts. awn Sprong, founder of Made As Intended, has written Meditation 101: An Overview of What Meditation is and How it Can Help You, which inspired new collections of mala beads to be added to her Made As Intended retail assortment. “I made some malas for friends, and then I started meditating with them,” she says. “Something about the beads and a simple sutra brought meditation to a new level for me. I had never trusted anything or anyone before I actually started down the road of meditation and searching within myself, so I have to pass it along.” The initial collections of 71 bracelets and necklace/wrap bracelets in the Sacred Collection include a variety of 108-, 27- and 21-count malas made of riverstone, onyx or sandalwood, with sterling and semiprecious gemstones. Malas include information, a suggested mantra and gift bag. “I created the booklet because I just kept realizing how I had collected a variety of meditation techniques, and using them was the major reason my life changed,” says Sprong. The guide outlines nine simple meditation practices that any beginner can try, such as breath, white board, flying carpet and mala bead meditations. The meditation booklet is available free at http://bit.ly/2ckcsd5. For a free paper copy by mail, email Lauren@ MadeAsIntended.com. See ad on page 5.

Remove Varicose Veins Easily
U
SA Vein Clinics treats varicose veins with endovenous laser therapy (EVLT), a minimally invasive, in-office procedure that is often completed in approximately 15 minutes. Patients do not have to follow complicated pre-surgical instructions or go to a hospital to receive ELVT. There are many differences between varicose veins and spider veins. Both are caused by clogging of the blood vessels. Spider veins rarely cause pain, are small and fine and are mostly red, purple and blue in color, usually having a linear pattern that looks somewhat like the web of a spider. Varicose veins are more serious. They are bigger and the affected veins are bulky to look at. These more resemble thick ropes that bulge and protrude and seem to be coming out of the skin. Varicose veins are painful, causing discomfort with itching, burning and swelling, and can cause further complications. With new treatments like EVLT, in most cases, patients can resume their normal daily activities right away. For more information, call 847-607-6497. See ad on page 3.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a simple, non-invasive and painless treatment modality that facilitates the body’s natural healing process by providing inhalation of 100 percent oxygen instead of the 20 percent concentration in the air around us. In a hyperbaric chamber, the atmospheric pressure can be increased by a factor of one-and-a-half to two-and-a-half, and ensure that the extra oxygen reaches damaged tissue anywhere to support the body’s own healing process. HBOT is used in a variety of conditions, including wound healing, concussion, neuropathic pain, chronic stroke, toxicity, neuropsychiatric disorders, tickborne illnesses, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, consequences of cancer or stroke, sports injury, and more. Location: 440 Lake Cook Rd., Deerfield, in The Neuroscience Center. For more information, call 847-945-4268 or visit hbot.md. See ad on page 11 and in the Community Resource Guide.

Cool Down the Sensors Vitamin D3 and Eliminate Pain Boosts Gut W Health
e have all experienced the aches and pain that come from leading active lives. Joint and muscle pain, arthritis, strains and bruises are things we all live with. Now, Young Living has introduced Cool Azul Pain Relief Cream, the first over-the-counter pain relief medicine that meets Young Living’s high standards of purity and quality. Pain is felt when sensory neurons are activated by local irritation. This irritation generates pain signals that travel through the nervous system to our brain. The resulting pain can interfere with our daily lives by keeping us from the activities we love. Applied topically, Cool Azul Pain Relief Cream absorbs quickly to relieve pain. This unique cream combines the powers of natural menthol and wintergreen to give lasting relief we can feel. The cream works in two ways, the first is through a mechanism called counter-irritancy. Pain signals are generated when specialized nerves, called C fibers, are activated. These fibers carry the pain signal through the nervous system to the brain. When Cool Azul Pain Relief Cream is applied, the active ingredients, methyl salicylate and menthol, quickly interact with a secondary set of nerve fibers called A delta fibers. The signals produced from this interaction travel along the A delta fibers until an inhibitory nerve is triggered. This mechanism disrupts the transmission of pain signals, blocking them from traveling to the brain. The second mechanism of action involves the triggering of cold-sensing TRPM8 receptors. As pain sensing nerves are activated, an electrical signal is generated. This signal travels through the nervous system to the brain. When the Cool Azul Pain Relief Cream is applied, the active ingredient menthol binds with the cold-sensing TRPM8 receptors. This binding event triggers the release of calcium and sodium ions which mitigate the transmission of pain signals. These signals are replaced with the cooling sensation of menthol and pain is relieved. Using both of these mechanisms, the plant-based formula of Cool Azul Pain Relief Cream gives a lasting comfort that we can feel. To order or for more information, call 847-772-0212 or visit www.YoungLiving.org/Karen Duewel. See ad on page 8. 16

esearch from Austria’s University of Graz has found that high-dose vitamin D3 significantly alters the gut’s microbiome for the better. The researchers tested 16 healthy people for eight weeks, giving them a dose of 980 international units (IU) per kilogram (2.2 pounds) of body weight. At this rate, a 150-pound person would take more than 66,000 IU per day. The scientists took samples from the stomach, small intestines, colon and stool before and after the testing period. They also tested for bacteria species using gene sequencing and measured T-cell counts. Afterward, the subjects showed reductions in disease-producing bacteria and increased diversity among their gut probiotics. The research also discovered that the high-dose vitamin D3 supplementation increased immunity in the gut. “Vitamin D3 modulates the gut microbiome of the upper gastrointestinal tract, which might explain its positive influence on gastrointestinal diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease or bacterial infections,” the researchers explain.
Acupuncture Eases Hot Flashes
R
esearchers from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center tested 209 women between 45 and 60 years old with a history of hot flashes and/or night sweats. After up to 20 treatments over six months, the women receiving acupuncture reported a 37 percent reduction in hot flashes, while the control group saw a 6 percent increase. The symptom relief among the women treated with acupuncture persisted for a year. The researchers also found that the acupuncture group experienced an improvement in several menopausal quality of life measurements. Nancy Avis, Ph.D., a professor of public health sciences at Wake Forest University and lead author of the study, says, “There are a number of nonhormonal options for treating hot flashes and night sweats that are available to women. None seem to work for everyone, but our study showed that acupuncture from a licensed acupuncturist can help some women without any side effects. It also showed that the maximum benefit occurred after about eight treatments.”

esearch published in the American Journal of Medicine found that treating people with a blend of cold-pressed sesame oil and rice bran oil significantly normalizes blood glucose levels. Testing involved 400 men and women for eight weeks, including 300 that had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, by replacing cooking oils in their diet with a blend of sesame and rice bran oil. The researchers, from Japan’s Fukuoka University and India’s Council of Medical Research, divided the patients into four groups. For two months, 100 healthy people and 100 Type 2 diabetes patients replaced their cooking oils with the sesame/rice bran blend, another 100 Type 2 diabetes patients were treated with five milligrams per day of the diabetes drug glibenclamide (glynase in the U.S.) and the remaining 100 Type 2 diabetes patients were treated with a combination of the same dosage of glibenclamide, along with consuming the sesame/rice bran oil blend over the two-month period. After four weeks and eight weeks, the researchers found the diabetes patients that consumed the oil blend had significant reductions in fasting and post-meal blood glucose levels. They also had lower levels of glycated hemoglobin, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol) and improved high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (“good” cholesterol). Those treated with the diabetes drug without consuming the oil blend showed none of the same improvements.

eventbrief Peterson Garden Project 30 Days of Doing Seeks Volunteers
P
eterson Garden Project is seeking sponsors, partners and participants to support 30 Days of Doing, an action campaign to be held between October 15 and November 15 to build new, pop-up victory gardens, harvest existing gardens, donate to food and nutrition partners, learn about how food gardening and home cooking education makes a difference in people’s lives and raise funds for scholarships and Grow2Give food donation program for 2017. Community building, volunteering, sponsorship and excitement are in store as the Peterson Garden Project works toward their mission to recruit, educate and inspire everyone to grow and cook their own food. Garden gleaning involves going into the gardens after they close for the season and pick (glean) whatever is left and donate it to our food and nutrition partners—mostly fresh produce and herbs in time for Thanksgiving. Fresh Fridays are events for seniors with a dietician from Swedish Covenant Hospital talking with a resident chef about how food impacts health along with a cooking demonstration. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved: volunteer in the garden, sign up for a cooking class, come by for a drink at an Inspiration Eve, enjoy dinner at an Underground Harvest Supper and much more. Those that can’t attend the events can still be part of the 30 Days of Doing by donating to the online campaign at bit.ly/30DaysPGP. There’s a Grewbie 102 Class on October 15; Sundays with Seniors Cooking Class (all ages welcome) October 16; cooking demonstration at Whole Foods Edgewater October 18; Inspiration Eve on October 19; Canning 101: Pickles October 20; Fresh Fridays: Cancer-Fighting Foods October 21; All Garden Work Day (Tinyurl.com/PetersonWorkDay) and Glorious Garlic in the Garden Class October 22; Stories from the Garden Chicago Ideas Week Lab October 23; cooking demonstration at Whole Foods Edgewater October 25; Inspiration Eve October 26; Herbs 101 Cooking Class October 27; Mulch Magic Garden Class October 29; and Garden Build October 30. One in Five Plant Species May Face Extinction A new report from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in the UK, has issued the first comprehensive assessment of plant life, the inaugural State of the World’s Plants, and found that one in five plants may be at risk of extinction due to invasive species, disease and changing landscapes. Researchers also have determined that just 30,000 plant species have a documented use out of hundreds of thousands of known species. These are only the vascular plants that have specialized tissue for sucking up water through their systems. Over the years, different people and agencies have identified the same plant at both different times and locations, so they may have accumulated multiple names. The Kew researchers determined that each plant in the International Plant Names Index had, on average, 2.7 different species names. By cutting out the duplicates from more than a million different names, the Kew report was able to pare down the known species to 391,000. In the Arctic, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, a doomsday bank buried in the side of a mountain, contains more than 800,000 samples representing 5,100 different crops and their relatives. Clean Water for a Healthier Body by Carrie Jackson
K
arol Dolega’s fascination with clean drinking water started with his desire to maximize his own hydration. As a world record-holding marathon runner, Dolega wanted to get the most benefit out of the water he was drinking to improve his performance. After much research, he founded ProEcoLife, in Chicago, to provide healthy, clean, good-tasting water, educate people about water quality and build a community of its customers. Dolega has trained and run marathons all over the world, but noticed that in places like Switzerland, where they have a reputation for clean water, he performed better in spite of higher altitudes. When he moved to the U.S. from Europe, he was not happy with the tap water. “I was developing allergies and my muscles and ligaments weren’t recovering as quickly. Proper hydration helps the body to function optimally, and that means water that is clean and free of chemicals,” he says. ProEcoLife offers a variety of filter options and filtration systems, all tailored to offer the best water quality, whether for a deep water well or an urban water supply. “Our customers get peace of mind knowing they’re drinking water free of lead, barium and other heavy metals, fluoride, pesticides and herbicides, hormones, steroids and drugs, radioactive substances and all other impurities,” says Dolega. Eighty percent of all diseases have a direct connection with the water we drink, but many consumers don’t realize that.
20
“The levels of toxins and chemicals in most water are alarming, and are thought to cause cancer and other serious diseases,” says Dolega. Unique to the industry, they use a filter made with shungite stone that employs fullerene molecules consisting of several dozens of carbon atoms to fight free radicals by mimicing natural spring water and reverse osmosis to purify the water. “The filtration process is a multi-stage procedure,” says Dolega. “The first stage removes the big impurities using a high-end, natural carbon filter made from coconut trees. The second stage pushes the water through a reverse osmosis membrane, which cleans it down to a grade that’s as pure as what they use in the Army.” The filters have a warranty of 10 to 15 years, and Dolega makes it a point to develop relationships with his customers. “They’re not just getting a product; they’re getting a service. We offer free installation, 24-hour support, a monitor system, education and anything else our customers need,” he says. “Families that used to spend hundreds of dollars a month on bottled water are now going back to using tap water, which in addition to saving money, takes all those empty plastic bottles out of landfills.” Dolega encourages people to learn the facts about the water they’re consuming and become educated

about the quality and purity. “Chicago publishes a Water Quality Report every year which lists microbial and inorganic contaminants including barium, copper, lead and nitrate, and radioactive contaminants such as radium. Some of the lead levels in the Chicago Public School System (CPS) are 300 times the allowable limit. Only about a third of the CPS schools have water that is leadfree,” says Dolega. ProEcoLife offers systems for any size home or business, whether it’s a private apartment, multi-family home or large office structure. “We can customize and scale the products to fit any space. We do a lot of work in restaurants and catering businesses, but also in schools and office buildings. We have affordable payment plans that will save our customers money in the long run because they’re not buying bottled water and they’re feeling healthier overall,” says Dolega. ProEcoLife is located at 7109 Higgins Rd., in Chicago. For more information, call 312-885-7777 or visit ProEcoLife. com. See ad on page 33. Chiropractic to the Rescue It Helps IBD, ADHD, PMS and Other Conditions by Edward Group

hiropractic care corrects spinal alignment abnormalities as a means of treating a wide range of health problems. Addressing skeletal and muscular disorders and relieving pain are just the beginning. Research studies reported in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics and the journal of healing science Explore have found chiropractic beneficial in treating connective tissue abnormalities, infant lactose intolerance and even autism. More than $13 billion is spent annually on chiropractic health services, making it the largest alternative health practice in the U.S. Science supports its usefulness in addressing a wide range of conditions. Bell’s Palsy. Recovery varies among patients as chiropractors create patientcentric treatment programs designed to improve facial motion and hearing, relieve pain and address other nerverelated issues (Archives of Internal Medicine; Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics). Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). A Canadian survey of chiroprac24
tors has reported success in using spinal manipulation to relieve IBD, colitis and other bowel disorders (Canadian Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology). Cancer. The Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine publishes numerous studies of therapies supporting cancer patients suffering the side effects of conventional treatment. The American Journal of Clinical Oncology reports that chiropractic care rates as one of the leading alternative medical treatments for pain management, among other related benefits. Chiropractic offers economical and effective strategies that may help quality of life, as discussed in Seminars in Oncology Nursing. High Blood Pressure. While many relevant studies can’t yet generalize results, the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics documents success by chiropractors treating hypertension without the downside of medical drugs that can include the risk of stroke (University of Alabama at Birmingham). A study published in a journal from the the University of Virginia School of Medicine Center for the Study of Complementary and Alternative Therapies notes that arthritis patients obtaining chiropractic care enjoyed better health and quality of life than those that did not. Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS). In clinical studies, combining manual spinal adjustment with soft tissue therapy has been found to relieve PMS discomfort. In one study, two groups of women were tested, switching off in receiving chiropractic adjustments or a placebo alternative. Each time, the group receiving chiropractic adjustments reported the greatest improvements (Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics). Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). A study published in Explore suggests that chiropractic care combined with other holistic elements such as appropriate nutrition may provide a more gentle, yet effective approach than conventional psychotropic drugs. It employed chiropractic treatment for boys 9 to 13 years old diagnosed with ADHD. Spinal manipulation with nutritional supplementation was reported to improve hyperactivity, inattentiveness, impulsiveness and behavioral, social and emotional difficulties. Headaches. Based on recent studies, spinal manipulation has proven effective against migraines and headaches originating from the neck. Manual therapy of the spine, along with neck exercises, promotes improvement in patients with neck-related headaches. Side effects are rare and minor (Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics). Considering a
Mediated Divorce Settlement by Cindy K. Campbell

ivorce stories are much like war stories, only funnier—when it involves our neighbors instead of us and our soon-to-be ex. Mediation, the process of an expert guiding divorcing parties, makes a great deal of emotional sense. Compared to hostile negotiations and potential litigation, mediation makes tremendous financial sense, too. Consider the value of a trustworthy, experienced mediator that has the ability to isolate difficult issues and help couples work collaboratively without animosity toward a successful conclusion. One step removed from media-

tion is the collaborative divorce. While each party retains his or her own counsel, everyone involved agrees to participate in the negotiation and settlement process. The parties themselves, attorneys and possibly a team of therapists and/or other professionals work together to help reach an amicable resolution. Mediation or a collaborative divorce are not right for everyone, but every divorcing couple should consider the benefits. It is private, with no public record; maintenance, support, visitation and division of assets and debts are all included in a central pot that can be resolved piece-by-piece or with some give-and-take that keeps both partners involved and focused on managing issues both big and small; plus, the couple maintains total control, with no unfavorable impositions by a judge. Parenting decisions are in the agreement, so the interests of the children come first. The case is not filed until a resolution is reached, so the parties do not have to worry about the stress of litigation and trial. Also, they are more likely to abide by the agreement after the final dissolution, and that means a greater likelihood of open discussion when future parenting concerns come up. All of these reasons make it better to stay focused on the end result and work through a collaborative or mediated divorce to avoid the stress of being stuck in a lawyer’s office over who gets what in the household. Perhaps the biggest benefit is that without protracted haggling and court time, these options are far more cost-efficient. Cindy K. NO MORE NIGHT SWEATS! Laboratory research shows that over 60% of women will be in need of hormone therapy and hormone replacement medications at some point in their lifetime. Save Rite Pharmacy & Compounding offers compounded medications available in a variety of dosages styles and methods to help women who suffer symptoms due to common hormonal imbalances and deficiencies, including: • Menopause • Irregular menstrual cycle • Moodiness • Hot flashes • Post-partum depression • Decreased libido • Weight gain • Vaginal dryness • Painful sexual intercourse • Sleep disturbances • Night sweats • Osteoporosis • Pre Menstrual Syndrome (PMS)
For some women, these medications will be in the form of patient specific Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT). However, not all women’s

Meeting Basic Needs Komal Ahmad was unaware that her single act of kindness in simply offering to share her lunch with a homeless veteran in 2011 while she was attending the UniKomal Ahmad versity of California, Berkeley, would lead to a multiplying mission to feed America’s hungry. His heartfelt expression of gratitude for his first meal in three days sparked an epiphany: Her school was regularly throwing away thousands of pounds of food while neighbors were going hungry. Today, Ahmad is the founder and CEO of Copia, an app that matches nonprofits serving in-need veterans, children, women and others with companies that have leftover gourmet food. Her nonprofit helps resJanet Boscarino taurants to conserve water and energy, develop recycling and composting systems and switch to biodegradable containers and environmentally friendly cleaning operations. Boscarino’s experience in business development and sales, combined with her disdain for litter, led her to found the nonprofit Clean Memphis, which began in 2008 with volunteer crews picking up litter. In recent years, the initiative’s community-wide strategy has expanded to involve local governments, businesses, neighborhoods, faith-based organizations and 20 local “sustainable schools”. In 2017, Project Green Fork will become a part of Clean Memphis. Throughout two decades of educational activism, John G. Heim’s passion for clean water as a human right John G. Heim has not waned.
The founder and leader of The SWFL Clean Water Movement, headquartered in Fort Myers Beach, Florida, persisted even when many business owners considered him a nuisance, driving off tourists. As infestations of blue-green algae blooms have reached emergency levels, Heim’s ongoing grassroots campaign to increase awareness of water quality issues that’s backed by social media recently brought him to Washington, D.C., to make his case before Congress. The nonprofit’s 18,000 members have succeeded in bringing national attention to the thick muck now plaguing both Florida coasts. Fair trade comprises an alternative business model that focuses attention and resources on the triple bottom line: people, the planet and profits. Fair trade businesses pay fair wages to the artists, makers and farmers that make their products using environmentally friendly methods, investing in the communities where they work and more, all while building successful brands, creating beautiful products and turning a profit. In a world where more than 1 billion people live on less than $1 per day, fair trade businesses are providing sustainable jobs to the poorest of the poor, giving them the opportunity to transform a

he Second City comes in first place with the largest concentration of fair trade businesses in the country. This might seem insignificant, but it is not; the ethical economy is expanding quickly, and Chicago is at the forefront of this growth, poised to be a leader in a truly global movement. Chicago Fair Trade (CFT), a nonprofit coalition with offices in Chicago’s Printer’s Row, is leading the charge to grow the fair trade industry in the region, and this year the organization celebrates their 10th anniversary. The past decade has been one of enormous growth and success for CFT. In 2006, a small, dedicated group of activists, volunteers, community leaders and businesses formed a nonprofit organization with the mission to increase awareness and demand for fair trade products. In 2008, CFT launched a campaign to have Chicago designated a Fair Trade City. Over the years, CFT has partnered with allied businesses, congregations, student organizations, political groups and activists to make the city the fair trade hub it is today.
life of poverty into a life of opportunity. Chicago was officially named a Fair Trade City in 2011 and a Sweatfree City in 2014. Last year, Cook County was named a Sweatfree County; the largest in the country to receive the designation. Chicago Fair Trade currently lists more than 50 business members, by far the largest concentration in the U.S. “Ten years ago, when Chicago Fair Trade was first formed, we had three business members,” says Katherine Bissell Cordova, executive director of Chicago Fair Trade. “We have seen it snowball in the last few years; people are seeing firsthand that there is a better way of doing business and founding their own brands based on fair trade principles.” Dozens of religious congregations in the Chicago area are promoting fair trade by organizing holiday markets, hosting speakers from the CFT Fair Trade Speakers Bureau as part of their Fair Trade in the Sanctuary program and selling fair trade coffee and chocolate each week after their services. CFT partnered with students at DePaul University to form the DePaul Fair Trade Committee in 2012 and helped them receive status as a Fair Trade University. In the years since, they have launched a Chicago Students for Fair Trade Meetup group that convenes twice a year to share ideas and host fair trade events on campuses around the city. Northwestern University, Columbia College and Loyola University have all launched similar campaigns to become Fair Trade Universities. Chicago Fair Trade has also partnered with national and international organizations such as the Fair Trade Federation, the World Fair Trade Organization, Fair Tuesday and Fashion Revolution to raise the profiles of Chicago fair trade, sustainable and ethical businesses in a growing, global marketplace.

The nonprofit helps rural Haitians build composting toilets and develop organic gardens using recycled waste as fertilizer. It also provides community hygiene education and reforestation. Everything is aimed at breaking Haiti’s widespread cycle of contamination and disease, and safely convert human waste into agricultural fertilizer that’s increasing crop productivity and the availability of healthy food. Psychotherapist Jacqui Bishop and Integrative Nutritionist Lisa Feiner, co-founders of Sharp Again Naturally, in White Plains, Jacqui Bishop New York, believe that dementia is reversible, and no case should be considered hopeless until all causative factors have been tested and ruled out. Their resolve for eliminating causes of disease rather than managing symptoms is based on University of California, Los Angeles, research studies and sources quoted in a Health Advocates Worldwide documentary.
Project Yoga Richmond, established in 2010, makes yoga accessible to everyone in the city’s metro region. Thirty yoga teachers lead pay-what-youLisa Feiner can studio classes that help fund 22 outreach programs for underserved communities. Healing programs are designed for needs related to autism, recovery, seniors, special students and youths in the court system. “We also provide continuing instructor education, visiting teachers, workshops and other special events that deepen yoga practice in our community,” says co-founder Dana Walters, who serves as the board of directors vice president.
Enriching Lives
As an Emmy Award-winning trumpeter, composer, educator and co-founder, conductor and artistic director of the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic (CJP), Orbert Davis is dedicated to multi-genre projects. His collaborative research in 2012 while in Cuba on a people-to-people exchange accompanied by fellow musicians and River North Dance Chicago’s Artistic Director Frank Chaves (now retired) proved to be a multifaceted boon. It generated the philharmonic’s Havana Blue live performance in 2013
and ignited a weeklong cultural exchange with Cuba’s Universidad Ciudad de las Artes (ISA) during his Orbert Davis return trip for the Havana International Jazz Festival in 2014. President Barak Obama’s announcement of the normalization of Cuban/U.S. diplomatic relations opened up the possibility for a continuing CJP/ISA relationship, as well as their 2015 landmark partnered event when 37 ISA students traveled to Chicago to perform Scenes from Life: Cuba at Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre. Davis promises more such events to come. All of these individuals represent a small percentage of the game-changers actively moving to create an alternative future. Estés observes, “What is needed for dramatic change is an accumulation of acts; adding, adding to, adding more, continuing. We know that it does not take everyone on Earth to bring justice and peace, but only a small, determined group that will not give up during the first, second or hundredth gale.” Linda Sechrist is a senior staff writer for Natural Awakenings. Planet-Friendly and Profitable The Rise of Ecopreneurs by Avery Mack
W
hether it’s a sideline or full time, flourishing small businesses stimulate the economy. The U.S. Small Business Association found that between 2009 and 2013, companies with fewer than 500 employees accounted for 60 percent of net new jobs. Technology allows new commercial ventures to be launched from home, yielding huge savings in startup costs. Owners have found ways to fulfill needs by leveraging their past job experiences and personal interests.
House and Garden
When the economy faltered in 2008, Dave Marciniak, owner and lead designer at Revolutionary Gardens, in Culpeper, Virginia, offered eco-friendly services. “I focus on a few key points and design to make the outdoors a place where people want to be,” he says. Even for urbanites, fresh garden
herbs are available thanks to ecopreneurs like Andy Avramenko, who created TrendyThing, in New York City. “The edible plants our bike messengers distribute come from local farmers,” he explains. Basil, parsley, dill, lettuce and other herbs and greens are available for all five boroughs; potted plants arrive fresh weekly via subscription. In addition to cleaning homes, Debbie Sardone, owner of Speed Cleaning, in Lewisville, Texas, saw an opportunity to manufacture her own green cleaning products. They’re part of a full-line online catalog. Ryan Riley and his wife, Ashley Spitz, of Los Angeles, own and operate Biz Bagz, dog waste bags made in America from bio-based resins and recycled plastics. He notes the genesis of their idea: “Landfills are anaerobic, so biodegradable bags don’t get the oxygen required to break down.
isak55/Shutterstock.com
Compostable bags are available, but few places provide composting services. We offer a cleaner alternative.” Another pet-inspired idea was spawned when Kevin Li, of Manhattan, New York, left his puppy home alone for the first time. He invented an app-operated remote control ball with a camera called PlayDate (Tinyurl.com/ RemoteBallApp).
Personal Care
People- and planet-friendly personal care products address other ongoing customer needs. Nitya Gulati, founder of Sugarloom Cosmetics, in Ashburn, Virginia, specializes in Americanmade, vegan, cruelty- and toxin-free nail polish. She advises, “Look for ‘five-free’ on the label, which means no formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate, toluene and allergens camphor and formaldehyde resin. Watch out for guanine, made from fish scales, found in glittery polishes. Oleic acid, a thickener, is animal fat. Vibrant reds may contain carmine, made from boiled, crushed beetles.” She warns that products tested by a third party can obscure animal testing during product development. Amelia Swaggert and Elizabeth Ripps, co-founders of California Scrub Company, in Los Angeles, upcycle coffee grounds into a natural facial scrub. They’ve eliminated plastic at every step of production from sourcing to packaging. They’re also helping to keep the world’s oceans from becoming plastic soup by supporting the Beat the Microbead campaign. (BeatTheMicrobead.org/en). Maintaining a professional look while living green can be a challenge. OneSavvyMother.com found a stylish, eco-friendly, lightweight and durable tote bag designed by Natalie Therése. The vegan cork tote is made in Boxford, Massachusetts. Shavings from the bark of the cork oak tree grown in Portugal are transformed into ultrathin sheets to produce cork fabric; the certified organic cotton lining is pro-

Out and About Mya Zeronis saw a need for healthy food and stepped out of her comfort zone to fulfill it through her extra VEGANza Pgh restaurant and its catering arm, Lean Chef en Route, recognized by Sustainable Pittsburgh. “We source locally, compost produce scraps, serve meat- and dairy-free menu options, practice food waste management with root-to-stem preparation and maintain energy conservation,” she says. Customers are encouraged to bike to the restaurant; there’s even a bicycle air pump and flat tire repair kit on the premises if emergencies arise. Shared bikes are a welcome addition at colleges for budget-minded and time-strapped students. Rented by the hour or day, they’re a convenient, healthy and non-polluting way to get around campus. New York University at Buffalo students can remotely locate, rent and unlock GPS-enabled bikes. At Williams College, in Williamstown, Massachusetts, the Purple Bike Coalition provides free use of bikes and a staffed repair station; a cargo bike helps transport larger objects. Entrepreneurs are creative by nature; seeing a need and asking, “What if?” Eco-friendly, green-minded entrepreneurs take ideas a step farther, working to ensure the health of consumers and the planet. They succeed as they serve and inspire us all. Connect with the freelance writer via AveryMack@mindspring.com.

Celebrating Chicago’s Three Great Rivers by Ariel Ranieri
C
hicago’s rivers are getting the attention they deserve, and we can be a part of making them great. On August 17, the city of Chicago and the Metropolitan Planning Council issued Our Great Rivers (GreatRiversChicago.com), the first unified vision for the Chicago, Calumet and Des Plaines rivers, with recommendations and goals to ensure Chicago’s rivers are productive, living and inviting spaces by 2040. By encouraging more jobs along the riverfront, instilling a source of community pride, promoting a connection with nature and bringing about more open space and recreation opportunities, Our Great Rivers will change the way people think about and experience these important waterways. “From opening new boathouses to reinventing the Riverwalk, we’ve made significant investments in the Chicago River to make it the city’s next recreational frontier,” says Mayor Rahm Emanuel. The vision, created with the support of Friends of the Chicago River, Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning and many others, was based on feedback gathered from more than 6,000 Chicagoland residents that participated in more than 120 community events over the past year. MPC Director Josh Ellis says, “While the city and other government agencies lead on some of the recommended actions, we need residents and local stakeholders across the city to play a lead role in creating a future for our rivers that we can all be proud of.” People can get involved by joining a park advisory council or a volunteer stewardship group or visiting an area of the rivers to which they have never been. From Ping Tom Park to Calumet Fisheries, the Des Plaines River Trail and the Riverwalk, there are amazing places along our rivers today that we can look to as we plan for tomorrow. A $50 donation receives a T-shirt including one of three great rivers-themed designs. Call the Metropolitan Planning Council at 312-863-6020 or visit GreatRiversChicago.com.

ertsecoactionalertsecoactionalertsecoactio Clean Energy Incentive Program Gaining Supporters
S
upport for the Clean Energy Incentive Program (CEIP) was strong during the first and only U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) national hearing on the program this August in Chicago. More than 300 supporters attended the hearing and nearly half provided oral testimony in support of both the Clean Power Plan and this innovative program to advance renewable energy and energy efficiency. As part of the EPA Clean Power Plan, placing the nation’s first-ever limits on carbon pollution from existing power plants, the voluntary CEIP allows states to opt in to the program to be eligible for incentives to develop solar, wind, geothermal and hydroelectric projects. The program also doubles the incentives for states that develop energy efficiency or solar projects serving low-income communities. In February, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to put the Clean Power Plan on hold until current legal challenges are resolved; but that does not prevent states from moving forward with drafting state implementation plans or participating in the CEIP. As a Midwest energy policy analyst with the Union of Concerned Scientists, Jessica Collingsworth gave testimony: “I shared that in developing the CEIP, the EPA rightly recognized two fundamental challenges that need to be addressed in the equitable and effective implementation of the Clean Power Plan. First, we need to encourage near-term deployment of renewables to adequately cut emissions and limit a rush to natural gas, which has inherent economic and consumer risks and is still a fossil fuel. Second, we need to ensure that low-income communities who have historically borne a disproportionate burden of fossil fuel pollution and suffer chronic underinvestment in local clean energy and energy efficiency resources are prioritized for meaningful investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy resources.” CEIP benefits go only to states that act ahead of key deadlines, so it is in their interest to have a clean energy infrastructure in place to fully realize them when they take effect. T
o celebrate a 20-year legacy as the region’s leading conservation alliance, Chicago Wilderness is conducting One Home: A Campaign to Support our Species (ChicagoWilderness.org/20years), a fundraising effort through November 29 to support the health and habitat of 12 priority animal species in the region through CrowdRise. “This is the first time that anyone has launched a crowdfunded campaign of this scale to support wildlife in our region,” says Suzanne MalecMcKenna, executive director of Chicago Wilderness. Those interested in taking a more active role in fundraising can make it personal by becoming a team leader to reach a targeted group of supporters for a species. Team leaders receive a unique URL which they can distribute and use to track the funds raised for Chicago Wilderness. Being a team leader is fun, customizing all kinds of easy-to-use information for quick communiqués via emails, newsletters or social media. For example: “So glad you like the aquatic species. Each species was chosen based on a variety of criteria, from regional challenges to feasibility of having an impact to opportunities for outreach/community engagement.” Being a team leader is easy; after signing up, team leaders get a personalized link to the fundraising campaign and can name their team whatever they want. As a team leader for whatever species is chosen, the team’s name will be featured prominently with that species and shown in the overall page, as well. The coolest thing about
being a team leader is that they have access to the contact information of anyone that donates via their link, which is sure to be a much broader audience than the original list, as folks are encouraging others to share the information. That’s great for market research, communication support and more. The 12 priority species represent an array of wildlife of high conservation concern and those with habitat that requires critical support, such as the globally rare oak savanna. The campaign kicks off strategic conservation work across the region for the next five years: individuals can choose the species they prefer and contribute what they can, but funding will be distributed equally among the priority species to support conservation efforts. Lead partners include Audubon Great Lakes, The Field Museum, Illinois Natural History Survey, Lincoln Park Zoo, The Nature Conservancy Illinois Chapter, Openlands, Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, National Great Rivers Research and Education Center, Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. “With this coalition, we can make impressive and meaningful strides in the years ahead,” adds McKenna. Chicago Wilderness is a regional alliance promoting strategies to preserve, improve and expand nature and quality of life. In concert with more than 200 member organizations representing corporate, nonprofit and government interests, Chicago Wilderness is connecting leaders in conservation, health, business, science and beyond. Chicago Wilderness tackles challenging issues to ensure a resilient region. Building on a 20-year legacy of collaboration, the broad alliance of member organizations advance work in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan. We think that diamonds are very important, gold is very important, all these minerals are very important. We call them precious minerals, but they are all forms of the soil. But that part of this mineral that is on top, like it is the skin of the Earth, that is the most precious of the commons. ~Wangari Maathai (1940–2011)
Putting a Garden to Bed for the Winter by Joey and Holly Baird
T
he days are getting shorter and cooler, and the garden is showing signs of wanting to be put to rest. Many gardeners enjoy looking back to see what they have grown or what they will continue to produce for the next few months. Some are surely disappointed because they wish to garden yearround, but that is just not possible in the Midwest. We should always be aware of the next crop going in, such as planting garlic in the fall or the first crop in spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Either way, preparing the garden for winter correctly will save us time next season. The first step in putting the garden to bed is to harvest all of the remaining fruits and vegetables on the plants, from the smallest peppers and root crops to the leafy greens. Then remove and discard any diseased plants like tomatoes with blight, vine crops with powdery mildew and any other questionablelooking plants. Do not put these in with the compost; separating and trashing them is best because even the hottest backyard compost pile cannot kill spores on diseased plants. Now is
the time to take notes, photographs or videos of where the plants were located this growing season. Avoid planting the same family of plant in the same area two years in a row because that can promote disease and deplete vital nutrients that some plants take from the soil, while others put them back. To achieve minimal soil disturbance, do not till the garden in the fall. A rototiller can do structural damage to the soil web. Instead, use a garden fork in the spring and fall. This is a special tool with heavy, flat, metal tines designed to loosen the soil to do less damage, much like a broad fork. This is not a pitchfork or hay fork; their structure and purposes are different. Fluff the soil with the fork while pulling out weeds and aerating it. This is the best time to add some amendments to feed and build the soil. They may include partially broken-down plant- or animal-based compost, as well as coffee grounds and other fillers. The proper application of these amendments is to work them into the top two to four inches of soil to allow the microbes and
worms to finish the breakdown process over the winter. Other amendments such as fertilizer should not be added at this time because they will be ineffective and used up by spring; most fertilizer, even slow-release, will lose its potency after a few months. The most free and abundant resource available is leaves in the fall. Whether saving them over the winter to make leaf compost or applying them directly over the soil, leaves are nutrient-dense and beneficial for the garden. Tree roots go deep down into the earth, and all of those nutrients are circulated through the tree into the leaves, enhancing them to become exceedingly beneficial to the soil. About two feet of this leaf mulch over the top of the garden bed is good. The smaller the particles, the quicker they break down, so a leaf mulcher or lawn mower is handy, but not necessary, because the leaves can also be applied without mulching. In the spring, rake the leaves away, plant and then replace the leaves around the plant as a mulch. Putting a garden to bed can greatly reduce the overall amount of time needed in maintenance, from preparation to planting. This will also give us a good idea of what changes we can make in the next planting season. Joey and Holly Baird are the founders of The Wisconsin Vegetable Gardener, an online how-to resource for home gardeners. Born to Eat Wild Why Ancestral Diets Boost Health by Judith Fertig
I
n The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals, Michael Pollan surmised that we’d be healthier if we ate the way our great-grandparents did. It would mean sticking to regularly scheduled meals instead of impulsive snacking, having a meat or protein item comprise only a quarter of our plate, adding fresh vegetables and eliminating junk food. We must look further back than our immediate ancestors, counters Jo Robinson, a food journalist who surveyed more than 6,000 scientific research studies before writing her bestselling Eating on the Wild Side: The Missing Link to Optimum Health. She has also co-authored several other books, including The Omega Diet: The Lifesaving Nutritional Program Based on the Diet of the Island of Crete.
Narrowed Field of Foods
“Many believe we have dumbed down the nutrition in our food over the past 100 years,” says Robinson, who lives and gardens on Vashon Island, Washington. “Research shows we have been breeding out proteins and minerals and most importantly, antioxidants, for much longer.” She points out that the hunter-gatherer diet encompassed many wild foods that tasted more bitter, astringent, sour and earthy than the sweet blandness in today’s fruits and vegetables. Wild foods offered a wider variety of phytonutrients, but came at a cost—the time required to hunt and gather enough food for a day, let alone a season. “Then, 12,000 years ago, we had a better idea—gardening,” says Robinson. “We evolved to 20 varieties in a garden versus 150 in wild plants.” First, farmers chose sweet, starchy, mild-tasting, oil-rich foods such as figs, dates and olives. “We’re hard-wired to choose high-calorie foods because they’re directly connected to the pleasure centers of the brain,” she adds. 38

consciouseating
After that, the trend to grow sweeter-tasting, less nutritious plants snowballed. Robinson cites research that found adding one Golden Delicious apple to the daily diet of a small group of overweight men led to higher levels of undesirable low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglycerides due to its high-fructose content and low levels of antioxidants (International Journal of Preventive Medicine).
Wilder Options Even organic farming methods, in which the soil is naturally enriched, can’t return all those lost nutrients to our food. Rather than advocate that we return to eating wild foods, Robinson suggests finding wild equivalents. Even those that follow a paleo diet—presumably eaten by early humans and consisting chiefly of meat, fish, vegetables and fruit, excluding dairy, grain products and commercially processed items—could use further refinements in the produce they choose. She recommends specific varieties of fruits and vegetables and explains the benefits of “wild” foods such as meat, eggs and dairy from livestock and poultry fed on grass on her website, EatWild.com. We can make smarter choices, seeking wilder-type varieties of foods at the grocery store, farmers’ market and garden seed companies. In general, they are more vividly colored, especially from red to purple, and less sweet. Brightly colored fruits and vegetables indicate a botanical sunscreen the plant produces to protect itself from ultraviolet light and other external threats, notes Robinson; it’s an indication of a higher antioxidant activity. “Find as many purple foods as possible because they have anthocyanins, known to fight cancer and inflammation,” suggests Robinson. “The original carrot from Afghanistan is purple. It’s only been orange for the past 400 years when it was bred to salute the royal House of Orange, in the Netherlands.” According to Robinson, we can also prepare our foods in ways that maximize their phytonutrient content. Eat fresh-picked asparagus and broccoli immediately or their natural sugars and antioxidants disappear. Let chopped or pressed garlic sit for 10 minutes before using so its pungent allicin—the healthy compound that benefits our health—will increase. Tear fresh lettuce the day before eating and keep it fresh in a plastic bag with poked holes, to allow the stillliving lettuce to rally its healthy compounds as if its battered leaves were repelling an insect attack. This emerging science of polyphenols, the technical term for phytonutrients in our food, will be explosive, predicts this pioneering research-based author. “There’s a new study just about every month,” she finds. It can all lead toward breeding and growing more nutritious foods that are more readily accessible to everyone. Judith Fertig writes cookbooks and foodie fiction from Overland Park, KS (JudithFertig.com).

Autumn in a Jar Conserve
In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk and butter. It’s OK if the butter re-solidifies in clumps when you add it to the cold buttermilk.
Yield: 4 to 6 half-pint jars This recipe can be properly canned for longer shelf life or simply added to clean jars, kept refrigerated and used promptly. 8 cups apples, peeled and chopped 1½ cups sweet red wine 1 cup honey ½ cup sugar 1 lemon, juiced 2½ tsp cinnamon ½ cup walnuts, toasted and chopped If canning, prepare 4 to 6 half-pint jars in simmering water. Combine apples and wine in a large pot and simmer over high heat for about 15 minutes or until the apples are tender and the liquid has reduced. Mash the mixture to the preferred consistency; some apple chunks are fine, or blend as for apple sauce. Add the honey and sugar, let the jam cook on high around 220 degrees until it’s quite thick. When the jam has reached your desired consistency, remove the pot from the heat and stir in the lemon juice, cinnamon and nuts. If using within a few weeks, funnel into jars and refrigerate. If canning, funnel jam into jars leaving ½-inch headspace. Wipe rims, apply lids, screw on bands
Add the liquid to the dry ingredients and stir just until there are no large pockets of dry ingredients, no need to mix it together completely. Allow to rest for about 5 minutes.
and process in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes (start timer when the pot returns to a rolling boil).
While the batter is resting, heat a pan over medium heat. Generously butter the pan, then drop in 1/3-to ½-cup scoops of batter and gently spread to a round-ish shape.
Remove from water and allow to cool for 24 hours. Use within one year.
Apple Pancakes
To get even browning on the pancakes, once bubbles set in the pancake towards the middle of the pan, carefully slide a spatula under the pancake and rotate it to brown the other half of the bottom. When the bottom is nicely browned, flip the pancake, brown, and repeat the rotating.
Yield: about 10 medium-ish pancakes, enough for four people; and leftovers are great reheated in a toaster oven or toaster. 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup whole wheat or mix of whole grain flours 1 tsp baking powder ½ tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt 3 Tbsp sugar ¼ tsp cinnamon 11/3 cups diced apples (about 3 small to medium apples 2 eggs 2 cups buttermilk 4 Tbsp butter melted, plus additional for the pan

Making Peace With Our Bodies
A Conversation with Meryl Feldman of Blossom Within Coaching by Carrie Jackson
M
eryl Feldman is a mind-body coach and founder of Blossom Within Coaching. She works with women to have radiant and vibrant lives by helping them tap into their own abundant source of healing capabilities and intuitive wisdom.
motion”. They show up as physical sensations in the body, starting out very quiet and subtle, almost vibrational. When ignored, they get louder and louder, until screaming as a migraine, backache or some other pain or weakness in the body. The key here is to Meryl Feldman notice as soon as possible and as often as possible the What is the connection emotion as a physical sensation. This between emotional and emotional energy has much wisdom to share about what we are experiencing physical pain? and how to get relief. The healing begins Based on a theory by Dr. John Sarno, when we are honest with ourselves and the expert on mind-body healing and are willing to explore our inner emothe author of many books, including Healing Back Pain, the brain will cut off tional world. blood/oxygen flow to different parts of the body, causing painful symptoms in order to distract an individual from recognizing and feeling emotions that they are trying to avoid. In order to get relief from the pain, a person will go running around to different doctors and searching the Internet to get answers and diagnosis, when the healing is within their reach and within their own body. They just need to “feel to heal”. This is not to say at all that the pain is only in the mind. The pain is real and the symptoms are real. But the healing comes from turning inward, getting honest about one’s emotions— especially anger, fear and sadness, and allowing for emotional energy flow. But how to do this is the question, especially when so many of us have the habit of ignoring these emotions or getting stuck in them. Emotions are “energy in 40
How can we be more mindful in our approach to healing? Put your attention inward. Wiggle your toes, take a deep inhale/exhale, and notice what physical sensation is happening in your body. Does your stomach hurt? Is there a lump in your throat, a surge of heat welling up in your chest? Is your breathing shallower? Jaw clenched? Whatever the physical sensation is, just be aware of it and allow it for half a minute or longer. You can even put your hand on that part of your body to keep your focus on it. Breathe and know that you are safe in putting your attention on your body and feeling the emotional energy that is present. Allow that physical sensation to just exist in your awareness. This action enables emotional energy to flow and intuitive wisdom to be heard. You may get a “knowing” of which
Chicago www.NAChicago.com
emotion it is—anger, irritation, annoyance, rage, sadness, disappointment or hurt. The word is not as important as noticing the sensation, but may give you additional clarity in your awareness. As your attention remains inward on the bodily sensation, you may notice a change of the energy. My clients often share that one area of their body has pain or a sensation, and then after their attention has been on it, it morphs into another physical sensation in a different part of their body. For example, they may feel some tremoring in their right arm, and after I give them time to focus their attention there, they’ll share that the tremoring is gone, but that their stomach feels funny. This is their emotional energy flowing and shifting to be processed and give them body/soul wisdom. As part of the coaching process, we access those messages, as well.
How does emotional healing lead to overall health? When you allow your body’s emotional message to be heard, the recognized energy flows so it doesn’t get stuck as a physical pain later on. After this very physical allowing of emotional energy, your intuition opens up so that you can choose, from a place of higher wisdom, the action you want to take in a given situation. You will have been given the gift of awareness and clarity. This is true health. As opposed to fearing change and ignoring and suppressing the emotional messages our body is communicating to us, we are accessing it instead. The brain does not have to cause blood/oxygen restriction to any part of the body because in these actions we are showing it that we are not afraid of our emotions. No pain is necessary, no distraction is necessary. We are freeing ourselves from the suppression and pain cycle and living a more vibrant, healthy life. Feldman welcomes questions and offers a free, 20-minute connection. For more information, call 773-609-3770, email BlossomWithinCoaching@gmail.com or visit BlossomWithinCoaching.com. WALKING MEDITATION The Calming and Centering Effects of Labyrinths by Gina McGalliard
While many of us like to meditate, some can’t sit still. Walking a labyrinth provides an enticing alternative.
A
n archetypal labyrinth gently leads us in a circular path inward toward a center and then back out again. Found in ancient cultures from African, Celtic and Greek to Native American, they became especially popular fixtures in Medieval European churches; one of the most renowned is in France’s Chartres Cathedral. Depictions of labyrinths have been included in paintings, pottery, tapestries and in Hopi baskets as a sacred symbol of Mother Earth. Several American tribes saw the pattern as a medicine wheel. Celts may have regarded it as a never-ending knot or circle. While some of the oldest known
labyrinths decorate cave walls in Spain, today they grace diverse locations ranging from spas and wellness centers to parks, gardens, university campuses and even prisons. “Labyrinths can be outdoors or indoors. Permanent labyrinths may be made of stones, rocks, bricks or inlaid stones. Temporary labyrinths can be painted on grass or made with all sorts of things for a particular purpose or appropriate to a specific cause,” explains Diane Rudebock, Ed.D., resource vice president and research chair of the Labyrinth Society, in Trumansburg, New York. “Walking a labyrinth is useful for those that sometimes have a hard

time being outwardly still and drawing themselves inward. You must move your body, and because you’re focused on the path while you’re walking it, it’s easier to drop wholly into the journey and let go of all else,” says Anne Bull, of Veriditas, a Petaluma, California, nonprofit that supports new labyrinth designs to suit the spiritual needs of hospitals, schools and retreat centers. The group also sponsors a worldwide directory at LabyrinthLocator.com.
Individual Approaches
A labyrinth walk typically involves three stages. The first is for releasing extraneous thoughts on the way to the center. Upon arriving in the stillness of that point, the participant opens heart and mind to receive whatever message or wisdom is intended for them. The return path is the integration phase, to make a fresh insight our own. Participants should approach their walk in different ways: One may have a specific question or intention in mind; another may be open to whatever occurs during their meditation; yet another may repeat a meditative mantra. One might even choose to bypass the path entirely in order to sit contemplatively at its center. Unlike a maze, it’s impossible to lose our way with the circular path serving as a simple and reliable guide. Although scientific research on labyrinth meditation has been limited to participant questionnaires, future studies may incorporate the use of functional magnetic resonance imaging technology to measure brain activity and record what individuals experience. Labyrinths located in settings like hospitals and prisons lend themselves to such research, says Rudebock. As a Veriditas-certified labyrinth facilitator, she conducts workshops and observes, “Walks are unique to each individual
Above all, do not lose your desire to walk. Every day I walk myself into a state of well-being and walk away from every illness. I have walked myself into my best thoughts, and I know of no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it. ~Søren Kierkegaard 42

and may not produce uniform or replicable results.” At its core, the experience is about listening to our truest self, away from the cacophony of modern life. “I believe that the world needs places where our souls can be quiet,” remarks Jean Richardson, director of the Kirkridge Retreat and Study Center, in Bangor, Pennsylvania, which includes a seven-circuit labyrinth. “Retreat centers and labyrinths are places where we can listen to our inner heart, feel our inner calling and tap into our own divine nature. I think deep listening is not always valued in a world where we are rewarded for being busy and keeping our schedules full.”

Today, labyrinths—indoor, outdoor, natural, urban, secular and religious— are found in or near many communities. Following the lead of California’s Golden Door Spa, in Escondido, which pioneered the use of a labyrinth in a spa setting, many spas now incorporate them in their wellness or mindfulness programs. Labyrinthine invitations to a mindfulness practice are open to everyone. “A labyrinth can bridge all beliefs, faiths, religions and walks of life,” says Bull. “You can walk a labyrinth no matter what you believe. Benefits come in walking it with an open mind and open heart.”

Cat-astrophe How to Slim a Fat Feline
Dennis van de Water/Shutterstock.com
by Sandra Murphy
A
lmost 60 percent of America’s pet cats are overweight, according to a survey by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. Feline obesity can lead to joint pain, hinder self-grooming and make it harder to use the litter box, all resulting in fat cats being left at shelters by frustrated owners. Chubby kitties also are more prone to osteoarthritis, Type 2 diabetes mellitus, respiratory problems and non-allergic skin conditions. “Potential health problems make overweight cats harder to adopt,” says Deanna Schmidt, with the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, in Pittsburgh. “On Fat Cat Tuesdays, we waive the adoption fee for cats 14 pounds and over. We counsel adoptive families and follow up so that ongoing healthy eating and exercise continues to melt away the pounds.” Experts advise that a house cat should maintain the sleek, fluid motion of a jungle cat. Viewed from above, healthy cats have a distinct waistline, an inward curve between the rib cage and hips. Pick it up and step on the scale. The pet’s weight should comprise between six to 10 pounds of the total.
44
“The first time I saw healthy cats, I thought they looked small because I’d become used to seeing fat cats,” recalls Traci Pichette, founder of Pumeli tea and gift boxes, in St. Petersburg, Florida. She’s not alone in her assessment.
Suggested Solutions
While free-feeding dry food is easier for owners and allows a cat to snack at will, some take advantage and overeat, often from boredom. To help the transition from always-available dry food to mealtime wet food, use kibble as a special treat. Food puzzles, widely available online or in pet supply stores, will keep Kitty busy during the day. Homemade feeding puzzles work, too; put a small amount of kibble in a cardboard tube or small box, tape the end shut and randomly cut small holes in the sides. Kitty will have to roll the tube or fit a paw inside to retrieve a treat. “Free-feeding dry food is comparable to a constant supply of Fritos on our desk,” says Jackson Galaxy, author of Cat Daddy. “As far as the myth that dry food cleans teeth, I ask, do you floss with Melba toast? Dry food leaves plaque. A grain-free, wet food adds needed mois-

ture and fat to their diet. A cat’s teeth are designed to rip and tear, not crunch.” “Changing my cat’s food to an all-wet diet slimmed her down to a healthy weight. I hated the smell, but it made sense to me that dry food was just carbs,” says Pichette. “At first, she whined at not having food all the time, but got used to it, and now she can eat treats in moderation. The cool thing is we’re all enjoying her increased energy and playfulness.” Cats are obligate carnivores, which means their natural diet comprises 90 percent meat and 10 percent vegetable matter. A roaming cat’s native routine is to search for food, hunt, catch and eat, groom and nap. Because each catch is small, they eat frequently. “There’s still an ancestor cat inside domesticated felines, a ‘raw’ cat that wants to hunt for its food,” explains Galaxy. “We need to play into that thinking and feed at intervals; ideally, every five hours or so, or at least in the morning, after work and about an hourand-a-half before bedtime.” While the family’s morning and evening schedules mean just a quick scoop of food in the bowl, the third meal should be an interactive one. “A battery-operated toy or waving a laser light around is not play,” says Galaxy. “Interactive play is not texting with one hand and wiggling the fishing pole toy with the other. You have to get up and move to let the cat search for the toy, watch and wait, then pounce. It engages the animal mentally and physically and brings the raw cat to the surface. When you reach the point of diminishing returns, the pet is tired and it’s time for a meal.” His foundation improves lives of shelter animals, teaching staff to clicker train, entertain and exercise their cats to make them more adoptable. After an active day, the cat will be ready for bed, syncing its rhythm with the rest of the household. “A full play session satisfies natural instincts and prevents the cat from hunting your ankles as you sleep,” advises Galaxy. “It’s not a luxury to have a variety of toys; it’s a necessity for having a quality relationship with a healthy cat.” Connect with freelance writer Sandra Murphy at StLouisFreelanceWriter@ mindspring.com.

Tree-Mendous Love How Trees Care for Each Other by Melissa Breyer
F
rom learning to communicate to physically caring for each other, the secret lives of trees are wildly deep and complex. “They can count, learn and remember; nurse sick neighbors; warn each other of danger by sending electrical signals across a fungal network known as the ‘wood wide web’; and keep the ancient stumps of long-felled companions alive for centuries by feeding them a sugar solution through their roots,” reveals Peter Wohlleben, a German forest ranger and author of The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate— Discoveries from a Secret World, released in September. Upon seeing two soaring beeches in the forest, Wohlleben observes, “These trees are friends. See how the thick branches point away from each other? That’s so they don’t block their buddy’s light. Sometimes, pairs are so interconnected at the roots that when one tree dies, the other one dies, too.” Wohlleben is rekindling a re-imagination of trees even as many people consider their role is only to supply us with oxygen and wood. Using a mix of scientific research and his own observations from studying forestry and working in the forest since 1987, the man who speaks for the trees does so in decidedly anthropomorphic terms.
Chicago www.NAChicago.com
“Scientific language removes all the emotion, and people don’t understand it anymore. I use a human language. When I say, ‘Trees suckle their children,’ everyone knows immediately what I mean,” he says. After years of working for the state forestry administration in RhinelandPalatinate, and then as a forester managing 3,000 acres of woods near Cologne, he began to understand that contemporary practices were not serving the trees or those that depend on them very well. Artificially spacing out trees ensures that trees get more sunlight and grow faster, but naturalists report that trees exist less like individuals and more as communal beings. By working together in networks and sharing resources, they increase their resistance to potentially damaging influences. After researching alternative approaches, Wohlleben began implementing some revolutionary concepts. He replaced heavy machinery with horses, stopped using insecticides and let the woods become wilder. The pilot German forest plot went from losing money to posting a profit in two years. As Dr. Seuss’ tree-loving Lorax says, “I speak for the trees. I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues.” Melissa Breyer, of Brooklyn, NY, is the editor of Treehugger.com, from which this article was adapted.
