R CODE INFORMATION:
Welcome to our 28th annual bull sale!
Passion is the driving force behind what we do. Our passion for beef cattle, agriculture and customer service are the three reasons we continue to plan, breed and anticipate the future.
This sale has gained a great reputation of the place to come for high quality genetics. The greatest compliments that we consistently receive are from customers that tell us how they have been able to improve their calf crops with bulls they have purchased from us. Traits like fertility, desirable calving ease, soundness, foot quality, fleshing ability, longevity, carcass traits and pounds of production are areas of consistent focus. We have been consistent and stayed focused on our mission. Utilizing our forages more efficiently, emphasizing reproductive efficiencies and increasing pounds of production per cow as three of the areas of emphasis that we focus on in order to improve our profitability. It is becoming more and more important to do the little things to maximize production within our cow herds. Your selection of genetics to help you achieve these goals is what we are in business to do.
This is a tremendous set of bulls that we are very proud to offer. We continue to make breeding decisions and work with breeders that improve our genetic base that in turn benefit you, our customer. Our genetics continue to improve and we are passing that opportunity on to you. You will notice several sire groups of bulls selling as well as full brothers being offered. This is for your benefit. You may select half brothers or full brothers in order to help increase the consistency of your calf crop. The Angus, SimAngus and Simmental genetics offered here are second to none! We have grown these bulls on a high roughage forage based ration. All of the bulls have DNA data, ultrasound data, and are weighed, measured, and semen tested. After all of their yearling data is taken, the bulls are then placed on a high roughage maintenance ration. All of the bulls offered for sale will be guaranteed breeders. Every bull will qualify for the Phase One Tobacco money for both Kentucky and Tennessee and we will furnish the paperwork necessary to obtain those funds.
Harvey Mast does a fantastic job in the day to day management of our cattle operation. We are thankful for all that Harvey brings to Pleasant Hill Farms. A huge thank you to Heather and MaKinley for allowing Harvey to spend so much time with the cattle! He is a tremendous asset and is more than willing to help you with your selections. In addition, a big thank you to Rondall Gingrich for all that he does on a daily basis!
Thank you for your interest in our Angus, SimAngus and Simmental breeding programs. We are committed to providing the highest quality of beef cattle seedstock that will have the greatest value to our customers. Looking forward to seeing you on February 25th, 2023!

Semen INTEREST IN THE BULLS
We are retaining a 25% revenue sharing and semen interest in every bull. This means the bull is totally in your control in how you want to handle him, and you get 100% of the salvage value of the bull. Simply, we have the right to the retained share of semen sales revenue from the bull if at some time in the future semen sales become a possibility. If you sell the bull to another breeder, Pleasant Hill Farms retains the semen interest.
Realistically, it is unlikely that large amounts of semen will be sold from many bulls. However, the reason we are keeping interests in some bulls is that bulls are often “discovered” later in life, after they have proven themselves in the breeding pasture.
If you purchase a bull that we retain an interest in and you choose to collect some semen from that bull as an “insurance policy” for your own use, that semen is 100% yours. Pleasant Hill Farms may wish to collect semen from the bull, either for within herd use or to build a jointly owned semen bank for sale purposes. If you are not interested in collecting semen on the bull, Pleasant Hill Farms has the right to collect the bull for their own use and in that case will pay all collection expenses. Semen collection will be arranged at the convenience of the owner of the possession interest.
Sale day announcements and information updates on sale day will take precedent.
Pleasant Hill Farms GUARANTEE
We guarantee that all breeding cattle sold by Pleasant Hill Farms are fertile to the best of our knowledge. Each bull has passed a Breeding Soundness Evaluation. In the event of a problem, the buyer is responsible to return the bull to Pleasant Hill Farms. If the bull does not respond as a satisfactory breeder, the buyer will have the option of a satisfactory replacement (if available), or the issue of a credit equal to the bull’s purchase price minus the salvage value received for that bull. All credit is good for one year from the sale date. We simply ask that you contact us concerning any issues.
This is not a life insurance policy. We will not replace a dead animal if it is killed or dies for any reason. We expect normal care to be exercised toward these animals and that particularly the yearling bulls not be allowed to get too thin. This guarantee is in addition to the Suggested Sale Terms and Conditions of the American Angus Association and the American Simmental Association, which also apply.

explanation OF EPDS
EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCE (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.
PRODUCTION
CALVING EASE DIRECT (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.
BIRTH WEIGHT (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
WEANING WEIGHT (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
YEARLING WEIGHT (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
CARCASS
MARBLING (MARB), is expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
RIBEYE AREA (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
FAT THICKNESS (FAT), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
MATERNAL
MATERNAL MILK (MILK), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.
COW ENERGY VALUE ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow er year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals. Components for computing $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.
$VALUE INDEXES
$Value Indexes, reported in dollars per head, are multi-trait selection indexes where a higher value suggests more profit. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires if sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.
MATERNAL WEANED CALF VALUE ($M), an index expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning. $M is built off of a self-replacing herd model where commercial cattlemen replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% in subsequent generations. Remaining cull females and all male progeny are sold as feeder calves. Increased selection pressure on $M aims to decrease overall mature cow size and improve foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s production.
WEANED CALF VALUE ($W), an index expressed in dollars per head, provides the expected difference in future progeny preweaning performance from birth to weaning. $W assumes that producers retain 20% of their female progeny for replacements and sell the rest of their cull female and male progeny as feeder calves. Over time, increased selection pressure on $W will increase weaning and maternal milk traits while also continuing to increase mature cow size.
FEEDLOT VALUE ($F), an index expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes commercial producers will retain ownership of cattle through the feedlot phase and sell fed cattle on a carcass weight basis with no considerations of premiums or discounts for quality and yield grade.
GRID VALUE ($G), an index expressed in dollars per carcass, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit, including quality and yield grade attributes, compared to progeny of other sires.
BEEF VALUE ($B), an index expressed in dollars per carcass, facilitates simultaneous multi-trait genetic selection for feedlot and carcass merit. $B represents the expected average differences in the progeny postweaning performance and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. This index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase and market these animals on a quality-based carcass grid.
COMBINED VALUE ($C), an index expressed in dollars per head, includes all traits that make up both $M and $B with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and eventually sell them on a qualitybased carcass merit grid.

Overview
Welcome to the Pleasant Hill Early March Madness Bull and Heifer Sale. I think you will agree that the Pleasant Hill crew has put together a powerful set of cattle for your consideration. As the consulting nutritionist for Pleasant Hill and Performance Feeds, I strive to develop optimal nutrition and management programs to match and express the genetic potential of the cattle while giving special attention to safeguarding soundness and reproductive longevity.
Nutritional Philosophy
The nutritional treatment of breeding stock from conception to breeding can have a profound effect on their lifetime potential. Nutritional influences on future health and productivity have been traced as far back as early embryonic development; a concept termed “fetal programming”. That is why we focus not only on the nutrient requirements of the cow throughout her life cycle but also the nutritional factors that affect gene expression of economically important traits in the developing calf. From conception to turnout, we focus on expressing the genetic potential of the cattle without compromising structural soundness and breeding performance.
Bull and Heifer Development
Pleasant Hill bulls and heifers have been developed in a large-paddock environment to provide abundant exercise to promote structural soundness and athleticism. Nutritionally, they were developed on high-roughage rations with particular attention given to optimal protein, energy, vitamin and trace mineral supplementation to ensure proper reproductive development and structural longevity. We think that you will agree that our nutritional and management philosophies have produced an exceptional set of bulls and heifers that are ready to go to work for you. Buy with confidence!
