How to stand out and make a difference From north to south around the island of Gotland are nine stores that together form Coop Gotland. To them, it is important to focus on local growers and farmers. Promoting products that are good for both customers and the local environment is equally important to them. Which is why at Coop Gotland they usually say they aim to be a force for good in everyday life. In short, they want to be the best at the things that matter and that genuinely make a difference. Whether this is Gotland mineral water and bread or a locally promoted rock festival.

Explore the Outdoors!
Many people travel to Gotland to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Although many are tempted to visit in summertime, Gotland has something to offer all year around. So, what makes the nature on Gotland so unique? Part of the answer may be the great location in the middle of the Baltic sea, the mild climate and the stunning limestone formations. Also attracting many visitors is the biodiversity of the island which is well-preserved due to a long history of small-scale farming and forestry. It is easy to find a favourite spot in one of Gotland’s 141 nature reserves. Informative signs on the uniqueness of each reserve can be found on location. The signs also provide information about restrictions that apply within the reserve, which we kindly ask that you respect to ensure the preservation of the habitat. If you explore Gotland by car or van it may be tempting to drive off-road to reach a secluded spot. However, according to the law for off-road driving this is strictly forbidden. The land is extremely delicate so please follow the signs in nature reserves and designated roads when driving on the island. For those who plan to enjoy the island in a motorhome or caravan it is useful to know that the beaches on Gotland are protected
by the Beach Protection Environment Act which includes strict regulation on what may be built, as well as rules for parking motorhomes and caravans. This unique Act ensures that the coastline and beaches are accessible to everyone. We hope that you have a fantastic stay on beautiful Gotland!

UNDER THE STREETS OF VISBY HIDDEN AND MYSTERIOUS – HOME TO COUNTLESS SECRETS
Deep under the streets of Visby is a hidden world full of secrets. “There is a lot of mythology around the cobbled streets of Visby, some is tied to the buildings, some is tied to the Dominican or Franciscan monks. There are legends about underground passages from the ruins of St Catherine down to where the restaurant Munkkällaren is located today,” says Lars Kruthof of Gotland Museum.

Under the restaurant in Ryska Gården on Stora Torget, graves, skeletons and plenty of unanswered questions have been found. Excavations have discovered walls, column bases and graves that are believed to be part of the ruin of a Russian Medieval church. A Russian farm is also believed to have existed close by, which explains why the location has been given the name Ryska Gården, which means Russian Farm in Swedish. The hidden Russian Church is open to guided groups. Rumours of underground passages used by monks have been circulating throughout the ages - it is said they were popular among monks who wanted to sneak out and do things that monks were not supposed to do. Visby’s exciting history has long been the subject of various performances and is a large part of Visby as a World Heritage Site. A myth is a myth, but is there any truth in the stories about hidden underground passages? “Yes, absolutely! But most often they are waterways under the city which were thought to be much older than they actually are – it’s been found that they are from the 18th and 19th centuries,” says Per Widerström who is an archaeologist at Gotland Museum. What do underground latrine chambers and passages tell us? “Often they tell us what they were most recently used for. But if we dig down to the very bottom of a latrine chamber we can find really old artefacts such as seals, shoes and wooden plates. They weren’t only used as latrines, I would rather call them warm composts,” he says. No one sorted their rubbish back then, men in monasteries often led double lives and wealthy monasteries were not any different. And tales of underground rooms have always needed to be explained to be understood. “This is particularly obvious in Visby. These secret rooms and passages tell us a story of a city that was incredibly well organised. Many of the tunnels were planned before the buildings were erected. There isn’t another city in the world that was so well planned,” says Widerström.
The streets of Visby cover a hidden world with a large underground system of tunnels and passages. Water that ran down the city’s slopes travelled through canals and pipes out to sea. The old grammar school St Hansskola has a trapdoor in the floor that leads down to passages that are several hundred metres long. On the main square, Stora Torget, by the artwork “Glömskans Bänk”, there is a stone under which is the town hall’s old latrine chamber. Under the floor of the restaurant Munkkällaren, there is a latrine and refuse chamber. You can climb right down into it. Around the area where Kulturskolan is located now, it is said that daughters living there in the 1700s searched for an underground passage that started in their cellar and came up at Galgberget. Hidden and mysterious underground, but at street level there is more order: “Look at all the streets, they are the same all over the city. Someone decided that they should look exactly alike. When the town was raised, they decided to do it for the whole town, someone decided that now we will have streets, that they would look like this – and that they should be made of limestone cobbles,” says Widerström. So – there seems to have been a town planning office in Visby even back then. And a water system built using Roman technology brought to Visby by Roman monks. Was it a German feel for order and structure that prevailed? “Or a Gotland feel for it,” says Widerström with a smile. Visby’s underworld is divided into sections with sewage canals and water pipes designed to create their own pressure. Archaeological finds in cavities, corridors and passages under Visby have supplied some answers but also opened things up for speculation. The stone buildings are harder to date, but archaeologists know that the large, high water canals under Visby are mostly dated back to the 19th century. So they aren’t as old as previously thought. “The myths I come across most often are about how someone’s neighbour was out digging in the garden when suddenly their shovel disappeared down a hole. I think a lot of these stories are due to the hundreds of latrine chambers under Visby,” says Widerström. In the main square there is a well with a limestone bottom, on top of it pine branches were found that were used to filter away the dirt. The well was most likely from the 13th or 14th century. Centuries of culture keep these stories alive today. “Before each busy guiding season there are always two or three journalists who write articles about the passages under Visby. There is a strong interest in them,” says Lars Kruthof. 7

Odds Guld – jewelry forför lifelivet! smycken
“Our latest collection is called Nature and as the name suggests all the designs have been inspired by nature” André Magnusson
Most people associate Odds Guld with our own historical jewellery, which we are very proud of. For many, owning a piece from this collection is an absolute must. But our workshop is constantly producing new designs as well. Our latest collection is called Nature. Nature Made by hand in our own workshop. Designed by André, inspired by nature.
For goldsmith and owner André, jewellery design is something that he gives a lot of time and thought, and his Nature collection was in the design phase for years before any pieces were actually made. Today there is a whole collection of designs based on nature. Their asymmetric designs appeal to many and are an interesting contrast to traditional Scandinavian design. In addition to working with our own collections, we are very happy to help with adjustments and repairs according to your needs. Odds Guld was founded on Södra Kyrkogatan in Visby in 1968 by Odd Magnusson. In 1984, the business moved to Södertorg. Since Odd’s son André took over the company in 2009, a lot has happened. New display cases have been brought in, the premises have been renovated and the number well-known brands being stocked has increased. Today you can find both classic pieces from our own collections and from other high profile brands, plus much more. We have something for every taste and occasion.

VISBY TOWN WALL
10
The Visby Town Wall, that has a history of keeping out farmers, the Danish and others who didn’t belong in the wealthy town, is now attracting people from all over the world. It has become a well-recognised silhouette and powerful monument that is an important element of the World Heritage Hanseatic Town of Visby. A walk along the 3.44 km-long wall will take you past the 27 remaining towers of the original 29. Be awed by the Maiden Tower, the Love Gate and Tall Lisa. Northern Europe’s best-preserved town wall is incredibly beautiful and thought provoking.

2. The Love gate
The Gunpowder Tower 1 Kruttornet. The oldest tower in the wall. Originally a fortified tower in a little castle overlooking what was the harbour but is now Almedalen Park. During the 18th century the tower was used as a gunpowder store. The Love Gate 2 Kärleksporten. Between the sun setting over the sea and the Botanical Gardens lies the gate where thousands of kisses have been exchanged over the years. In Medieval times, ropes were tarred here, and tar in Swedish (tjär) sounds a little like the beginning of the word for love (kärlek). Hence the name. The Maiden Tower 3 Jungfrutornet. Legend has it that the maiden who betrayed the town by letting in the Danish King Valdemar IV was later immured in the walls of this tower. This story is actually untrue, it is more likely that the name comes from a unit of measurement known as jungfru (maiden). The tower was used as a prison for a period. The Silver Cap 4 Silverhättan. The old Sentry Walk has been restored and opened up, making it possible to walk between the Silver Cap and the Snäckgärd’s Gate, which is the wall’s youngest tower. The Teutonic Knights built this north-facing tower during their period of rule between 1398 and 1408. The Snäckgård’s Gate 5 Snäckgärdsporten. Recently, a walkway was built from the inside of Silver Cap/Kames where you can go up in Snäckgärd’s Tower and see how it felt to be a defender of Visby’s fate.
Amazing views for those who aren’t afraid of heights. The Lübeck Breach 6 Lübeckerbräschen. It is said that this is where Lübeck and Hansan broke through the wall and drove away pirate Sören Norrby, who was based in Visborg Castle. The wall had a small tower here that pulled down this part of the wall when it collapsed. The Saint George Gate 7 S:t Göransporten. The gate was built to serve St. George’s Hospital, which was a large Medieval complex with a church and a hospital for lepers. In the beginning of the 1700s, the gate was used to get to the old hospital area. Tall Lisa 8 Långa Lisa. The tower has retained its original name since it was built. During an examination of the tower in 1901, a number of catapult stones were found in the niches on the upper floors. They belonged to the tower’s arsenal. With its six stories, this is the wall’s highest tower. The North Gate 9 Norderport. One of the oldest towers, perhaps dating back to 1280, and now open for traffic. During times of unrest, the gate’s wooden doors were reinforced with a portcullis. It wasn’t easy to get through in those days. The Coin House 10 Mynthuset. The coin house is most likely older than the actual wall. No coins have been found here, but it is thought that the building was originally the customs office.
The Well Gate 11 Brunnsporten. Access to water was short and the town’s few wells were located up on Klinten. In 1863, a new well was dug in the East Trenches outside the wall. At the same time this gate was constructed giving town residents access to the well. The Dalman Tower 12 Dalmansporten. An approximately 17-metre high tower that was used for navigation, and later as a granery. It has undergone multiple renovations over time. The East Gate 13 Österport. The only big opening through Klinten and into the town, a five-story tower was built over the old gate. Two 25-metre-long parallel walls were built out from the city wall on an angle, that together with the moat, gate and sentries provided effective protection. Today the gate is open for foot traffic only. The School Gate 14 Skolporten. At the end of the 1800s, a gate was built in the wall giving students living within easy access to a newly built primary school. Today the gate is open for cars. The Kajsar Tower 15 Kajsarporten. The first full-length tower, it is square shaped and the majority of its area is outside the wall. Thick walls and an impressive height. The Kajsar Tower has served as a prison, but was closed when it was seen to be too primitive even by the hard prison guards of the time. Today there is a prison museum in the tower.
The Valdemar’s Wall 16 Valdemarsmuren. According to legend, this was where Valdemar’s army broke the wall down, marched into the town and plundered Visby in 1362. Who knows? Maybe this is exactly what happened. The South Gate 17 Söderport. The South Gate is located in the corner where the southern and eastern sections of the wall meet. It has a room with a ceiling supported by a groin vault and two niches. Increased traffic through the gate led to the actual gate doors being removed. The main road south starts here. The Sconce Gate 18 Skansporten. Around 1721, people started fearing the arrival of the Russians. They needed a better fort and the adjacent sconce Skansen Havsfrun was built. The passage was opened in 1879 to allow horse-drawn artillery through. Visborg Castle 19 Visborgs slott. In 1411 this large, impressive fortress was built. It was used for a very long time, but was destroyed when the Danish invaded in 1679. You can find a model replica in Slottsparken. The Small Beach Gate 20 Lilla Strandporten. When the old harbour was located here, this was the gate to a square with a marketplace, the town hall and the stock exchange. The Fisherman’s Gate 21 Fiskarporten. You are now back at the Gunpowder Tower where you started. This gate most likely led to a small fishing base close to the harbour.

VISBY´S CHURCH RUINS They are unique, they are beautiful and they are evidence of the period when Visby was a wealthy and powerful medieval city. Most of the church ruins in Visby date back to the beginning of the 13th century, but they differ in their architecture and the functions they served. Some were parish churches, others were hospital churches. For those interested in learning more about them, there are a number of guided city walks available and all the ruins have signs with plenty of information about their history. St. Catherine’s ruin Visby Map 30 Also known as the Church of St. Karin, it is a majestic ruin overlooking the Visby Town Square. The “new” church was a central meeting point in the town and was completed in 1250 with a market square situated right in front of it.
a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It dates back to 1227 and was originally part of the Dominican monastery. In more recent times, the roof has been glassed in and the floor paved with beautiful limestone. It is often used to host concerts and is referred to as a “Culthedral”.
St. Peter and St. Hans’ ruin 31 Both built in the 13th century, they are joined together to form a single complex. St. Hans is one of Visby’s oldest stone churches and is said to be located over a sacred pagan sacrificial site. During archaeological excavations, a gravestone with an inscription from 1070 was found. Today the St. Hans ruin is home to a popular café.
St. George’s ruin 34 A church and hospital for lepers. To protect Visby from the infected, it was built outside the city walls, and today is located just above Visby’s modern hospital. Not open to the public, but well worth a look from the outside.
St. Nicholas’ ruin 32 The Church of St. Nicholas is one of the primary reasons for Visby being listed as
12
St. Olaf’s ruin 36 Beautifully situated in the Botanical Gardens, covered by impressively lush ivy. Built around 1240 as a German parish church in the city’s northern parish, to replace Saint Nicholas that was
taken over by the Dominican Order. Abandoned after the Reformation. St. Gertrud’s ruin 37 St. Gertrud’s chapel was a nunnery in the 15th century, most likely an annex to the St. Nicholas convent that was located close by. St. Gertrud was the patron saint of gardeners and travellers, and also the protectress against rats, which was good for those who had large grain houses. The chapel was destroyed during the Lübeck invasion of Visby on May 12, 1525. The Holy Spirit’s ruin 38 With its octagonal, two-storied nave and a protruding choir, it is a church of uncertain identity – a chapel for the Danish St. Knuts Gille or was it St. Jacob’s church? The work of the Holy Spirit only came after the Reformation.
St. Trinitatis’ ruin 39 Often called Drotten. Built around 1240 as a parish church for Germans, rebuilt and renovated in the later part of the Middle Ages. Abandoned in 1528 when the bourgeoisie started to take “ransoms” from the church’s inventories. A statue of Christopher Polhem, inventor and industrialist referred to as ”the father of Swedish mechanics”, is located close by the Church of St. Laurentius’ ruin. St. Clement’s ruin 40 Most likely built at the same time as St. Hans, about 1060, when Visby was divided into two parishes. The Church of St. Clement became the church for the northern parish. Impressive arches and columns create a special atmosphere in the ruins. This is one of the oldest churches in Visby.

Visby Cathedral, (S.t Maria Domkyrka) 50 Visby Cathedral is impressive in its beauty and size and is considered a living cultural treasure. The cathedral was built by and for German traders in the 12th and 13th centuries. Like Gotland itself, it is a fantastic place to visit whatever the season. It’s open for services all year round but during the summer months it is particularly busy. Tourists, summer guests, followers of the Medieval Festival and many others can be seen visiting the cathedral. The beautiful Baroque altar depicts how Adam and Eve were run out of paradise. The high

altar, made of painted sandstone from Burgsvik, was fitted in 1682. Since 1911 there is also an altar in the side aisle of the cathedral. The baptismal font in red and grey Gotland limestone has been dated back to the year 1240. The cathedral was built from fine-grained limestone sourced from a quarry just outside Visby. It is a three-aisled rectangular
basilica, with two narrow towers in the east and a larger tower in the west. The eastern gable is right at the foot of the steep hill behind the cathedral. Two chapels have been added to the main building. The larger chapel on the south side is where the beautiful main entrance is located. Visby Cathedral was referred to as “The Church of Our Lady” in Medieval times.

GOTLAND’S SEA STACKS FOSSILISED MEMORIES THAT CAN BE EXPERIENCED TODAY
You’ll hear the locals calling them ‘raukar’ and few natural phenomena are so strongly associated with Gotland’s landscape as these beautiful limestone sculptures. They stand magnificently along the entire coastline from Fårö in the north to Hoburgen in the south. The largest area of sea stacks can be found at Digerhuvud on Fårö along a 3.5 km stretch of coastline on the northwest part of the island.
Asunden I6 You can’t get all the way out to the coast by car, but those who make the effort to walk the last bit are rewarded with a lovely nature reserve and a beautiful sea stack area. Not to mention grazing sheep and nesting birds. Bogeklinten H7 These ’raukar’ are not where you’d expect them to be. If you turn off the road between Slite and Visby towards Gothem, you will find a large area of limestone stacks up on dry land. Some of them, below Bogeklinten (or Klinteklinten), are up to eight metres high.
20
Digerhuvud, Fårö L1 This is not only Gotland’s, but also Sweden’s, largest area of sea stacks. More than 100 stacks are lined up along the 3.5 km stretch of coastline along the northwest coast of the island of Fårö. The stony giants are perched right on the edge of the deep blue sea and swimming here is not recommended. A lovely barbeque dinner at one of the public barbeques areas, on the other hand, is. This gives ”fine dining” a new meaning. We recommend that you take your time and watch the sun set behind the ‘raukar’ for a memorable evening.
Folhammar H12 Just north of holiday paradise Ljugarn, the waves beat in on this beautiful area of sea stacks. The ‘raukar’ are plentiful and there are barbeque areas and a lovely walking path that takes you there from the car park. Perfect for wheelchairs and strollers. Gamle Hamn, Fårö L2 The sea stack known as “the dog” or “the coffee pot” is the one you will most frequently see on postcards. It rises out of the sea in the nature reserve Gamle Hamn – another great place to experience a beautiful sunset.
Hammarshage hällar D19 South Gotland has a whole lot of sea stacks to discover. Between Vändburg and Holmhällar you will find the Hammarshage rocky shoreline. The ‘raukar’ are in focus here in this beautiful area that breathes the essence of Gotland. Hideviken I6 If you drive towards Hellvi and turn right towards Hide, you will find yet another area of sea stacks located on a low cliff along the Hideviken coastline. You can park your car at the Majstregården café and restaurant, which is close by. Holmhällar D20 A classic on the island, Holmhällar can be found just south of Hammarshage. In a sandy landscape on a cape, there is a really beautiful sandy beach right next to the sea stacks. Just out to sea is the small island of Heligholmen, a bird shelter area with access prohibited March 15 to June 30.
Husken K5 Enjoy the wonderful view. The little peninsular of Husken north of Valleviken has sea stacks rising up like big mushrooms from the earth. You need a park and display parking ticket to use the car park. Jungfrun F4 Standing at 27 metres tall, Gotland’s highest sea stack is Jungfrun (The Maiden). You can see her clearly from the old fishing village of Lickershamn and visit her via a lovely walk through the forest along the cliff tops. A perfect place for a picnic and a popular place for weddings
as well. According to legend, the Maiden got her name from a love story that took place over 1000 years ago. Kyllaj J5 Here there is a cultural heritage site with old limestone kilns, a lovely little harbour and a large area of sea stacks. You’ll see it right before you get to the harbour. Further out on the point, by Lörje’s small harbour, you will find even more sea stacks. Langhammars, Fårö M1 This is where you will find some of the island’s most photographed sea stacks.
They are by a barren stony slope and down by the water are a number of “raukar” that are close to 10 metres high. Lergrav K5 On a beautiful hill up above Lergrav’s old fishing village, you will find a beautiful area of limestone stacks. Among them is the impressive Lergravsporten (The Lergrav Gate), but there are plenty more. In the area you will also find remnants from working with the limestone in the area, including a field kiln that is over 100 years old. It is also a great place to watch the sun rise.

ISLANDS AROUND THE ISLAND FANTASTIC TO VISIT AND IMPORTANT FOR SEA SAFETY
There are a number of small islands worth visiting off the coast of Gotland. They have been of significant importance through the years with their lighthouses guiding sea traffic, as grazing land for sheep and even as military outposts. Some of them are isolated while others offer peaceful, quiet walks on deserted white sandy beaches.
Asunden I6 Barren landscape, one of Gotland’s most beautiful areas of sea stacks with particularly tall examples here on this little island off the coast of Slite. Rocky and unwelcoming stony shores with lots of fossils in the wetlands and grazing sheep. Two coastal artillery canons, and rich bird and plant life. Bungeör L4 An isolated world between Bungenäs and Fårö. Thirteen hectares of deserted stony beaches and green vegetation. A unique and beautiful cultural heritage area. Coastal pilot house from the 1850s, rebuilt in 1938. On the far point is a lighthouse from where you can see Bungenäs and over to Fårö. Enholmen I6 Was once a military outpost for the Swedish Armed Forces. The first fort

here was built in the 17th century. Two defence posts were built during the Crimean War, and the island was finally demilitarised in 2011. Circumference of about two kilometres. The boat trip from Slite takes about 10 minutes, or you can rent a kayak. Located in the small Slite archipelago. Furilden K5 Really a peninsular off the north-east coast, attached to the main island at Lergrav. The limestone industry has left its mark on the island and traces of quarries can be seen in the barren landscape made up of forest, hills, cliffs, sea stacks and both sandy and stony beaches. The old quarry buildings have been converted into a hotel and restaurant. Fårö K-N, 1-4 Skalasand has the biggest waves,
Digerhuvud is Sweden’s largest area of sea stacks. Dämbaskogen’s nature and culture trail and Ulla Hau are definitely worth a visit. As are the Bergman Center, Helgumannen old fishing village and the Ryssnäs nature reserve. Some of Sweden’s best sandy beaches can be found on Fårö – Sudersand, Norsta Auren and Ekeviken all have beautiful fine white sand. Gotska Sandön I-J, 1-2 Can be reached by boat from Fårösund (2.15 hours) or from Nynäshamn on the Swedish mainland (3.20 hours). Accommodation available but must be booked in advance. One of Sweden’s oldest national parks. 3 600 hectares, 30 kilometres of sandy beaches, 60 kilometres of hiking trails, pine forests, sand dunes and rarely seen birds. Säludden is worth a visit, as is Gamla
Gården for those interested in cultural history. Hojskär J6 South of Ytterholmen in the Slite archipelago. An islet that was previously a military protection area but since the 1990s has been available for the country administration board. Grunnet I6 Located east of Enholmen in the Slite archipelago. Previously a protected military area, now a nature reserve. Heligholmen D20 Less than 12 hectares in size, popular among divers. Bird protection area with no visitors allowed from March 15 – June 30. The Laus Holmar Islands H13-14 Rich birdlife with nesting baldfaced geese and colonies of cormorants. Nature reserve, Natura 2000. Located three kilometres southeast of Ljugarn’s harbour, the three islands of Skarpholmen, Gräsholmen and Storholmen make up the Laus Holmar Islands. Lilla Karlsö A13 About 20 minutes by boat from Klintehamn. Take a daytrip or stay overnight in small beach cabins. Enjoy the smell of thyme from the moors and the sound of birds from the bird colonies. Sea stacks, caves and fossils. Seals can often be seen on some of the tiny islets around the island. Gotland sheep graze freely. Guided tours available.
Majgu I6 Low sea stacks on some of the beaches, and fossils millions of years old. Untouched and well preserved nature. The island is 600 metres long and 400 metres wide. Located off the coast of Slite. Skenholmen K4-5 Low-lying, primarily treeless, grazed by sheep, 256 hectares. Rich birdlife with nesting grey geese, eider ducks, pied avocets, stints, ruffs and golden plovers. In the winter, sea eagles can also be seen. No visiting the island from March 15 – July 15. St. Olofsholm and Ytterholmen J6 In the south and east, the island slopes gently into the sea. In the north and west its coastline is made up of steep cliffs. St. Olofsholm in Hellvi has a beautiful sea stack area, about 600
metres long and 300 metres wide, reaching 15 metres above sea level at its highest point. Smooth rocky shorelines. A few tall sea stacks to admire. Stora Karlsö A13 You can use the mooring facilities on Stora Karlsö if you have talked to the supervisor first. Mooring at the jetty on the eastern side of the island, where the tour boats go, is permitted between 17.00 and 10.00. On the west you can moor whenever you’d like as long as there is space. Drop your anchor only where instructed, there are cables on the sea floor that can be damaged. Restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Accommodation with a really good hostel standard but it has to be booked in advance. Västergarn’s Utholme B11 Nature reserve known for its rich bird
life with nesting grey geese, velvet scoters, shelducks, waders, common redshanks, sandpipers and Eurasian curlews. Low and flat, 55 hectares, off the coast from Kronholmen and Västergarn’s harbour. Sheep graze the island, which is lush with grass. The island’s only trees are two ash trees. No visitors allowed from March 15 – June 30. Östergarnsholm K11 Treeless. Completely covered in bare limestone soil. Rich birdlife, four lighthouses, 200 hectares. Sheep are grazed here in the summer. Seals commonly seen basking in the sun. Four kilometres east of Herrvik’s harbour off the coast of east Gotland. Boat trips to the island are dependant on good weather as there is no harbour. Exploring the island from a kayak is therefore a nice alternative.

The Coffee Pot L1 In the nature reserve Gamle Hamn on the northwest coast of the island of Fårö, by Lautervik, you can find one of Gotland’s most characteristic limestone sea stacks right on the sea’s edge. The “Coffee Pot” or “Dog” easily catches the eye among the other stacks. During the early Middle Ages, Gamle Hamn was an important commercial harbour. The ruins of St Olof’s Church can be found just south of the harbour. Close to the large field of sea stacks is a Viking burial ground.

LIGHTHOUSES SHINING LIFESAVERS ALONG GOTLAND’S COAST
A Gotland lighthouse can be painted in stripes, clad in wooden planks, be black, white or red – and save the lives of fishermen and seafarers. Over the centuries they have been the targets of countless attacks, by both weather and wind but also by the Swedish Maritime Administration who would like to reduce their number. Committed locas and volunteers has saved the lighthouses.

Located in a military special protection area, the lighthouse is owned by the National Fortifications Administration. A 11.3-meter-high white lighthouse. Gotska Sandön I1 Built on an iron frame on the drifting sand dunes. The lighthouse is on the island’s northwest point, in the forest. A 23.8-metre-high octagonal tower, clad with wooden planks. Its white top can be seen above the treetops. Accommodation is
available in the old lighthouse keepers’ cottages. Hallshuk H2 As far as you can go out on Hamnberget in the bay Kappelshamnsviken, east of the fishing base, you will find a lighthouse next to the old lighthouse keeper’s house. The lighthouse was built in 1891. It is five metres high and is positioned 32.5 metres above sea level. It was modernised in 1931 when it was rebuilt as an octagonal lantern house of iron on a concrete foundation. Heligholmen D20 Beautifully positioned out on a bird protection reserve outside Holmhällar on southern Gotland, this lighthouse is white and has a 9.4-metre-high tower. A so-called sector light, powered by solar panels and batteries. Built in 1913.
Hoburg B20 Located on Gotland’s southern tip, next to the famous limestone sea stack Hoburgsgubben. A 21.7-metre-high white tower in limestone with a black roof, 36 metres above sea level, built in 1846. A small collection of houses and outhouses surrounds it. Open to visitors in the summer. När H15 An attractive red and white striped lighthouse 16 metres high on the southern side of the barren point. När’s lighthouse was finished in 1872 to replace the beacon out on the tip of Närsholmen. A notable state building. Stenkyrkehuk E4 A 15-meter-high white lighthouse set in pine and spruce forest, 27 metres above sea level on the cliffs. Barren and exposed beach, no harbour. Built in
1885 to help seafarers travelling from the south. Before this, Visby harbour lighthouse was the only lighthouse on the west coast after Hoburg Lighthouse on the island’s southern tip. Stora Karlsö A13 A 18-metre-high lighthouse positioned 38 metres above sea level on the western side of the island, on the socalled lighthouse plateau. Built in 1886, automated in 1974. The lighthouse has been tastefully built together with an attractive house where accommodation is available. Östergarn K11-J11 The old lighthouse on Östergarnsholm is the first modern lighthouse that was built on Gotland, and the second of its kind in Sweden. Lit for the first time on September 1, 1818. The newer western lighthouse was built 1919.

ANCIENT SITES OF INTEREST GOTLAND’S CULTURAL HISTORY HIGHLIGHTS
Stone ship graves and other burial sites, ruins and cairns, rock drawings and stone monuments that tell us about how our forefathers lived and died. Some are more impressive than others, Visby’s City Wall is the obvious jewel in the crown, but the stone tower in Rute and the stone ship grave in Fröjel get the imagination going as well. Everywhere you look, evidence of a rich cultural history can be seen on Gotland.
Digerrojr G13 Gålrum’s burial grounds consist of more than 100 ancient monuments in the form of stone ships, burial mounds and cairns. The majority of them date from the Iron Age, but the biggest stone cairn, Digerrojr, 30 metres in diameter and 4 metres high, is from the Bronze Age. It is said that the stone cairn was build over the grave of Graip, Chief of Gotland and grandson of Tjelvar. Elinghem Church Ruin G4 An exciting church ruin set in a peaceful meadow. The church was built in the 13th century, and was abandoned around the 17th century. Today, the rectangular nave and almost square
34
choir remain. The communion table is made from limestone. Its beautiful setting has made it a popular wedding venue. Galgen D7 Heavy wooden beams that are supported by three six-metre high limestone columns that were used to hang criminals from, by both ropes and hooks. In 2008, archaeologists found proof of the sights bloody history, bones from 30 different people who were most likely executed here. 250 metres to the north is a mushroom-shaped labyrinth, which, like the ruins of two limestone kilns in the area, has been declared a cultural heritage protection site.
Gammelgarn Tower I11 Throughout the ages, Östergarnslandet has been the target of invasions from Swedes (when Gotland belonged to Denmark), Danes and Russians. The Gammelgarn Tower is a square watch and defence tower, 13 metres high, and was built around 1190. The walls are made from limestone and have an inner and outer layer, two metres thick at the foot and tapered towards the top. Restored in 2006. Gannarve Stone Ship C12 The 29-metre long, 5-metre wide stone burial ship is beautifully placed north of Fröjel Church, south of Klintehamn. From the Gannarve Ship, you have a phenomenal view of the islands Karlsö
and Lilla Karlsö. The stone ship dates back to the early Bronze Age and is one of Gotland’s 350 stone ships. Restored in 1959. Ganns Church Ruin H4 Built in the 13th century either by wealthy farmers in the district or monks from the Order of the Cistercians as a pilgrim church – no one really knows. The church has been out of use since the 16th century, and its ruins were restored in 1924. A beautiful, peaceful place. Gnisvärds Stone Ships B9 The stone ships in Gnisvärd are two of the biggest and best preserved on Gotland. The larger of them is 47

metres long with both bow and stern stones measuring over one metre high. A total of about 100 stones make up this beautiful burial monument. Further south is another stone ship of 36 metres and to the east there is a burial site with cairns and eight round stone formations. Hule Hällar D19 Ruin of a residential stone house from the Middle Ages in Vamlingbo. The abandoned farm Fridarve is known as the “Castle of Hulehällar.” This is an unusual house from the 13th century, at least two stories high, one of few visible ruins of Storsudret’s many stone houses from the Middle Ages.
Hångers Källa H5 If you are familiar with the famous Swedish psalm “Den blomstertid nu kommer”, Hångers Källa in Lärbro is very popular and well worth a visit. It was in these peaceful surroundings that Israel Kolmodin (1643-1709) wrote the lyrics to what has become one of Sweden’s most well known songs.
Stora Hästnäs D7 Residential house made from limestone, similar to Visby’s customs warehouse with stepped gables and an opening for goods at its highest point. Work on building the farm commenced in the 1270s, and in the 14th century it was owned by Halvat and his wife Haldiaud. Declared a notable building in 1997.
Stora Bringes G10 These ruins were once an impressive storage building with a ground floor, first floor and attic. Dated from early 1240s. The architecture suggests that the upper level was likely to have been a summer residence and functions venue.
Sundre Tower C20 A defence tower from the early Middle Ages, totally unique and Gotland’s best-preserved tower. Thirteen metres high, made from sandstone, with amazing views from the top. Exciting wooden staircase inside the tower, especially near the top where it is built
into the wall. Birds like to nest in the loopholes. Parking available where you turn in by the church. Tjelvars Grave H7 An 18-metre long, five-metre wide well preserved stone ship from the Bronze Age. Word has it that Gotland’s founder Tjelvar is buried here. Next to the grave are two hill forts from the Iron Age. Uggarde rojr E15 Gotland’s largest burial cairn, dating back to the late Bronze Age. Originally by the coastline, today it is in a heath 200 metres from the sea where the huge grey stone cairn makes quite an impression.

CHURCHES
UNIQUE CULTURAL HERITAGE AND LIVING MEETING PLACES Take a drive around Gotland and visit all of the island’s 92 churches – it will take you about 14 hours and you’ll travel almost 1000 km. But it’s worth every minute and every meter. The churches are open so everyone can experience them and their unique spaces from the Middle Ages. Let your breath be taken away by beautiful paintings and sculptures. Or perhaps be shocked by the brutal scenes in the stories that they depict. Here is a selection. 38
Location: Kovik Chapel Photo: Roger Arleryd/gotlandsbild.com
Bunge K3 A large church with a lot of Gothic features, fantastic wall paintings in red and blue that are quite rare with images of knights and towns in perspective. The organ is one of Gotland’s foremost and more unique, it was built in Stockholm for the French Reformed Church. The cemetery wall has arrowslits and beautiful lychgates. There is also a ruin of an old rectory. Dalhem F9 A large and impressive church that was extensively renovated at the turn of last century in neo-Gothic style. The western portal has skilfully carved capitals that you mustn’t miss. It’s like walking into a church in the English countryside. Exceptionally beautiful detailed interior and paintings primarily from the early 1900s.
Fide D17 A little Romanesque church. From the tower you can see the Baltic Sea in both the east and the west. The triumphal cross is disproportionately large. In the triumphal arch is a painting with text that depicts King Valdemar IV of Denmark’s invasion of Gotland. The cemetery has ancient details with three portals and lychgates from the Middle Ages. This is where Tyra Lundgren is buried, one of Gotland’s most popular artists and potters. Fröjel C13 A church with a Romanesque nave and tower and a later-built large choir in Gothic style, that is significantly higher than the nave. It is beautifully positioned on the cliffs above the old harbour. The labyrinth by the church is thought to be from pre-Christian times.
The unusual-looking defence tower is most likely a ruin of a rectory from the Middle Ages. Fröjel Church is one of the island’s oldest churches, the four Evangelists are on the steps. Fårö L2 Fantastic sea views can be enjoyed from the hill the church is built on. It’s one of the newer churches on Gotland – its walls are partially from the Middle Ages but the church underwent extensive renovations in 1858-59 when the large transepts and sacristy were added. Worth looking at inside are the “Käuta” paintings and the baptismal font and crucifix from the 1300s. And don’t miss Ingmar Bergman’s grave in the northwest corner of the cemetery. Mästerby D10 A beautiful and well-proportioned
church with countless internal frescos, including unique examples from the early 13th century. In the aspe you can see Christ depicted as a judge. Don’t miss the picture of Virgin Mary from the early 1200s at the front of the northern side of the nave. The altar is made from sandstone and is from 1688. A Runic inscription on the northern door reads “Jungfrur, bedjen edra böner på rätta sättet”, which would roughly translate to “Maidens, pray your prayers in the right way.” Vamlingbo C19 Next to the church is a manor-like complex with the large former rectory and its annexes. The church has beautiful glass windows and frescos from the 13th, 14th and 18th centuries. The pulpit is from the 17th century and behind the wall opening for the lectern.

GOTLAND’S OLD FISHING BASES
CULTURAL TREASURES WITH BOATSHEDS AND LANDING PLACES Gotland has a number of fishing bases that are hundreds of years old. Their fishing huts have been used for storing tools and equipment, and many of them are still in their original condition, thanks to the care of passionate locals. Wandering into an old fishing base is like stepping into an ancient world that shows how strong local communities once were.
Anga I10 Baju and Grunnsudden. Baju is the largest fishing base with seven wooden huts gathered on the point. Most probably built in the early 1800s. There is also a small jetty and an outdoor dance floor. Ardre H12 Vitvär, Gamle Broen, Langbjenne, Nya Broen and Gammelhamn. The first three were declared culturally significant when Gotland’s fishing bases were inventoried in 1973. Burs F15 Tomtbod is a sizable, well-preserved fishing base for the Burs and Rone parishes. The huts were declared notable buildings as their exteriors are still relatively intact. 31 of the original 80 huts remain today. Eke E16 Djaukrok and Bybod. Djaukrok is a reconstructed old fishing base with post-and-plank huts, some of which
40
have shingled rooves. Bybod is an excellent example of an isolated fishing base consisting of only a couple of small huts from the 1900s. Eksta B13 Djupvik and Kronvald. Djupvik is a well-known old fishing base with a backdrop of the islands Stora Karlsö and Lilla Karlsö on the horizon to the southwest. About 30 huts are tightly packed into three rows. Kronvald is a little fishing base with wooden huts, primarily from the 1800s. A few post-and-plank huts with wooden rooves as well. Fårö K-N 1-3 There are about 35 old fishing bases along the coast of Fårö indicating the importance of fishing for this remote island. Worth mentioning are the fishing bases Helgumannen, Lauters, Jauvika, Västriv, Ulsbod and Hammars who has been named as particularly valuable from a cultural heritage perspective.
Gammelgarn I12-J12 Grynge, Sjaustru and Sysne. Grynge is unusually well preserved and the transformation of the huts into holiday accommodation has been done well. In Sjaustru, there are about ten huts in a row along the road to the jetty out on the point. Sysne is the largest of the Gammelgarn old fishing bases. Gothem I8 Agbod, Botvaldevik and Hangrebod. In Agbod you will find not only about ten wooden huts and two older postand-plank huts, but also a boatshed with one of Gotland’s best-preserved peasant fishing boats. Botvaldevik’s old fishing base is about 100 metres north of the modern fishing base, and a bit further back from the sea. Hangrebod consists of a few huts and wooden storage sheds from the early 1900s, as well as some sheds from the middle of the 1900s. Grötlingbo E16-17 This long section of coast has five old
fishing bases, Ronningsbod, Austarbod, Fluntinge, Klasen and Slesbod. There are also a number of individual huts along the coast around Grötlingboudd in places that do not have specific place names. Hablingbo B15 Petesviken, Laxskär and Alsviken. Petesviken is the largest of the three, with a fishing base that belongs to the local farms in the area. This base was in use until 1973. Hamra D19 Vändburg’s old harbour. This fishing base shows us in an interesting way the development of fishing that was still taking place in the 1900s. The huts vary in type and size, more than half of them are made from stone. Norrlanda I9 Hammars old fishing base has been documented on maps since the 1700s, both the boat harbour and the boatshed can be seen. This fishing

WHERE
The letters and numbers are references to the maps at the back of the guide. base represents an ancient tradition of settlement linked to parish communal organisation. När H14 När is the parish on Gotland that has the highest number of well-preserved fishing bases. Nabben, Hammarstrand, Djaupdy, Trådstrand, Fluntings and Kapellet are like pearls on a necklace along the coast, and they are all very different from each other. Take a look at Brändu, it got its name from the large stone Bränndstain that is out in the harbour. Othem I5 The most important fishing for the farms in the Othem and Boge areas has taken place at Sjuströmmar and Bogeviken. Sjuströmmar consists of about ten huts on both sides of the road that divides the fishing base in two. At its height, Sjuströmmar had about 15 huts that were primarily used for equipment storage and stables.
Rone F15 Hus fishing base, located just north of Ronehamn, has about 15 huts from the 1700s and 1800s, primarily built from stone. Several of these are very old with protruding rooves out over the entrances. They were built to be homes in the later Iron Age/Viking Age, and were originally made from wood. Rute K5 Lergrav and Karthaken. Lergrav consists of about 30 buildings spread out along an 800-metre stretch of coast below Vallebergsklint. Only one stone hut still remains from the Karthaken fishing base on Furillen, and it has been renovated by the Bunge Museum. Sanda B11 Korumpu, Kovik, is Gotland Fishing Museum’s fishing base that has many relocated, unique huts using the post-and-plank method and other timber building methods with vertical planks and wooden or shingled rooves. Further out on the point is a beautiful
little fishing base with red-painted huts that portray what these fishing bases looked like originally in the period between the two world wars in the 1900s. Stenkyrka F4 Lickershamn’s fishing base has a long history. The majority of the approximately 20 red-painted huts along the road were built when the harbour was expanded in the 1930s. In the 1940s, a salting-house was built. In the summer you can buy both fresh and smoked fish here. Vamlingbo D20, C18 There are several fishing bases here. Holm, Norebod, Klasen, Grumpe and Västlands Länningar. Of these, Holm, Norebod and Västlands Länningar have been named as having particular value. Väskinde D6 Själsö fishing base, consisting of ten huts of which four are made from stone. They are in a row along the road out to the jetty on the southeast end
of the point. At the end of the 1900s, the jetty was modified into a well-built harbour that has been used for commercial fishing in modern times. Today it is a pleasant little harbour suitable for small boats, 6 km north of Visby. Västerhejde C8 In Buske there are ten huts built against the cliff that is behind the beach. With only ten metres or so between the cliff and the water’s edge, these huts are constantly exposed to the sea’s moods. A unique fishing base on Gotland. Östergarn J11 Ferse fishing base, Katthammarsvik and Herrvik. Ferse is located between Grogarnsberget and Katthammarsvik, situated in the open on the beach with a few huts made from vertical planks in the early 1900s. Today there is a fish factory, smokehouse and restaurant. There are about 30 huts standing in three rows. As recently as the 1980s, this was Gotland’s largest fishing harbour.

WINDMILLS OF GOTLAND BEAUTIFUL, WINDSWEPT LANDMARKS
Dutch windmills, post mills, smock mills and watermills – they all had an important part to play in the life of Gotland farmers. There were as many as 100 left as recently as 50 years ago – today there are fewer, a few still in use and others preserved as beautiful cultural historical landmarks with plenty of stories to tell.
Location: Hundlausar Photo: Roger Arleryd/gotlandsbild.com

Anderse D17 There were once six windmills east of the church in Fide, today the only one left is at Anderse. A post mill, it is still used for hobby milling sometimes. In the 1940s it was used secretly under the cover of darkness as the Crown had claimed the entire rye harvest.
WHERE
Aner I6 Aner watermill is located on the river Anerån in Boge, close to its outlet into the bay Bogeviken. It is one of Gotland’s two watermills still in use. The mill was built in the second half of the 19th century, and has a six-metrehigh water wheel. Parts of the building are from an earlier watermill.

Bingers Windmill, Visby D7 This impressive Dutch-style windmill in the northeast corner of Visby was built in 1854. During the years when it was in use, it could automatically follow the direction of the wind. Equipped with movable wooden staves on the vanes to capture just the right amount of wind without having to stop the windmill. Today used as a sporting goods store. Bonsarve C19 A farm windmill that is probably Sweden’s last fully preserved windmill of its type. Smock mill with a stone base in two stories and top section in wood. The mill also powered a chaff cutter, circular saw, chipper and milling machine. Built in 1905. Valuable from a technological and cultural historic perspective. Butleks M1 Most likely built in the late 1800s. Called “Nanten’s Mill” after its last miller Ferdinand Pettersson. Pettersson was deaf and mute and lived in a cottage nearby. He ground flour in the mill until 1935 when he died of Tuberculosis. Both the mill and his cottage have been restored by the Fårö local history society. Bungemuseet K3 In the museum area there is an octagonal timber windmill built in 1794. It was relocated from Hablingbo in southern Gotland where this unusual type of windmill was common. The special shape of the windmill with its narrow upper section allows the top section to turn with the help of the so-called mill horse (with wheels). The watermill at the museum is from Bothe Farm, Alskog, where it was located on a small stream. Gervalds C19 The two mills on the two farms in Gervalds make a pretty sight if you approach them from the west, on the road from Kettelvik. One is the hexagonal smock mill of smooth limestone under a dome and was featured in one of the Pippi Longstockings films. The other is a beautiful low smock mill in smooth limestone that is often photo-
graphed due to its pretty location on a stream. Built in 1884, today used as a holiday house. Havdhem valskvarn D16 A Dutch windmill, built in 1918 after being moved from Bergvara. It was rebuilt to be used for crude oil in 1924 and was powered by electricity in the 1930s. Was in continuous use in the 1900s. Högan, Lågan, Kärringen & Plågan D7 Four became three when Högan (then a nightclub) burnt down to the ground on the night of Lucia in 1976. Today the remaining three windmills are in bad shape but they have made a pretty sight in south Visby on the hill above the harbour since they were built in the late 1800s. Ihre watermill G4 A watermill that was used until 70 years ago. Beautiful limestone four-storey building that has been converted into a party/conference/art venue in the park by the river Ihreån. Lauter L2 Built by limestone mogul Johan Blesell in 1794. Probably the first windmill on the island of Fårö with double millstones. The mill has had many millers throughout the years. Restored in 1992 after many years of disrepair. The mill has a new dome, doors, vanes and plastered exterior. A large amount of the mill’s interior remains in original condition. Norrbys E10 Gotland’s oldest water mill. Every year in May, when the water is plentiful in the reservoir, the Väte local history society grinds their own flour. The farm Gården Norrbys was donated to Gotland Museum in 1995. Declared a notable building, in 2002 it became Gotland’s first cultural heritage reserve. Slitegårds F9 The parish was dominated by watermills from the 1600s onwards. The first windmill arrived on Myre and Näsungs in the 1800s. Two windmills remain on Myre and a watermill on Slitegårds. Storkvänni D18 Octagonal smock mill in smooth limestone, five stories with a dome. Used for the commercial grinding of grain, sifting and sawing. A prominent landmark on Storsudret. Restored in 1992. Överstekvarn E5 Flour was ground in three watermills here already back in the Middle Ages. Nedersta, Mellersta and Överstekvarn – the lower, middle and top mills. The Lower Mill was placed by the beach and also called Strandkvarnen – the beach mill. The Middle Mill was below the only one of the three remaining today – the Top Mill.

GOTLAND’S WOODED HAY MEADOWS WELL-PRESERVED GREEN OASES
There are about two hundred beautiful wooded hay meadows on Gotland, and visiting them is a lovely way to spend your day. The Swedish Church owns about a quarter of them. They are beautiful, well cared for, loved by generations and a true part of Gotland’s cultural heritage. Today they are primarily cared for by volunteers. A typical Gotland meadow consists of open grassy fields surrounded by deciduous trees and hazelnut bushes. Treat them well and with an open mind.

44
Ajvide Coastal Meadow B14 Also called Käldstu hoigard and Bodbackar. A treeless, fenced grassy meadow surrounded by grazing land. This meadow is one of Gotland’s two remaining coastal haylands and for this reason it is of particular value. Relatively dry land where sweet vernal grass, small blue bells and pretty quaking grass grow. Allekvia Leafy Meadow G4 Magnificent deciduous trees grow here in fertile clay soil. Follow the path through open fields, half-open land and lush groves in this varied beautiful natural environment. Alskute Meadow C14 Like a little island inside a beautiful fence surrounded by farmland. Overgrown until 1970 when it was reclaimed and a small hay barn was built. Almost completely open to the north, only partially bordered by deciduous trees and shrubs. In the southern part you can find oaks, elms, ashes, pines and birch trees. Several enclosures that date back to before the birth of Christ. Alvare Meadow G14 Large areas in När parish were used as meadows for feeding stock from the beginning of the 1700s, according to old maps. This meadow, by Alvare Farm, is still used today. Typical for the sandy soil found in these parts, there are many birch trees and in the northern part a number of ash trees and the occasional juniper bush. Quaker grass, almond blossom, lesser butterfly orchids and burnt-tip orchids all grow here. Anga Church Meadow H10 The ground here is poor in nutrients and can be damp. An open meadow filled with herbs, so tread carefully. The small hay barn with an outhouse outside the gates is worth a stop and an extra look. Ardre Church Meadow H12 This church meadow is by an old road, below the mountain. The moist ground is home to a wealth of herbs. A large battlefield burial site provides evidence of human presence from a time long past. Ekebys Meadow F5 Part of a larger area that was earlier used as a hay meadow. Gotland’s largest Population of old oak trees – called Salmbärshagen. A reminder of times pre the early 1800s when the government started permitting tree felling which led to the disappearance of many oak trees. Elinghem Church Meadow G4 Elinghem church ruin in Hangvar is surrounded by this beautiful meadow. Rich in hazels, magnificent oaks and ash trees. Pretty small glades open up and attract lovely light in the meadow.
Fide Church Meadow D17 A relatively new nature reserve with beautiful oak trees and a wealth of herbs. The leafy forest close by is a part of the big old church meadow. The area shows how a meadow can recover once farming stops. Grötlingbo Church Meadow E16 Part of the deciduous forest area known as Pankar. The land is kept open by mowing and grazing. Here you can see two large battle graves and old building foundations as you walk into the meadow. There used to be a big homestead here, most likely dating back to the pre-Viking era. Halla Abbey Meadow F19 During the Middle Ages, this meadow was part of the Roma Abbey. It was most likely farmed until the early 1900s. In 1985, work began to restore the southern part to its former state. It began to be farmed again in 2013. Hammars Meadow I5 A little away from the forest on the border between Lärbro and Hellvi. Well worth a visit. Beautifully surrounded by large beautiful trees. Has everything a Gotland meadow can offer. Haugstajns Coastal Meadow I11 You can find small, sensitive and rare herbs here, such as the little hair sedge, which is common in lime-rich mountain moorlands but rare in the southern part of the country. An open grazing coastal meadow faces the sea, and back towards land pines and birches dominate the landscape. Rowans, willows and apple trees can be found together with beautiful pillar-shaped juniper bushes in the dryer eastern part. Hejnum Hay Meadow G6 There is a map from 1698 that shows this hay farm as a meadow, and it's likely that this land has been cultivated for even longer. The area below Hejnum stores water well and there is a wide variety of flora in the drier areas closer to the road. Cow slips, spotted cat’s ear, and dropworts are just a few of the plants typically found here. Oaks, ashes, hazels and even rowans and maples surround the meadow. The meadow became a Nature 2000 area in 2005. Hulte Kruppar E15 Right on the southern border of Hemse is this lovely meadow, with it large open fields surrounded by deciduous trees and lots of hazels. Hummelbos Meadow F15 Hummelbos meadow is a little unusual – you can find alder and heath spotted orchids here. Positioned on a small slope by the Hummelbos Farm and quite lush. Hazel, ash, oak and plenty of the meadow grasses viper’s grass and sweet vernal grass. In the southwest part you can also find other rare species.
Hässle Meadow J3 Unique in Sweden and on Gotland, this meadow is like no other. Low knotty deciduous trees indicate that the land has been farmed for several hundred years. It stretches from the flat, rocky shoreline to permanent grassy meadows to wetlands. Hörsne Church Meadow G9 A U-shaped clearing in the deciduous forest. Damp ground with abundant early summer flowers. Take the path to the meadow and sit down for a while by the small barn. Järnvägs Park F13 Today a lush meadow but in the 1700s it was a part of the extensive haymaking land around Tänglings marsh. At the edge of the largest section there is a memorial that was signed by King Gustav V when the railway was opened in 1925. Cultivated silver firs, sweet vernal grass, devil's bit, quaker grass, dropwort and viper's grass, plus oaks, elms, maples and ashes. Kapell Meadow J1 Located on the island Gotska Sandön and featuring what is probably Gotland’s largest sheep barn, built 182324 by Petter Gottberg. The land was used for winterfeed. Later, the area was used for grazing sheep, and in the end of the 1800s it was used as a nursery for pine trees, which were used to keep the island’s sandy soils in place. Stands of yews have spread across the sandy soils covered in low bushes, and even oaks, hazels and birches can be found here. Kruse Meadow D15 Land use here has varied over the years and it is though that it has been cultivated since the Iron Age. Today it is divided into two parts – an open meadow and behind an area of ashes, oaks, hazels, elms and black thorn, among other trees. Dropwort, cowslips, viper’s grass and spotted cat’s ear can also be found here. Beautiful barn built in 2000, and the remains of an old well. Käld Meadow, Garda G13 Wet grasslands with plenty of herbs. Positioned under the mountain slopes in the northwest. Foundations from old dwellings can be found further in the meadow.
elms, aspens and dogwoods as well as the rare grass hairy brome in some places. Untouched for a long time, in 1994 clearance work was carried out followed by raking and haymaking. On the other side of the road is Stora Hajdes meadow, a large open meadow that shows us how the land was all connected in a cultivating system and how the meadow had an important function. The open, herb-rich meadow has greater yellow rattle, fragrant orchids, lesser butterfly orchids and viper’s grass. Lojsta Church Meadow E13 Lojsta church meadow is one of the most well-known and frequently visited meadows on Gotland. Along with the overgrown deciduous forest behind it, the meadow is a church reserve. The old Lojsta Oak is no longer alive but still well worth seeing. Mangsarve Meadow F8 A warm and beautiful meadow that is perfect for a stroll. Furthest in you will find it widens and there is a hay barn and an ancient Gotland farm cross. Mästerby Church Meadow D10 Classically beautiful Gotland meadow. High deciduous trees and hazels. Two hay barns just inside the gate with benches and tables. Petes Meadow C15 A walk in Petes Meadow is like walking through all of Gotland’s meadows. An open slope with plenty of greater yellow rattles tells us the ground has been ploughed, a half open area with oaks, ashes and elms and further back an overgrown area with deciduous forest. Among the broad-leaved trees are small-leaved elms. Continue through the forest to find open areas with a rich selection of meadow flora. Präst Meadow C10 Was called Muhlängen until 1701 when its name was changed to Maldesänget. Open meadow with sycamore maples and a fence towards the road, and oaks, ashes, birches and hazels plus plenty of flowering meadow plants. An old road cuts through the meadow, there is also an ancient stone wall from the Iron Age to the south.
Laxare Meadow H6 A church meadow where you can expect to see everything a classic Gotland meadow offers: graves and other historical sites, open grasslands framed by deciduous trees and shrubs, and the wide variety of wild herbs that the area is known for.
Sudergårda Meadow G7 A well-cared for and beautiful meadow with rich flora. Pines, oaks, young hazel birches and in the eastern part rowans and elms. A wet area in the southeast part is surrounded by shrubs. A lovely fence borders the area, which was visited in 1992 by both the King of Sweden and the King of Norway. There is a plaque to tell the story.
Lilla and Stora Hajdes Meadows D12 Valuable historical findings in Lilla Hajdes, burial sites from the Bronze Age and house ruins from the Iron Age tell us stories of the people who lived here way back in time. Ashes, oaks,
Östergarns Church Meadow I11 Relatively open land with copses of pine, birch and hazels under Östergarnsberget. Sandy, poor soil, covered in herbs. Church and school right by the meadow.

BIRD WATCHING BRING YOUR BINOCULARS AND ENJOY THE BIRDS
Sun, swimming, local cuisine and cultural experiences are some of the things that attract people to Gotland. Birds also find their way here, even if just for a short stop on a much longer journey. It’s no secret that Gotland is an island located to the south-east of mainland Sweden. This, along with Gotland having numerous coastal meadows with plenty of food, makes Gotland a popular place for a stopover among migratory birds. Birdwatchers are naming Gotland more and more as an interesting place to see rare species. Photo: Niclas Ahlberg/N

Faludden E19 Faludden and Stockviken are interesting for migratory birds, and you will see many seabirds. The bird-watching tower in Stockviken is on one of Gotland’s best bird lakes. Fårö L-N, 1-3 The lakes Alnäsa träsk and Mölnor träsk have a rich birdlife and Eke träsk is home to interesting nesting birds in the summer months. Migrating birds can also be found here in the spring and autumn when they stop to feed. Don’t miss Norsholmen, a popular place for both birds and birdwatchers. Hoburgen B20 The area around Hoburgen and the sand bar to the south is a classic stopover for migratory birds, and there are also many birds of prey found here. Birds are ringed here in the spring and autumn. The coastline När - Lau H13-14 The shallow bay Lausviken is popular
among shorebirds, ducks and geese, especially in the autumn. Two bird watching towers. Birds of prey. Närsholmen attracts nesting birds and migratory birds. You’ll have a good chance of seeing the beautiful pied avocet here. Nisseviken C16 The fishing huts you’ll find here point towards the area’s history as a fishing base. These days it offers beautiful coastal meadows, panoramic views and a rich birdlife. Black storks have been spotted here, as have Temminck’s stints, Caspian terns and Sandwich terns. Stora Karlsö A13 Unique in the Baltic region with thousands of razorbills and common guillemots – there were 14,000 pairs of common guillemots when last counted and both species are increasing in numbers. Their young jump spectacularly from the cliffs each summer around July 1st. The common guille-
mots are a subject of research into the Baltic Sea’s ecological systems. Storsund I8 Just a few kilometres from the sea in the parish of Gothem is the nutrientrich Lake Storsund. The nature reserve is owned by the Society for the Conservation of Nature on Gotland. This is where you will find Gotland’s largest colonies of shovelers, grey geese, grey herons, cranes and water hens. The bird-watching tower was built in 2016 and can be reached by taking the walkway over the marshlands. Träskmyr H4 Träskmyr is a nature reserve about two kilometres southwest of Kappelshamn and is Gotland’s largest marshland (180 hectares). The marsh Stenstumyr is its neighbour to the south. Here you can find many nesting birds including common reed buntings, European reed warblers, bearded tits, common snipes, water rails, spotted crakes, corn crakes, western marsh harriers and
cranes. The bird-watching tower east of Gardträsk has great views. To get there, take the partially planked path from the dam in the northeast. Ugnen Bird Protection Area B14 Just south of Ekstakusten is Ugnen Bird Protection Area. The large coastal grazing lands here are one of Gotland’s richest areas for birdlife. Nesting birds here include northern pintails, stints, pied avocets, ruffs, grey geese, gadwalls, little terns and garganeys. Huge flocks of bernicle geese stop here in the spring and large numbers of waders can be seen here in the autumn. Access forbidden March 30 – June 30. Västergarn B10-11 Paviken has a unique mix of different environments that makes the area attractive to birds. Skansudd at Kronholmen attracts many birds in the spring and autumn. The shallow bay Västergarnsviken is popular among shorebirds, ducks, gulls, terns and skimmers. Varied nature.

Old Man Hoburg B20 You will find the famous sea stack “Old Man Hoburg at the very end of the road, as far south as you can go on Gotland. Shaped and formed by the wind and waves over thousands of years, he is, together with the limestone stacks surrounding him, an important part of world history. He is made from shelly limestone, the youngest rock that forms Gotland. Seen from the right angle, Old Man Hoburg looks like the head of a man and according to legend, he had his own dining room in the cave next to him.
