Welcome!
GOTLANDSGUIDEN GOES INTERNATIONAL! The Gotland Guide has been welcoming visitors to our island and providing them with useful information since 1997, but this is the first time the guide has been produced in a foreign language. We hope the guide will prove to be as popular and useful for you as the Swedish version is for our native visitors. We have tried to think of what would be most interesting and useful to read about for visitors from abroad. With such a fantastic range of nature and culture it’s been difficult to pick the highligts but we are now proud to present ”100 sights U must C!”

Naturally we realise that there’s no way you’ll have time to visit all the sights, so let yourself be guided by your interests and where you happen to find yourself on the island. We also hope that you’ll be back
some day and that you tell your friends and neighbours about the island that we’re so proud of. Why not bring Gotlandsguiden English home and show them?! During the 2016 summer season we will also be launching our mobile app ”Gotland” in English. Look for it on AppStore or Google Play! Aside from our 100 sights the app will also help you navigate to the right spot and be continuously updated with useful information. For those who only have time to spend a few hours in the World Heritage City of Visby we also print a very detailed map, where we present the same sights as in this booklet and help you to find your way around. Our map is available at the Tourist Office on Donner’s Plats and other venues. Start exploring!

THE FOUR SEASONS LEAVE THEIR MARK ON GOTLAND Spring brings light to the island and the light on Gotland is one of the strongest on the planet. Summer is short but very beautiful, and with 800 km of coastline it’s easy to find a secluded beach on which to enjoy it. Autumn is when everything slows down and is much appreciated by many who live on the island – it’s when we Gotlanders have Gotland pretty much to ourselves. Winter is seldom white here, but seeing the landscape covered with snow is amazing.

Welcome to Nature! Many people come to Gotland for its beautiful nature. Here’s a lot to be seen all year around, but most are tempted to come in the summertime. What makes our nature so special? Maybe it’s our location in the middle of the Baltic sea, our mild climate and our limestone scenery. Our biological diversity is supported by small scale farming and forestry that continues even today. There are 130 local nature reserves on Gotland so it’s easy to find your own favorite spot. Entering a reserve you will see a sign giving you information about what’s special with that particular place and if there are any restrictions to be respected. Too much lecturing is never fun, but the restrictions are for the preservation of the habitat, so kindly read the sign before entering. It’s also important to observe that the legal right of access to private land, that is so special in Sweden (see link below) doesn’t apply in these areas.
• Right of public access
Many people experience Gotland by car, motorhome or caravan and it can be tempting to drive on the beach or off-road in order to reach a secluded spot. This is strictly forbidden both in reserves and elsewhere. The ground on Gotland is sensitive and is easily spoiled: wheel tracks will stay for very long time. In the reserve areas there are special restrictions and for other places the law for off-road driving is applicable (see link below). The beaches around Gotland are also protected by the special Beach Protection Environment Act. This is mainly to preserve a coast line that is accessible and can be enjoyed by everyone, without commercial interests. The Beach Protection Act regulates what may be built within the area but also what applies for parking of motorhomes and caravans (see link below).
A warm welcome to Gotland!
• Law for off-road driving • Camping – caravans and motor homes

Gotland The history of
CORAL REEFS, THE HANSEATIC LEAGUE AND THE CIVIL WAR
430 000 000 BC The continent Baltica, located at the equator, consists of coral reefs and tropical water. The island’s limestone and marlstone have their origins from this period. 9 000 BC Gotland rises out of the sea. 7 000 BC The first people populate Gotland. According to the ”Gutasagan” an ancient tale, the first man on the island was called Tjelvar. 5 500–2 500 BC Tjelvar’s descendants start populating the Gotlandic coastline and the island of Stora (Big) Karlsö. 200 AD Somebody carves runes into an arrowhead on Gotland. One of the oldest runic characters found in Sweden.

600–1000 AD The trading journeys to and from Gotland are believed to have started long before the Middle Ages. Maybe as early as in the Neolithic Age, but definitely during the Iron Age and the beginning of the Viking Era. Archaeological evidence of more than fifty ports and other trading posts have been found along the coastline. 12th century This is when the building of all the stone churches starts – altogether almost one hundred churches – of which the major part was built during a period of 250 years. In Visby as many as seventeen churches were built. Today you’ll find thirteen church ruins within the city wall, along with the very active cathedral of Saint Mary ”Maria”. In the countryside there are 92 churches and 4 abandoned churches, most of them are open to visit.
1150 The Hanseatic League is founded and in addition to Visby, Lübeck (Germany), Tallinn (Estonia) and Bergen (Norway) are important ports of trade. 1288 A civil war breaks out between the people living in the countryside – farmers - and the traders in Hanseatic Visby. The construction of The City Wall begins. The reason for this is that the bourgeoisie in Visby, has concentrated all trade to Visby and the farmers have to sell their merchandise via Visby and are forced to pay a fee -duty-, to get their goods inside the city wall. 1350 The plague strikes and this is when Gotland starts to degenerate and lose importance. 1361 The Danish King Valdemar Atterdag attacks Visby and 1800 men from the coun-

tryside are killed outside The City Wall. The bourgeoisie inside the wall does not take part in defending the city. Instead they pay a tax to the Danes ”brandskattning” and in return for this, permission to exercise trade with Denmark is given. July 27th is a day of tragedy in the history of Gotland. 1447–1449 Erik of Pommern who has become a ruler without land, reigns Gotland and takes to operate piracy all over the Baltic Sea. End of the 15th to mid 16th century Danish lords run Gotland more or less as they please with taxes and tolls and pursue piracy in the Baltic. Taxes rise with more than 1 000%. 1525 The citizens of Lübeck, who are tired of piracy, attack Visby and as a result of the peace negotiations between Lübeck and Denmark the Swedish King Gustav Vasa has to surrender Gotland to Denmark. 1645 The peace in Brömsebro – Gotland is returned to Sweden after having been under Danish rule for 300 years. 1715-1720 Russian plundering raids are carried out along the eastcoast. The great power of Sweden is weakened. 1850 The Crimean War means big business in Fårösund, a village in the northernmost part of the Gotlandic mainland. Fårösund serves as a base for the English-French fleet, but cholera strikes hard and a cemetery
for cholera victims is set up at Ryssnäs in southeastern Fårö. 1855 The Botanical Garden in Visby is laid out and opened to the public by DBW – The Bathing Friends. 1859 The first telegraph cable to connect Gotland to the Swedish mainland is established. 1866 The first passenger ship of “The Steamship Company Gotland” makes her maiden voyage to the Swedish mainland. 1878 The railroad between Visby and Hemse is inaugurated by King Oskar II. 1883 Now it becomes possible for someone living in Slite to talk over the phone to a person in Visby. 1896 Gotland’s Tourist Association is founded.
1954 Gotland’s entire electrical system is connected to the Swedish mainland through a cable, the first of its kind in the world. 1961 Ingmar Bergman shoots the movie ”Through a Glass Darkly” on Gotland, the first in a long row of movies. He buys his own house on Fårö. 1971 Gotland is turned into one sole municipality instead of thirteen different ones. 1995 Visby – i.e. The City within the Wall - is added to UNESCO’s World Heritage Site List. 1998 “The modern Hanseatic Days’ ” market - the eighteenth - takes place in Visby with trade, seminars and cultural events. 1999 Gotland hosts The Island Games, the Olympics for islanders from around the world, with more than two thousand participants from fourteen different countries. In 2017 Gotland will be the venue again.
1915 The German minesweeper Albatross is sunk by Russian coast artillery at Östergarnsholme. Thirty soldiers die and are buried in the churchyard of Östergarn church.
2001 Visby hosts seven different EU conferences during the six months that Sweden holds the chairman club within the EU.
1918 The Spanish flu ravages on Gotland.
2007 Carl von Linné should have turned 300 years which is celebrated all through the year. Flights, domestic and international, to and from fourteen different destinations.
1942 The first proper airport is opened in Visby. 1944 A Russian submarine fires a torpedo into the passenger ship Hansa and 84 people are killed.
2003 The Almedalen Library is opened.
2007 The new Congress Hall, Wisby Strand, is opened.

1. SAINT MARIA’S CATHEDRAL Still in use, St Mary’s is a remarkable cultural treasure and probably the most visited of all sights on Gotland. This remains a popular destination for pilgrimage, especially in the summertime. It is also a place for stillness and contemplation. Light a candle and imbibe the atmosphere.

2. THE BOARDWALK
From Almedalen and the Botanical Garden this beautiful walk runs along the seaside all the way out to the beach Snäckgärdsbaden. On its way it passes The Love Gate, where you should stop and kiss your loved one. There’s a swimming spot “Kallis” at the beginning of the boardwalk but there are more options for taking a swim at Norderstrand, Gustavsvik and Snäck.

The walk inside the wall, from The ”Snäckgärd’s” Gate towards The ”Kames” Gate has been restored and offers magnificent views. This parapet was used by guards in the Middle Ages, and gives a feeling of days gone by.
Here contemporary art is exhibited but the museum also offers a local collection of art and handicraft from the 19th century up until today.

Hi! As a silversmith, I often work with what I would call, a generous minimalism; I work around raw and simple themes, and combine the quiet design process with the luxurious. Even though I am working with exclusive materials like gold, diamonds and Tahitian pearls, I try to do it with an unpretentious and downplayed approach. I think that the materials benefit from working consciously with an aesthetic subtleness. The surface of the gold remains filed; tight but raw. It brings out the natural colour of the gold. With the pulse and traditions found in Copenhagen and Georg Jensen where I have my roots, I presently run my shop and workshop in an anno 1300 vaulted room in the middle of Visby. This combination that without a doubt, impacts both my design process and daily life. The peaceful and aesthetic room, means a lot to me. It encourages a space for thoughts to flow, and I think that we need that as human beings. In contrast to the hectic days, that of course also can be a part of the shop, and in Visby, I usually work very slowly when developing my new models. Paradoxically, slower is sometimes faster. And if we let go of our expectations for something to happen, it can all of a sudden happen.

Visby city wall 8
– A GUIDED TOUR Visby is truly one of the most beautiful cities in the world. With the Wall surrounding the inner city and so many well preserved ruins from the Middle Ages it’s not only the perfect place to host the yearly Medieval Week, it’s also a wonderful place to walk the streets and explore or just breath in the atmosphere. Sit down and rest in one of the pavement cafés or restaurants – there’s so much to see, just don’t miss the city wall.

1. GUNPOWDER TOWER The oldest tower in the City Wall and originally a fortified tower in a little castle overlooking what was the harbour but is now Almedalen or The Valley of Elms. During the 17th century the tower was used as a gunpowder store. Who knows what the tower was originally called? 2. LOVE GATE Between the sun setting over the sea and the Botanical Garden lies the Gate where a thousand kisses have been delivered over the years. 3. MAIDEN TOWER Legend has it that the maiden who betrayed the city by allowing the Danish King Valdemar to enter Visby, was later walled in in this tower. This story is actually untrue though the tower was used as a prison for prostitutes during the Middle Ages. 4. SILVER BONNET A gleaming name for the City Wall’s newest tower. Orders came from Germany for the erection of this defence towards the north. 5. SNÄCKGÄRD’S GATE A stunning view for those of you who are not afraid of heights. Thanks to a newly reconstructed walkway you can walk the parapets like one of the guards of the old city. 6. LÜBECKER BREACH Here the wall stands in ruins after an attack by Lübecker and Hansan who breached the defences and ousted the pirate Sören Norrby from his base in Visby.
7. SAINT GÖRAN (GEORGE) GATE A gate for lepers giving them access to the large leprosy hospital of St. Göran located outside the wall. 8. TALL LISA The tallest tower, six stories high! 9. NORTHERN GATE One of the main city gates with its origins from 1280. During the crusades the gate was fortified with a portcullis. 10. MINT GATE This may have been the customs office and is probably older than the wall itself. 11. WELL GATE Water has often been scarce in Visby and the number of water wells inside the wall few. This gate was built to allow access to a well to the east of the wall. 12. DALMAN TOWER This seventeen-meter-tall tower was an important landmark for seafarers. 13. THE WALL THAT GAVE WAY In the beginning of 2012 a big part of the outer wall collapsed. Restoration has been accomplished – take a look! 14. EASTERN GATE Today this gate connects the more traditional shopping streets of the old Inner City with the newer shopping area Öster Centrum, under the collective name ’Visby Center’.

15. SCHOOL GATE This gate was opened in the late 1800s for easier access to the school built outside the wall. 16. KAJSAR TOWER The most imposing tower of the eastern wall. Previously used as jail but subsequently deemed too arcane. 17. VALDEMAR’S WALL This is where the Danish king Valdemar Atterdag tore down the wall in 1361. His conquest of Visby was a triumph. 18. SOUTHERN GATE This is where the main road to the south started. Inside you find the South Square. 19. ”SKANS” (REDOUBT) GATE In 1721, fear of the Russians led to development of this part of the wall. 20. VISBORGS’S CASTLE Around 1411 this powerful fortress was built and used until the Danes blew it up in 1679. A model replica can be found inside the northern part of the wall, next to the Snäckgärd’s Gate. ( No 5 ) 21. LITTLE BEACH GATE When the old harbour was located here, this was the entrance to a square with a market place, The City Hall and Stock Exchange. 22. FISHING GATE This gate probably led to a small fishing village close to the harbour.

Thanks to a Mediterranean climate zone the Botanical Garden offers lots of rare species. Established by ”De Badande Wännerna” – The Bathing Friends, 150 years ago. NORTH OF GOTLAND Gotlandståget
AND THE ISLANDS TO THE NORTH
The northern part of Gotland offers a magical mix of lonely shingle beaches and the most beautiful sandy beaches, on some of which the sand is so white and fine that your step makes a squeaky sound when you walk. Visiting the North without taking the convenient public ferry to Fårö is simply out of the question. On the other hand the trip to Gotska Sandön, Gotland’s Sand Isle, needs a little more planning. The limestone industry has left quite a few quarries that are now filled with water – perfect for a nice warm swim on a sunny day. 38 gotlandsguiden.se

25. JUNGFRUN – THE VIRGIN ”RAUK” Jungfrun is the tallest ”rauk” on Gotland and measures 12 meters above ground. She is situated on the edge of a cliff , which makes her 26 meters above sea level. ”In the 11th century Likajr the Wise, brought home a captive, the young boy Helge, who after having spent a lot of time with Likajr’s daughter Öllegard, fell in love with her. Likajr did not appreciate this and put Öllegard up on the top of the rauk and told Helge he could only marry her if he could manage to fetch her down. Helge was brave and accepted the challange, but on the way down, whilst carrying Öllegard on his back, he was shot in the head with an arrow from Likajr’s bow and the couple fell into the sea and were swallowed by the waves.”

67. STORA KARLSÖ – BIG KARLSÖ
Like the main island of Gotland, ”Stora Karlsö” dates back 400 million years and is mainly built up of fossilised coral reefs. This is one of the top ”must see” sights on Gotland and the easiest way of getting here is by the small ”ferryboat” that leaves from Klintehamn, 30 km south of Visby. It is possible to stay overnight here, for example, in the old Lighthouse, from which you have a stunning view out to sea. If you happen to be here in late June you may catch the remarkable guillemots ”Sillgrissla” who more or less force their young to fly. The young are literally pushed out of the nest from shelves high up on the cliff wall. But don’t worry - if they don’t make it to the sea their fat-filled chests usually save them from death when hitting the stony ground below. Once on the ground they still have to navigate past hungry sea gulls to get to the sea where their anxious parents await them. Exciting and frightening - truly a taste of the wild. You can walk around the island by yourselves and an evening dinner at the restaurant is a treat after a day’s efforts.

The historic railway runs from The Train Museum in Dalhem all the way to the Courtyard.
An old fishing village in the parish of Sanda, with a beautiful beach chapel. A very popular location for kite surfers. The name Cow Bay refers to the sand bank surrounding the bay which is known as ”korumpu” or ”cow’s bottom”. Nearby burial fields contain remains from the Viking era. Leave the car at the parking lot!

74. LJUGARN This was the first real beach resort on Gotland and where ”society” met to relax and take a swim in the sea. Princess Eugenie was among the regular guests. The atmosphere still remains except for the upper class stamp, that is long gone. Along the beach road you still find magnificent summer villas and a whole row of guesthouses. Ljugarn is also well known for its many nice restaurants. A short walk, along the beach road, north of Ljugarn you’ll find Vitvär fishing village and Folhammar ”rauk” field.

76. BAJU FISHING VILLAGE
This is where the local customs officers lived with their families enabling toll to be levied on items like wood, limestone and tar, that was being shipped from Gotland, without the goods having to pass through Visby. Known as ”The Knights of the Beach” they acted as lookouts for the main customs office.
The wooden fence that surrounds the fishing sheds create a very cosy feeling. For the farms located close to the sea fishing was important for food supply. A small wooden pier invites you for a swim in the sea.

77. GROGARN MOUNTAIN
”Grogarnsberget” rises 30 meters above sea level. Whether you’re driving a four-wheel drive, cycling, motorbiking or walking, the pebble road between Katthammarsvik and Herrvik is one of the most amazing and beautiful roads on the island. Looking out to sea you’ll have the small island of ”Östergarnsholme” in view. On top of ”Grogarnsberget” are remains of Gotland’s second largest ancient fortress from which it was possible to send fire signals to the largest fortress at ”Torsburgen”. During the Viking era one could spot intruders about 5-6 hours rowing time before arrival on shore.

78. KATTHAMMARSVIK COVE
A fishing village with two magnificent limestone mansions, Borgvik and Katthamra. In the early 1800s a merchant from Visby, Jacob Dubbe, had a beautiful house built here for his wife as a wedding present. It is known as ”Anna’s nöje” or “Anna’s pleasure”. A spectacular drive over ”Grogarnsberget” will take you to the next fishing village, Herrvik, which is a more developed harbour.

79. TORSBURGEN
80. SANDVIKEN, ÖSTERGARN
One of the most important fortresses in ancient times. In 1992 Torsburgen was struck by fire. Despite immense efforts by the fire brigade, the military and volountary workers it took days to get the fire under control and by then most of the trees were gone. The aftermath has led to a unique habitat of rare species.
Another of Gotland’s beautiful sandy and shallow beaches, perfect for a relaxing day, with amenities close by. Good parking facilities and in Sysne fishing village there is a small fish shop where you’ll find the catch of the day.
81. HERRVIK COVE
The name relates to the sort of upper class men ”herrar” who used to come here to fish. Still an active fishing harbour. The restaurant Hamnkrogen, which serves as a landmark, was built by a local fisherman and today it’s run by two young entrepreneurs from Visby.

SOUTH OF GOTLAND
A VARIED LANDSCAPE AND FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE The very south part of the island is named Storsudret - The Big South. Here the mix of beaches, churches, nice restaurants and beautiful sights is impressive. Take particular note of the alvar landscape that is also found on our sister island to the west, Öland. On your way to the South there are plenty of reasons to stop and take in the sights. Passing the narrow isthmus to the South there’s an interesting view over the wind generator park that provides the island with much of our ecological energy.

From a certain spot, indicated by a guidepost, the contour of the “rauk” looks like the profile of a man, therefore the name “the Hoburg old man”. Next to the “rauk” there is a restaurant with a fantastic seaview. Here you will also find a snack bar and a souvenir shop.
