Generous minimalism As a silversmith, I often work with what I would call, a generous minimalism; I work around raw and simple themes, and combine the quiet design process with the luxurious. Even though I am working with exclusive materials like gold, diamonds and Tahitian pearls, I try to do it with an unpretentious and downplayed approach. I think that the materials benefit from working consciously with an aesthetic subtleness. The surface of the gold remains filed; tight but raw. It brings out the natural colour of the gold. With the pulse and traditions found in Copenhagen and Georg Jensen where I have my roots, I presently run my shop and workshop in an anno 1300 vaulted room in the middle of Visby. This combination that without a doubt, impacts both my design process and daily life. The peaceful and aesthetic room, means a lot to me. It encourages a space for thoughts to flow, and I think that we need that as human beings. In contrast to the hectic days, that of course also can be a part of the shop, and in Visby, I usually work very slowly when developing my new models. Paradoxically, slower is sometimes faster. And if we let go of our expectations for something to happen, it can all of a sudden happen.

THE FOUR SEASONS LEAVE THEIR MARK ON GOTLAND Spring brings light to the island and the light on Gotland is one of the strongest on the planet. Summer is short but very beautiful, and with 800 km of coastline it’s easy to find a secluded beach on which to enjoy it. Autumn is when everything slows down and is much appreciated by many who live on the island – it’s when we Gotlanders have Gotland pretty much to ourselves. Winter is seldom white here, but seeing the landscape covered with snow is amazing.

VIKINGS Gotland was a force to be reckoned with at the end of the twelfth century. Ninety-two stone churches are evidence of great economic prosperity after the Vikings dominated trade eastwards for several centuries.

Thanks to the island’s strategic location in the Baltic Sea, Gotland has been a vital trading hub between the East and the West. Fröjel, located forty kilometres south of Visby, was one of the largest and most important ports on the island during the Viking Era. But it was not the only one. Archaeologists have found at least fifty Viking harbours along the coastline. Most of them were small, but six or eight of them were on the same scale as the harbour in Fröjel. Gotland Vikings made a joint effort to build their merchant ships and sail around the Baltic region and further south. In Russia they bought honey, tar and fur that they then took home to Gotland to trade. The first trade contacts with the Baltic States and Russia date back to the seventh century. Already in 750 AD the Vikings settled in the city of Aldejgju-

16 gotlandsguiden.se

borg on Lake Ladoga in north-western Russia. From here they went on to trade in the Arab world, the Caspian Sea, the Black Sea and Byzantium – present-day Istanbul. Gotland Vikings transported their goods on small ships that could be pulled across land between rivers. In contrast to the blood-thirsty expeditions made by the Norwegian and Danish Vikings to the west, Gotland Vikings avoided looting for the obvious reason that aimless looting would jeopardize valuable trade relations. At the end of the twelfth century, times got tougher for the islanders and the Vikings from Gotland. The harbour in Fröjel was abandoned when the German Hanseatic League took over the trade routes to Russia.

The History 430 000 000 BC The continent Baltica, located on the equator, consisted of coral reefs flourishing in the tropical sea. The island’s limestone and marlstone have their origins from this period. 9 000 BC Gotland rises out of the sea. 7 000 BC The first people populate Gotland. According to legend, the first man on the island was called Tjelvar. 5 500–2 500 BC Tjelvar’s descendants start populating Gotland’s coastline and the island of Stora Karlsö, located off the southeast coast.

92 churches and 4 abandoned churches, most of which are open to the public. 1150 The Hanseatic League is founded and Visby, along with Lübeck (Germany), Tallinn (Estonia) and Bergen (Norway) become even more important ports of trade. 1288 A civil war breaks out between rural farmers and the tradesmen in Hanseatic Visby. The construction of the Visby City Wall begins. The reason for this is that the bourgeoisie in Visby had concentrated all trade to Visby and the farmers who were forced to sell their merchandise via Visby were also forced to pay a duty to get their goods into the city.

200 AD Runes are carved into an arrowhead on Gotland. This is one of the oldest runic characters found in Sweden.

1350 The plague strikes and Gotland starts to decline and lose importance.

600–1000 AD The trading routes to and from Gotland are believed to have started long before the Middle Ages, maybe as early as in the Neolithic Age, and definitely by the Iron Age and the beginning of the Viking Era. Archaeological evidence of more than fifty ports and other trading posts have been found along Gotland’s coastline.

1361 The Danish King Valdemar Atterdag attacks Visby and 1800 rural Gotlanders are killed outside The City Wall. The bourgeoisie inside the wall do not participate in defending the city. Instead they are forced to pay a tax to the Danes, called ”brandskattning”, and in return for this, permission to exercise trade with Denmark is given. July 27th is a day of tragedy in the history of Gotland.

12th century Construction of the island’s almost 100 stone churches starts. The majority of them were built during a period of 250 years. As many as seventeen churches were built in Visby alone. Today you’ll find thirteen church ruins within the city walls, alongside the Visby Cathedral, which is still used today. Outside the city wall, there are

1447–1449 Erik of Pommern, who has become a ruler without land, reigns Gotland and operates piracy all over the Baltic Sea.

20 gotlandsguiden.se

From the end of the 15th century to the middle of the 16th century, Danish lords run Gotland more or less as they please with taxes and tolls and pursue piracy in the Baltic. Taxes rise by more than 1 000%.

of Gotland 1525 The citizens of Lübeck, who are tired of all the piracy, attack Visby and as a result of the peace negotiations between Lübeck and Denmark, the Swedish King Gustav Vasa is forced to surrender Gotland to Denmark.

1883 It becomes possible for someone living in Slite to talk over the phone to a person in Visby.

1645 The Treaty of Brömsebro – Gotland is returned to Sweden after having been under Danish rule for 300 years.

1915 The German minesweeper Albatross is sunk by Russian coast artillery at Östergarnsholme. Thirty soldiers die and are buried in the churchyard of Östergarn church.

1715-1720 Russian plundering raids are carried out along the east coast of the island. The great power of Sweden is weakened.

1896 Gotland’s Tourist Association is founded.

1918 The Spanish flu ravages Gotland. 1942 The first official airport is opened in Visby.

1850 The Crimean War means big business in Fårösund, the northernmost township in Gotland. Fårösund serves as a base for the English-French fleet, but cholera strikes hard and a cemetery for cholera victims is built at Ryssnäs in the southeast of the island Fårö. 1855 The Botanical Gardens in Visby are built and planted and opened to the public by DBW – The Swimming Friends. 1859 The first telegraph cable connects Gotland to the Swedish mainland. 1866 The first passenger ship of “The Steamship Company Gotland” makes her maiden voyage to the Swedish mainland. 1878 The railway between Visby and Hemse is inaugurated by King Oskar II.

1944 A Russian submarine fires a torpedo into the passenger ship Hansa and 84 people are killed. 1954 Gotland’s entire electrical system is connected to the Swedish mainland via a cable, the first of its kind in the world. 1961 Ingmar Bergman makes the film “Through a Glass Darkly” on Gotland, the first of a long line of movies. He buys his own house on the island of Fårö, off the northernmost tip of Gotland. 1971 Gotland becomes one municipality instead of thirteen separate ones. 1995 Visby – i.e. The inner city inside the city wall - is added to UNESCO’s World Heritage Site List.

VISBY Thanks to the island’s strategic location in the Baltic Sea, Visby has been a vital trading hub between the East and the West since the days of the Vikings. Today the city is one of the hottest summer towns in Sweden attracting visitors from all over the world. Wherever you go, you will notice traces of the past. The beautiful and impressive Visby Cathedral is a place for stillness, cobblestone alleys embraced by rose bushes can also be a restful experience.

Or why don’t take the short walk along the boardwalk from the beautiful park of Almedalen to the oasis of the Botanical Gardens. But Visby also offers bustling streets, shopping and fine dining in restaurants mentioned in the White Guide. And it is never far to the nearest pub. In 1995 the inner city inside the city wall was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage Site List.

The Hanseatic League In 1157 German merchants gathered in London to form a guild, and in 1159 the Hanseatic League was established in Lübeck. From the late twelfth century to the middle of the seventeenth century it grew into a powerful commercial and political union. The Hanseatic League had total domination of trade in the Baltic region for this extended period. Visby had an important role in the Gotland-German trade in Novgorod and was also the harbour used by the Germans when they set sail for their crusade against Latvia. Early on, the Hanseatic League mostly traded in luxury goods. They later expanded their business to include mass goods such as timber, herring, salt and tar. Herring and salt were the Hanseatic League’s most important commodities during their first centuries of dominance. Farmers on Gotland were forced to pay a toll at the gates of Visby, which led to a bloody civil war in 1288 between farmers from around the island and the

German merchants located inside the city wall of Visby. Visby won and when King Valdemar IV and his soldiers approached the city wall of Visby in 1361, the farmers were ruthlessly slaughtered. In order to keep their privileges, Valdemar Atterdag made the merchants in Visby pay dearly in gold and silver. This saw the end of Visby’s and Gotland’s prosperous days and they gradually lost their position as an important trading port. At the end of the fourteenth century, Gotland became a lair for pirates and the German Order in Marienburg sent an expedition to force them out. For over a decade they occupied the island, until 1408 when Gotland was purchased by Queen Margaret of Denmark, and fell under the Danish crown. Visby was invited to attend a so-called Hansadag for the last time in 1476 but did not send a delegation. 1669 was the last year of the Hanseatic League, when only nine cities attended the Hansadag in Lübeck.

8 A GUIDED TOUR AROUND THE WALL 1. The Gunpowder Tower Kruttornet. The oldest tower in the City Wall and originally a fortified tower in a little castle overlooking what was the harbour but is now Almedalen park. During the 17th century the tower was used as a gunpowder store. Who knows what the tower was originally called? 2. The Love Gate Kärleksporten. Between the sun setting over the sea and the Botanical Garden lies the Gate where a thousand kisses have been exchanged over the years. 3. The Maiden Tower Jungfrutornet. Legend has it that the maiden who betrayed the city by allowing the Danish King Valdemar IV and his troops to enter Visby, was later immured

in the walls of this tower. This story is actually untrue, but the tower was used as a prison for prostitutes during the Middle Ages. 4. The Silver cap Silverhättan. A shining name for the City Wall’s most recent tower. Orders came from Germany for the erection of this defence tower that faces the north and served as key fortification for securing the beaches along the part of the wall facing the sea. 5. The Snäckgärd’s Gate Snäckgärdsporten. A stunning view can be seen from here for those of you who are not afraid of heights. Thanks to a newly reconstructed walkway you can walk the parapets like one of the

guards of the old city. A model replica can also be seen here. 6. The Lübeck breach Lübeckerbräschen. Here the wall stands in ruins after an attack by Lübecker and Hansan who breached the defences and ousted the pirate Sören Norrby from his base in Visby. 7. The Saint George gate S:t Göransporten. city gates with its origins from 1280. During the crusades the outer wooden gate was fortified with a portcullis. 10. The Coin house Mynthuset. This may have been the customs office and is thought to be older than the wall itself. 11. The Well gate Brunnsporten. Water has often been scarce in Visby as the number of water wells inside the wall is limited. This gate was built to allow access to a well outside the eastern part of the wall. 12. The Dalman tower Dalmansporten. This seventeen-meter-tall tower was an important landmark for seafarers.

13. The East gate Österport. Today this gate connects the more traditional shopping streets of the old Inner City with the newer shopping area Öster Centrum, under the collective name ’Visby Center’.

16. Valdemar’s wall Valdemarsmuren. This is where the Danish king Valdemar Atterdag tore down the wall in 1361. His conquest of Visby was a triumph.

19. Visborg Castle Visborgs slott. Around 1411 this powerful fortress was built and used until the Danes blew it up in 1679. A model replica can be found in Slottsparken.

14. The School gate Skolporten. This gate was opened in the late 1800s for easier access to the school built outside the wall.

17. The South gate Söderport. This is where the main road to the southern part of Gotland passes through. Just inside the gate is Södertorg – the south square.

20. Little Beach gate Lilla Strandporten. When the old harbour was located here, this was the entrance to a square with a market place, The City Hall and Stock Exchange.

15. The Kajsar tower Kajsarporten. The most imposing tower along the eastern part of the wall. Previously used as a jail but subsequently deemed too primitive and small.

18. The Sconce gate Skansporten. In 1721, fear of the Russians led to development of this part of the wall. This gate is named after the sconce next to it.

Very similar to how it looks today… In the winter there is an artificial ice rink within the old stone walls.

Northern Gotland is a magical mix of quiet stony bays and some of the island´s most popular beaches with squeaky white sand. In the north it is evident that the historically important stone industry still has a hold. You can find impressive quarries of limestone and marble, some still operating and some that are now filled with emerald blue water perfect for swimming in on a hot sunny day. If you are heading north, you should go all the way to the top – to the island of Fårö located just off the northern tip of Gotland. There is a car ferry that runs continuously in the summertime, but during the busy period it is a good idea to get there early to avoid queuing. While you are at it, take the opportunity to go to Gotska Sandön, the uninhabited island of sand directly to the north of Gotland out in the Baltic – it is well worth the effort. Stay for a day or two to explore vast deserted sandy beaches and beautiful untouched nature. 54 gotlandsguiden.se

30. Jungfrun – the Maiden ”rauk” Jungfrun (the maiden), at 12 metres tall, is Gotland’s largest rauk – the local word for a limestone seastack. She is situated on the edge of a cliff, a total of 26 metres above sea level. ”In the 11th century Likajr the Wise brought home a captive, the young boy named Helge, who after having spent a lot of time with Likajr’s daughter Öllegard, fell in love with her. Likajr did not appreciate this and put Öllegard up on the top of the rauk and told Helge he could only marry her if he could manage to fetch her down. Helge was brave and accepted the challenge, but on the way down, whilst carrying Öllegard on his back, he was shot in the head with an arrow from Likajr’s bow and the couple fell into the sea and were swallowed by the waves.”

CENTRAL GOTLAND There is nothing middle-of-the-road about central Gotland, where you will find countless unique and intriguing places to visit. Gotland’s number one bustling sandy Tofta Beach attracts many visitors, and on the east coast the old spa resort Ljugarn is a magnet for campers and beach lovers. For golfers, the Visby Golf Club on the west coast is an absolute must; the course is internationally known for its challenging holes and beautiful setting. On the east coast you’ll also find Grogarnsberget, a nature reserve with amazing walking trails offering breath-taking views. 72 gotlandsguiden.se

62. Big Karlsö island Stora Karlsö. Like the main island of Gotland, Stora Karlsö dates back 400 million years and is mainly built up of fossilised coral reefs. This is one of the top ”must see” sights on Gotland. The easiest way to get there is to take the small ferry that leaves from Klintehamn, 30 km south of Visby. You can stay overnight in the old Lighthouse, which has stunning views out to sea. If you happen to be there in late June you may catch the remarkable guillemots ”Sillgrissla” forcing their young to fly. They literally push them out of their nests from where they perch high up on the cliff walls. But don’t worry - if they don’t fly on the first try, their fat-filled chests usually save them from dying when they hit the stony ground below. However, once on the ground they have to navigate past hungry seagulls to get out to sea where their anxious parents await them. Exciting and frightening - truly a taste of the wild. You can walk freely around the island and enjoy an evening at the restaurant as a treat. HC

Högklint offers a magnificent view over the sea and Visby. From the top there is a steep staircase down that grazing sheep sometimes took to the ”Plateau of the starving goat” thus named because goats who made it down here couldn’t always make it up again and were thereby doomed to starvation. Here you can also visit the ”Rövar Lilja Cave”. Infamous Jonas Nilsson Lilja used this spot as a hiding place during his robbing raids in the Gotlandic countryside.

This is where the famous Gotland native horses, named Gotlandsruss, live. They are the oldest breed of horse in Sweden and today there are approximately 50 mares in the herd. When the foals are born during spring and summer, their numbers rise to around 80.
