Reformed Big Church

O n e o f t h e m o s t i m p o rtant motifs in the coat of arms, the phoenix symbolizes a city continually being born again. Yo u w i l l c o m e a c r o s s t h e image in various places such as the mosaic, the ornamentation of the Millennial Fountain and the streetcars.

D e b r e c e n ’s s y m b o l i s o n e o f t h e n a t i o n ’s l a r g e s t R e f o r m e d churches, a building of major historic significance. It was here that Lajos Kossuth read out the Declaration of Independence on April 14, 1849. The wing chair used by the Regent-President o n t h a t g l o r i o u s o c c a s i o n i s o n e o f t h e c h u r c h ’s m o s t p r e c i o u s relics. The main structure has been rebuilt several times. To d a y ’s f a m i l i a r C l a s s i c i s t f o r m w a s d e v e l o p e d a f t e r t h e g r e a t f i r e o f 1 8 0 2 . Yo u c a n e n j o y m a g n i f i c e n t v i e w s o f t h e c i t y f r o m the top of the towers, or the steel bridge behind the tympanum. If you are courageous enough to attempt the steep climb up, your added bonus will be a spectacular close-up of the 4.6ton Rákóczi Bell. In addition to regular services, exhibits of r e l i g i o u s h i s t o r y, o r g a n c o n c e r t s a n d o t h e r m u s i c a l e v e n t s a r e also on the schedule. The church has held the status of national monument since 2013.

Kossuth Square

D e b r e c e n ’s M a i n S q u a r e f e a t u r e s t h e i c o n i c group of statues erected to commemorate Lajos Kossuth, the huge mosaic depicting the c i t y ’s c o a t o f a r m s , m a d e b y p l a c i n g t o g e t h e r 1 8 0 , 0 0 0 p i e c e s o f Ve n e t i a n g l a s s , t h e Millennial Fountain as well as the Art Nouveau building of Hotel Aranybika. The extended

walking zone that includes the square is the venue of countless cultural events from spring till autumn including several food festivals and the Debrecen Flower Parade. This is also w h e r e t h e c i t y ’s C h r i s t m a s t r e e i s p l a c e d a t the beginning of the festive season.

D e b r e c e n ’s M a i n S t r e e t w a s s u i t a b l e f o r t r a f f i c f o r t w o c e n t u r i e s t h a n k s t o a 6 5 0 - m e t e r- l o n g a n d 6 t o 7-meter wide elevated wooden walkway erected in the 1600s. A small section of the ancient “mud bridge,” now on display outside Hotel Aranybika, is a peerless archeological relic.

The original house of worship was redesigned several times after it had burned down. The final structure was finished in 1876. Its onion-dome spire was destroyed by a windstorm in 1907. The builders later decided to replace it with castellated parapet. It has been dubbed by locals as Csonka (truncated) Church ever since.

B u i l t i n C l a s s i c i s t s t y l e , o n e o f D e b r e c e n ’s most prominent architectural relics is the City Hall building. The city as well as the Hall played an important role in the e v e n t s o f t h e 1 9 4 8 / 4 9 R e v o l u t i o n a n d Wa r of Independence. It provided temporary h e a d q u a r t e r s f o r t h e n a t i o n ’s D e f e n s e Committee. Its “chamber of the secret archives” was actually the hiding place o f t h e H o l y C r o w n o f H u n g a r y. To d a y, t h e edifice houses the City Assembly and the M a y o r ’s O f f i c e .

Piac Street D e b r e c e n ’s M a i n S t r e e t w a s t h e p r o u d v e n u e o f t h e famous town fairs for 300 years starting in the 16th c e n t u r y. To d a y ’s c i t y s c a p e , h o w e v e r, i s d e f i n e d b y the former merchant houses erected at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The pink office building o f D e b r e c e n ’s F i r s t S a v i n g s B a n k ( o n t h e c o r n e r o f Kossuth Street) and the twin tenement blocks with the copper spires (on the corner of Simonffy Street) spectacularly stand out against the background of slightly gaudy downtown houses. 9

Synagogues

Debrecen Jewish Congregation i s H u n g a r y ’s l a r g e s t I s r a e l i t e community outside the capital. The o l d e r o f D e b r e c e n ’s t w o s u r v i v i n g synagogues, the Orthodox synagogue was built in Pásti Street in 1894. Not only a holy shrine, the synagogue is also a tourist destination as well as a venue of exhibitions, conferences, and concerts. Its yard houses the Holocaust Memorial to commemorate the Debrecen victims of the genocide. The compound also includes a prayer

room from 1910. Its old basement mikvah has been repurposed as a kosher wine tavern and exhibit space. The unit which had functioned as a kosher butcher shop up to the late 1980s serves as a display room and r e s t i n g c h a m b e r. E r e c t e d i n 1 9 0 9 in Kápolnás Street, the synagogue “status quo ante” shares a plot with the former Jewish High School (now Yo u t h C e n t e r ) . T h e c o n g r e g a t i o n ’s headquarters includes a guesthouse which is often frequented by pilgrims traveling on the holy journey from Debrecen to Nagykálló.

The “Gerundium” The “gerundium” is the heaviest object on display in the school-history exhibit. Named after the complicated Latin conjugation system, the sturdy staffs were used by students serving as volunteer f i r e f i g h t e r s . Museum of Debrecen Reformed College Having functioned continuously as an educational institution since its establishment in 1538, the college is the cradle of Hungarian civilization. Designated as a national monument in 2013, it also features a museum that has permanent exhibits displaying the s c h o o l ’s h i s t o r y, s t u d e n t l i f e , a n d t h e r e l i g i o u s a r t o f t h e R e f o r m e d C h u r c h i n t h e Tr a n s - T i s z a R e g i o n . The Memorial Garden occupies the leafy plot between the Big Church and the College. Here stands the s t a t u e o f I s t v á n B o c s k a i , P r i n c e o f Tr a n s y l v a n i a , who settled his “Hajdú” warriors in the vicinity of Debrecen. Another memorial commemorates 40 Protestant preachers sentenced to hard labor during the anti-Reformist revolts. As a high point of his Debrecen visit in August 1991, Pope John Paul II laid a wreath on the base of the pillar to symbolize peace and reconciliation among Christian denominations. 15

Debrecen House of Literature & Medgyessy Ferenc Memorial Museum On display at Debrecen House of Literature, the new permanent e x h i b i t t i t l e d “ D r e a m i n g H u n g a r i a n s – S t o r i e s f r o m D e b r e c e n ’s Literary History” gives a comprehensive picture of the careers of t h e c i t y ’s m o s t i n f l u e n t i a l m e n o f l e t t e r s d i s p l a y i n g o l d m a n u s c r i p t s , relics and virtual games. Land Inhabited by Muses

Big Forest has long been inhabited by the Muses of poetry and served as a rich hunting ground for academics in pursuit of exciting research topics. The statues of most of these men of letters are on display in the “literary sculpture park” on Medgyessy Promenade.

Nagyerdei Amphitheater The dense green foliage in Big Forest will provide an attractive background of theatrical performances, contemporary music concerts, opera shows, and outdoor movie screenings from spring through fall.

Nagyerdei Stadium The multifunctional arena with a seating capacity of 20,000 is located in its namesake park. Boasting state-of-the-art architectural features, it nicely snuggles up to the surrounding g r e e n e r y. T h e m o s t s p e c t a c u l a r a n c i l l a r y e l e m e n t o f t h e compound is the â&#x20AC;&#x153;suspension sidewalk.â&#x20AC;? Complete with a running track, the 1,100-m-long structure skirts the entire stadium building at an average height of 7 meters. Mist Theater In the immediate vicinity of Nagyerdei Arena, a one-of-a-kind attraction beckons from spring through fall. The multimedia fountain, or “Mist Theatre,” boasts a 30×10-m, fan-shaped curtain of water vapor which can be used as a functional movie screen to show clips of Debrecen as well as special laser installations. The more adventurous might want to try the stepping stones across the basin on sweltering summer days.

O n e o f t h e n a t i o n ’s f i v e r e s e a r c h universities, UD celebrated its centenary in 2012. The glass-ceilinged cour d’honneur of the main edifice, built in Eclectic and Neo-Baroque style, is skirted by an arcaded corridor system, whose walls are inscribed with the names of t h e s c h o o l ’s m o s t r e n o w n e d p r o f e s s o r s and former students. The fountain in the spacious French-style park in front of the building plays a special role in student tradition: Graduates are supposed to take a plunge in its pool after their finals.

Botanical Garden at UD U D ’s B o t a n i c a l G a r d e n b e h i n d t h e m a i n c a m p u s b u i l d i n g w a s established in 1928 when the original garden that had belonged t o t h e R e f o r m e d C o l l e g e c e a s e d t o e x i s t . Ördögárok

L i t e r a l l y n a m e d “ t h e d e v i l ’s trench,” Ördögárok is one of the last remnants of an ancient entrenchment system. An exhibition point is located by Zsuzsi Railway line, near Csereerdő stop. Legend has it that King Csörsz was allowed to marry his beloved princess on one condition only: He had to arrive at the betrothal ceremony by ship. Proving that love knows no limits, Csörsz had a canal constructed to link the Danube and Tisza Rivers.

Pancakes Filled with Meat Ragout à la Hortobágy The name of this delicacy may sound fitting, but i t i s n o t n a t i v e t o H o r t o b á g y. T h e m o d e r n v e r s i o n of the recipe was, strangely enough, inspired by the 1958 Brussels Expo: A touch of romanticized “puszta” feeling stuffed into savory pancakes and served with a rich sauce liberally seasoned with paprika.

A designated UNESCO World Heritage site, Hortobágy National Park is the perfect archetype of pristine natural landscape. This is the place where everyone longs to find refuge from the m o n o t o n y o f m o d e r n h u m a n e x i s t e n c e . I n t h e n a t i o n ’s o l d e s t a n d b i g g e s t n a t i o n a l p a r k h e r d s m e n ’s t r a d i t i o n s a r e s t i l l p a r t o f p e o p l e ’s m e a n s o f s u b s i s t e n c e a n d n o t m e r e p r o m o t i o n a l gimmicks. Hortobágy has been acknowledged a European Destination of Excellence (EDEN) site.

“Nine-Hole” Bridge Legend has it that the “Nine-Hole” Bridge came into being when the nine lovers of an infamous outlaw (with the local gendarmes closing in on him) held hands and helped their beau cross the river on their shoulders and arms. After his lucky escape, the hapless damsels turned into stone.

A t r u l y i c o n i c l a n d m a r k i n H o r t o b á g y, t h e g r a n d e s t a n d l o n g e s t of similar Hungarian stone constructions was built in 1833 a c c o r d i n g t o t h e p l a n s o f F e r e n c P o v o l n y. T h e n e a r b y a r e a i s the venue of the renowned annual fair and open-air market of handicraft traditionally held on August 20. Hortobágy herdsmen are called different names depending of what kind of animals they tend. A “csikós” looks after horses, a “gulyás” cattle. A “juhász” herds flocks of sheep, while a “kondás” cares for pigs. Practitioners of each trade wear hats of different shape, but they are always sturdy affairs: they won’t lose their form even if someone should tread on them.

It has always been quite an event whenever D e b r e c e n ’s S a t e C o a c h ceremoniously rolled i n t o H o r t o b á g y. T h e elite group of its most famous passengers includes Franz Joseph I and Edward, Duke o f W i n d s o r. T h e y t o o k rides on the carriage drawn by a team of five horses in 1852/1890 a n d 1 9 3 7 , r e s p e c t i v e l y. w w w. h n p . h u

Hortobágy Big Inn Hortobágy Big Inn is the oldest and grandest of these traditional watering holes where you can sample “puszta cuisine” in its original locale. The exhibit room presents images and artifacts to illustrate the long-past “csárda” milieu populated b y t o u g h d e n i z e n s o f t h e p r a i r i e . Yo u c a n e v e n g e t your pictures taken rigged out in traditional garb. T h e t h e m a t i c i t i n e r a r y d u b b e d “ T h e Tr a i l o f I n n s ” includes stops to display exhibits at the Kadarcs and Meggyes Inn Museums.

Hortobágy National Park Visitor Center & Craftsmen’s Yard Yo u c a n g e t d e t a i l e d i n f o r m a t i o n o n t h e programs available in the various tourist spots of the region including how to see National Park areas which are open to v i s i t o r s . Yo u c a n a l s o c h e c k o u t a m u l ti-media show presenting the uniquely rich wildlife of the puszta including the

exhibit called “The World of Cranes.” If you’re into the arts, why don’t you explore the workshops set up in the yard where local artisans put their trades on display? A wide range of their products and other merchandise lays up for grabs in the gift shop.

Hortobágy Herdsmen’s Museum & Exhibit-in-the-Round The former wagon shed now houses a museum displaying artifacts characteristic of the life of herdsmen of bygone days. The adjoining circular building gives home to an a u t h e n t i c d i s p l a y o f t h e r e g i o n ’s r i c h c r a f t s m e n ’s t r a d i t i o n .

Sweep-pole Wells

T h e s t o r y o f t h e e q u e s t r i a n s t u n t d u b b e d “ p u s z t a f i v e ” b e g a n w i t h a d r a w i n g b y a rtist Ludwig Koch. The artwork depicts a team of five horses racing at full speed and controlled by a cowboy standing on the backs of the two rear animals. Although the drawing preceded actual performances of the daredevil act, the image has become a w e l l - k n o w n s y m b o l o f H o r t o b á g y.

Hortobágy Wildlife Park – Puszta Safari The park serves as a reserve for animal species that had populated the region before human habitation and encroaching civilization drove them off. Their ranks are completed by species that still inhabit the wilderness areas of the National Park.

Over the past 50 years, the festival has featured over 500 flower floats, more than 1,000 Hungarian and foreign troupes, several million flowers, tens of thousands of staff and volunteers as well as hundreds of “flowery” p r o g r a m s . One of the most popular Hungarian summer events, the renowned Flower Parade celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2016. This week-long extravaganza displays the amazing talents of domestic artistic troupes as well as performers from all corners of the world. The revelries reach their climax on August 20. This is the actual parade day when the self-propelled floats carrying gigantic flower arrangements depicting fairy t a l e s , l e g e n d s a n d o t h e r s t o r i e s r o l l a l o n g t h e c i t y ’s a v e n u e s accompanied by Hungarian and overseas troupes of dancers and musicians. The multi-stage show which involves hundreds of performers clad in traditional garb culminates in a boisterous street party complete with fireworks. Those who would like to admire the flower floats once again and take some selfies do not miss the outdoor display on August 21 in front of the Old City Hall.
