3.8 billion years

of research and development at our fingertips provides designers with ample amounts of information to find inspiraiton for the next opportunity. Design prompts do not always have an obvious problem and solution framework, but can open our eyes to fascinating new aspirational design briefs. Nature and Biomimicry will essentially become the backbone of our design project.

Though we have just entered the

technology

revolution

within the current century, the rate of advancement exponentially increases. Every decade that we progress in the twenty-first century tends to evolve leaps from the previous generation of technology and emerging products. We have approached a very interesting time in our scope of existence where the technology we have available have actually surpasses the consumer applications and prospective visions. What we do with the emerging technology from entities such as MIT Media Lab and Google ATAP is up to the visionaries.

We sought out to design a product within the domestic environment and visited several households in the Bay Area of California. The homes ideally had three generations living under the same roof and were home owners in order to focus the scope of user cases. In particular, we maintained a keen eye in order to identify

thresholds

that may have given us

a clue of insight into the owner’s behavioral changes. Whether it was through observation or interviewing the owner, we tried to pick up cues as to any needs or wants they had expressed.

Mind Map Mind mapping was a useful tool in starting a converstation among the team members by having a physical medium through which decisions could be made. It helped us visualize the breadth and depth of our opportunities, values, and goals as a team. We identified 4 major core values that we had in our scope. 1) Save money 2) Save time 3) Provide knowledge 4) Provide assistance

25

Neri Oxman Design as Nature. Our design and manufacturing process that has excelled since the days of industrial revolution are proving to be unsustainable and unideal. When looking to nature, it essentially flips our process upside down on its head.

Algorithmic Design We wanted to let nature inspire the core aesthetics of our product, if not drive it entirely. As the designers, we only wanted to step in when appropriate with minimal styling input to add the personal touch and flare. With this approach in mind, we expected to run into potential difficulties down the road of finely modeling a very organic design. Our strategy was to utilize CAD software such as Rhino 3D with Grasshopper Plug-in.

A growing family within restricted home space. As the number of family members living under the same household increases, they approach a threshold limit. Beyond that limit, they are forced to take action. Our team seeks to design for one of the possible solutions to facilitate home improvement.

Open source networks benefit greatly by sharing information among many participants, and typically nurture fast growth. This model could be applied to share and develop biomimetic build models.

The System: Construction Drone construction may range from micro to macro scale, therfore the drones themselves should be designed to excel in specific tasks appropriate to their function. Small units come together for large community projects when not in use in the domestic household setting.

What is a Threshold? “

You and I may never have met before. I have no idea where you are or how you’re consuming this book. I will, however, venture a guess: Wherever you may be reading this, you’re not doing it in the shower. If I’m wrong, well, bravo for you. But if I’m right, my question to you is this: Why aren’t you in the shower right now?

Concepts: Define and Refine Based on our prospective infrastructure 5-10 years out in the future, we brainstormed 10 further concepts. All of the ideas were at a conceptual, blue sky level where details and feasability were not of major concern. 1) Drones are task/function specific 2) Drone relation b/w time & money 3) 3D printer drones 4) Growing/cultivating as a manufacturing process 5) Micro vs Maacro scale drones 6) Drones connected to central database 7) Open source community - sharing biomimetic techniques 8) Drone work optimization 9) Working cell diagram 10) Fractals can be blueprint for arrangement

(n.) the effect of filtered sunlight through leaves of trees.

78

DSID128_Fall 2015

After many days of pondering and looking inwards to for an experience we were trying to create, we realized the team should take an impulsive trip to Big Basin’s redwood forests for some inspiration. It allowed us to step away from the design office and first-handedly feel the majesty of nature herself. We were enamoured by the dappling effect of sunlight through the trees, which created a beautiful pattern of arbitrary shapes on the dirt and road.

79

Murray’s Law and Fractals On the technical side of nature inspirations, we came across Murray’s Law which delves into the relationship of the radii between parent branch and child branch. Though we did not immerse into the depth of the principle’s calculations, the general idea of optimizing paths was very intriguing. Fractals do not always exist in linear forms, and is a much broader application within nature. The common thread across fractal patterns is the repetition of a single common denominating shape or form.

80

DSID128_Fall 2015

81

Voronoi The Voronoi diagram is equally intriguing and astounding to wrap our heads around. The seemingly random skeleton-like structures of corals and tropical fungi are commonly voronoi structures. Likewise in more everyday things like foam bubbles, veins in leaves, and even the way dry mud cracks. Sites (black dot) are the central points of an area. Sites are connected by lines (solid). Those lines are then intersected by lines (hashed) perpendicular to them. The interweb of those lines are what create voronoi.
