Farewell Mrs. Rose

Q & A with Reconstructive Language Chair, Mrs. Kathleen Rose How did you find out about The Gow School? Even though I grew up in Elma, just a few miles from South Wales, I never knew the school existed until 1978. It was a well-kept secret in those days. When my then-boyfriend, Paul accepted a teaching position, I became acquainted with Gow. Our Saturday night dates consisted of riding the big yellow cheese to the mall for a movie with the students. What was your first job at the school and what year was it? I began working at Gow as the book store manager in 1982, when Vesta Gow Howard retired and turned the business over to the school. How many years have you worked here? Over 30 years! Wow! I can’t believe it! Where have you lived on campus? We lived in Main Building (currently the infirmary), Ellis, Cornwall and Willow Terrace. It was a wonderful environment for our growing family. When did you train as an RL teacher and with whom? Lowell Lundell (“Link”) trained me during a 2 week period during the summer of 1989. Mr. Szafnicki was also in that training. What has been the most rewarding part of working at Gow? I can’t help but fall in love with my students each year. It is so rewarding to see young people striving to learn and improve their skills with the written word, then to be able to see them outside of class with their individual talents and personalities. However, I also must acknowledge that working amid this amazing faculty team is so uplifting and inspiring. Finally, seeing the graduates go on to be successful adults is especially the best reward. Having students such as Mr. Howe, Mr. Simms, Mr. Rausch prove to be such excellent teachers and Mr. Cotter the champion admissions director has been so gratifying. Why have you stayed at Gow all of these years? Mr. Rose and I made a commitment years ago to The Gow School to spend our careers in South Wales. As we all know, this school is like no other, and we were proud and honored to be a part of it all. What will you do when you retire? Oh boy! I am working on prioritizing (and limiting) my list which includes: Substitute teach at Gow for RL so that I can stay in touch with the students! More time with family, (especially with a new baby on the way! ) Continuing volunteer activities with 4-H and SWFC Artistic endeavors (photography, painting, sewing, you name it!) Learning French and maybe taking more college courses Food Preservation (I want to become a Master Preservationist) Travel Holy Mackerel! I will need to hang onto a structured daily schedule! Mrs. Rose will retire to South Wales, N.Y. to spend time with her husband Paul, three children, two daughter in laws and 4 (soon to be five) grandchildren. We are so grateful for her years of dedication to the students and in the field of dyslexia and language remediation.
