OW AT A GLANCE

CONNECTING OUR GOW COMMUNITY

Welcome!

We hope this edition of Gow at a Glance finds you healthy and strong during this uncertain time in our world. For many of us, there is great comfort in connecting with old friends, sharing stories, and being part of a community. We hope this update will give you a chance to connect with Gow and each other. The Gow campus has been quiet since the students left for spring break on March 15 and we are looking forward to their return. Gow faculty are sharing course content via distance learning, but of course we know that there is nothing better than in-person classroom instruction and the structure of our Gow community. Students will return to campus as soon as government officials allow schools to resume. We always enjoy hearing from you and would love to include an update about you (work, family, etc.) in the next Gow Life magazine. To share your news and photos, click the link below!

It is always inspiring to bring Gow alumni, families, and friends together, either at events on campus or around the country. Although we will be rescheduling our March Gow events in CA, AZ, and TX, here are some photos from two special evenings in Durham, NC and Charleston, WV.

Technology can be a powerful tool to assist students with any sort of learning difference. In particular, the Chrome web browser allows users to install a wide variety of web extensions that provide tools that can help all learners, regardless of ability level. Click the link below and take a look at over 30 Chrome web extensions that can assist students with things such as text to speech, reading comprehension, and focus.

A special thank you to owner and executive chef Matthew Kelley '94 for hosting us at his marvelous restaurant Mateo Bar de Tapas in Durham, NC on March 6!

GOW AT A GLANCE

Touching Base Last week, alumni from the classes of '68 - '17 shared inspiring video updates on our Gow Connect page. To view those videos and other historic photos from campus, click the link below and like our page! Thank you to all those who have contributed videos so far!

It was wonderful to “see” each other (some for the first time in fifty years!) and to catch up on careers, families, hobbies, and more. Thank you to all those who joined the call!

Gow-Connect You can also view past Gow yearbooks or past issues of the Gow Life magazine online! Click the link below to enjoy!

Gow-Archives During the school year, students and faculty gather each day to discuss a lesson presented by the headmaster and to hear sports and activity announcements before heading to lunch. To continue that integral part of our routine and to keep us all connected, Mr. Rogers is hosting a daily video call for faculty and students who are at home in 11 different time zones! As Gow students and faculty are working together to accomplish academic goals through distance learning, Mr. Rogers is doing a great job of keeping our community motivated and inspired!

Zooming with Gow While we had to cancel a number of in-person alumni events around the country this March, the engagement of our alumni community has never been stronger as we have launched our Gow Connection Series through Zoom. These online get-togethers have been a powerful way to connect with alumni, families, and current/former faculty members. We will be posting more information about the Gow Connection Series on our website in a few days. Last Friday, more than 50 alumni from the classes of 1958 - 1972 joined a three hour Zoom call to reconnect, catch up on the latest news at Gow, and to share inspiring stories about their days at their beloved alma mater.

The following is a list of some of the upcoming calls we have scheduled! If you’d like us to host a Zoom call for your classmates, please send a note to development@gow.org. There is no better time to reconnect with friends and Gow! April 14 at 4:00 p.m. – Class of 1987 April 14 at 7:00 p.m. – Classes of 1968 - 1972 April 15 at 7:00 p.m. – Class of 1992 April 16 at 7:00 p.m. – Class of 2008 April 21 at 7:00 p.m. – Class of 2017

An Opportunity to Support Gow Although students are currently away from campus, our faculty are busy writing lesson plans, presenting video classes, hosting advisor meetings, answering parent and student phone calls, and correcting and returning papers. During this challenging time in our world, we know that it is more important than ever to teach, inspire, and mentor our Gow Students. This is an uncertain economic climate for everyone. Although Gow's students are away, costs to maintain our campus, pay faculty and staff, and ensure a strong program, remain largely the same. We know not all of you will be in a position to do so, but if you are, we ask you to consider the incredibly generous act of donating by clicking the "Support Gow" link. Each time we face challenges as a community, we are reminded of Gow’s resilience. Because of you, we know that we will emerge from this as a stronger school.
