Rethinking Learning. Reigniting Lives. Dear Friends, We are grateful to those who, through generous gifts of money and time, inspire Gow’s programming, maintain a vibrant campus, and insure that students receive the enriching education and skills required to succeed in college and beyond. This edition of Gow Life Magazine recognizes the generosity and commitment of those who make Gow’s life-changing educational programs possible. We are forever grateful. We live in a rapidly evolving world. Technology impacts every aspect of our lives from the moment our phone alarm rings in the morning. Our students were born in the midst of the digital revolution and can’t remember a world without Facebook, Instagram, likes, and 24hour news. One of my beliefs is that there is nothing better than face-to-face communication and that is best achieved when phones are put away. Gow students and faculty need and deserve a campus without the distractions of cell phones and social media. Although this idea can cause momentary shock for some new students and visiting guests, nearly everyone quickly embraces the idea and the novelty of being unplugged. We are a school about communication and I am so proud of the work our faculty and staff do to encourage these skills in our students. Every morning at breakfast, the dining hall is buzzing with conversation. Faculty and students have assigned seats at breakfast and lunch which provides for in depth conversations and adult guidance about table manners, healthy eating habits, and the art of communication. What an opportunity for our faculty, staff and students to learn more about each other, our families, travel, hobbies and hopes for the future.

Our school continues to evolve to best prepare our students for tomorrow’s world. Although we can’t imagine the professions of the future, it’s safe to believe that mastery of language and communication will never be obsolete. Our mission continues: to modernize our campus and build needed teaching, athletic, artistic, and living spaces; to adding new programs that prepare our students to imagine and embrace their futures. We couldn’t do this without your belief and financial support. On behalf of Gow’s students, faculty and staff, I thank you for your continued belief in Gow’s life-changing mission. Warm regards,

M. Bradley Rogers, Jr. Headmaster

The 5 years I spent at Gow shaped my future... and the future of my own son who attended 30 years after me. I am forever grateful for the quality education I received at Gow and continue to cherish the lifelong friends and mentors I met there.

Grandparents Day 2019 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------Grandparents Day was celebrated September 21 with nearly 100 special friends and grandparents on campus. This day offered guests a chance to attend classes, participate in an all-school assembly, learn more about Gow at a Q&A with Mr. Rogers, and cheer for Gow’s sports teams. A perfect day to welcome special guests to Gow, and to engage them firsthand in Gow’s positive and supportive learning community.

We are so

THANKFUL

for you!

Dear friends, This magazine celebrates those who made gifts during Gow’s 2018–19 fiscal year. Donations enable Gow to provide innovative programming, maintain an impressive physical plant, and offer scholarship assistance to 41% of students. Our goal is to engage alumni, parents and others who recognize the importance of Gow’s programs and want to support them. We are thankful for dynamic leadership in our Alumni and Parent Associations. This valuable network offers advice, internships, and opportunities for alumni and current students. With thanks to those who have hosted Gow events around the country, these relationships are stronger than ever. If you haven’t yet done so, please visit Gow’s website (gow.org), on Facebook (including Gow Connect for our alumni), and follow us on Instagram. Most importantly, please send us your current email and address, and forward updated news (work, family, travels etc.) so we can include it in the next Gow Life magazine. These are easy ways to connect with the school and each other. Pictured: Gayle Hutton with Marcy Hinand (mom of Duncan Cady ‘19)

OUT AND ABOUT - What’s New at Gow? Firepit and Patio by Weston Dining Hall

Thanks to the generosity of the Class of 2019 and their families, a stamped concrete patio and firepit were installed in front the Weston Dining Hall. This is the perfect spot for watching sporting events and the sunset over campus!

Girls’ Volleyball Team

Having just completed their first season under the direction of Coaches Chafin and Bennett, the team learned more about the game, received new uniforms, and played some invigorating matches.

Trackman Golf Swing Analyzer

This state-of-the-art analytical tool helps members of the golf team to improve their shots and analyze their game. The Trackman is located on the squash courts in the Gow Center during the off-season.

Gow Cycling Kit

Designed specifically for men and women, the recently designed Gow cycling kit features long and short sleeved jerseys, bib shorts and a cycling hat. For more information, see page 31. To order, visit https://shop.vergesport.com/us-en/account/login.

Thanks to several generous donors including Mrs. Anne Moot (the wife of Welles ‘39), Gow has purchased a beautiful piano and created a concert series for our community. Mrs. Moot and her duo piano partner gave a concert at Gow in October. 6 The Gow Life Magazine Visit us at gow.org

Planned Giving at Gow

WHAT IS A PLANNED GIFT?

Regardless of your life circumstances or estate size, your Planned Gift may be the most important document you create. A Planned Gift is a charitable instrument designed (preferably with professional advice) to optimize your financial, tax, and estate wishes. Planned Gifts help donors to maximize their charitable giving and minimize taxes. You can stipulate this gift in your will as either a set amount or percentage of your estate (called a bequest), or make a gift of life insurance or retirement funds during your life.

WHY HAVE A PLANNED GIFT?

Estate planning offers tax benefits for you and your family, and ensures that your assets are distributed to the people and institutions that are most important to you. Your gift can be unrestricted (so that Gow can use it where needed most) or restricted to a program such as scholarship or endowment. You may create a fund in your name or in honor or memory of someone else.

WAYS TO MAKE A PLANNED GIFT TO GOW Designate a Gift to Gow in your Will

This is one of the easiest ways to make an estate gift. Simply ask your attorney to review the following wording and include it in your will: “I give and bequeath to The Gow School (Tax ID# 16-1034793), located in South Wales, New York, the sum of $______ OR ______% of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate.

Donate a Life Insurance Policy

Donate a policy that has been paid off or name Gow as your beneficiary. If you make the premium payments, they become deductions and the policy’s value is removed from your estate. You could also sell an unneeded insurance policy and donate the proceeds, earning an immediate taxdeduction.

Donate your IRA

If you are age 70½ and have to take a Required Minimum Distribution from your IRA distribution, you can donate that to Gow. This will reduce your adjusted gross income and tax burden.

Make Gow a Beneficiary of Your Retirement Plan

Leaving your retirement plan or IRA (or a portion of it) to Gow or naming Gow as the recipient of your retirement plan after your lifetime (or following the deaths of you and your spouse), avoids all estate and income taxes on the plan assets. If you name Gow as the beneficiary of the remainder of your retirement plan at your death, 100% goes to Gow.

Please consult your professional advisor to determine which Planned Giving option is most appropriate for you.

If you have already included Gow in your estate plan, please let us know so we can recognize your generosity. If you would like further information about Planned Giving, please contact Gayle Hutton, Director of Development at 716.687.2074 or ghutton@gow.org. Thank you! The Gow Life Magazine

BUTTERCUP FARM Written by Bill Hoke ‘58 A note about this piece: About 1990, Bill Hoke wrote a poem about The Gow School using the name of the original land where the school was located, Buttercup Farm. He sent the poem to the school, and it was just recently rediscovered. In re-reading this remembrance, Bill says, “From my two years at Gow, now more than 60 years ago, I was stuck by how indelible these memories are. And how alive the people still feel. Norman Howard walking from his house to his study for Latin II. The morning song. That lonesome train whistle heading for Pennsylvania. Good times mostly, and for me, academic salvation. I hope these memories from an old boy resonate with some.” Please note: those items highlighted in blue reference the Reconstructive Language cards - the conerstone of Gow’s remediation program.

I - BITTERSWEET It is Sunday after church before chicken and yellow gravy dinner. It is deep in snow or on a fall/spring afternoon. We are quiet, momentarily writing home, one-page letters awkwardly, in pencil, disguising our misspellings, erasing, writing big, our “I am fines” hiding the “Why am I heres”. a,ab,be,de,e,re,se,pre,di,dia,di,co, pro bi II – DAYS WITHOUT END Oatmeal, piles of dry white toast, metal pitchers of cocoa and milk. Someone, and eventually everyone, will drop a tray and we applaude wildly until a knife raps a glass and we are subdued. Fun comes stolen, at haphazard times, usually at someone else’s expense. Mail at 10:15, that wonderful stentorian voice: Mr. Brophy, Mr. Wilson, Mr. Brophy. He smells the envelope, smiles, and slides it across the round table by the front door. Mr. Brophy. He smiles. We laugh. Dear Bill: I’m going with a friend of my sister’s. He goes to college. You don’t know him. I don’t know what to say. I’m sorry. Love, Michele We cry. We had standard issued (parent purchased) blue bedspreads, but bed making perfection was not required. We had our own brooms and we used them daily. We did windows, floors, and anything else a master pointed at. Pay particular attention to the stairs, corners of rooms, food scraps under the kids’ tables. Do this room over again, then you can smoke. Mornings after breakfast and after cleanup, he would walk from his house, walking ramrod straight, walking precisely at the same time, convene us, reach into his right inside right hand pocket, read from his daily notes, you praying, fervently, you have not come to his attention from last night’s study all. Nothing escaped him. Then he would lead morning song and if – when – he got you not fully singing,

he would look directly at you, quizzically, eyebrows raised, like, get with the program. Singing was perfectly natural to him. It made his eyes sparkle, a remarkable moment. You can see how warm it was in there. We sang “Oh Susanna” as good as any senior class anywhere. At one meal – we rotated tables every few weeks – the rule was you could not put anything beyond your wrist on the table. Penalty was having the offending arm part raked by the masters usually dull serrated dinner knife. One night I caught the master reaching too far for the mashed potatoes and my ever-ready knife came out of my ribeye and chopped at his hand drawing a fine trail of blood. The table went silent. The dining room went silent as we were locked in stare. My eyes dropped. Not a high point in my 17 years. He said I might be able to be a writer. He also had a great twinkle in his eye, and would admit I had read more Hemingway than he. Later I realized he was having serious conversations with God. He was a very good man, one of those teachers you realize made a difference. He gave me an A in English, my first A in anything. Ann hates a small spa.. Jim likes machines. Al always loyal. III – STUDY HALL He patrols two main rooms, three side rooms alone; is tutor, proctor, father, sometimes older brother, sometimes mother, master, sir. He has heard every single excuse, knows your dad has not sent smoking permission, catches you sneaking a drag at break, knows his car will be Simonized on Saturday afternoon. One hour and 50 minutes to go. He has study hall tonight and his gum shoes are silent as he purposely goes from room to room, looking for trouble spots, potential troublemakers. He always pays particular attention to me, centered where he can see me from the kitchen hallway, between the two rooms. I am prepared with a full complement of yes sirs, no sirs and nothing 8

sirs. I know all about his temper. He is waiting to really catch me. Dear Dad: people have leopards for luncheon here. The new basement haircut isn’t cool, but the townies can’t see me go from bus to theater on Saturday night; they don’t go to our church on Sunday. We hear they want to fight and we go armed with knives and clubs, Skip comes out of nowhere, shouts them into submission. There is no fight. Where did Skip go so soon? Nine weeks to go: 100 hours of study hall until Christmas, more than I have studied in the past ten years, including kindergarten. Reading is no problem, reading comprehension is. The math is perfectly clear in my head, backwards on paper. Train A leaves the station at the same time as Train B. Why? Because… ad, con, ed, in, ob, sub, syn, dis Two Masters allow some humor in study hall. The three new ones don’t know our well-defined tricks and when they first work alone, pencils and erasers fly; you can even lean back in your straight chair, might pass a note, whisper a conspiracy, heretically exchange a math question. Latin translation. I kept asking my roommate for the Latin word for “the”. He falls for it every time, marveling at my perversity. There is no escape tricks and we are at the are at the mercy of their moods. One is newlywed and the break stretches on and on, indulging everyone. We think he got caught and we are back on schedule: one cigarette at the fireplace then we sit for the final hour, fidgeting. My geometry theorem is an impossible 15 proofs. My glove frozen to the rope goes handless into the rope window, comes out at the bottom, flattened by the 16 inch wheel rim. I spear it off the rope with my bamboo ski pole. It breaks. Dear dad. The ski patrol gets to pack the slope, edging sideways from bottom to top. We usually had sense enough not to antagonize our less moneyed opponents. Those schools had more to choose from. Did we ever play on a dry field with a dry ball? Unless you headed it perfectly, the wet leather thunked your head, giving you an unadmitted headache you would try to run off while their JV scored again, down the field in front of you. Towards the end of senior year, the game trips were bitter returns: we would definitely leave open the back door of the bus, the only emergency our haste to be away from it and at dinner where we had each other to console. You only called home in an emergency. Another loss did not qualify. Everyone could hear the conversation from the phone to Mr. Stockwell’s study. Hi mom, yes everything is going fine. No we lost the game. It’s all right. Worms work all over the world. No I didn’t say anything. Well thanks for calling. See you at Christmas. MORNING BREAK After morning break of milk (seniors later got coffee) and Phil’s rock hard gingersnaps, four of us would sit in a study waiting for Latin II. We would see him the moment he left his back door. No one moved. He came in the study door, rubbed his hands together, blew on them, hung up his coat, said good morning gentlemen. This was it. No refuge.

He was impeccably dressed, razor creases on pants, tie clip, Phi Beta Kappa fob - the closest I ever got one. He set an example. You read to him in Latin, meaning you said the words out loud; sometimes understanding them and he would prompt, correct, prompt, correct, wince, inhale and we slowly, ever so slowly, helped us help Caesar conquer Gaul. Gallia est omnis divisa in partis tres; quarum unam... He never chided or derided: his impatience was manifest only at the blackboard as he jabbed the conjugations, symmetrically filling the board and then, inhaling deeply, not erasing, but attacking the chalk. It fell in front of him, gender in perfect agreement. Amos, amas, amat Then mea patria est pulchra Deep down I honestly think he liked me. I think every boy ever met felt that the same sense of worth. If man has a greater gift than that, I have not yet to meet it.

very quiet and we cup our cigarettes in our hands in the event an errant master is out walking, or coming back from town, sometimes sober. “You want to go down and make some toast?” We have learned how to get into the Main Building kitchen downstairs and we put on the robe and slippers and so slowly, very, very slowly we go down the stairs, through the Headmaster’s study and outside, around the back of the building stand huddled, to jimmy the door and get into the kitchen. We each make about a dozen slices of Wonder Bread cinnamon toast, this time with butter. This is expulsion land. Students who broke into the freezer downstairs for ice cream came very close to getting their fondest wish. Dear dad: carry, car, seller

Guard your language.

The toast remained our secret all of our senior year. We never took anything else and we never left a trace. But neither of us ever had any desire for an institutional side can of stewed tomatoes. In 15 minutes we were back upstairs

“Bill, you awake?”

“Mitch, you awake?”

“ I’m awake.”

“I’m awake,”

“You want to smoke?”

“Want a smoke?”

We sit on Mitch’s bed at his window, hands cupped over the cigarettes, waiting for June.

I pull up my window, just feet above Norm’s study, Mitch comes in and we sit crosslegged on my blue spread, taking turns blowing ‘nothing beats the taste of Kent smoke’ out my window. “Did you see Brocsche’s face when he caught Camplin and Wilson talking?” “Their ass is grass.” “He gets bright red and you think he’s going to explode.”

“Think we’ll beat Nichols?” “No.” “Think I’ll get into Kenyon?” “Sure, you passed all the math… You passed algebra and geometry.” I pretend you don’t need math to be a doctor. I pretend a lot these days. “What do you want to do?”

“We can always hope.”

“I dunno, get some sleep I guess.”

I can see a light in the master’s room at the other side of the building. It’s not midnight and the train whistle sounds from the north and quickly go south toward Pennsylvania. I always think about how free those trains are and how I am here, intermittently, inexplicably. Here.

Meet Jack ‘25 and Eliza ‘21

During Gow vacations, students generally catch up on their sleep, and enjoy friends and family. Some might visit their old schools to talk about Gow or return to their previous summer job to earn some cash, but most just take a welldeserved opportunity to relax and recharge. While many Govians were sleeping in, Jack Gazzard ’25 was working at a Bermuda grocery store to raise money for a special cause.

The South Wales Fire Company and Gow share a special relationship. When the fire siren sounds, faculty and staff who serve as volunteers can be seen sprinting down Emery Road to the fire hall. Along with these Jack attended The Gow School Summer Program for three summers volunteers, each year four students are chosen to and joined The Gow School as a sixth grader in 2018. Last summer, Jack serve as Junior Firefighters. Selected by the fire wanted to earn some extra money so got a summer job at a local grocery company, these students attend meetings and assist store. An Update from

The Gow Alumni Association

The Gow Alumni Association wants to offer more networking and engagement opportunities for alumni, parents and current students. There is nothing better than getting Govians together! An Alumni Association leadership team has been created and is meeting monthly by conference call. Comprised of alumni from different eras, they are working to create a more robust alumni program with several key focus areas.

KEY INITIATIVES:

Expanding regional alumni networking opportunities • Coordinate local events for alumni, current and past parents and families who might be interested in Gow. • Provide internship opportunities and networking with current students. • Coordinate a local event for new students and their families before school starts so they get to know each other. Promoting alumni giving to Gow’s Annual Fund • Encourage class agents to contact classmates to encourage them to give. • Promote competition between classes to raise the percentage of giving. Networking with current students • Coordinate Career Days on campus. • Alumni attending sporting events with recent students (for example, the Buffalo Bills/Ravens game with a student tailgate beforehand). • Alumni campus visits to talk about college and career. Engaging young alumni • Plan local events just for young alumni (sporting events, networking opportunities). • Let us know what you’d like to do! Promoting the Dan Kelley Scholarship Fund This unique fund provides scholarships for the children of Gow alumni to attend Gow’s academic year or summer programs. We want to raise an additional $40,000 for this fund.
