A View from the Top Dear Friends, Completing my tenth year at Gow has given me an opportunity to reflect and look forward. This has been an era of progress on the campus: the introduction (and graduation!) of young women; significant growth of hands-on learning opportunities like robotics and digital technology; expansion of the day school program; the construction of several new buildings which have changed the face of our campus and improved the student and faculty experience; and an enhanced profile of our school and its good work around the world. However, our most important work remains student centered – excellent teachers, outstanding instruction, and students excelling beyond their own selfBjorn Thorsson ‘14, Headmaster expectations. We remain focused on college preparation and building skills for a colorful M. Bradley Rogers, Jr., and Peter Obletz ‘14 and successful life. It is with thanks to the generosity of many alumni, parents, friends, and Gow trustees that the school thrives. We have no debt and pride ourselves in carefully managing our finances. This edition of Gow Life highlights the names of those donors who, through their generous gifts of time and money, have made a difference. On behalf of everyone at Gow, I thank you. As you can see on the next page, we are focused on fundraising for a new dormitory on campus. This building, which will be located next to Warner House, will house 28 students and three faculty families in two larger residences and an apartment. We have nearly completed the fundraising for this new $3.5 million building and hope that you will join us by making a gift to help us reach our fundraising target. This edition of Gow Life also begins to tell the story of an interfaith chapel that will someday be present on our campus. The construction of this building was a long-time wish of Emeritus Headmaster David Gow, and his children are carrying forth to make their father’s vision a reality. This effort, spearheaded by son Philip Gow, has led to the creation of architectural drawings and the beginning of fundraising for the costs of construction and an endowment to support the building. To learn more about this contemplative space and our vision for it, please see page 31 of this magazine. Social media is playing an ever greater role in promoting Gow and helping to connect alumni, parents and friends to the school. Program and Campus Changes
Successful organizations pay close attention to their day-to-day operations while delivering the best possible services to execute their mission. Organizations that remain strong over time, keep their eye on the ball. They also practice responsible fiduciary management. Organizations such as schools, hospitals, museums, and universities put people first and at the same time plan for the future. While Gow teachers and leaders put most of our energy into academic programming, we are also making presentations at national conferences, contributing to the research in the field of dyslexia education, and we are also planning for our school’s future.
Science Building To Admissions - 2001
In the past ten years, we have been setting goals and achieving them. We have been implementing projects ranging from technology, student engineering, an all-school writing curriculum, and a foreign language to name a few. Our planning process is simple – we develop strong ideas that will help our students achieve success in college and life. We read the literature, visit other schools, and we dream big. Once we have an idea, we construct typically a 24-to-36 month plan to trial and deliver our new idea. We hire the right experts and we budget accordingly to support a new program. Therefore, we are always planning and we are always looking at ways to enhance our journey to being the very best school we can be. We bundled our strategic plan into three phases. This ten-year journey is now coming to the final objectives of phase three. We have begun thinking about our next set of programs and the future long range plan. Polishing the diamond of Gow has been no easy task. However, we have remained true to our core mission, and I am proud to tell you that Gow’s distinct culture of success is all about the students and faculty/ staff.

My Life As A Silicon Valley Dyslexic
By Andy Sims ‘91 that Farnham was the most haunted town in Europe. Little did I know at that moment, but the only specter revealed that week was my fear of being outed as dyslexic.
My career in Silicon Valley started with the advent of digital advertising in the mid-90s. In those early days, the internet challenged every aspect of advertising and rewarded radical new approaches. I rose quickly to leadership roles in top ad agencies by staking my career on challenging norms and thinking differently. Then, as so often happens, success rewarded me with even bigger opportunities. In 2008, I was recruited by eBay to build an advertising business for Skype. I jumped at the chance and began building Skype’s global advertising business. The leadership team at Skype was first rate, from amazing engineers and Ivy League MBAs to vertical specialists like me. As we prepared for sale, it was decided that my peers and I would attend an intensive management training program to sharpen our skills. Everyone was excited, but I had a sinking feeling that I’d be found out as a dyslexic. After all, this was a team of heavy hitters and I had never even correctly spelled the words accretive or acquisition on the first try. The management training workshop was to be held at an English estate called Farnham Castle. Upon arriving at the castle, the cab driver bragged

As the week progressed, we each were asked to honestly discuss how our past experiences informed our personal leadership styles – for better and worse. For me, honesty meant I had to speak about how dyslexia shaped me as a leader. As I spoke, I acknowledged the difficulties of my learning differences and how hiding them was consuming far too much unproductive energy. I also shared how learning to cope with dyslexia had taught me how to find alternate strategies and new approaches to problems that others often found intractable. I ended by promising to become a leader that used all available resources, including my dyslexia, to drive more growth and satisfaction in my part of the business. I fully expected some of my MBAtouting colleagues to be polite, but ultimately betray their opinion that I was now officially an intellectual lightweight. Instead, many of these well-credentialed people complimented me on having a noticeable gift for “orthogonal thinking” and strategic insight. I heard dyslexia referred to as a gift many times that day and several participants even cited Cisco CEO John Chambers as a mega-successful Silicon Valley dyslexic. A year later, Skype was acquired by Microsoft for $8.5 billion. Each of us had made our contribution, and as is custom in Silicon Valley, we parted ways to pursue our next Silicon Valley adventure. Today, I don’t lead with being a Silicon Valley dyslexic, but I don’t avoid it

either. Recently, one of my new coworkers accused me of having privileged information about an acquisition we were researching. She was insistent that “someone” was keeping her out of the loop. I asked her to be specific about this top secret information. After she told me, I reminded her that this information was in an email that was also addressed to her. I laughed and told her that I’m dyslexic and therefore read my email more slowly than most people. I explained that the trade off is that I can’t scan my emails quickly, but I retain more information. This seemed to appease her and then she joked that my source must have given me this cover story for when I finally got “busted.” I’m very proud to be a Gow alumnus. Thank you for giving me the tools to finally use my learning differences as the gift they really are.

Before joining Lithium, Andy was the Global Director of Advertising for Skype where he created Skype’s first advertising offering. He launched Skype’s ad offering in sixteen countries, worked directly with key investors and managed teams in Palo Alto, New York, London and Singapore. Prior to Skype, Andy served as Senior Vice President of Digital for ZenithOptimedia and ran digital for Ad Week’s “Independent Agency of The Decade” Butler, Shine & Stern Advertising. Andy is a 1991 graduate of The Gow School and graduate of Elon University and lives in San Francisco, California.

Written by Rick Ohler His initial interview with Norm Howard sparked a relationship that benefitted both Jon and eventually, the school. Jon is hardly unique in saying that he was anxious about coming to South Wales to attend a boarding school. He was a “hick from the Midwest,” and he recalls school founder Peter Gow showing him basic table manners. “I didn’t even know how to hold a fork and knife.” Jon and Barbara Holt at their Cape Cod home
For Jon Holt, graduate of the Class of 1958, enrolling at Gow was merely the first chapter in a lifetime of involvement with the school. In the nearly 60 years since he arrived in South Wales as a 14-year-old for his initial interview with assistant headmaster Norm Howard, Jon has done it all for Gow. He has been a student and talented athlete, a faculty member and coach (and half of the beloved dorm parent team at Templeton House with his wife, Barbara), a trustee, a member of The Gow School Wall of Fame, a founder of the Gow Alumni Association, and a winner of the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Speaking for both himself and Barbara in a recent phone call from their home on Cape Cod, he said, “It seems like a lot of our life has been tied to The Gow School. For me it's where everything began.” Like so many Gow alumni, Jon Holt’s beginnings at Gow came about because he was having a miserable time at school in his early teens, flunking nearly everything and reading at about a third grade level as a freshman. As fate would have it, his ninth grade Latin teacher in his small Illinois high school sensed that Jon had more ability than his performance indicated. The teacher had heard of headmaster Peter Gow, and suggested that Jon and his parents visit South Wales so he could be tested.

He had an epiphany, however, early in his first year. “There were only two of us in my Reconstructive Language class,” he said. “And one day I had done a thorough job on my homework and the other fellow had not. For the first time in my life, I was the best at something. I had finally experienced a measure of academic success. It was a turning point for me. RL was a big help, but I learned that the big secret was to work hard, and then work harder. Over time, Norm Howard came to discover that I was a pretty intelligent fellow. I figured that if I was smart enough for Norm Howard, I was good enough for the world, and whatever judgments had been made of me earlier no longer mattered. I realized, as well, that I was intensely competitive, and that I liked to win. I wanted to be just like Norm Howard,” he said. His success at Gow earned Jon an acceptance to St. Lawrence University, an extraordinary achievement. After two years, he transferred to Fordham University in New York City where he received his B.A. in history. Luckily, he didn’t stop there, going on to Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, where he earned his Master’s in history and met the lovely Irish lass Barbara, who would become his wife.

After a stint in the U.S. Army, Jon accepted Norm Howard’s invitation to become the first alumnus to return to Gow as a member of the faculty. In the fall of 1967, he and Barbara were installed in the apartment in Templeton Dormitory, Jon’s former digs as a student. The Holts quickly became fixtures on campus, ever more so as their three children arrived in rapid succession. Their lives centered around boarding school life—three meals a day at the dining hall for masters, students and families; diapered youngsters either enlivening Templeton or running around campus; Barbara as a surrogate mother to young men separated from their moms; Jon as a teacher and coach but also as a sympathetic ally since he had experienced only ten years before what these boys were going through. The Holts prided themselves in providing Templeton residents, young students so far away from their homes, a sense of family. It was a more Spartan existence back then, recalled Jon, when there weren’t any frills—no gym, no bus trips to the mall, no cable TV, or ski trips to Holiday Valley. Faculty members were granted half a day off a week and every second Saturday afternoon and evening free. The big outing for students (and teacher/ chaperones) was a Saturday night trip to the big city of East Aurora where coatedand-tied Govians went to the Aurora Theatre and Mileham’s Pharmacy, often suffering the taunts of the locals. Despite the lifestyle, Jon embraced the experience for his five years at Gow. He taught both history and algebra, becoming in his words a “good but not great” teacher. He revived the lacrosse program and coached one of Gow’s most memorable sports teams ever, the 1969 undefeated soccer team with several stars, including current trustee

Ultimately, the cramped quarters in Templeton, with no prospect of better housing and the paltry pay, caused the Holts to move on to public school teaching and finally into a successful day care business in Cincinnati. In time, his facilities provided quality day care for three hundred youngsters. Jon and Barbara kept in touch with the school and Jon joined the Gow School Board of Trustees in 1994, rising eventually to vice chair. He championed the cause of bringing teachers’ salaries and benefits into line with other private schools and helped start the Norm and Vesta Howard Scholarship Fund after Norm’s death. Jon founded the Gow Alumni Association, allowing former schoolmates to reconnect and raising money for the school in the meantime. In 1996, the school honored Holt’s service by naming him a Distinguished Alumnus; ten years later he went up on the Gow School Athletic Wall of Fame for his play as a member of the baseball and soccer teams and for his soccer team coaching from 1967-72. Of Gow today, Holt says, “It’s wonderful, it’s palatial compared to my day. There was a certain wisdom to the Spartan approach of the old days, but times have changed. I give David Gow credit for starting to make Gow a modern school, and, as one of those increasingly rare birds who has known all six headmasters, I’ve watched as each successive leader has put his stamp on the school and brought it into the 21st century. I think it’s great the way [sixth

and current headmaster] Brad Rogers works so well with the school population and the public as well. Gow is on the map in a way it never was before.” Headmaster Rogers returned the compliment by calling Holt, “a true, lifelong Govian who continues to honor and value the education he received, and who passed those values on to his students and athletes. He stressed teamwork and sportsmanship on the field of play and in all facets of life.” If there is one primary lesson Jon learned at Gow, it is Norm Howard’s recipe for happiness. “All happiness,” he remembered his former mentor and colleague saying, “is reflected. To help people, to see their success and fulfillment reflected in your work, is to know happiness.”

Roger Adams ‘71
If you had told Roger Adams a decade ago that he would one day be on the Gow School Board of Trustees, bringing boundless energy to his old school, he would have bet against you and been confident that he’d win. After all, when Roger left Gow after his junior year in 1970 to return to Catholic school and a promising athletic career in Ontario, he thought he had seen the last of South Wales. From 1970 to 2006, he resisted any attempts to bring him back into the fold. Then Barbara Holt, Roger’s former dorm mother and wife of faculty member Jon Holt (himself an alumnus, Class of ’58), got an idea to hold a reunion of the undefeated 1969 Gow soccer team—the most storied team in Gow history—of which Roger was the star, Jon Holt was the coach and Barbara was the team’s No. 1 fan. Since the school had no contact information for her former Templeton House charge, she did some Internet research and called every Roger Adams she could find a phone number for in Ontario, leaving messages in hopes she would stumble upon the right guy. A few dozen calls into her quest, she hit pay dirt. “When I heard Barbara’s Irish lilt on my answering machine,” said Roger, “my resolve disintegrated, and I knew I was going back to Gow. She
and Jon were such positive influences on my life during my school years that she was probably the only person who could get me to go back.” Roger made his way to South Wales from his home in Southern Ontario for the grand reunion, and he has never left. He now sits on the Board of Trustees, is helping with efforts to build the new dorm and lends his enthusiasm to all things Gow. “He was a star as an athlete forty-some years ago, one of the most prolific athletes we’ve had,” says headmaster Brad Rogers. “Now he’s a star again as a tireless advocate for us.” Adams’ early days had followed a familiar pattern. He came to the school as an eighth grader from Welland, Ontario in 1967. He had failed seventh grade, and more academic disappointment seemed inevitable. As is so often the case with young men who find their way to Gow, Roger’s parents knew someone who had heard of this place south of Buffalo called The Gow School. A visit to South Wales and an interview with Norm Howard ensued, and Roger became a new addition to the student body for the 1966-67 school year. Home to Roger Adams became Templeton House where the Holts and their growing family presided. It’s not that Roger found no success at Gow; he will be the first to admit that Reconstructive Language with master Tom Moore turned him around academically. But his athletic opportunities were limited at Gow by the unusual academic calendar and the difficulty in providing a schedule
that made use of Roger’s considerable talents. At the end of eleventh grade, with his reading ability much improved, he had burned out on the strictures the school placed upon him, declaring at one point that he’d had, “too much Gow.” He crossed the Peace Bridge into Canada and didn’t look back. Roger helped his old high school, Notre Dame, win the basketball championship his senior year, graduated, and went on to the University of Windsor (Ontario) where he drew the attention of pro football scouts. He was the last man cut from both the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the Canadian Football League. Guessing that it was time “to get a real job,” he went to work for Canadian Tire and later became owner of Hanley Shoe Shoppe of Ancaster, Ontario, married and had a family. The Gow School became a distant memory. Then came the call from Barbara Holt. Roger gets a little emotional describing his homecoming for the soccer team reunion. It remains an acknowledgement of the life-changing education he received here, one that has enabled him to become successful in business and life. To see him on campus these days—forty years older but still carrying himself like a championship athlete—is to see a man engaged in the mission of the school and enthusiastic about his role in its continued position as a leading educational institution for dyslexic young men and women.

With Thanks to The Tower Foundation, Gow School Teachers College a Success! More than 120 teachers and parents from as far away as Ecuador and California participated in the first-ever Gow Teachers College. Funded by a generous grant from The Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Foundation which allowed participants to attend at no cost, this two week summer session focused on technology, math, writing, and Reconstructive Language (RL), the social and emotional needs of learning disabled students, and how to choose the right college for LD learners. Classes were taught by Gow faculty members and several invited guest speakers. We wish to again thank The Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Foundation for enabling Gow faculty to share their expertise with others.

GOW’S ANNUAL REPORT OF DONORS SENIOR CLASS GIFT ENDOWED FUNDS For several years, graduating seniors and their families have been invited to donate to a Senior Gift. Initially, the class gifts supported items for the school: computers, chairs for the Senior Circle, gardens and more. It was then determined that it would be more meaningful to create endowed funds that would exist in perpetuity so classmates and their families could add to their class gift over time. As these funds are endowments, the school will spend only a small amount of the earnings for current needs including scholarship, buildings, maintenance, and special projects. To encourage the Senior Gift program, the Gow trustees match the funds raised by each class with unrestricted funds already in Gow’s endowment, thus doubling the size of each donation to the senior class gift. Members of the senior classes and their families have been very generous and coupled with investment gains, the fund totals are quite significant. It is our hope that members of the classes and their families will continue to add to their Class Fund in the future through annual giving or by designating this fund in their estate plans. CREATING A NAMED FUND AT GOW - Why and how Establishing an endowed Named Fund will create a legacy, while also helping to insure the financial future of The Gow School. A Named Fund is a special way to honor or recognize your family or someone special who has had an impact on your life. The fund must reach a minimum value of $25,000 over five years, and can be added to at any time. Named Funds can be designated for any purpose including scholarship, a department or interest - there are Named Funds which benefit the Reconstructive Language program, athletics and even a garden fund. If you create an unrestricted fund, Gow will use the funds where most needed. Many donors make arrangements to add to their Named Funds as part of their estate. DON LUSARDI RECEIVES LOWELL LUNDELL AWARD FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE Don Lusardi has shared his love of literature with Gow students for more than a decade, and retired in May. As English Department Chairman Jay Wright said when he presented Don with the coveted Lundell award, “Don is learned, wise, compassionate, dedicated and funny. He has blessed us with his brilliant education, experience and knowledge of his subject. His understanding of literature and writing is second to none. However, it is his collegiality and humor that have most blessed the English Department. He has always been ready to instantly collaborate, but more importantly he has always been ready to offer an ironic, satiric, curmudgeonly comment to keep us happily focused on our tasks.” A graduate of Brown University with a Masters in English from Duke University and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Wesleyan University, Don taught at the Blair Academy before joining Gow in 2000. He and his wife, Jeanne, have two children, Thomas and Catherine. The Lusardis have purchased a new home in Ithaca, New York.

Bill Hoke '58 enjoyed an epic cinnamon roll in Mollie's Cafe in Snowville, Utah while on a recent road trip from his home near Seattle. And, yep, he ate the whole thing. "Made three breakfasts," he reported.
Jim Cronk ’66 is retired as the Planning Director for the city of Flagstaff, Arizona. His wife, Sally is a retired special education teacher. They are living in Sedona and learning to enjoy a quieter schedule. Jim still plays a little soccer and runs. They have a son and daughter who also live in Arizona. Jim says “Hi to all and I’d like to hear from other oldies out there!”
Peter Knudsen ’59 and Robert Ittmann ’71 had lunch together in Palm Beach, Florida. Peter recently rejoined Gow’s Board of Trustees and spends the winters in Palm Beach and summers in Harbor Springs, Michigan.
David Nesbitt ’66 writes that “55 years ago, I spent a year in Gow. I would have stayed for the senior year had I really understood my mind, but personal perspective is lost to those introverting, so I finished high school in public surroundings. Gow was my best educational period. My focus was there, when in class and study hall, and was reflected in my senior year.”

Fred Bernard ’60 and Jim Harper ’76 met at a Gow dinner in Denver a year ago. Fred is in residential real estate sales and last fall, Jim called Fred for help in finding a new house. Shortly thereafter, Jim bought a new home in Greenwood Village, a wonderful suburb south of Denver. As Fred says, “Networking pays dividends!” Creighton Murch ’63 and Bob Vail ’68 met for lunch in Cleveland. Creighton and his wife, Janice have three children and live in Cleveland Heights. Bob and his wife, Lynn live in Moreland Heights, Ohio. Both Creighton and Bob serve on the Gow Board of Trustees.

Jim Nowak ‘67 has been married for 42 years and has four children and nine grandchildren. Jim is semi-retired but still working in the flooring business. He is President of the Central Cape Kiwanis, and has loved being the public address announcer for the Cape Cod Baseball League for 30 years. It’s the nations #1 college summer wood bat league.

Robert Ittmann ’71 and his wife, Lola live in Gulf Stream, Florida and Baltimore, Maryland. He recently became a Gow Trustee. (See photo with Peter Knudsen ’69) Dave Yates ’71 was named “One of the Most Influential People in the Plumbing and Hydronics Industry” by Contractor Magazine. Dave writes articles for industry magazines, speaks at events, has served as an adjunct professor, is teaching an online radiant design course and writes a monthly column for Contractor Magazine. Bruce Byers ’72 lives in New York City and is a professional photographer. His passion is documenting those working with children in need of medical care. He is going to El Salvador in October with www.chimecares.org. He says he is always flying somewhere in the world to photograph. He also has his real estate license in New York City. Rick Thompson ’72 recently finished his 38th year of teaching middle school science at the McDonogh School in Maryland where he also coaches the women's varsity golf team. He and his wife of 35 years, Ellee recently celebrated their 60th birthdays. Last year, Ellee retired from a 37-year career as a teacher. Their son Cam, his wife

Steve Paisley ’78 has been working in the film and television industry since 1992. He has been the Onset Painter for shows including Suits, Covert Affairs, King, Copper, The Mortal Instruments, King and Maxwell, The Strain, and Pixels. He also worked as a Scenic Painter on Beauty and the Beast, Reign, Lucky 7 and Hemlock Grove. Most recently, he finished working as the Onset Painter for the FX Network science fiction series The Strain. Steve and his wife, Hiroko live in North York, Ontario. Peter Hawkins ‘79 and his wife, Debbie have relocated to Tucson, Arizona to be close to their daughter’s family. Their new home adjoins the Tucson Mountain Park where there is a variety of wildlife in their backyard – even more than when they lived in northern Minnesota. Peter is still quite involved in nature photography and is currently in the planning stages of a photographic adventure that has been on the bucket list for almost 30 years. including the poster pictured with Jay in front. Jay had an opportunity to talk with Cruise and gave him an autographed copy of his joke book which contains a joke told by a mutual friend. Jay and Cruise both have dyslexia and served on a radio panel years ago.

Jonathan Siegel ’79 writes that his daughter Carly had her Bat Mitzvah on May 3. To celebrate, he is taking his family and three of his daughter’s friends to Las Vegas this summer. Ian Harris ’81 writes that “Gow has given me some of the best memories I have.” In 1995, he was working at a resort in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and wanted to understand Spanish. He remembered RL Class and the technique of learning two vocabulary words a day. Every day, he asked how to say two words in Spanish, wrote them down and would try and remember them. He did this for years, and today is able to communicate with the wonderful people of Mexico. Thank you RL Class, thank you to Gow and to the teachers who changed my life.”

Graeme Hepburn ’84 has become a partner in a craft brewing company called Side Launch Brewing Company in Collingwood Ontario. He writes that “After years of emptying kegs and cans, I thought I would try filling them up. Beer is sold in over 100 LCBO stores in Ontario and lots of restaurants. Gregory Hirsch ’85 and Larry Acheson ’83 met in Florida. Gregory lives in Hollywood, Florida with his wife, Laura and two sons. He is in the remodeling business and climbed Mount Rainier this spring. Christopher Perry ‘87 moved to Indianapolis and is working for Main Gate as a Traveling Event Logistics Coordinator for the NHRA Mello Yellow Drag Racing Series. Main Gate handles merchandise for events including NFL teams, Formula One Racing, the Superbowl, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, PGA Golf, US Bowling, and the Kentucky Derby. Chris travels 35 weeks a year to the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) seriesand also drives the John Force Team merchandise trailer. He writes, “I can’t believe my job is doing what I love most, seeing the US and meeting great people.” Blair Smith ’88 attended the Art Institute of Philadelphia where he was valedictorian and received an Associate’s Degree in Illustration. His illustrations have appeared in Image Comics, Zenascope Comics and Dynamite Entertainment, and many more. Pete Ketchum ‘88 spent the summer visiting National Parks and volunteered for a month at Dixie National Forest in Utah, clearing and improving a trail.

Brian Giradot ‘90 moved to Sacramento, California in March. He is the head coach for the football and girls basketball teams at the St. Charles Borromeo School. He and his wife are expecting their third child.

Scott Holm ’90 writes that “Everyone needs his own business jet. Look me up in Los Angeles and I will take you for a spin in one of my newly overhauled jets. Things are plane crazy in LA.” Scott refurbished and sold the jet pictured.
Kenna Tierney ’90 is working as a traveling chef on the INDYCAR Circuit and as an Event Chef at Catering By Design in Denver, Colorado. Breck Davis ’91 is working as an intervention specialist for students with reading difficulties in the Perrysburg, Ohio schools. Andy Sims '91 writes that after creating eBay-owned Skype's global advertising business in 2009 and contributing to Skype's sale to Microsoft for $8.5 billion in 2011, he joined Lithium Technologies as a director of business development. Last month he participated in his firm's acquisition of social media platform Klout and is helping prepare Lithium for its next move. He lives in San Francisco and jokes that the HBO series Silicon Valley is a “scarily realistic depiction” of his industry.
Brian DeNutte ’95 is currently stationed in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He has spent the last 17 years on active duty with the Marines and has completed deployments in the Philippines and Australia, two in Iraq, seven in Japan, has spent three years in California, five in Virginia, and two in North Carolina. He graduated from boot camp in Parris Island, South Carolina in 1997. Brian is married with three children and a cat. He graduated from Maryland University in 2012 while stationed in Japan.

He was selected as a Connect Champion for the summer 2014, and two years in a row for his work as a Data Defender and User Group Leader. He will be giving a Keynote speech in Las Vegas in September about the importance of having a good social media strategy. Grayson Chalmers ‘00 married Isabelle Richer who he met while working in Montreal. They live in San Clemente, California where Grayson works for a game studio, Blizzard Entertainment as an Art Outsource Manager on a secret project. This studio made World of Warcraft, Diablo III, Starcraft, and the new digital card game Hearthstone. Dan Mehta ’03 is working for Boy Scouts of America and lives in Chicago. This summer, he worked at the Ravinia Festival for the 16th year. Gordon Naumberg ‘03 graduated in March with a Masters of Arts in American Fine and Decorative Art. His thesis explored how itinerant American painters captured the novel landscapes of Central and South America through their southern journeys.

Chris Eakin ‘07 is a buyer for a steel compnay and is ejoying his job. Paul Kohan ’07 graduated with a law degree from the Vermont Law School in May and sat for the Uniform Bar Exam this summer. He returned to Gow this past winter to talk to students. Dan Lieberman ’07 – His mom writes that “Gow and all the wonderful people are always in my thoughts. We are thrilled with the progress Dan has made, starting with the foundation of Gow. He has just finished his first year of college and is on a mission to complete his Bachelors and is even talking about going on after that!! I think five years in the Navy were fantastic for him.” Wayne Stubbs ‘07 is an NCAA Lacrosse Coach at Daniel Webster College. Hunter Tyrrell ’07 is a captain for a 75foot motor yacht, the La Nona, based in Miami, Florida.

Alumni News Kent Vaughn ‘07 has joined the Peace Corps and is going to Zambia for two years. Brenden DeLuke ’08 is an intern for U.S. Congressman Steve Scalise (Republican for the State of Lousiniana) in the U.S. House of Representatives. Gabe House ’08 came to campus to speak with students last spring. He worked at the Gow Summer Program this summer and got married in August in Nova Scotia. Jordan Walker ’08 works for TowBoat US in Ft. Lauderdale. Jordan was the captain of the boat that recently participated in the attempted retrieval of the SpaceX launch in the Atlantic Ocean off North Carolina. Trevor Devine ‘09 received a 3.6 GPA this semester at Trocaire College School of Hospitality Management. Henry Minis ‘09 graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a BFA in graphic design. He has been working as a graphic designer

and illustrator for a Savannah based print shop called STEAM. He is now a creative intern at FCB Global in Chicago, an advertising agency in the Hancock building, a famous Chicago landmark. Joey Pease ’09 returned to Gow for a visit. He recently completed four years in the Marine Corps where he served two tours in Afghanistan. Rory Castrogiovanni ‘10 just graduated from Bethany College and is working for AmeriCorps as a Habitat for Humanity construction crew leader in Pittsburgh.

William Lashbrook ‘10 is living in St. Simons Island, Georgia and works at Peachmac, a certified apple retailer. Will is working toward a business degree. Cole Perry ’10 graduated from Linfield College June 1 with a degree in history. Jimmy Ayers ’11 and Hilarie Clark (Gow Summer School staff) were married June 14 in Sewickley, Pennsylvania. 2011 classmates attending included Will Checkeris, and Joe Shattuck and John Kearns who were in the wedding. Ben Ward ‘09 is working as an administrator at Boston University. He is working on Federal and State grants for a small online school, CADER (Center for Aging and Disability Education and Research). He is also doing tech and sales support and procurement operations. If any alumni are social workers, nursing home employees or California nurses who need continuing education credits for their license, he can give them a great discount.

John Kearns ‘11 is thriving at Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. His dad writes that he maintains a 3.5 GPA in engineering, recently won the Novotny Award, and will be co-captain of the men’s crew team next year. Grant Furton ’12 gave Shelby Balcom ’15 a tour of Savannah College of Art and Design (Pictured). Grant is really enjoying his SCAD experience and is starting his junior year.

Ian Hynes ‘12 is a sophomore at SUNY Purchase with a 3.5 average in Political Science/International Relations. He has been accepted to study in Darmasala, India with the Buddhist monks. Owen Peet ‘12 is finishing his second year of college and is majoring in Sustainability. His mom writes that his last semester GPA was a 3.4 and that he wouldn't be where he is today without the help of Gow He worked in the Gow Summer Program. Izer Martinez ’13 finished his first year at the University of Pennsylvania. He recently pledged a fraternity and plans to live in the house next fall. He returned to Gow for Commencement.

Roddy O’Conner ’13 enjoyed his first year at Savannah College of Art and Design. His mom said he is doing well. Eddie Purtell ’13 finished his first year at the University of Denver with a 3.2 GPA. He recently joined the business fraternity and this summer will be working at Florsheim Shoes in Inventory Control in Milwaukee.

OBITUARIES
John Broadwater ‘67 passed away in January 2011 in Hagerstown, Maryland. Jan Howell died June 7, 2014. Jan and her husband, Dick married in 1959 and taught at Gow before joining Dick’s father’s trade show business, Hale Northeastern in 1972. Jan is survived by a son, Andy in Austin, Texas, and husband, Dick in Elma, New York. Russell A. Putney ‘43 died January 25 at the age of 86 in Lakewood, New York.
Porter Follett ‘13 enjoyed his first year at Colorado University in Boulder. Thomas Gruber ‘13 completed his first year at Davis and Elkins with a 3.1 GPA. He is working at Winward Sailing this summer and lives in Amelia Island, Florida. Alex Laethem ‘13 enjoyed his freshman year at Michigan State University.

Owen Shaffer of Highland Park, Minnesota died January 19. Survived by his wife, Veronica, and a son, Matthew ’86 (Kim), Owen served on the Gow Board of Trustees from 2002 to 2004. Joseph M. Ulrich III ’67 of Akron, Ohio passed away September 2, 2013.

David Gow Sr. Memorial Interfaith Chapel

Spiritual life is the bouquet, the perfume, the flowering and fulfillment of human life, not a supernatural virtue imposed upon it. ~ Joseph Campbell “The Power of Myth”, page 197 Since its inception more than ninety years ago, The Gow School has viewed the development of its students’ spiritual awareness as an essential part of their preparation for life as a college student and adult. More than half a century ago, space in the second story of the former art building, served as a chapel for the school. But as the school grew and other needs and priorities took over, the students’ spiritual development moved to local churches, synagogues and services conducted in some of the school’s common spaces. David Gow Sr. was committed to having a chapel on campus where students could reflect and collect themselves spiritually. He saw this as an essential element in a Govian’s experience. In the early 1980s, David and his sister, Barbara Gow Deemer, established a fund to realize a chapel on campus. That fund now has grown to about $250,000. After David Gow’s last graduation ceremony as Headmaster in 1990, one of the graduating seniors
Gow School Headmasters M. Bradley Rogers, Jr. and asked him what he would like for Gow. “I would like to see a chapel on campus” he responded. David W. Gow in 2004 When that senior returned for his twentieth reunion in 2010,
he asked David Gow the same question and received the same response. This discussion became the catalyst for our current efforts. During the last two years of his life, David Gow initiated a fund-raising effort to make an on-campus chapel a reality. His vision for this chapel project was that its fund raising would be done outside the school’s normal development operations. The first $1 million raised would establish an endowment in tribute to Gow’s faculty, past and present. The next funds raised would cover the chapel’s construction costs and future maintenance, so as not to take money away from the other functions of the school. After David’s death in December of 2011, members of his family and a number of alumni who attended the school during David’s tenure as headmaster, joined to carry on and complete David’s dream. To that end, the Board has worked with members of the Gow family to develop the chapel design below. The interfaith chapel with 1600 square feet on its upper level, is designed to accommodate about thirty students. It will be in a prime location with large windows overlooking Cazenovia Creek and the woods beyond. The interior will be open so it may be adapted to varying seating configurations. It will not have an Internet connection. It will not be a place for cell phones and computers. The chapel is intended to be a quiet space where Gow students can retreat from the frenetic activity of every day life, contemplate some of life’s more fundamental questions and share spiritual time with similarly inclined fellow students. These plans will create a fully furnished Chapel that will cost $850,000. That, plus the $1 million endowment brings the total program cost to $1,850,000. The Chapel Fund has about $250,000, and members of the Gow family and engaged alumni hope to raise an additional $750,000 over the coming months. The plans are complete and a prime location has been selected. Fundraising by the Gow family and engaged alumni continues with the support of our School and Board to make David’s dream of a fully-endowed permanent interfaith chapel on the Gow campus a reality.
