HEADMASTER M. BRADLEY ROGERS, JR.

Dear Friends, As Gow begins its 92nd year, our school remains true to its mission of educating students who struggle with languagebased learning challenges. As our girls’ boarding program grows (we currently have 20 female boarding students), this provides the structured programming, exceptional academic support, and life-changing experiences to both boys and girls who need it most. For many years, the school has been preparing for coeducation. Some of our seasoned faculty members will say this important conversation has been going on for decades. Our 25 year history of running the coed Gow School Summer Program has helped us better understand the differences in the way boys and girls learn, but also to appreciate the clear advantages of learning together. Becoming coed is a team effort and I am thankful to our trustees, faculty and staff and most importantly, the students and families who have helped make this vision a reality. We still have work to do. As with everything in life, our school continues to evolve and change to best meet the needs of our students. In a rapidly changing work world, we believe that the right brain strengths of many of our students will help them to excel in emerging professions that may not yet exist. While language-based learning differences create challenges, our students also tend to think outside the box and to willingly overcome obstacles. Our most important work remains student centered – excellent teachers, outstanding instruction, and students excelling beyond their own self-expectations. We remain focused on college preparation and building skills for a colorful and successful life. Your support and belief in our school makes all this possible. Social media is playing an even greater role in promoting Gow and helping to connect alumni, parents and friends to the school. If you haven’t yet done so, please visit Gow’s website (gow.org) to see frequently updated photos in the Media Gallery, join us on Facebook (including Gow Connect for our alumni), and sign up to receive our Twitter feed. These are all easy ways to connect with the school and each other. It is thanks to the generosity of alumni, parents, friends, and trustees that Gow thrives. We have no debt and carefully managed finances. This edition of Gow Life highlights the names of those donors who, through their generous gifts of time and money, have made a difference. On behalf of everyone at Gow, I thank you for your belief in our school and its mission. If you can, please stop by for a tour and visit. There is no better way to experience Gow today than to visit with students and see them in action. With all best wishes,

Anne and Brad Rogers

Siblings and Legacies Abound at Gow We hope you enjoy reading about our current students and their Gow family connections. We have profiled two of our many families with two or more Gow graduates. Eric Halls ‘82 and his daughter Rosalie ‘16 are Gow’s first father daughter graduates, and Doug Cotter ‘87, P ‘19 and his family are an integral role at Gow. Doug was a history teacher and dorm master, and now serves as Director of Admissions. Doug’s brother, Kevin, graduated in 1985, and his son, Andrew, is a member of the class of 2019. 2

It’s a new year at Gow! Over the years, we have welcomed numerous legacy students. Whether they are related to fathers, grandfathers, brothers, cousins or even sisters who are graduates, that is a special bond with Gow. This year, we are welcoming a record number of legacy students which is testament to the life-changing impact of Gow’s programs. As we begin the new year with 142 students including 45 new students, eight are legacies. 3

Out of 45 new students: • Three have brothers currently attending Gow • Two have brothers who are Gow alumni (Brandon Brois ‘16 and Jose Cuesta ‘17) • One is the nephew of a Gow alumnus (Peter Moorhead ‘92); and • One is the son of an alumnus (Chris Chapman ‘91) Of Gow’s 142 total students: • Five have brothers or sisters who are Gow alumni (Heath Badders ‘05, Brandon Brois ‘16, Jose Cuesta ‘17, Kyle Suriner ‘15, Courtney Wilday ‘17) • Three brother and sister combinations attend • Three sets of brothers attend (including a set of twins) • Five are children of alumni (Tristan Carrier ‘90, Chris Chapman ‘91, Doug Cotter ‘87, Creighton Murch ‘63) • One is a nephew of an alum (Peter Moorhead ‘92) • One has a current brother attending, as well as a sister who graduated in 2017!

Like Father, Like Daughter—the Halls Make History at Their Alma Mater

by Rick Ohler

Eric Halls ‘82 and daughter Rosalie Halls ‘16, the first father/daughter graduates in the history of the school, can talk for hours about Gow and its positive impact on them. On a recent Saturday they drove from London, Ontario and shared many touching and hilarious stories about Eric’s five years and Rosalie’s single Gow year as a senior. I can sum up our conversation in these three words from Eric: “This place works.” He described a graph that headmasters Norm Howard and David Gow kept of his progress. He still has that graph that shows how he started at a very low reading level and progressed on a steady upward curve to a level he thought unattainable. All this from a youngster who failed second and seventh grades at a parochial school in London, and whose prospects were bleak in a school system that largely ignored learning differences. Luckily, his parents knew Steve Ibbotson’s family (class of 1980 and now a trustee), and they put him in touch with Gow. With the Gow education under his belt, he went to Western Ontario University and now runs a successful flooring business. Thirty-four years after Eric completed his graph, Rosalie added “Mrs. Rose, my Reconstructive Language teacher, made a graph for me, too. I started really low in reading and improved ten levels in one school year. I never thought that was possible. Neither did my mum, who’s a special education teacher.” With guidance from Mr. Brown and Mrs. Mirsky, Rosalie was accepted at Mt. Allison in New Brunswick where she earned a 4.0 her first semester and finished her freshman year on the Dean’s List. Rosalie’s path to Gow was unusual. “We were bringing a girl and her family to visit Gow from London,” she began. “I was familiar with the school since I had attended The Gow School Summer Program, and I’d come down often with my dad so knew the Kelleys and the Roses. Mr. Rogers and Mr. Cotter thought Dad and I might be helpful in showing the girl around. After we got here, Mr. Rogers asked if I had ever thought about coming to Gow.” Rosalie was completely taken by surprise. She had never even considered Gow. (Her dad swears he was not in on the surprise.) She lived in a bilingual home, so was capable in English but for eleven years, had attended a French Immersion School. Although she struggled in school, she was not in desperate straits. The headmaster and admissions director urged her to consider Gow as they thought she would be a great addition to the first group of girls to live on campus in a remodeled Cornwall Dormitory. After much trepidation (“I was sure I would fail,” said Rosalie), a list of pros and cons, consulting her family and special education teacher, she made the decision to attend and says “It was really hard at first. I wanted to come home for the first two months. It took a little while to get into it.” Imagine what she was up against: a new school for twelfth grade, first time boarding in a dormitory, living in a majority male setting, and being the first female Resident Assistant in the school’s history. She had a lot on her plate. Her senior year wasn’t easy. She worked so hard that several teachers cautioned her to study less. And while some of her schoolmates were helpful, she was the target of some resentment for upsetting the status quo of a senior class that had been together for many years. But she survived and then some. She embraced her leadership role and was accepted into college. Her grandparents remarked that she had gone off as a shy, timid kid and emerged as a forceful and upright young woman. Her dad added, “You needed Gow to grow as a person. Sometimes challenges make you grow.” Rosalie summed it up this way: “Gow really helped me gain selfconfidence. I did things that I never thought I could do. Gow helped me be who I am today.” And today, in addition to studying at Mt. Allison, she volunteers at an LD school, works at a summer camp, and helps teach an Arts Success class at Mt. Allison. Majoring in French and Spanish, she hopes to become a teacher. You couldn’t hope for two more enthusiastic Gow supporters than the Halls. “The school did well for me and for my daughter, so I try to give back.” You can often find Eric visiting Gow’s Development Office, making phone calls and connecting with fellow alumni. His only complaint is that more people don’t know about Gow. “We’ve got to get the word out, especially to those in Canada. This place works. Everybody should know about it.” Eric and Rosalie are certainly doing their part to get the message across.

The Cotter Family: Sibling and Legacy Traditions Continue

by Rick Ohler It’s hard to imagine Director of Admissions Doug Cotter ‘87, P ’19 working anywhere but Gow. Often on a plane bound for the far corners of the world, Doug shares the Gow story with concerned, frustrated, and hopefully, relieved parents and students who may finally sense that a successful educational experience exists just over the horizon in South Wales. When on campus, Doug is always nattily dressed, often bow-tied, and always the keeper of more information in his head than the biggest Rolodex imaginable. Mention the name of any student, past or present, and he’ll rattle off all the pertinent data— family, success at Gow, dormitory, athletics, previous schools, college, post Gow work experience and more. His knowledge of other schools—public, private, boarding, parochial, specialty and rivals is just as comprehensive. With all that information in his head and all the possibilities open to him, it’s difficult to think of a greater testimony to Gow than when he and his wife, Kelly, enrolled their son, Andrew in the school. In May of 2019, Andrew will become the first child of an alumnus and faculty/ staff

The Gow Life Magazine

member to graduate from Gow. And the younger Cotter, Edward, will appear on campus in the fall of 2019 as a ninth grader in the class of 2023. Doug Cotter’s path to Gow and beyond is like many—unique. A struggling student at Amherst (NY) High School, he came to Gow in ninth grade while his brother, Kevin, was a junior. “It’s not necessarily something I wanted to do; it was something I had to do. Along the lines of cough syrup,” said Cotter of Gow in a recent conversation. Rebelling at first, he tried to get expelled by breaking one of the automatic expulsion rules, but headmaster David Gow, in his wisdom, decreed that “the punishment should fit the criminal, not the crime,” and made him stay. Cotter eventually settled down, grasped the Reconstructive Language way of doing things and achieved some degree of remediation. Still, he left after his sophomore year, with no argument from his family who had four kids in college and two at Gow. He returned to Amherst High and soon fell back into his bad reading and learning habits. “I blew my opportunity to go to the college I had hoped for, and I had to settle for Erie

8

Community College (ECC).” At that point, he might have been finished with The Gow School forever, except for the intercession of Fate. Cotter, after cobbling together a college career that included ECC, Mercyhurst and UB, had taken a job bartending at the Shebeen, an Irish pub in downtown Buffalo frequented by then Gow English chair Mason Winfield. They got to talking one snowy night and before long Winfield had convinced him to come back to the one place that had really helped him to see if it was a fit. Twentyfive years later, it would be hard to think of The Gow School without Doug. Cotter moved into Ellis House and followed the progression at Gow from instructional assistant to teacher, to assistant in the Office of Admissions, and finally to director in 2013. He also brought with him the proud Cotter family tradition of rowing. The Raven crew team has been plying the waters of Black Rock Canal ever since. Says Doug of his career so far, “My rewards at Gow come in the relationships I’ve made, the incredible world travel, and the satisfaction of helping families with some daunting challenges”. Andrew Cotter reaps the benefits of having the way paved for him by his father and uncle. His parents, familiar with dyslexia, had him tested in elementary school when they discovered that possible learning challenges lay ahead. Andrew spent four summers at The Gow School Summer Program (GSSP) and entertained thoughts of going to Canisius or St. Joe’s for high school, even though he knew in his heart that Gow was the right place. “I had a friend with a learning profile similar to mine, he said, “who went to Canisius and had to bail out after two weeks.” It took Andrew about one marking period to fully buy into the system, and now he’s a fixture on Visit us at gow.org

campus: an Resident Assistant in Warner Dormitory, a member of the crew team, and a two-year member of the South Wales Fire Company. At the fire company, he and senior Phil Halet attend meetings, go to fire calls when they can, and even have a chance to suggest improvements. “We’re proposing to the fire company and Town of Wales that they invest in a heat monitoring drone that makes fighting some fires more efficient.” His experience has inspired Andrew to consider fire management, law enforcement, and computer science as possible fields of study next fall. The combination of a Gow education and Gow’s college counseling department will insure that Andrew finds a college that suits his needs and accommodates his learning style. Andrew likes having his father on campus -- “someone to talk to other than an advisor.” He says that he may get a break as a faculty brat, but knows it’s hard to get away with anything. “Really though,” he said, “most kids get settled in pretty quickly, even more quickly if they’ve had a summer or two at GSSP. And the upperclassmen are usually pretty helpful.” “So you don’t have any problem recommending Gow for young people with learning differences, even if they don’t have a parent on the staff?” I asked Andrew. “I can easily recommend Gow,” he said. Doug Cotter suggests that Gow is quickly becoming a legacy and sibling school as parents and graduates recognize the value of the Gow education. He won’t have any trouble selling that notion to potential Gow families, because the Cotters are living proof of the program’s success. About Author Rick Ohler: A lifelong East Aurora resident, Rick has been a friend of The Gow School for many years. A professional house painter by trade, his passion is creative writing. He writes a weekly column for the East Aurora Advertiser, teaches adult writing classes, and retired in May from teaching English 10 and 12, and journalism at The Gow School for the past 17 months.

Gow Faculty members Rick Ohler and Bill Parsons

Lifelong Friends, and Now a Gow Connection By Rick Ohler Bill Parsons and I have a lot in common. We grew up in the same town, went to the same college—Union College in Schenectady, NY, became roommates in our sophomore years, grew our hair really long as you can see in the photo from 1974. (I am pictured third from left and Bill is on the far right in photo below).

We had wonderful adventures in his 1961 Ford Falcon, came back to our hometown of East Aurora after graduating from college, got married and had children, and both have taught at The Gow School. We even sat in the same top row of the theatre during Assembly (seats six and seven). But one large difference separates us. Bill has the record for the longest tenured faculty member—45 years—and I have the record for the shortest tenure on the faculty—17 months. Still it was a privilege to serve on the faculty with Mr. Parsons, and I wish him many more years.

DEVELOPMENT OFFICE UPDATE GAYLE HUTTON, DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

Dear friends,

Since returning to Gow in December, I have visited with hundreds of alumni and parents around the country. What a pleasure to see friends from the past, and to meet our current Gow families and students. Thank you to those who have hosted events or helped to identify the perfect restaurant for us to meet. Total Money Raised 2017-18 by Fund Type Capital Projects 16%

Restricted Funds 37%

The Gow Fund 37%

Scholarship 7%

This is a dynamic time at Gow. Thanks to the generosity of alumni, parents and friends, Business Office diligence, and the Trustees Finance Committee oversight, Gow has a healthy endowment of over $20 million and raised the largest amount ever for our Gow Annual Fund (please see chart page 18). Counting all donations, we raised nearly $800,000 last fiscal year. (Please note graph at left for a summary). This doesn’t mean we can rest on our laurels, but rather that we must continue to raise money to guarantee a strong future. Securing more needbased financial aid, unrestricted Annual Fund dollars, and support for capital projects, are vital to the fiscal health of our school. This edition of Gow Life contains our Annual Giving Report which thanks those who made gifts between July 1, 2017-June 30, 2018 and has information about other ways you can give to Gow. Your gift of any size really does make a difference.

Gayle E. Hutton My fellow Govians, My name is Paul W. Kohan and I am honored to be the new Gow Alumni Association President. I am a special education attorney with the Cuddy Law Firm, the largest special education law firm in the country. I primarily practice law in New York City with a focus on low-income families. My road to becoming an attorney was a long and difficult one. To prepare for the New York State Bar Exam, I did 3,000 practice multiple choice questions when others did 1,000; I wrote 170 essays when others did 50. It was exhausting and daunting. However, the entire process made me realize how lucky I am to have gone to The Gow School. There have been times when I wanted to give up on my dreams. However, thanks to the lifelong friends I made at Gow who have been my staunchest supporters, I persisted. I am incredibly thankful for them. As a young professional, I now realize that the connection I have with The Gow Life Magazine

Gow alumni and students is unique. Like every graduate of the same school, we have stories about our favorite teachers. Has anyone ever seen Mr. Hazen without a beard? Does Mr. Brown have a photographic memory? Who goes to school on a Saturday?! Most importantly, we share something powerful and sincere. Every Govian has struggled with their learning disabilities, but knows that with the right support from teachers who care and the chance to build our confidence, we have talents to share with the world. This is possible because we were fortunate enough to discover Gow. Over the past year, I have connected with many Gow alumni. I have gone to the opening of a Gow alum’s new East Village restaurant, have vacationed with Gow alumni, and have been in the wedding party of my best Gow friend. Each experience with my fellow Gow alumni has reinforced the importance of Gow and the Alumni Association. We are in this together. 10

Planned Giving at Gow An estate plan will benefit you, Gow, and those you love!

What is a Planned Gift and Why Should We Make One?

Regardless of your life circumstances or estate size, your Planned Gift may be the most important document you create. A Planned Gift is a charitable instrument designed (preferably with professional advice) to optimize your financial, tax, and estate wishes. Planned Gifts help donors to maximize their charitable giving, minimize taxes, and can be altered at any time. You can stipulate this gift in your will as either a set amount or percentage of your estate (called a bequest), or make a gift of life insurance or retirement funds during your life. Estate planning offers tax benefits for you and your family, and ensures that your assets are distributed to the people and institutions that are most important to you. Your gift can be unrestricted (so that Gow can use it where needed most) or restricted to a program or area of interest such as scholarship or endowment. You may be able to request a naming opportunity such as a fund in your name or in honor or memory of a loved one in exchange for your commitment.

Why The Wolbach Planned Giving Society?

Honoring those donors who have included Gow in their estate plans Over the years, bequests of all sizes have played an important role in the growth and success of The Gow School. To honor one of our most loyal alumni and significant Planned Giving donors, Gow’s Wolbach Planned Giving Society is named in honor of John Wolbach ‘37. The Wolbach Planned Giving Society recognizes those alumni and friends who have either made a planned gift to the School, or who have included the School in their estate plans. John Wolbach ‘37 attended Gow for six years, graduated from Harvard and was an Astronomy Department faculty member for more than sixty years. During his life, he gave more than $1.5 million to Gow. Upon his death, he made a $2 million bequest which was at the time, Gow’s largest gift. His generosity helped to create the campus we know today. Because of John’s thoughtful estate planning and gifts made both during and after his life, his legacy continues to shape The Gow School of today.

Ways to Make a Planned Gift to Gow - and to make a difference! Designate a Gift to Gow in your Will

This is one of the easiest ways to make an estate gift. Simply ask your attorney to review the following wording and include it in your will: “I give and bequeath to The Gow School (Tax ID# 16-1034793), located in South Wales, New York, the sum of $______ OR ______% of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate.

Donate a policy that has been paid off or name Gow as your beneficiary. If you make the premium payments, they become deductions and the policy’s value is removed from your estate. You could also sell an unneeded insurance policy and donate the proceeds, earning an immediate tax-deduction.

Donate your IRA

If you are age 70½ and have to take a Required Minimum Distribution from your IRA distribution, you can donate that to Gow. This will reduce your adjusted gross income and tax burden.

Make Gow a Beneficiary of Your Retirement Plan

Leaving your retirement plan or IRA (or a portion of it) to Gow or naming Gow as the recipient of your retirement plan after your lifetime (or following the death of you and your spouse), avoids all estate and income taxes on the plan assets. If you name Gow as the beneficiary of the remainder of your retirement plan at your death, 100% goes to Gow. Please consult your professional advisor to determine which Planned Giving option would be most appropriate for you and your family. If you have included Gow in your Planned Gift or would like further information, please contact Gayle Hutton, Director of Development at 716.687.2074 or ghutton@gow.org. Thank you!

CREATING A NAMED ENDOWMENT FUND

IN THE WORDS OF OUR DONORS: Why we created The Dubin Gutkind Engineering Scholarship Fund Sondra and Michael Gutkind (parents of Jonathon ‘01, pictured at right) come from families who believed in philanthropy and making a difference. In Michael's words "Gow gave Jonathon the confidence, academic skills and sense of community that allowed him to succeed in college and beyond”. Jonathon is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in civil engineering. To recognize and encourage students who are interested in science and technology, the Gutkind’s created the Dubin Gutkind Engineering Scholarship Fund. This award is named in memory of both Sondra’s and Michael’s parents who were strong advocates for Jonathon’s education. The award will be given each year to an outstanding upper school student with an interest in engineering. Sondra says "We created this award to motivate and support students like Jonathon to further their technical education. This is our way of saying thank you for all Gow did for our family. We hope our gift will inspire other alumni and their families to make gifts which will help support Gow students to achieve their goals".

NAMED FUNDS AT GOW

CREATING A GOW NAMED FUND - Why and how Establishing an endowed Named Fund will create a legacy, while also helping to insure the financial future of Gow, A Named Fund is a special way to honor or recognize your family or someone special who has had an impact on your life. The fund must reach a minimum value of $25,000 over five years, and can be added to at any time. Named Funds can be designated for any purpose including scholarship, a department or interest - there are Named Funds which benefit the Reconstructive Language program, athletics and even a garden fund. If you create an unrestricted fund, Gow will use the funds where most needed. Many donors make arrangements to add to their Named Funds as part of their estate. This is an opportunity for families to add to a Named Fund in honor or memory of a loved one. An endowment creates a lasting legacy at The Gow School. Because only up to 5% of the investment and interest amount are spent annually, the fund will continue to grow in perpetuity. To find out more, please contact Gayle Hutton, Gow’s Director of Development at 716.687.2074 or ghutton@gow.org.

IN THE WORDS OF OUR DONORS: Why we created The Gow School Student Enrichment Fund In 1975, a young man happened to read an article about Gow while waiting to have his hair cut. As a dyslexic who had struggled in school, he was intrigued to learn about Gow’s well-rounded focus on academics, athletics and extra-curricular activities, all essentially tailored to students with dyslexia. Although he was then a senior in high school and therefore past the point at which he would have considered attending Gow, the article found its place within his memory.

Weston ‘42 Charitable Remainder Trust

Years later when he became a trustee of a foundation and was in the position to thoughtfully grant money to worthy organizations, he remembered Gow. He came to visit, spent two days observing classes and meeting students and faculty, and was so inspired that he created The Gow School Student Enrichment Fund. Suggested by Headmaster Brad Rogers, this fund assists students, based on financial need, in “getting the full benefit and value out of the Gow experience.” The Student Enrichment Fund is used to fund sports, activities, music lessons, travel experiences, and other Gow-related offerings, the costs of which are not included in regular tuition. The donor hopes that others might similarly be inspired to give to this fund so that it may grow and accommodate the needs of an even greater number of students and families as they seek to maximize the value of the many benefits associated with a Gow education. A NOTE FROM KATIE TIERNEY, GOW’S DIRECTOR OF BUSINESS OPERATIONS AND CFO Greetings from The Business Office! I think this is a good place to share our Financial Philosophy Statement, which was approved by the Finance Committee in 2017. The Gow School Financial Philosophy Statement: The Gow School is in the people business with a focus on educating students with dyslexia and similar language-based learning disabilities. We are strong today because we have paid close attention to our revenue stream and managed expenses. We pay closest attention to the academic program or student progress, and revenue and expenses are a close second. We are responsible with, and for, Other People's Money (OPM). We do not take risks with OPM. We strive to have all financial (and otherwise) decisions, large and small, support the mission of the school. We strive to practice ethical decision making with the school's finances. We rely on governance oversight and care with long-range planning. We make large scale decisions in team fashion when appropriate. We follow a model of continuous improvement. We examine past decisions, good and bad, to make more informed future decisions. We rely on our auditors to strengthen our operation. Annually we generate multiple budget scenarios based on enrollment forecasting. This allows us flexibility in the environment of uncertainty. The Gow School maintains a debt-free philosophy. Thanks to generous donors and responsible oversight Gow has long-term holdings valued over $20M. They are in place to support the physical plant, distribute need-based financial aid and secure the future viability of the school. A Message from John Bullock ‘80, Chair Greetings Gow Family, I wanted to say hello as the newly appointed board chair of The Gow School. The school year is off to a dynamic start, and I look forward to hearing inspiring Gow success stories when next on campus. I want to thank Graeme Hepburn ‘84, Gow’s recent board chair, for his leadership, dedication, and passion for the school. We are so fortunate to have dynamic leaders like Graeme to inspire those parents, friends, and alumni who serve on the Gow Board of Trustees. As the torch is passed to me, I think back to my time at Gow from 1977-80 and to the positive impact Gow has had on my life. With Mr. Gow leading the school, I was fortunate to learn from many great teachers and fellow students who helped me to graduate with the confidence and skills necessary to overcome the challenges that dyslexia presents every day. I trust Gow will have a similar impact on the students of today and hope that they too will remember Gow as place that transforms lives. I am honored to lead the Gow Board of Trustees, and with Mr. Rogers and his team, believe the best is yet to come.

John Bullock ‘80
