POTE’S NOTES Looks and feels like fall may be getting here very soon. I know Nancy and I sure do appreciate the cooler weather, hopefully you all do, too.

CSSA is behind us and we had a really good time this year. Getting to see a lot of people we have been missing was something we had been looking forward to for some time. Have to thank Our Chief Aides Illustrious Dan Baker and his Lady Marilyn (everybody loves Marilyn) and Illustrious Dave Brown and his Lady Jennie (everybody loves Jennie too). They did a great job with Hospitality and kept everyone well hydrated.

Congratulations to all who competed this year! I know The Mounted Patrol, The Clowns, and the Hot Sand Bugs competed and did very well representing Moila.

Some rumors have been going around about CSSA and I’ll try to address them here.

It’s been said that the registration fees will be going up for CSSA Fall Session. I do know that there is nothing set in stone at this point.

However, attendance has been declining and it does cost a lot of money to put on an event like this one.

CSSA faces the same issues as Shriners International and Moila. The less participation you have the more it costs each individual to participate. It’s just another thing that is affected by declining membership.

Speaking of membership, WE NEED NEW MEMBERS. Does anyone have any Master Masons out there who want to be Shriners? If you do please get them a petition and get it turned in ASAP. I promise we will do our very best to get them initiated as a Shriner just as quickly as we can. We are required to have a paper ballot now, so we have to vote at a stated meeting now.

There is no Ceremonial scheduled for fall, but we do plan for a Cold Sands in October. We will also do a Cold Sands at any time we have a voted on and approved candidate.

We still have several Parades on the schedule this year, come out and join us, we will find you a ride! Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the thousands of people affected by the hurricanes in the southern United States, especially the Nobles and Ladies who are having their lives re-arranged for them by Mother Nature.

So sorry I didn’t get an article in the last “Messenger.” I had a lot of physical problems, so I guess I will use that as an excuse.

Our members just keep getting older, and some of us just get those older illnesses. This is just one reason we need new members. We have a really good unit. We love our cars and pickups. We all like to show them. We like to parade. Some take theirs to car shows. We have some Convalescent Centers ask us to bring cars to their center so residents can see them. They really enjoy it. It’s really fun to watch and listen to them talk about when they had one like that.

We also have cookout parties, dinners, and help the Temple doing different jobs. If you are a good Shriner and have a good old car, we would like to talk to you about joining our great Ole Tymers Unit.

Our once a month breakfast at LePeeps is well attended. It is just a good time getting together and visiting.

We want to welcome our newest member, Doug Pohl and his lady Margie.

Some of the activities our Unit has participated in this year: June 17th Gower’s Annual Festival Parade July 4th Mound City Annual Parade -- The parade was great, the food was wonderful, and then things got a little damp with the rain pouring down. Director Bob found out the top of his car wouldn’t go up. With the help of some really good friends (wet friends), they were able to get it up and locked. After Mound City some of our members and their Ladies went to Brownsville, NE to a Riverboat Cruise to celebrate the 4th.

July 29th Ice Cream Social -- Director Bob, Wayne Nold, and Vern Hart manned the Sno Cone Booth, with some of our ladies donating baked cakes.

Aug. 12th Annual Fairfax Parade -- Another great parade and a really good lunch furnished by the ladies of the local Blue Lodge.

Sept. 3rd Wathena Fall Festival Parade -- We had several members and their ladies riding in the parade. Thanks to Chief Rabban Mark Morgan and his Lady Janet for a great lunch!

LEGION OF HONOR The Legion of Honor continues to Ring the Bell and pull the trailer along with presenting the colors at the various parades.

The September meeting will be on the 28th and we will convene on the porch at 1900Hrs. For those interested we will meet at 1730 Hrs for dinner and enjoy the buffet.

The October meeting will be the election of officers for the ensuing year and the same format will be observed as in the September meeting. We will have a lot of parades for the month so please support your LOH club and the Moila in general.

For November, we will meet in the Satellite Room, any LOH member who is current on his dues is welcome to bring his spouse/ significant other is welcome to and enjoy the buffet dinner courtesy of the unit. There will be an open installation of the newly elected officers for the ensuing year.

FROM THE ORIENTAL GUIDE

Nobles, Ladies, All: I am writing today to give you a report of the events this past year that my lady Amanda and I have enjoyed as the Oriental Guide and Lady.

This has been a very unorthodox year for the Elected Divan trying to balance all the events that had been planned or canceled due to the unfortunate shake up that was out of our control, and thankfully, we had Illustrious Mark Crawford step in to fill the shoes. Lady Amanda and I have been learning a lot over the past 9 months especially while attending the Imperial Session, and I have learned even more during our monthly board meetings.

We had the pleasure of witnessing firsthand the power of and reason we do what we do as Shriners while attending the Imperial Session, as the newly appointed ambassadors were introduced to us--Isabella Rose and Emily Mellish! They performed their duet “Free to be Me” and when they walked out on the stage live the tears just started flowing as joy lifted the room!

We also had the pleasure of meeting David Reagan our NASCAR Ambassador and talking to him personally while attending the market place prior to session opening. There was a lot of business that was dealt with while we there too, so don’t get me wrong as there actually was little downtime! We were in session almost all day every day we were in town, except the day prior to session opening. The focus this year is on membership and the importance of sustaining or gaining members. This has all the information for anyone who is not a noble to get answers to any questions they may have to become a Shriner.

I want to thank everyone who helped during the Ice Cream Social Car Show, and especially give a shout to Bruce Baker whom did a spectacular job on sound, and Wayne House for helping my Lady Amanda and me with registrations. We had an increase in contestants this year and have been trending in a positive direction the last three years. We only had one motorcycle contestant this year and I believe it was due to Sturgis. Wayne has agreed to manage the car show next year and I have agreed to assist as needed.

We recently finished up the CSSA Fall Session in Overland Park. This was a wonderful time not only for the Divan, but for all Shriners who participated. This is a time for all attending Shriners to have a wonderful time socializing, competing or watching if you so choose.

I strongly encourage any Shriner to attend next year’s CSSA which will be held in Branson, MO. We attended the Ballyhoo and the night shirt parade opening the ceremonies for the 3-day event. The Hillbillies from Kirksville Shrine Club attended the event and graciously let the Assistant Rabban Bill Pease and me ride on their parade vehicle.

Providing Care for Cleft Lip and Palate at Shriners Hospitals for Children Cleft lip and palate deformities occur when the tissue that forms the upper lip and roof of the mouth fail to join together before birth. Babies may be born with a cleft lip only, a cleft palate only, or both. No two facial clefts are ever the same.

Clefts of the lip and palate, which vary in size because the lips and palate develop at different times, are complex conditions that affect the ability to breathe, speak, hear and eat properly. The condition can also impact patients' appearance and self-esteem. Cleft lip and palate is corrected by reconstructive surgery in conjunction with multidisciplinary therapies.

The condition occurs in approximately one of every 600 live births. In fact, facial clefts are one of the most common birth defects in the U.S. Despite the frequency of its occurrence, and the severity of the deformities, complete care for patients with cleft lip and palate can be difficult to obtain. For this reason, Shriners Hospitals for Children® added cleft lip and palate to the health care system's treatment disciplines.

A Positive Outcome

At Shriners Hospitals for Children, patients with a cleft lip and/or palate are treated by a multidisciplinary team of experts, who work together to solve the many issues associated with this complex condition. Each patient’s unique treatment plan may include surgery, orthodontics, hearing, speech and psychological therapies, along with specialized support. The goal of our treatment program is to help each child achieve optimal function, improve their facial appearance to the fullest extent possible, and improve their self-esteem.

Our medical experts also emphasize family-centered care.

Patients and families are treated as members of the team and are invited to be active participants in the treatment planning and decision making process. Our goal is to foster and maximize the social, physical, and psychological development of our patients.

Overcoming Challenges

Yana is one patient who has benefited from the expertise in cleft lip and palate care available at Shriners Hospitals for Children. She was born with a severe case of cleft lip and palate, and finding the care she required proved difficult - early attempts of physicians to address Yana’s condition were unsuccessful.

When she was 13, she was referred to the cleft lip and palate team at Shriners Hospitals for Children – Shreveport. Under the expert care of Dr. G.E. Ghali, Yana underwent a series of operations involving her palate, nose, teeth, jaw and cheekbones.

“Overall, my speech went from about 4 to a 10 in being able to understand it,” Yana said. “And the team was always willing to go out of their way to help make me comfortable.”

With vastly improved speech, Yana began participating in public speaking events. She earned a spot in a Texas state competition and took first place, and then went on to compete and win first place in a national tournament in Georgia, where she spoke of people who have fought in the face of adversity, told of her own life experiences, and discussed the role of faith as she looks toward a bright future.

Cleft lip and palate is a common and serious condition.

HOT SAND BUGS Greetings from the Moila Hot Sand Bugs!

Cooler weather promises some really fun times at parades in the Bugs and with all the other Moila Clubs and Units that get out this time of year.

CSSA was a great time this year in Overland Park, Kansas. There were a couple of strange things that happened. First off the competition venue had to be moved at the last minute due to a cancellation. The area we had to compete in was about 2/3 what we are used to, but none the less we got our first place again this year! We may never know how we really did in the obstacle course, there were some issues on how the results were tabulated?? I’m told the CSSA Motor Corps will get all those issues figured out and we will look forward to next year in Branson.

Thanks to all of you who came out and supported us at the Third Annual Ill. Don Schuler Memorial Golf tournament and Shrimp Boil. It was a really great night and Fez Foods had “The Motors” providing the music. We had a great Fund-raiser and a good time was had by all.

TRANSPORTATION During August, 2017, four trips were made to St. Louis in the van. We paid out $500 for one patient to drive to Chicago; $900 was paid out for patients to drive to St. Louis. Free Southwest Air passes were used for two patients to fly to Chicago. Hospital expenses for meals, lodging and cab fare paid out was $294.27. Gas expenses paid out for the van were $219.83. Total transportation costs were $1,914.10.
