On Aug. 14, Gov. Michael Parson announced the appointment of Jim Ruse of Gallatin as the Daviess County Presiding Commissioner. Mr. Ruse was the successful Republican candidate in the Primary Election and has no opposition in the General Election. The office was recently vacated by Randy Sims, who resigned to move to Florida. Ruse retired as the assistant superintendent of the Chillicothe R-2 School District. He previously served as the superintendent of the Gallatin R-5 School District for 20 years. Mr. Ruse holds an education specialist degree, a master of science degree, and a bachelor of science degree from Northwest Missouri State University. He and his wife, Shelia, reside east of Gallatin. Public meetings of the Daviess County Commission are regularly scheduled for each Wednesday morning on the second floor of the courthouse in Gallatin. Ruse joins David Cox of Jamesport (1st District) and Wayne Uthe of Altamont (2nd District) to comprise the commission currently serving Daviess County.

Dr. Lee Rogers, a 1996 graduate of Gallatin R-5 High School and now from Las Vegas and Los Angeles, used connections from his medical practice to produce several films in the thriller and shark comedy genre. Three of Lee’s movie productions can be viewed tomorrow on the Syfy Channel. Here’s how Lee got into the movie business. One of Lee’s medical patients was Stephen Furst, who played the character of Flounder in Animal House

(1978). Lee became friends with Stephen and his son, Griff Furst (The Founder, The Magnificent 7) and produced the psychological thriller Cold Dr. Lee Rogers Moon with Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future) which made its theatrical debut in 2017. It’s available on iTunes and Amazon. Lee has also produced mov-

the Bell), Thomas Ian Nicholas (American Pie), and Tara Reid (American Pie, Sharknado). Nightmare Shark (2018) is premiering this year during the Aug. 16 lineup. These movies will replay several other times on Syfy during Sharknado Week and throughout the year. Lee’s movies are also available on syfy.com. Lee has been visiting family and friends in the Gallatin area, showing “small town America” to his friend, Daiane Ferreira.

Judge Chapman a finalist for Court of Appeals seat

Judge Thomas N. Chapman, presiding judge of the 43rd Judicial Circuit (Caldwell, Clinton, Daviess, DeKalb, and Livingston counties) is one of three nominees who has been submitted to fill the vacancy on the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District. This vacancy exists due to the March 2018 retirement of Judge James E. Welsh. Zel M. Fischer, chief justice of the Supreme Court of Missouri and chair of the Appellate Judicial Commission, announced the panel of nominees on Aug. 8. They will be submitted to Governor Mike Parson. The governor has 60 days to select one

member of the panel to fill the vacancy. Should he fail to do so, the Missouri Constitution directs the commission to make the appointment. This panel of three nominees was selected from an initial field of 15 applicants for the vacancy, who were announced on July 20. The commission unanimously supports the three nominees, chosen after approximately five hours of public interviews, more than 1.5 hours of deliberations and four rounds of balloting. Besides Judge Chapman, the other two nominees are W. Ann Hansbrough from Platte County and W. Douglas Thomson from Nodaway County.

Backpack Buddies program sends hunger packing in local school district Backpack Buddies sponsors want to send hunger packing again this year for 60 of the Gallatin School District’s neediest children. Backpack Buddies is a supplemental food program that provides six balanced weekend meals and two healthy snacks to students from food-insecure homes. Over 50% of the children in the Gallatin R-5 School District qualify for free or reduced lunches. School staff see the results of hunger firsthand. Hungry children are tired, grumpy and distracted in class. “We’ve had students get off the bus stating they haven’t had breakfast and are hungry,” says Shonna Morrison, elementary school counselor. “We try to make sure they don’t head to class without something to eat. Otherwise, they won’t be able to focus and class work suffers.” While the school cafeteria can provide stable meals during the five-day school week, what happens when the weekend rolls around? Backpack Buddies is a supplemental weekend feeding program of Second Harvest Community Food Bank. Teachers will stuff the student’s backpack full of kid-friendly meals, fresh, canned and packaged foods — foods that make up a healthy breakfast, lunch and snack, foods that the young people can open and prepare themselves in case there’s nobody home to help.

ies for TV on the Syfy Channel’s version of Shark Week, dubbed Sharknado Week. Three of Lee’s shark movies will air back-toback, starting at 4 p.m. on Aug. 16 on the Syfy Channel. The lineup is Atomic Shark at 4 p.m., Trailer Park Shark at 6 p.m. and Nightmare Shark at 8 p.m. Atomic Shark (2016) stars David Faustino (Married with Children). Students receive the food each weekend during the school year, including extended breaks. Four rotating menus are used during the year to provide a variety of nutritious items.

Last year Gallatin had over 60 children sign up for the program and about the same number have signed up this year. It’s not just elementary students who participate. Students in kindergarten through 12th grade may sign up for the program.

The junior high/high school version of Backpack Buddies is more expensive than elementary, so school staff took it upon themselves to shop and purchase the food and package it for this age group. Joyce Cox, R-5 high school counselor, worked in conjunction with FBLA to make this happen, adding to the time and investment needed to make the program work at Gallatin. “Last year the high school students really looked forward to getting that bag of food on Friday afternoons,” says Mrs. Cox. “As the year went on, they told me what items they really liked,
