3 WHITETAIL MANAGEMENT: MEET WITH YOUR NEIGHBORS BEFORE THE SEASON WWW.WHITETAILPROPERTIES.COM/BLOG - BY: ADMINUSER Let’s face a hard fact: No matter how well you manage your property, or how many immature bucks you let walk, or how many food plots you plant, if your neighbors aren’t attuned to these whitetail management practices, then your efforts are likely going to waste. While ample food, water and cover certainly help, don’t rely on these factors to hold every deer you see on your property. They have a rather large home range, which can be up to a square mile. Unless you own that kind of acreage, it might be a good idea to get everyone around you on the same page to ensure the health and quality of the herd. Start a Co-op The Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) has a program called QDM Cooperative, which is a voluntary co-op where neighboring hunting clubs and properties join together in an effort to grow bigger bucks and sustain the future of deer hunting in the area. Not everyone is going to get on board with this program. Perhaps they only farm and don’t hunt, which is good for you. The mindset, “I pay a lot of money to hunt here just a few weekends a
year, so I’m shooting whatever I want,” is certainly contradictory, but an inevitable barrier. Others will argue that they’re doing just fine with their own private conservation efforts and don’t need to help or be helped. A little encouragement could make these latter folks see the light in time. Contact a Biologist Get a biologist involved to help lay out a plan that’ll give credence to your effort with surrounding landowners. Folks may be put off if they feel someone without the proper wherewithal is trying to tell them how to manage their property. A biologist can cushion the initial impact and help start things off on a good note. Communicate Neighbors

Your
Be patient with your neighbors, even the ones that don’t want to get involved. There will be times when everyone doesn’t see eye to eye and you’ll be forced to compromise. It’s important to remember why you deer hunt in the first place and let that central message be the driving force of the cooperative. Also, the deer herd is not going to

evolve in a year or even two, so don’t get discouraged when big bucks don’t appear overnight. This is about a four-year program and it’s important for everyone to know this before getting started. The upside is the first few years might mean shooting a lot of does to balance the buck to doe ratio, thus a lot of good meat for the freezer. Collect data throughout the year from harvest records, scouting reports, trail cameras, etc. to share with everyone. This might be a tough pill to swallow, especially when giant bucks are involved. It’d be kind of like giving up your favorite fishing hole, but at the same time, that deer is probably not going to just stay on your property, and if he does, then he’ll be protected by the cooperative, which brings us to the next point.
The relationships you build with your neighbors are going to revolve around trust. That’s the name of the game in any relationship, in fact. Hopefully everyone will work together to not only grow and manage the deer herd, but also take a stand against poachers and trespassers. You should all be proud of what you will accomplish and not let anyone hinder the progress. Get to know your local game warden. Make them aware of your plan and have them on speed dial should the lawless ever try to rob you of your hard work. If nothing else, stop by and say hello to your neighbors. You’ll never know what they’re like unless you do. Plus, it helps to break the ice for the future if you ever do want to start some kind of cooperative or perhaps just borrow a tool.

10 Peyton Miller’s 1st Deer
Peyton who was 7 at the time. He started working months before the youth season would start. Helping with putting trail cameras out, planting food plots, get his hunting blind ready, and of course, shooting his new 243. Since he was a able to talk he wanted to go hunting and enjoy the outdoors. He would talk to his dad about hunting each day. He would say “there are so many rules about hunting and things to remember”. He would spend the summer months learning a lot about safety and shooting his new gun. He would learn how to rattle, about scent control, how to and when to use a grunt call, how far his range was with his rifle, about the difference of the grain of bullet he uses and of course, more safety. The morning of youth season Peyton and his dad would see a lot of deer. Peyton rattled in a nice buck on three occasions but he was busted up and wanted to wait. The next morning a nice buck made his way up to the decoy he was using and as soon as he pulled the trigger the buck would jog off making Peyton come up short. You would think he would be disappointed but he would turn to his dad and say, “well, my gun did not kick that hard”, not even worrying about the missed buck.
Peyton would have to wait for the regular season to go out and try again. That opening morning he would rattle and out of the ditch would come a nice buck. His dad would tell him let the buck get about 100 yards from your decoy and shoot him. Peyton would take aim and fired at the buck knocking him to the ground. He was so excited he was trying to crawl out the window and he had to be told he would fall off the platform. He would hug his dad and say “I did it dad”! We gave it about 30 minutes and we walked down to see Peyton’s first buck. He was so excited to get over to our friends farm to show all the guys his dad hunts with. As a new season closes in Peyton has worked hard once again and has a couple bucks he has picked out.

11 scent control hunting tactics www.whitetailproperties.com/blog - by: adminuser When it comes to scent control hunting tactics, we’ve heard it all. There are folks who will rub deer droppings on their clothes or cover themselves with skunk scent to attempt to fool a whitetail’s nose. Sure, those avenues can certainly mask human odor and has led to many successful harvests, but there are a few simple steps you can follow that won’t leave you smelling foul all season long. It starts with a combination of factors: odor control, scent masking and wind direction. The first begins before you ever leave home, and requires you to take care to keep your clothes and body free of odor. In the woods is where scent masking and wind direction come into play. During the rut, doe estrous can work to mask your scent and act as an attractant. No matter the time of year, or time of day for that matter, ensuring you’re downwind from a deer is the only surefire way to reduce your chances of being detected. Odor Control To deer, the deodorants, washing detergents and colognes that we cover ourselves in are a red flag, alerting them to our presence. Even our natural smells, such as the bacteria growth that results from sweating, is enough to ward off a buck. Try to limit those smells as much as possible, starting with your body. Before a hunt, scrub down with odorless shampoo and soap then either dry yourself with a hair dryer or towel that’s been cleansed with odor free detergent. This’ll remove any odor causing bacteria but won’t leave you smelling fragrant. Baking soda is another good option to wash with, as it acts as a natural scent killer. Use an odorless anti-perspirant, too, and consider keeping it in your hunting pack to freshen up while you’re in the woods. Wash your hunting clothes in odorless detergent, then hang them outside. Spray them with a scent killing spray and let them
dry completely. Once dry, store your clothes in an airtight bag until you’re ready to hit the woods. Also, spray any gear you’ll be carrying in the woods, including your safety harness, gloves, hat, hunting pack and treestand seat. Scent Masking Before you enter the woods, spray yourself and your gear with scent killing spray again. Avoid touching any branches with your bare hands, and wear rubber boots, which are naturally scent free. Grab a handful of fresh, fragrant vegetation, wet it, mash it up and then rub it on your clothes before you begin trekking. A mock scrape is a great way to not only mask your scent, but work as an attractant. Create one 20 to 30 yards from your stand. Once in the tree, consider using scent wafers, such as “fresh earth,” that will mask any residual human odor. Wind Direction A whitetail has millions of scent receptors in its nose, capable of picking up subtle odors and even deciphering what they are. For instance, if a deer picks up a smell from a predator upwind, it can determine if it’s a coyote or a human. So, all of the preparation in the world won’t help you if the wind is blowing straight toward the deer you’re hunting. Always, and we mean always, consider the wind direction while hunting. You can keep a wind indicator in your pack to check, which can be as simple as a flag near your stand, or a bottle full of white powder. As a general rule of thumb, you want the wind to blow your scent away from where you anticipate the deer approaching. Mother Nature doesn’t always cooperate, so have back up spots that you can hunt in varying conditions. A big buck getting a whiff of your scent consistently can be enough to push him out of the area or become nocturnal all season long.
