SEVERE WEATHER SURPISES US AS CHANGES POPUP TOO OFTEN Severe winter weather challenges beef herd owners, forecasters and young drivers. Changes in icy weather also stress school administrators deciding to cancel school.

After 10 years of warm winters, I forgot how to scoop deep snow to clear a way for the postman to deliver mail.

Weather forecasts are erratic this winter. I think theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been wrong far more than spot on.

Just this week, an outlook said a light snow on Friday morning. But, it arrived strong. By afternoon snow piled up over four inches.

MU leaders closed classes after 2 p.m. A week earlier, they'd called off classes a day before a severe storm was forecast. Many thought that storm wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t severe, although bitter cold. Driving wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t difficult.

I see public school superintendents wait until early morning to drive the roads before calling off school.

On the early-out day, I met a professor coming back from a lunch meeting downtown. I asked: â&#x20AC;&#x153;How is itâ&#x20AC;? His reply: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Snow isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bad. Drivers are crazy.â&#x20AC;?

In a university town we have many young drivers.

Those whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve driven fewer than 10 years havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t learned

to drive on snow and ice. To me they seem to think speed signs are minimums. On ice thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not wise.

I delayed leaving work after the afternoon closing. A challenging hill on my way home is by the hospital on Broadway. As I neared, I saw flashing blue lights. Police were slowing already slow traffic as a tangle of cars was cleared from the hill.

Some drivers learned quick about driving on packed snow.

Beef herd owners continue to face challenges in this calving season. I asked some about their biggest problem? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mud,â&#x20AC;? one replied. Another said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;We can cope with cold, not mud.â&#x20AC;? They want it to stay cold with no freeze-and-thaw days.

All who watch a cow with new calf marvel at the power of mamaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tongue to dry her baby. Licking urges the baby to get up to nurse its first meal of high-fat high-energy colostrum milk. That first meal jumpstarts survival.

In the past month, many beef herd owners were shocked by sudden deaths of cows. The problem is nitrates in bad hay baled last fall after two years of drought. Lush growth was high in nitrogen.

Plentiful rains brought surges of growth. To boost

production some applied extra fertilizer or manure. A blessing of quick growth car ried a risk. Nitrogen created nitrates in grass stems.

A cow rumen digesting fiber turns nitrates into nitrites. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s normal. But a surge of poison overflows into the blood. Nitrites block uptake of oxygen in blood. No oxygen. No life. Death comes quickly overnight. Unknown hay should be tested before feeding.

Interviewing a toxicologis at the MU diagnostic lab, asked: Where do most cow deaths occur? He wisely replied: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Where there are the most cows.â&#x20AC;?

An MU beef nutritionist has advice. Add starchy grain such as corn, to the diet to speed rumen digestion. Tha uses more nitrates which are needed.

Before adding starch to a hay diet, best ask an area Extension livestock specialis for help. A rumen takes time to adjust to a ration change New microbes must grow.

How do we get needed lessons to more beef herd owners?

Weather related problems face farmers all the time. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s different in severe cold.

I saw a good-news head line: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cold winter weathe boosts beef prices.â&#x20AC;? Tha sounded great until I read the story. Severe cold dropped carcass weights. Now buyers need more calves in feed yards to make up for los pounds.
