Man Charged
Officer Stable After Shooting During Transport The news traveled fast and it was bad: a Trenton police officer had been shot Friday afternoon while transporting a subject for a mental health evaluation. Since then, there has been an outpouring of support for an officer known for her Officer Jasmine Diab friendly, engaging personality. Officer Jasmine Diab was transporting 38-year-old Jamey A. Griffin to St. Joseph Friday afternoon after a 96-hour hold had been placed on him for a mental health evaluation. The two were in Winston when a struggle ensued within Officer Diab’s patrol vehicle and Griffin was able to gain control of her firearm, discharging it into Officer Diab’s abdomen and causing serious physical injury. Griffin of Trenton. Officer Diab underwent two surgeries over the weekend and is in stable condition at a Kansas City hospital.
gunshot wound to the hand during the incident, attempted to flee the scene in the officer’s vehicle, but was detained by bystanders until law enforcement officers arrived on the scene. Witnesses at the scene have indicated that one of the bystanders held Griffin at gunpoint while waiting for assistance. Officer Diab was taken by LifeFlight medical helicopter to a Kansas City hospital, where she underwent two surgeries, one on Friday night and one on Sunday afternoon. Family members have indicated that she remains in serious condition, but is making progress. Officer Diab, who was hired by the TPD in June 2017, is a student at North Central Missouri College and was named to the president’s list for the spring semester. She is the mother of a four-year-old daughter, Amira.

Rain Doesn’t Halt Activities The 2019 Gooseberry Festival is now in the books and despite the rain, several activities were able to be held throughout the weekend. Gooseberry 5K/10K Run/Walk A total of 88 persons took part in the Gooseberry 5K/10K Run/Walk, held on Saturday morning. Derek McClure of Trenton was the overall winner in the male division of the 5K run with a time of 20:27. Amelia Schachtsiek of Monroe City was the female division winner with a time of 23:33. Overall winners in the 10K run were Brent Trickel of Leavenworth, KS, who had a time of 43:04, and Keri Gott of Trenton, who finished with a time of 58:52. Individual division winners
Griffin, who was hospitalized following the shooting, has been charged with first degree assault-serious physical injury or special victim, a class A felony; armed criminal action, also a class A felony; and unlawful use of a weapon - shooting at or from a motor vehicle, at a person, motor vehicle or building, resulting in death or injury, an unclassified felony. He is being held without bond and online court records did not indicate as of press time when Griffin would be arraigned. The incident occurred in Daviess County, thus the charges were filed by Daviess County Prosecuting Attorney Andrea Gibson, with Daviess County Associate Judge Daren L. The Utility Committee of the Trenton City Council will meet at 5 o’clock tonight (Tuesday, June 18) at city hall. Items on the announced agenda include a review and discussion of the 24th Street and Pleasant Plain sewer line project, discussion of electric rates, an update on headworks financing, a review of bids for wood poles and motorized gang-operated air break switches, a review of monthly financial reports, discussion of the net metering policy and department reports. An executive session for personnel will also be held.
Archery Event At Trenton The Grundy County 4-H Shooting Sports Contest will be held in Trenton on Saturday, June 22. The event will be held in the First Baptist Church Activity Center at Trenton with 4-H members from throughout the area taking part. The Grand River Valley Choir and Orchestra presented its summer concert, “How Do I Keep From Singing,” on Saturday night at the First Baptist Church. Tyler Busick and Buddy Hannaford conducted the two groups, who performed a variety of musical selections, culminating with the program’s title song. Program At Crowder Crowder State Park will host a program about trees on Saturday, June 22. The program will take place at the campground amphitheater, beginning at 8:30 p.m. During the program, staff will share facts about the different types of trees that make the park their home. The program will include a short hike to view different tree species. Participants are encouraged to wear insect repellant and closed-toe shoes as well as bring a flashlight.
R-9 Moves Meeting The Trenton R-9 Board of Education has changed the date of its special meeting to close out the school year and adopt the 2019-20 budget to Wednesday, June 26. The board had originally scheduled the meeting for Thursday, June 27. The Wednesday meeting will be held at 7:30 a.m. in the district office.

There were 88 participants in the Gooseberry 5K/10K Run/Walk on Saturday morning. Overall winners in the 5K were Derek McClure of Bethany and Amelia Schachtsiek of Monroe City. The 10K overall winners were Brent Trickel of Leavenworth, KS and Keri Gott of Trenton.
National Weather Service Showers are forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday with the sun returning on Thursday. Highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s and lows as low as 59. The high on Thursday, June 13 at Trenton was 79, Friday’s high was 75. The high on Saturday and Sunday was 87 with .42 of an inch of rain on Saturday and a low on Sunday of 67. The high on Sunday at the Government Weather Station near Spickard was 83, the low was 62.
There will be a new twist to this week’s Main Street Trenton-sponsored “Food Truck Wednesday” on June 19. In addition to Powerhouse Foods of Princeton bringing its food truck back to downtown Trenton, Snowie-NW Missouri will have a shaved ice truck at the downtown location. The trucks will be at 10th and Main streets from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Bright Futures Trenton will be hosting a community “Back to School” event on Tuesday, Aug. 6. The event will be similar to one held last year and is available to help those students and families needing assistance in getting their children ready for the school year. Bright Futures, the Grundy County Health Department and local churches, organizations, businesses and individuals will be coming together to help meet those needs. The day will begin with online enrollment taking place at Trenton High School from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Computers will be provided and R-9 staff will be available to help parents with this process. In addition to enrollment, school supplies, elementary school gym shoes and “gently used’ Bulldog apparel will be distributed. This will also take place at the high school. The health department will be holding its annual health fair at the First Christian Church from 4 to 7 p.m. In addition to health screenings, safety information and hygiene supplies will be provided and games will be available for the children. Clothing and new shoe distribution will take place at the First Baptist Church, also from 4 to 7 p.m. Free student haircuts are also scheduled. Trenton Cinema will be providing popcorn and soda for students from 2 to 6 p.m. Trenton Hy-Vee will host a cookout at Moberly Park from 6 to 8 p.m. for those families who participated in the day’s activities. The day will end with a swimming party at the Trenton Family Aquatic Center from 7 to 9 p.m. According to the Bright Futures Facebook page, donations are being sought for three items needed for the event. Gently-used Bulldog apparel and gym shoes for elementary-aged students can be dropped off at the Community Action Partnership of North Missouri office at 1506 Oklahoma Ave. or placed in collection boxes located at Hy-Vee. Gently worn, clean clothing for students of all ages, preschool through high school, is also needed. Items may be dropped off at the First Baptist Church during business hours. The organization’s Facebook page – Bright Futures Trenton – also lists specific volunteer requests for not only the Aug. 6 event as well as for other needs throughout the year.
