Manufacturing Business

License Granted For Medical Marijuana Facility At Trenton A company that had planned locating a pharmaceutical-grade cannabis cultivation and production facility in Trenton but was turned down in December has now been approved to receive a state license that would allow the business to locate its manufacturing business in the community. Kings Garden Midwest LLC is one of five companies announced on Friday as receiving a medical marijuana facility license from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. According to a news release from the DHSS, the company was granted the license after it was determined that some facilities had submitted duplicate applications for licenses for a single facility, which were then approved by the state. Because only one license can be used for a facility, duplicate license approvals were merged into one,

allowing for the five new licensees to be moved from the “conditionally denied application” list and receive state licensing approval. Micah Landes, executive director of the North Central Missouri Development Alliance, said she was excited by the announcement on Friday, which she noted will mean new jobs for the Trenton area. She said the license approved tor Kings Garden Midwest was for manufacturing only, with the actual number of jobs unknown at this time. She said the application from Kings Garden had received high marks during the original selection process in December, but fell just short of the point number set for initial licensing approval. The state listed the facility address at 3300 Pleasant Plain, however, Mrs. Lan-

des said it is possible the location could change. The original application submitted to the state sought both cultivation and manufacturing licenses for the Pleasant Plain address. But because only a manufacturing license has been granted, a smaller facility could be used. The application noted that Kings Garden Midwest does not own the Pleasant Plain building at this time. The city of Trenton, which worked with NCMDA on the project, has already approved changes to the city ordinance regarding the location of medical marijuana facilities in the community In addition to Trenton, other licenses went to MidAmeriCanna and Nature’s Med MO, LLC at St. Louis, ROI Labs of Atherton at Independence and Missouri Made Marijuana at Grain Valley.

THS ‘Family’ Selects McVay As 2020 Honoree “It’s all about family,” according to this year’s THS Alumni honoree, who calls Trenton High School - it’s administration, it’s faculty and it’s students – family. Graham McVay definitely bleeds Black and Gold and, after a long visit with him, it is so obvious how much he loves Trenton High School, making him a deserving honoree as chosen by the Class of 1995. Growing up a single child and with few relatives around, Graham quickly saw the THS family as his own. The son of Bob and Barbara Perry McVay, his mother was an only child and his uncle had no children, so the only “so-called siblings” that Graham had were first cousins living in Michigan and Colorado. He has lived a simple life, but by his choosing. A proud graduate of Trenton High School, Class of 1982, Graham enjoyed school and his extracurricular activities included junior varsity golf and basketball. Only once did he play varsity on the golf team and that was by accident

when another golfer made a mistake with Coach Ron Hurst and Graham moved to varsity for one meet (and the details will remain unknown). After high school graduation, Graham headed off to the University of Missouri and only one semester showed the quiet and reserved McVay that a university the size of Mizzou was not for him. He returned home and after a year and a half, graduated from Trenton Junior College with his associate in arts degree. Following completion of his two-year degree, he transferred to Missouri Western State University and completed his bachelor of science degree in agriculture. The 1988 university graduate had fulfilled his goal and it was off to find a job. Graham began part-time in the custodial department of the Trenton School District, filling in at Norton School, S.M. Rissler Elementary School, Adams Junior High and THS when custodians were ill or other circumstances created openings. And when a staff member left for knee surgery, Graham once again filled in. It

Showers and thunderstorms are likely each day this week with highs in the mid 80s and lows in the mid 60s. The high at Trenton on Thursday, July 23 was 90, Friday’s high was 94 and Saturday’s high hit 93. The high on Sunday was 96, the low was 75. The high on Sunday at the Government Weather Station near Spickard was 91, the low was 71 and there was .03 of an inch of rain recorded.

McV Vay I s 202 20 THS S Alum mnii Hono oree The 2020 Trenton High School edition of “Alumni News” is in the mail and among the headline stories is the announcement of this year’s alumni honoree. Long time R-9 employee and THS alum, Graham McVay is the selection by the Class of 1995 as the 2020 honoree. A 1982 graduate of Trenton High School, Graham later attended Trenton Junior College, where he earned an associate in arts degree, then graduated from Missouri Western State University in 1988 with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture. He began part-time employment in the custodial department of the Trenton School District when looking for a job after graduation and now, some 32 years later, he is among the most tenured employees of the district. Graham considers the Trenton School District – it’s staff and it’s students - to be his family.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Tim Melia made two saves during the penalty shootout, Gianluca Busio scored the deciding penalty and Sporting Kansas City beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 on penalties after the sides

played to a 0-0 draw in regulation early Monday morning. Kansas City advanced to the quarterfinals of the MLS is Back tournament in a match that wrapped up around 1:15 a.m. Kansas City will face Philadelphia in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Alan Pulido, Ilie Sanchez and Busio scored for Kansas City in the penalty shootout, finally getting shots past Vancouver goalkeeper Thomas Hasal after he spent the night keeping the Whitecaps in the game. Melia saved attempts by Derek Cornelius and Yordy Reyna, and Cristian Dajome’s attempt hit the post and bounced out as the Whitecaps unlikely tournament run came to an end. “Just the life of a goalkeeper right, one one play one decision that affects the game,” Melia said. “Then when you go into a penalty shootout I think our goalkeeper coach does a phenomenal job preparing me and all the goalkeepers for those situations and we

were fortunate to come out on top tonight.” It was the first match in the knockout round of the tournament to go to penalties after the end of regulation. Vancouver needed a 2-0 win over Chicago in its final group game to advance in the tournament, but was playing the entire tournament short-handed due to players opting out and injuries. Kansas City dominated the 90 minutes. It outshot Vancouver 35-8, but only eight of those ended up on target and Hasal saved them all. Hasal started the tournament as Vancouver’s third-string goalkeeper and was called into duty late in the Whitecaps loss to Seattle after Maxime Crepeau suffered a broken finger. Vancouver backup Bryan Meredith left the team in Florida earlier in the tournament after the unexpected death of his mother. Hasal seemed worthy of starting consideration after his performance against Kansas City. He turned away efforts

from Graham Zusi, Roger Espinoza and Johnny Russell in the first half. Hasal stayed strong into the second half, again stopping great scoring chances by Zusi and Pulido early in the half. There was concern midway through the second half if Hasal could continue after a collision with Pulido in the 69th minute. Hasal went low to deflect a cross and Pulido’s shin collided with the back of Hasal’s head. Vancovuer nearly had to ask defender Ali Adnan to step into the goal, but Hasal was cleared to continue. “Thomas needs to stay in his bubble, keep focused, keep working," Vancouver coach Marc Dos Santos said. "It’s the only way he's going to become better and better. But he's showed great signs in the last 180 minutes." Melia had a mostly relaxed night until the shootout, although he came up with a big stop late in the second half denying Adnan’s free kick from 30 yards.

Thompson Wins 3M Open Title Two-Stroke Victory First In Seven Years For Thompson BLAINE, Minn. (AP) — Without a gallery around him on the 18th green, Michael Thompson settled for a subdued victory celebration at the 3M Open with a FaceTime call home to his wife and children in Georgia. The tears came from him and his wife as soon as they saw each other on the screen. Thompson birdied two of the last three holes Sunday for a 4-under 67 and a two-stroke victory, finishing off his second PGA Tour win seven years after his first. “It is a little sad that there wasn’t anybody out there to cheer on some of the great shots that I hit toward the end, but I know everybody who’s rooting for me at least was watching and screaming at their TV,” Thompson said. "This is definitely a win for everybody who supported me throughout the years. It doesn’t diminish the excitement." Adam Long took was second after a 64. Richy Werenski, who had the 18-hole lead and shared it with Thompson after both Friday and Saturday, shot a 70 for his worst round of the

tournament and settled for a nine-way tie for third —- three strokes back. Tony Finau finished in the third-place group, too, after a 68. Finau was the only one among the five world top-30 players in the field to reach the weekend, far outperforming fellow high-profile peers Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Tommy Fleetwood and Paul Casey. Thompson finished at 19-under 265 at the TPC Twin Cities. He was more nervous than he anticipated, even without spectators. “It means so much to get a win, and it gets you into so many different tournaments and solidifies your job for two more years. That’s enough pressure for anybody, let alone having fans out there,” said Thompson, who has a 3year-old son and an infant daughter he and his wife adopted in March. Nobody throughout the windy and muggy week in Minnesota was steadier than Thompson, who entered the week 151st in the FedEx Cup standings and rocketed up to 39th on the way to Tennessee for the World Golf Championships event. He had three bogeys in 72 holes. Defending champion Matthew Wolff was in striking distance after his birdie on the 14th, but he followed three straight pars with a six-stroke bogey on the 18th. His tee shot was wide of the fairway and his fourth try from the rough didn’t reach the green. Wolff finished at 14 under.

ton R-9 School District, Graham feels right at home and has seen several changes along the way. “The addition of the Ron Hurst Wrestling Room and the weight room were much needed, thus allowing us from having to tear down the THS Commons every night before wrestling practice and then return the room to normalcy following practice, Graham said. Other changes he has seen include the addition of the middle school to the high school campus, adding a more ideal setting for the students and, from his perspective, the removal of so many windows with the new addition made it much easier to maintain. When asked about the addition of the new performing arts center, Graham is excited with the addition and is always proud when improvements are made to his alma mater. Graham’s work schedule begins around 6:30 a.m., but he will tell you he is always arriving early as there are lots of things to complete before the arrival of students and staff. By the end of the day (Graham

calls it day at 2:30 p.m.), it’s home to just relax. How does he do that? He enjoys putting model airplanes and cars together, a hobby he has shared for many years. In addition, he is a huge fan of reading, especially mysteries, and his favorite author is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle – the creator of Sherlock Holmes mysteries. As if he hasn’t put enough miles in during the day, he also enjoys the walking trail around the campus and through the parks and is quick to tell you it is 1.3 miles around the trail one time. Graham has lots of stories to tell about his 30-plus years, but one of the most treasured was his nomination to the National Custodian of the Year contest in 2019. He was notified by fromer THS instrumental music instructor Tim Gillham that he had submitted Graham’s name for the award. After weeks of voting from across the U.S., Graham was chosen as a Top 10 finalist and in competition for prizes and recognition. Alums, school personnel and the community were active in voting for Graham and even though he didn’t take the top prize, he was humbled by the support and the

number of people who would stop him in the local store and say, “I voted for you Graham! One more sign of being a part of one big family for Graham. An active member of the First Christian Church, Graham is a deacon and values his family at First Christian and his faith. He was once an active member of the Riverside Country Club and golfed with his father, but after the death of his father, it just wasn’t the same. What did Graham do? He gave his golf clubs to the THS golf program. Lots of different bosses have meant a great deal to him. He says “some were better than others, but never divulging who was and who was not. Graham can quickly tell you the names of the school super-

intendents he has worked under, the names of the THS principals who he answered to and the names of the directors of supportive services who were his direct supervisors as well as how long each served the R-9 School District. Graham hopes to work a while longer, if his health will allow, as he would definitely miss the everyday contact with “his kids and “his co-workers. He said the students are not really his kids, but he likes to call them that. For that reason and many more, it is obvious that the “Kids of 1995 have that same appreciation of their friend Graham. And many other classes have seen Graham as a part of their THS family.

Dear Annie: Shortly after I was born, my mother and biological father divorced. My mother later married the man who I grew up with and will always call "Dad." I didn't know about all of this until I was about 12 years old when my parents told me that my grandmother from my biological father wanted to see me after all these years. Over the years, I kept in touch with my grandmother until she passed away about 11 years ago. During that time, she only briefly mentioned my father. I knew that my father had remarried and had other children, but I knew that his new wife would not allow any mention of me to the other children. Last year, I found my uncle and his son on Facebook and found out my father had died five years previously. I also found out that I had three brothers and two sisters. I am 55 years old. Is it strange that I want to meet them, at least via email or social media? And since they presumably don't know I exist, should I? -- Curious Dear Curious: There is

nothing strange about wanting to get in touch with your brothers and sisters. What is strange is your father's wife's complete denial that you existed and not telling you that he passed away. Contact them. As long as you don't know what your brothers and sisters will be like, try to meet them without having any expectations. Dear Annie: I am responding to the letter, "Anxious to the Point of Paralysis." As someone who struggles with social anxiety myself, I think the advice you offered is very good. I want to suggest some additional resources to the letter's writer. First, there are interactive workbooks that mimic the weekly structure of therapy sessions and contain many of the same exercises that therapists use. One example is "The Mindfulness and Acceptance Workbook for Social Anxiety & Shyness." I have been using it myself, and it is helpful for setting goals and making plans to tackle anxiety in stages. Second, there are websites and apps that connect strangers for conversations. They can be

a good way to practice socializing and become more comfortable talking with people. The most important thing I've learned through my own journey with anxiety is that the only way to improve is by actively putting yourself in the social situations that scare you and getting used to them. -- Anxious in New Jersey Dear Anxious in New Jersey: Thank you very much for your letter. These suggestions look wonderful. Congratulations to you on using helpful tools to manage your anxiety. Dear Annie: I've been with this man for over seven years. In the last couple of years, he's treated me badly by lying. He ignores me when his friends come around. I don't want to stay in this relationship anymore. But it's hard for me to leave him. What will it take for me to leave him before it gets worse? -- Hard to Leave Dear Hard to Leave: Given the way he is treating you, it is going to be a great deal harder in the long run to stay than leave. Try and keep the big picture in mind. It doesn't sound like his behavior is going to change after seven years. Keep the long-term goal in mind that you deserve to be in a relationship of honesty, love and respect.

Euro bulls

Bullish for the euro, bullish for European stocks. That's the takeaway as markets digest the landmark coronavirus stimulus deal struck at the EU summit this week. Led by Germany’s Angela Merkel and France’s Emmanuel Macron, leaders agreed to borrow 750 billion euros ($870 billion) collectively through the European Union’s executive commission and hand out 390 billion euros of that as grants and the rest as cheap loans, weighted toward Spain and Italy. Those two were among the hardest hit by the virus shutdowns. The result should be a stronger rebound that is more evenly spread across

Europe. That’s good for stocks. Meanwhile, threats of a new financial crisis and possible departure of a member of the euro currency seem ever more distant. That’s good for the euro. Morgan Stanley analysts say eurozone stocks could outperform global equities by 10% while the euro, already boosted by bets on a successful summit, could hit $1.17 or $1.18. A loosening of monetary policy by the U.S. Federal Reserve could accelerate that trend. The virus is still out there but the EU action has strengthened confidence about the eventual recovery.
