AT FIELD DAYS, MU SCIENTISTS TELL STORIES OF WHY TO CHANGE At MU Field Days, farmers hear scientists tell new ways toward better farming. That’s worth the trip.

Standing before farmers, scientists come closer to talking farm talk. There’s a huge gap between farm talk and scientific language needed in science journals. Some make the switch easily.

When scientists write for farmers they tend to revert to science.

My mentor, an ag journalist, said a person who wrote a PhD dissertation should be retrained to write English.

From what I see, kids who grew up on farms and earn PhDs make the switch easier.

Dale Blevins, MU professor who taught ag chemistry, proved that. He’s from an Ozark dairy farm. So, when he taught about calcium he told of lime that sweetens sour soil. He told of cows converting calcium into milk.

Milk drinkers get calcium to make strong bones. He told stories.

Dale probably had a chemistry teacher like mine. He wrote chemical equations on the black board. Erasing them, he told no narratives.

Blevins won a top teacher award in ag school. When assigned to write that news, I sat in on his classes. There, I learned about calcium.

Not all Chem One students go on to be PhDs in chem-

istry. Some become farmers and some journalists.

In journal articles, scientists write in great detail, telling how their experiment worked. Other scientists must duplicate that research to prove the same results. That makes science strong.

Scientists talking to farmers should tell not how, but “the why� results are important.

(Cows eating grass grown on calcium-rich soil make more and better milk. Consumers need that.)

A farmer doesn’t need to know all chemical reactions in that long chain. Farmers need to know why to test and lime soil. The cows will tell them why when putting more milk in the milk tank.

Good MU Extension specialists know to teach with stories. That’s the purpose of field days at MU research farms. I saw it again Sept. 10 at MU Forage Systems Research Center.

Farmers heard 10-minute versions of “the why� of new research. This may not be published yet in scientific journals. When farm-talk stories are told field day visitors get the benefit.

On Sept. 24, farmers will hear heifer breeding stories and more at MU Thompson Farm, Spickard.

FSRC stuck with a day of presentations. Thompson Farm switches to an evening,

starting at 3:30 p.m. When they changed last year, more farmers who have off-farm jobs attended.

Field days provide journalists with stories for newspapers and magazines. That spreads the word, further. Ag journalists become translators, changing obscure talk into farm talk that even town folk understand.

Hopefully those stories come in narratives to hold attention.

University administrators want their stories told as well.

But, bureaucratic language has the common name of “gobbledygook.� Good ag journalists become skilled translating that as well.

In an unfortunate cost-cutting binge, MU leaders killed Ag Journalism degrees. Now graduates without ag journalism training are “strategic communicators.� To me, an old ag journalist, that’s “gobbledygook.�

Strategic communicators may never learn differences between a cow, bull, steer, heifer, calf, feeder or stocker.

Bovines come in many forms.

Sometimes ag stories in national media refer to all bovine as “cows.� Farmers know the difference and credit all such as ‘fake news.�.

Media without ag journalists even report that “cow farts� cause global warming.

In years of following cows, I never heard one fart. They belch. But, cows also recycle lots of carbon back to the soil to grow more grass.

Yep, cows recycle some calcium as well.
