When driving down the road in the midwest it's common to see a pasture full of cattle or miles of crop fields, but something that is overlooked is aquaculture. From the fish you buy at the store to the shrimp served fresh at the best seafood restaurant in town, these popular seafoods are raised in fish hatcheries globally and nationally. Aquaculture also includes the study and growth of marine plant life and restoration such as coral reefs and seaweed. According to the website fishwatch.gov, 5% of the seafood nationally consumed comes from United States aquaculture, the rest is either imported or harvested from natural water sources.

This may seem like a small percentage of agriculture comes from the U.S., but it is estimated to increase annually by 8%. Aquaculture benefits seafood production, protects aquatic species, and marine plant life growth and here is how.

Publishing Your Wedding Announcment In The Newspaper For Future Generations Story by Ronda Lickteig, R-T News Writer With all the planning that goes into a wedding and the magnitude of the day, it’s hard to believe that a few years down the road the details start to get fuzzy. By your 10year-anniversary you might have to think awhile before you remember who cut your cake (the groom might not know that detail long before that!). When your kids - and later grandkids - start asking questions, they might wonder if you were even there!

Unless, of course, you have a record of the day published in the Trenton Republican-Times.

Once upon a time nearly every engaged couple had their picture published in the paper announcing the impending nuptials. Then, of course, came the wedding announcement, complete with a description of the dresses for the bride and her attendants, the names of the entire wedding party and often their relationship to the bride or groom. If the bride carried out the “something old, something new, something

borrowed, something blue” tradition, those items were listed with the significance of each one included. A description of the cake was detailed enough to make your mouth water and have you reaching for a cup of punch. The details were printed on the R-T’s society page and then cut out for the scrapbook.

Over the years the tradition of publishing the wedding announcement has faded as social media has become the way to announce engagements, weddings and just about any other milestone. While that’s okay, I have to wonder what will happen 10, 20 or 30 years down the road when kids, grandkids, etc., start thinking about those who came before them and want information about the high points of their lives.

Facebook isn’t going to tell the details that will become more and more interesting as time goes on.

My parents divorced when I was very young and their wedding (actu-

ally an elopement) wasn’t a big topic of conversation. I recently found the announcement in the Alexandria (LA) Daily Town Talk newspaper archives. The article said they were married in Natchez, MS, which I knew. What I didn’t know was that they had been the guests of honor at a shower hosted by my mom’s aunt and uncle when they returned. Not only did everyone reading that article in 1953 find out that Barbara and Ronnie got married, but more than 60 years later their daughter got to read about the shower and the 63 people who attended it thanks to digital newspaper archives.

Who says newspapers aren’t still relevant?

It’s easy to believe that we’ll rem e m b e r everything about the big day and we can even convince ourselves that no one will care 20 years from now.

But that’s just not true and the staff at the Republican-Times is here to make sure the details
