R-9 Program Celebrates Helping Students Community involvement with the local education system was very much in evidence on Friday when volunteers of Bright Futures Trenton gathered at Trenton High School to celebrate the program’s impact on students in the R-9 School District. The second annual volunteer appreciation breakfast was highlighted by a visit from the executive director of the Bright Futures Program, Kim Vann, who thanked the volunteers for what they are doing to make a difference in the lives of area school children. “Sometimes you won’t see that impact for decades and you might wonder whether or not all that hard work was worth it,” she said. “But you are making a difference. And on behalf of those students, I thank you.” Bright Futures also presented its two recognition awards, with the Trenton RepublicanTimes being named the “Partner of the Year’ while R-T news writer Ronda Lickteig was honored as the “Champion of the Year.” The Republican-Times partners with the Trenton R-9 Preschool to provide snack packs and other items for preschool students in need. Mrs. Lickteig not only coordinates those efforts for the newspaper, but also serves as a member of the preschool site council, is a lunch buddy to a student at the middle school and works with Hodge Presbyterian Church to provide shoes to students through the New Soles for Bright Futures program. Cara McClellan, a member of the Bright Futures Advisory Board, presented the awards. Co-coordinators Terri Critten and Lynn Griffin outlined some of the programs which have been instituted in the Trenton R-9 School District through Bright Futures. Those programs have provided students in need with food, clothing and positive role models through activities such as Lunch Buddies, one-on-one mentoring and reading sessions. Students also get a chance to learn about career choices through career fairs at the end of the school year as well as a
