Briefs... City Council To Meet

Downtown Christmas Events Planned

The Trenton City Council will meet in regular session at 7 o’clock tonight (Tuesday, Nov. 13) at city hall. This is a day later than the normal meeting date due to the Veterans Day holiday. Items on the announced agenda include an ordinance authorizing an agreement with Danny Stevens for rental of a portion of the large hangar at the Trenton Municipal Airport; an ordinance authorizing an agreement with Customized Enviromental Solutions for removal, transportation and disposal of lime sludge at the city’s water treatment plant; an ordinance authorizing an agreement with American Fire Training Systems for construction of a fire training tower; an ordinance authorizing an agreement with Independent Electric Machinery Company for appraisal testing and maintenance services on the city’s switchgear substation equipment; an ordinance repealing a section of the city’s current building permit ordinance; and an ordinance accepting and approving 32.69 feet of Riverside Drive and the cul-de-sac located at the end of the Riverside Drive subdivision, including dedication to public use; discussion/approval of a crane bid. There will also be discussion/approval of financing for the fire training center; discussion of S&P Global rating in connection with the city wastewater project; discussion/acceptance of property at 111 W. 11th St.; appointment of a replacement for Larry Bailey on the Building and Nuisance Board; discussion of asphalt plant electric motors; and discussion and approval of asphalt scale bid. An executive session for real estate is also scheduled.

Agenda Addition The Grundy County Commission has made an addition to its agenda for today’s (Tuesday, Nov. 13) meeting. In addition to meeting with Ambulance Director Steve Tracy at 10 a.m., the commission plans to hear a University of Missouri Extension update from April Meighen, youth program assistant for Grundy County Extension, at 11 a.m.

R-6 Board Meeting The Pleasant View R-6 Board of Education will meet in regular session at 4:30 p.m. today (Tuesday, Nov. 13) at the school. Items on the announced agenda include building projects, second reading of policy updates, health insurance, the 2017-18 audit and the superintendent’s report. An executive session for personnel is also planned.

Preservation Committee Meeting The Historic Preservation Committee of the Trenton City Council will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14. The meeting will be held at 713 Main St., which is the new location of the North Central Missouri Development Alliance office. The only item listed on the announced agenda is continued work on downtown historic district designation.

Grundy R-5 Board To Meet The Grundy R-5 Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at the school in Galt. Items on the announced agena include approval of filing dates for the April board election, a review and approval of the 2017-18 audit, approval of board policies and updates, a financial report, principal reports, and program evaluations for the health services, homeless/migrant and facilities and grounds programs. An executive session for personnel and personnel records is also scheduled.

Castle Hood, a kindergarten student in Molly Buenemann’s class, presented a card to Capt. Jesse Meek of the Missouri National Guard, during Veterans Day activities held at Rissler Elementary School on Friday. The Rissler Student Council organized a program recognizing veterans and active military personnel before hosting a reception in the cafeteria.

Building Fresh Water Wells

THS Hosting Fundraiser Trenton High School will host the “Holly Jolly Jog,” a 5K/10K run and 5K walk on Saturday, Dec. 15 at the high school to benefit The Thirst Project. Registration will get under way at 8:45 a.m., with the race set for 9:30 a.m. Participants are encouraged to run or walk in their ugliest Christmas sweater and are also encouraged to bring their dogs.

The Thirst Project has been described as “an army of socially-conscious young people on a mission to end the global water crisis by building fresh water wells in Swaziland.” The 5K and 10K races will be broken into seven age brackets: 10-and-under, 11 to 13, 14 to 18, 19 to 28, 29 to 38, 39 to 48 and 49 and See Run, Page 4

TAMA Thanksgiving Service The Trenton Area Ministerial Alliance will hold is annual community Thanksgiving service on Sunday, Nov. 18 at the Ketcham Community Center. The service begins at 6:30 p.m., with the service being conducted by TAMA members. A freewill offering will be collected, with money going to the TAMA Good Samaritan Fund, The fund provides financial help to individuals needing assistance with utility bills.

R-T Thanksgiving Deadlines With the Republican-Times office being closed on Nov. 22 and 23 for the Thanksgiving holiday, news and advertising deadlines for the Friday, Nov. 23 newspaper have been changed. The Nov. 23 edition will be printed on Wednesday, Nov. 21 due to the Thanksgiving holiday. News to be included in the Nov. 23 edition must be received at the newspaper office no later than 8 a.m. on the 21st. Advertising for the Nov. 23 edition must be submitted to the Republican-Times office no later than 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20

Curtis Sneden of Topeka, KS brought magic to the Green Hills Animal Shelter annual chili supper on Saturday evening at the First Christian Church activity center. Sneden worked the crowd during the supper and then performed on stage, where he astonished the crowdwith his feats, including Dan and Sue Cooksey. Above, Sneden escapes from chains secured onto him by Dan. The event raised approximately $1,550 for the GHAS.

National Weather Service Sunny skies are expected this week with highs in the 40s and lows as low as 23. The high on Thursday at the Government Weather Station at Trenton was 34, with one inch of snow. Friday’s high was 32 with 1.5 inches of snow. Saturday’s high was 31, Sunday’s high was 46 and the overnight low was 26. The high on Sunday at the Government Weather Station near Spickard was 46, the low was 24.

Christmas will be celebrated in Trenton on Saturday, Dec. 1 with a downtown holiday event. “Trenton Downtown Christmas” will kick off with a soup supper and continue throughout the evening with a number of activities before coming to an end with the singing of “Silent Night” at the Five Points flag pole. In between will be the lighting of Sesquicentennial Park, musical performances and a parade. Downtown businesses will also be open during the evening for persons to do some holiday shopping. The VFW Hall will be the site for a soup supper to be served from 4:30 to 7 p.m. A variety of soups will be available for sale, along with desserts and drinks. The cost is $5 per person. Opening ceremonies will take place at the park, beginning at 5 p.m. with a representative from the Trenton Area Ministerial Alliance giving a prayer before Mayor Dr. Nick McHargue presides over the official lighting of the park. A parade of golf carts, ATVs and vintage vehicles takes place at 5:15 p.m., with entries lining up in front of Geyer Hall on the NCMC campus at 4:50 p.m. and continuing down Main Street to Ninth Street, then back around to Five Points. Businesses from throughout the community are especially encouraged to participate, advertising not only their business but what they will have available for shoppers during the holiday season. The throwing of candy from the parade vehicles is also being allowed. For more information or to make an entry, persons can contact Cindy Jennings at 359-1923. Prizes will be awarded for the best decorated entry. At the end of the parade will be Santa Claus, who will be available for photos in the Sesquicentennial Park beginning around 5:25 p.m. Parents and grandparents are encouraged to bring their little ones and take a photo during their visit with Santa. Entertainment kicks off at around 6:10 p.m. at the Five Points flag pole with dancers from the Super Stars Dance Studio, followed by the Rissler Elementary School Honor Choir singing several selections at 6:20 p.m. More dancing will take place at 6:30 p.m. as Midwest Synergy Dance students will be performing. A handbell choir comprised of several area residents will be playing holiday music at 6:45 p.m. in the “Crooks and Son”  building at 1000 Tinsman Ave. Entertainment will conclude at 7:15 p.m. at the flag pole with the singing of “Silent Night.” Additional events planned See Christmas, Page 4
