TRENTON R-9 SCHOOL BOARD

Commission Plans Meeting

Donations Providing Arts Center Upgrades Additional upgrades to the new performing arts center have been approved, thanks to private donations accepted by the Trenton R-9 School District during a meeting of the board of education on Tuesday night. The Hoover Foundation and Troy and Cathy Smith will be making contributions of $125,000 and $25,000, respectively. The money, along with $6,000 from the school district, will be used for several changes to the facility which Project Manager Dennis Gutshall said will make the center “more functional.” The biggest improvement will be the addition of a bathroom/mop area in the makeup/dressing room, which will allow for access to water. The original plan did not have any water being brought into the performing arts center due to cost considerations. Other improvements include a vinyl protective wall covering for both the interior walls and entrance area, lighting upgrades, an aluminum reveal and replacement of HVAC defusers See R-9, Page 11

Dorris Rider Art Gallery

Instructor’s Art Work Now On Display A collection of works by a Trenton resident will continue the 2019-2020 exhibition schedule in the Dorris Rider Art Gallery on the North Central Missouri Colleg ecampus. “A Retrospective…So Far!” by Jim Norris is now open and will be on display through Friday, Dec. 13. The collection contains work from two solo exhibitions - Cautionary Tales (2016) and Raised on Promises (2018) – as well as paintings from several group shows from the past couple of years. Two brand new paintings are also included. “As the director of the gallery, I was slightly hesitant to display my work

here because I think it’s important to bring in perspectives from outside our community,” Norris said. “However, as a painter I ultimately wanted to share my art with my local friends and family.” The paintings are labeled as mixed media artworks, utilizing a wide variety of materials such as oil paint, spray paint and enamel. Norris’s art has been described as easily recognizable because of the regular presence of imagery such as blackbirds, blindfolds and shiny gold leaf. He also regularly incorporates the human form. Hotel/Motel Tax Issue Suggested For April Election The Economic Development and Administrative committees of the Trenton City Council met on Tuesday night, Nov. 12 at city hall. The Economic Development Committee voted to recommend to the city council that a hotel/motel bed tax issue be placed on the April 7, 2020 election ballot. The 5 percent tax would be assessed as part of the charge to individuals who rent hotel/motel rooms in Trenton. The committee also voted to present a draft brochure to the city council, promoting activities and attractions in and around Trenton. The Economic Development Committee will meet again at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10. During the Administrative Committee meeting, members voted to recommend to the council a policy that would not have the city place any specialty signs. Currently, the police chief and street department make decisions on whether or not a street sign is to be installed. It was also decided to have the city attorney research row crop rental agreements and draft an agreement for review by the committee at its next meeting. This comes after the council recently rejected bids to rent city-owned property for farming purposes due to a concern that the contracted time of the contract was not long enough. The committee will be meeting at 7 p.m. on Dec. 10.
