Trenton Selected For Grant Program The Trenton Downtown Improvement Association has been selected in a competitive application process to participate in a cost-sharing affiliate grant that provides training, mentoring and technical services to revitalization programs in Missouri’s historic commercial districts. The grant is being provided by the Missouri Main Street Connection, Inc. MMSC staff will visit with Trenton’s downtown community leaders to evaluate existing and future needs of the downtown, then schedule a series of customized training and mentoring sessions to assist those leaders in concentrating on their local revitalization goals. “Trenton has great potential in their historic downtown and MMSC is excited to work with their organization in order to achieve success,” MMSC State Director Gayla Roten said. The goal of the grant is the development of a sustainable, volunteer-based organization that will carry out an economic development program based on the preservation of historic assets in the downtown, using the Main Street FourPoint Approach® to Revitalization. With support from MMSC, the Trenton revitalization group anticipates: • Building on previous revitalization efforts to motivate economic develop-

ment in the district. • Utilizing a volunteer base and strong partnerships to accomplish the organization’s goals for downtown. • Showcasing the community’s unique architecture and history to attract both residents and visitors to experience the historic district. During the next two years MMSC will provide Trenton with training and mentoring to establish a revitalization organization that will engage the entire community as a participant and beneficiary. The group also will attend regional revitalization workshops and conferences conducted by MMSC. The affiliate grant is a 40/60 match, requiring the community to contribute 40 percent of the cash value of the services. The total value of the grant in training and mentoring services is $24,000. Trenton is now also designated as an affiliate in the Missouri Main Street Tier Structure, which ranks progress on standards established by the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Main Street Center. Throughout its history, MMSC has served over 178 Missouri communities. ********** As the new executive director of the Trenton Downtown Improvement Association, Megan Derry will be working with the implementation of the

I am eager to get started and see the downtown move forward.” Her job will also include working with the city’s Historic Preservation Committee, which has been meeting to establish a historic downtown district. She noted that historic preservation is important in the downtown area and is an important part of the Main Street Missouri concept. Expansion Considered
Charter Schools Draw Mixed Reviews JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Some parents are praising legislation that would expand charter schools in Missouri, while administrators for traditional public schools are raising concerns that they will drain resources. Republican Rep. Rebecca Roeber, of Lee's Summit, has introduced a bill that would allow charter schools in any city with more than 30,000 residents, the Columbia Missourian reports . Currently, charters are mostly limited to students residing in the Kansas
City and St. Louis districts, as well as those in unaccredited school systems. "I am not against traditional public schools," Roeber said. "However, when they are not working for kids, families should have other options." During a hearing this past week before the House Committee on Elementary and Secondary Education, several parents, teachers and education stakeholders shared emotional testimony about how school choice has opened access to quality education.
GREAT NORTHWEST DAY AT THE CAPITOL
Carmen Ward said her son, who has autism and intellectual disabilities, bounced around public and private elementary schools in St. Louis for years. She said it wasn't until he reached fifth grade that Ward found somewhere that met his special educational needs: KIPP, which is short for the Knowledge is Power Program, part of a national nonprofit network of public charter schools. State Historical Society of Missouri. The roundtable presentations wrapped up with Becky Cleveland of Brookfield Industrial Development Authority giving a report on the Communities of Excellence program.
