GRUNDY COUNTY SPELLING BEE Josh Truitt is Champion

TMS Seventh Grader Earns County Title For awhile, it looked like deciding the champion of the 2020 Grundy County Spelling Bee was going to take some time. The spelling bee, held on Thursday, Jan. 30 in the Trenton Middle School Media Center, began with 29 students and after five rounds, there were just three students left. But it would take another nine rounds before the eventual champion would be known. When it was all said and done, Trenton Middle School seventh grader Josh Truitt claimed the title, correctly spelling “throttle” and “brayed” in Round 14 to beat out Jaiden Carter of Laredo R-7, who had just misspelled the word “tarry.” The two had been battling it out since Round 11, when Jimmy Berry of Grundy R-5 misspelled his word to finish as the first alternate. The second alternate was Christy Stretch of Pleasant View R-6, who left the contest in Round five. If Truitt, who was the seventh grade champion in the TMS Spelling Bee two weeks ago, was nervous, he certainly didn’t show it. He stepped up to the microphone in each round and confidently spelled the word he was given, even if it was sometimes not right. But Miss Carter and Berry also had some slipups along the way as well, resulting in the continued battle through Round 11, when Berry was eliminated. Round 12 saw both Truitt and Miss Carter misspell their words (amino and garnet, respectively), only to come back and spell “luggage” and “teak” correctly in Round 13.

Josh Truitt, a seventh grader at Trenton Middle School, was declared the 2020 Grundy County Spelling Bee champion following competition on Thursday in the TMS Media Center. Truitt, pictured, at left, won the spelling bee with the word “brayed.” He and Jaiden Carter of Laredo R-7, pictured second from left, will represent Grundy County in the Northwest Missouri Regional Spelling Bee in St. Joseph on Saturday, March 7. Also pictured are Jimmy Berry of Grundy R-5, first alternate (second from right); and Christy Stretch of Pleasant View R-6, second alternate (far right)

“I didn’t really practice that much,” Truitt confessed, adding that there were some words he didn’t know at all. But now that he is the county champion and is on his way to the regional competition, Truitt said he knows he will need to spend a lot of time brushing up on his spelling skills. Truitt and Miss Carter will represent Grundy County at the Northwest Missouri Spelling Bee in St. Joseph on Saturday, March 28. Berry and Miss
