Best Practices Recognized

County Conservation Awards Presented The Grundy County Soil and Water Conservation District honored two farm families during a luncheon on Friday afternoon at the North Central Missouri College Barton Farm Campus. David and Bonnie Kramer were named the 2020 “Cooperator of the Year” in recognition of their farm practices while John and Frances Engleman were named the “Soil Health Steward of the Year” in recognition of their efforts in improving the health of their farmland. The awards were presented by board members David Meservey and John Rice. The Kramers purchased their family farm, located southeast of Trenton, about 20 years ago and have since added to it. The farm has a long tradition of notill farming, dating back to the mid 1970s, when

Kramer’s father, Maynard, purchased his first no-till planter. No-till is the predominant planting method currently used on the farm. The Kramers have also taken advantage of the Conservation Reserve Program, establishing grass waterways. The Kramers are working toward a goal of having all of their highly erodible land terraced, having already installed 27,200 feet of terraces and 21,500 feet of tile. In addition to their farming operation, David owns and operates Underwood Farm Supply, a retail ag input supplier and propane business, while Bonnie is a fulltime school teacher in the Riverside School District in Oakland, IA. The Englemans moved to their farm, located north of Laredo, in 1973. Starting with five acres of land

and working full-time jobs in Trenton, the couple continued to add acres to their operation and use both wide and narrow base terraces on their tillable acres. After retiring from their jobs in 2000, the Englemans added beef cows to their operation. They use costshare on terraces, structures and cover crops. Noncost-share funds have also been used on field drain tile on their bottom land and pond cleanouts on their old ponds. The couple also participate in the CRP program. In addition to the awards ceremony and luncheon, Luke Skinner, resource conservationist forester with the Natural Resource Conservation staff, gave a presentation on conservation practices.

Harrison County Sheriff Josh Eckerson has died as the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident occurred late Thursday night at a residence in Bethany, where the sheriff’s department, Bethany Police Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol were called to at around 10:16 p.m. MSHP Sgt. Jake Angle said law enforcement found Eckerson to be deceased at that residence. Angle said that further investigation into the death would be conducted by the Bethany Police Department. Angle also confirmed the patrol had been requested to conduct an investigation of Eckerson regarding an incident on Feb. 26 and had submitted a probable cause affidavit to special prosector Adam Warren. Warren had filed three charges against Eckerson in Daviess County Circuit Court on Thursday, including misuse of official information by a public servant, first degree trespassing and domestic assault.
