Annual Meeting Is Friday
Keuhn, Schlarb Will Be Honored As ‘Pillars’
Grundy R-5 Board Meeting The Grundy R-5 Board of Education will meet in regular session at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13 at the school in Galt. Items on the announced agenda include mowing bids, a discussion concerning transportation, board policies and updates, a financial report and reports from the special education director, the elementary principal and the junior/senior high principal. An executive session for personnel, personnel records and student matters is also planned.
It is said that when you want something done, ask the busiest person you know. The choices for the 2019 Trenton Area Chamber of Commerce Pillars of the Year certainly personify that statement 10-fold. R.W. Keuhn and Phil Schlarb are both natives of Trenton and are quick to point out the importance of “giving back” to the community in which their lives were shaped. Both men graduated from Trenton High School and attended Trenton Junior College (Schlarb is a graduate). And after earning a four-year degree and taking time out for the military (Keuhn) and additional education (Schlarb), both men chose to come back to Trenton and make it their permanent home. For 37 years, Keuhn, along with his wife Twyla, owned and operated the Gift Nook at Eastgate Shopping Center. The couple raised their two sons (Dr. David Keuhn and Matt Keuhn) here and it was during that time that Keuhn began his journey as a community volunteer. “When we opened the store, it seemed like we were there all the time and it was hard to get involved,” Keuhn said. “But then once our kids got old enough and started to become involved in things, that’s when we did, too.” That involvement included both athletics and Boy Scouts, with Keuhn serving as a coach as both sons moved from league to league while participating in TBA. He was also a scout leader for Troop 99, where both of his sons earned their Eagle Scout awards. “I really enjoyed baseball and scouts,” Keuhn said. “I think it’s important to get involved with things that mean
R-9 Superintendent Reception The public is invited to attend a reception on Wednesday, March 13 for new Trenton R-9 Superintendent Mike Stegman. The reception will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. at the district office, located at 1607 Normal St. Stegman, who was hired by the board of education earlier this year, begins his new duties on July 1.
Community Blood Drive The Community Blood Center will be bringing its bloodmobile to Trenton on Monday, March 18. The bloodmobile will be at the North 65 Center from noon to 6 p.m. and is being sponsored by the Grundy County RSVP and Trenton Lions Club. To make an appointment, persons can go online to esavalifenow.org and enter the sponsor code TN. Donors can also come to the North 65 Center during the scheduled donation times.
Spring Hike Planned Crowder State Park staff will be hosting a “Spring into Spring” hike along the Tall Oaks Trail on Saturday, March 23. The hike will get under way at 10 a.m., with hikers to meet at Shelter 3 parking lot. Staff members will be pointing out interesting features along the 3.2 mile trail. Hikers are reminded to bring water and to wear weather-appropriate clothing.
TMS Choir Fundraiser The Trenton Middle School Choir will hold its annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser, “Thank You for the Music,” on Friday, March 22. The eat-what-you-want, pay-what-you-want event will be held in the THS commons, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Members of the TMS Choir will be performing during the evening. All proceeds will be used to allow the choir to participate in the Worlds of Fun Choir Festival on Saturday, April 13.
Shelter Funds Awarded JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Three Missouri school districts will receive $3.5 million to build tornado shelters. The State Emergency Management Agency announced Thursday that the grants will go to schools in Christian (Sparta), Lawrence (Miller) and McDonald (Goodman) counties. The planned safe rooms would shelter more than 2,250 people. The projects will require local matches ranging from 10 to 25 percent.

something and those two things certainly meant a lot to our family.” Another passion he has is his involvement with the Community Food Pantry. Not only does he serve on the board of directors, it’s not uncommon to find him there as a volunteer several hours each week. “I think he would be there every day, all day, if he could,” his wife, Twyla said. He is a past member of the Trenton Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors as well as the Eastgate Merchants board. He has served several terms as a member of the Grundy County-Jewett Norris Library Board and is a long-time trustee of the Edinburg IOOF Cemetery Board. He was one of the original volunteers with the Missouri Day Marching Band Festival and also works each year as a volunteer at the NCMC Holiday Hoops. An active member of the Trenton First Baptist Church, Keuhn has taught Sunday school, served on various committees, been a member of the choir and has even found time to drive the church van when needed. “You should be involved in what you enjoy,” he said. “You’ll do a much better job if
you enjoy it.” And in Keuhn’s case, his enjoyment has been the community’s benefit. ********** Schlarb has never been one to shy away from a volunteering opportunity. During his 38 years at North Central Missouri College first as a business instructor and then as an associate dean Schlarb served the school in various capacities as a division chair, faculty senate president, Phi Theta Kappa sponsor and chaired the events recognizing NCMC on its 50th, 65th and 75th anniversaries. He coordinated various vocational and technical education programs, then helped write grants that provided $3.9 million for those programs. But being busy on the NCMC campus did not keep Schlarb from also lending his time and talents to the community-at-large. As a business owner (Eastside Cleaning Center and ComputerAid), Schlarb and his wife, Judy, were members of the chamber and, as such, Schlarb took on the role of chamber board president - not once, but twice. He also served six years on the Trenton Park Board, including See Chamber, Page 6
