Briefs... Honor Society Initiation Trenton High School National Honor Society and Trenton Middle School National Junior Honor Society will hold a joint induction ceremony at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24 in the THS gym. Sixteen NHS members and 15 NJHS members will be inducted. Senior NHS members will also be honored in a cording ceremony. TMS/THS Assistant Principal Kasey Bailey will deliver the message. All current and new members and their families and friends are invited to attend. A reception will follow in the THS commons. E’Lisha Gass is the advisor for both organizations.

Pool Committee Meeting The Pool Committee of the Trenton Park Board will meet at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24 at city hall. Items on the announced agenda include discussion of pool pricing and lifeguards.

You couldn’t have asked for a better day than Saturday for the annual Community Easter Egg Hunt held at Moberly Park. The event, sponsored annually by the Trenton Kiwanis Club and Trenton High School Key Club, drew many youngsters who found plenty of candy to fill their baskets.

Public Health Month The Grundy County Health Department will celebrate Public Health Month with a free barbecue luncheon for the public on Friday, April 26. The event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the lower level of the health department, located at 1716 Lincoln St. In addition to meeting staff members, there will also be giveaways and prize drawings.

52 Counties See Numbers Drop

Some Growth In Missouri In 2018 ST. LOUIS (AP) — New census data shows that while Missouri's population rose slightly last year compared to 2017, more than 50 counties lost population. Recently released data shows estimated county populations as of July 1, 2018, compared to the previous year. Missouri overall saw its population rise 0.3% to an estimated 6,126,452. But the Census Bureau data shows that 52 of Missouri's 114 counties and the city of St. Louis lost population. Southeast Missouri in particular saw significant declines. Pemiscot County lost 3.2% of its population, the biggest decline in the state. Dunklin County had a 2.2% decline, and Carter and Mississippi counties both lost 1.8% of their populations. Six other counties in the region saw net losses. Pemiscot County Presiding Commissioner Mark Cartee said there simply aren't enough jobs to keep young people around once they get out of school, especially since farming has become so auto-

Population Drop In Area Counties All nine counties of the Green Hills Area saw a decline in population between 2017 and 2018, according to th U.S. Census Bureau data. Decreases ranged from 0.3 percent in Livingston County to 7.3 percent in Sullivan County. Grundy County’s population dropped by 3.4 percent, going from 10,261 in 2017 to 9,914 in 2018. Other counties, their 2017 population, 2018 population and percentage change included: Caldwell - 9,424; 9,108; -3.4 percent Daviess - 8,433; 7,451; -4.8 percent Harrison - 8,957; 8,414; -6.1 percent Linn - 12,761; 12,037; -5.7 percent Livingston - 15,195; 15,153; -0.3 percent Mercer - 3,785; 3, 641; -3.8 percent Putnam - 4,979; 4,757; -4.5 percent Sullivan - 6,714; 6,221; -7.3 percent

mated that fewer farm workers are needed. "It's been going on in Pemiscot County for years," Cartee said of the decline. "At one time we were close to 30,000 people. Now we're at 16,000." Turning around the decline is a tough task, Cartee said. "We're open for suggestions," he said.

The state's biggest gainer was Lincoln County, about 60 miles north of St. Louis. The county saw a 2.8% increase in population to 57,686. Lincoln County Economic Development Director Larry Tucker said the growth is driven by people moving further See Population, Page 4

‘Cruise’ Set For April 27 Classic vehicles will be on display on Saturday, April 27 as the first “cruise” event of the year takes place in Trenton. Organizer Jeremy Soptic said the event will be held in the parking lot of T&L Carquest on Ninth Street. Participants are asked to have their cars in the parking lot by 6 p.m., at which time the public is invited to view the vehicles on display. While there is no organized cruise, Soptic said he encourages participants to take a short drive around town to “show off” their vehicles. In addition to the vehicle viewing, members of the Trenton High School Student Council will be selling 50/50 tickets to help fund attendance at a leadership conference this summer. Cooksey’s Kettle Corn and the Wild Onion will also have food available at the site.

THS Prom Is Saturday “Anchored in Alaska” is the theme for the 2019 Trenton High School Prom, which will be held on Saturday, April 27 in the high school gym. Grand March will be held at 7 p.m., during which time seniors will be introduced and the prom king and queen will be announced. Candidates for king are Jaden Whitney, Max McNabb and Dylan Harris. The queen candidates are Ainsley Tolson, Sidney Lynch and Teresa Burkholder (Yoder). Following Grand March, a dance will be held. Photos will also be taken.

GCNHD BOARD Monthly Meeting

Members Sworn In; Officers Elected New board members were sworn in and officers elected during meetings on April 16 of the Grundy County Nursing Home District Board of Directors and Senior City, Inc. According to information provided by Sunnyview Nursing Home and Apartments Administrator Donita Youtsey, Jim Cox and Jim Bush were sworn in to serve a three-year term on the board. 2019 Communitywide Clean-Up - April 22-27 National Weather Service Mostly sunny skies and mild temperatures are expected this week with highs in the 70s and lows in the mid to upper 40s. No rain is expected until at least Saturday. The high on Thursday, April 18, at Trenton was 60 with .04 of an inch of rain. Friday’s high was 64, Saturday’s high was 76, Sunday’s high was 85 and the overnight low was 53. The high on Sunday at the Government Weather Station near Spickard was 84, the low was 60.
