‘Chalk On The Walk’ Is June 21

FIVE POINTS ALIVE/TDIA

Downtown To Become ‘Art Pallette’ Downtown Trenton will become an art canvas later this month when a “Chalk on the Walk” event is held. Trenton Five Points Alive, a part of Main Street Trenton, is sponsoring the event, which will feature youth, teens and adults creating temporary “masterpieces” using water soluble chalk. The event will be held on Friday, June 21 in the downtown area. The tradition, “Piazza dell’Arte,” goes back to the 16th century Renaissance Italy, when artists began using asphalt as canvas. The tradition fell by the wayside until the 1970s, when it was revived in the small town of Grazie di Curtatone, Italy, which started the first international street painting competition. Trenton’s “Chalk on the Walk” is open to persons age eight years and older as of June 21. There will be three categories of competition, ages 8 to 12 (youth), ages 13-17 (teen) and ages 18 and over (adult), and participants will be working individually. According to Sena Arnold, who is one of the organizers, participants will work in 4-foot by 4-foot spaces that will be blocked

off along Main Street. The chalk to be used will be provided by the event sponsors. Any additional supplies needed are to be provided by the artist. Registration to participate is required. Forms are available at the Trenton Republican-Times, Howard’s Department Store or Vintage Vines and can be returned to either Howard’s or Vintage Vines prior to the event or the form can be brought to the Sesquicentennial Park gazebo, where registration will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. on the day of the event. The form can also be submitted electronically via Messenger on the Trenton Five Points Group Facebook page. Artists will begin their work at 10 a.m. and have until 3 p.m. to complete their entry, with judging to follow. The public is invited to view artists as they work on their entries as well as when the work is completed. Monetary prizes will be awarded in each age category and will be presented at a 3:30 p.m. ceremony. The prizes and chalk are being provided by the Trenton Lions Club, the Trenton Rotary Club, Citizen’s Bank and Trust and Main Street Tren-
