Nursing Home Board To Meet

The Grundy County Nursing Home District Board of Directors will hold its monthly meeting at 4 o’clock tonight (Tuesday) in the conference room of the Sunnyview Nursing Home and Apartments.

The announced agenda includes approval of the conflict of interest resolution, a report on energy improvement projects and the RCF and administrator reports. An executive session for legal matters and personnel is also planned.

Drive-Thru Flu Shot Clinic Set

The Grundy County Health Department is bringing back the drive-thru flu shot clinic for 2018.

The drive-thru format gives the Grundy County Health Department an opportunity to practice its emergency mass dispensing plan.

The drive-thru clinic will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will serve Grundy County residents 18 years of age and older. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It has been five years since we held our drive-thru flu shot clinic,â&#x20AC;? said Kelli Hillerman, RN, BSN, emergency response planner for the Grundy County Health Department. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The event has been very popular in the past, we vaccinated as many as 800 people in just four hours. The drive-thru clinic is an excellent way for us to practice the plans we have to dispense

medication to our whole community in the event of a public health crisis. We hope the public will come out and support the clinic as they have in the past,â&#x20AC;?

The same locations and route will be used: â&#x20AC;˘ The route begins on southbound Princeton Road (access via Oklahoma Avenue). â&#x20AC;˘ The paperwork checkpoint will be at the First Christian Church (1700 Princeton Road). â&#x20AC;˘ Vaccinations will be given at the Grundy County Emergency Services Complex.

Documents for the drive-thru flu clinic will be posted to the Grundy County Health Department website after Thursday, Sept. 20. The web address is www.GrundyCHD.org.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;The clinic runs more quickly and efficiently when the documents are completed in advance but participants do not have to download the documents to participate,â&#x20AC;? Mrs. Hillerman said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have access to a computer, packets will be available at the Grundy County Health Department office prior to Oct. 16.â&#x20AC;?

Additional clinic dates will be announced for children and adults who cannot be present for the drive-thru event.

Volunteers are needed for this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clinic. Persons who would like to assist are asked to contact Abby Oberman at the health department, 359-4196. More information about the event is available from health department administrator Elizabeth Gibson or Mrs. Hillerman.

Flags To Be Displayed At Festival

The Trenton Rotary Club will continue to display flags during the Missouri Day Festival Parade weekend, Oct. 19-21.

The flags - both American and State of Missouri - will be mounted on poles along Main, Ninth and 17th streets as well as a portion of Oklahoma Avenue near the festival entrance. The Missouri Day parade route is the main emphasis of the flag display. The two types of flags will be alternated on the poles and displayed from the Friday morning before the parade (Oct. 19)

until the Sunday evening after the parade (Oct. 21).

Parade officials are encouraging individuals and businesses to be a flag sponsor. Flag sponsorship is for a three-year period at a cost of $50. The names of sponsors will be promoted through the media. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We experienced excellent response to our initial sponsorship

Mostly sunny skies are expected during the first part of the week with highs in the upper 80s and lower 90s and lows in the upper 60s and lower 70s. The high on Thursday at the Government Weather Station at Trenton was 87, the high on Friday and Saturday was 92 and Sundayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s high was 91, the low was 66. There was no report from the Government Weather Station near Spickard.

Cruise Night Changes

Changes have been announced for the Saturday, Oct. 6 car cruise, which has been held throughout the summer on Ninth Street.

According to organizer Jeremy Soptic, the cruise will be moved to downtown Trenton, along Main Street between 12th Street and Five Points. The area will be blocked off to designate a parking area for cars involved in the cruise.

The event begins at 6 p.m. with the Five Points Alive group serving food items from â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Space.â&#x20AC;? The menu will include tenderloins, Frito Dogs, Chicago Dogs, New York Dogs, cole slaw, dessert and brownies. Proceeds from the sale will go toward the groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s efforts to purchase Christmas lights for the downtown area. Treyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Place will also be open and plans to have food specials as well.

Parent-Child Book Club

Trenton Middle School is now offering a parent-child book club to fifth and sixth grade students and their parents.

The book club, which is being sponsored by CFM Insurance, is an opportunity for students and their parents to share thought-provoking books. The books serve as a springboard for discussion, encouraging conversation in the home and around the dinner table. A monthly meeting will be held at the TMS library to celebrate the book and the reading experience. The book club will read six different books and meet six times from October to April.

Informational brochures and registration forms are available in the library. Forms and a $10 registration fee will be due on Friday, Oct. 5 and space is limited. The Administrative and Utility committees of the Trenton City Council have scheduled meetings for tonight (Tuesday) at city hall.

The Administrative Committee will meet at 6 p.m. The only item on the announced agenda is discussion of the old fire ladder truck.

The Utility Committee will meet at 7 p.m. Items on that agenda include a review of a change order for Burns and McDonnell for the headworks project at the wastewater plant and discussion of electric rates.

Trenton Gets Homecoming Win Over PC

Sam Schilling never gave up.

As Putnam County’s Jorge Lopez juked, cut and raced for the east end zone at C.F. Russell Stadium on Friday night, Schilling continued his pursuit.

In the end, he made a touchdown-saving tackle at the fouryard line, halting what had been an 80-yard punt return to that point.

Three plays later, Putnam County put the ball on the turf and Carson Radcliff scooped it up and raced 98 yards for a game-breaking touchdown.

Trenton never looked back from then on, scoring a 35-14 win on homecoming night – win number one on the season.

“I told the kids that’s what happens when you never give up,” Trenton Head Coach Brandon Boswell said. “Like, don’t ever give up and good things will happen.”

For three games the Trenton High School football team wandered in search of something, anything, to put a charge into its 2018 season. For three weeks, Trenton came up empty.

But the Bulldogs never gave up – and on this night, neither did Schilling.

Trenton led just 13-7 when Lopez’s punt return put the Midgets four yards away from tying the game. To that point everything about the game, save for Trenton leading on the scoreboard, was reminiscent of the previous three Friday nights. The Bulldogs had turned the ball over four times in the first half, they had been hit with 50 yards in penalties to that point and, after punting on the first two possessions of the second half, Trenton had yielded a monster return.

the goal line. After stuffing two Putnam County dives into the line, Trenton got its biggest break of the season, maybe a season-altering one, when the Midgets lost the handle on the ball. Radcliff seized the opportunity and no one was going to catch him as he returned the ball 98 yards, flipping the game from a likely tie to a twopossession cushion for the home squad.

“Our defense down on the goal line was just unbelievable,” Boswell said. “That scoop and score – I think 98 yards, it was huge. If we go on and win our next five, you could probably look at that play right there. Sam didn’t give up, then our defense stops them twice and all of a sudden things change.

“I just hope that our kids remember that you can’t give up.

adversity, if you aren’t working hard, then you won’t be able to overcome it.”

Radcliff added a team-high 161 yards rushing and three scores to his defensive touchdown. He had four runs of 28 yards or more in the win. Mark Trump chipped in 103 rushing yards and scored the Bulldogs’ first touchdown of the night. It was a welcome sight, having two backs break the 100-yard barrier after the Bulldogs struggled to get much offense going in the previous three games.

“Coach has told us before, and in (Boswell’s) eyes we are better than this,” Radcliff said.

“If we play like we practice then we can run the table. I think we are unstoppable, but it all starts with our O-line. If our line is getting movement, then it’s our game.”

Putnam County scored the first points of the game, getting

a touchdown on the opening drive. But the Midgets couldn’t capitalize off any of Trenton’s four first half turnovers – an interception, two fumbles and a punt that bounced into a Trenton player.

After Radcliff’s return, everything started turning Trenton’s way. Schilling threw his first touchdown pass of the year, a screen to Jaren Whitney, who raced 62 yards for the score. Brian Ewing blocked a Putnam punt and Radcliff raced 44 yards for a touchdown that put Trenton up 35-7.

Putnam would put the final points on the scoreboard, scoring on a 69-yard run by Torque Brundage. Brundage followed with a 35 yard run on Putnam’s next possession. Both runs came on Trenton’s junior varsity defense and made up almost half of the Midgets’ rushing total. Prior to the final two runs of the game, Putnam

managed just 119 yards rushing on 34 carries.

“The defense did really good,” Boswell said. “I think mentally we still aren’t where we need to be and our tackling was still not very good, so we are going to have to make some changes. But, with that being said, I think you saw how good of athletes these kids actually are. I’ve told them ‘look, I’d rather you be wrong and play fast than be right and play slow’ and I thought our defense was pretty fast tonight.”

Trenton will hope to carry the momentum of the first win of the season over to next week when the Bulldogs travel to Eddie Allen Field in Princeton to take on the Tigers.

Princeton, at 2-2 on the season, is coming off a loss to Milan in week four.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. this Friday.

Tennis Squad Handed 7-2 Road Loss

The Trenton High School tennis team didn’t fare so well on Thursday on the road as the Bulldogs were handed a 7-2 dual loss by the host Kirksville Tigers.

Trenton captured just one victory each in singles and doubles play with the duo of Elle Neal and Latorrie Johnson emerging victorious in doubles play by a score of 8-6 and Lexi Gott picking up an 8-2 singles victory.

Kirksville scored doubles wins of 8-4 over Emma Gilham and Gott and 8-5 over Kendall Crowley and Morgan Dolan to take a 2-1 lead entering singles play. There Kirksville continued to control the dual. Gilham lost 9-7, Neal fell 8-6, Crowley lost 8-3 and Johnson fell 8-2 before Gott scored her victory. The dual closed with an 8-4 loss by Dolan at number six.

Despite the lop-sided score

in the dual, Trenton Coach Tammy Ockenfels saw plenty of positives, especially from her number-one player.

“It was a hard-fought match where the team score doesn’t reflect how well the girls played,” Ockenfels said.

“Emma Gilham played a solid singles match. She attacked the net and had good ball placement. She lost the match, but gained experience in her play.”

JUNIOR VARSITY In junior varsity action, Trenton scored victories in four of nine matches played.

Baley Catron picked up Trenton’s lone singles win with a 6-2 victory. Catron and Trinity Gaunt won 8-1 in doubles play and the duos of Harley Hall and Kaylor Farris and Hall and Leslie Cotiangco each won 8-1 as well to round out Trenton’s four victories.

Also in JV doubles action for Trenton were Gwyneth Foster and Mallory Sole, who lost 8-1; Emilee Lovell and Amanda Parrack, who fell 8-3; and Bailea Jeannoutot and Alaina Overton, who lost 8-0.

In singles play, Foster lost 7-5 and Lovell fell 6-3.

Swalley Wins Power Points

Dean Swalley of Gallatin took home the first local Power Points prize of the year, collecting a week one total of 112 points. Swalley’s total equaled that of Alexis Garnet of Galt, who also had 112 points, but Swalley won the prize on the first tiebreaker.

On the national level, Dorrie Keller of Toms Brook, VA won the grand prize, scoring 119 of the possible 136 points.

Tolson Throws Perfect Game, Trenton Wins 4-0 On Trenton High School pitcher Ainsley Tolsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first pitch of the final inning on Thursday at Griffin Field, her Polo Panther counterpart in the batterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s box unleashed a vicious swing with bad intentions for the Bulldogs.

The result?

A soft liner that floated into Tolsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s waiting glove. As the 19th-straight Polo player to record an out trudged back to the dugout, she could do nothing but stretch her arms out and look at her coach as if to say â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what else I can do.â&#x20AC;?

It was that kind of night for the visiting Panthers. Tolson would retire the next two Polo batters as well, capping a seven-inning perfect game and a 4-0 victory for the Trenton Bulldogs. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She just worked the corners and the change-up worked really well,â&#x20AC;? Trenton Head Coach John Cowling said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All five pitches that we threw, they all worked and the defense was perfect behind her, too.â&#x20AC;?

The defense was what Tolson wanted to talk about after the game as well. Never mind the fact that the Trenton senior struck out over half the batters coming to the plate (she had 11 in the game). In her typical style, she pushed credit elsewhere. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This one was like more of a team game,â&#x20AC;? Tolson said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t feel like I really did that much, honestly, because we had a lot of defensive plays and it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like a crazy amount of strikeouts, really.

We played really good defense together.â&#x20AC;?

Tolson threw 80 pitches in the game with 60 being for strikes.

The perfect game was the second seven-inning perfect game for Tolson, who also yielded no baserunners of any kind against Lexington in a 30 district championshipclinching win in 2016 as a sophomore.

While Tolson was locking up Poloâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s offense, Trentonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s offense was able to break through in two innings to reach the four-run tally that was plenty enough to win on this night.

Tolson drove in Trentonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first run in the third inning, doubling to score Chandler Lynch. Maci Moore followed with a double of her own to trade places with Tolson and put the Bulldogs up 2-0. In the fifth frame, Tolson drove in another run and scored again when Salem Croy followed with an RBI hit.

Trenton put runners on in the second, fourth and sixth innings as well, but couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t pro-

duce any runs. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I knew going in that Polo just wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t giving up very many runs,â&#x20AC;? Cowling said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So we knew we were going to have to get a couple (of runs) early and keep them off the scoreboard. We tried to tell the girls to stay back and be patient, but Poloâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pitcher did a really good job changing speeds on us tonight too and hitting her spots. Our offensive performance tonight was as much about Poloâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pitcher as it was our approach at the plate.â&#x20AC;?

Tolson finished with two hits, two runs, a steal and two RBIs while Chandler Lynch reached base twice, stole two bases and scored twice. Croy and Moore each had one hit and one RBI and Taylor Richman and McKayla Blackburn each had a double with Richman adding a base on balls.

The win was the fifthstraight shutout against Grand River Conference competition for the Bulldogs this year and the 10th straight shutout in a GRC game overall - a streak that dates to August of 2017.

Trenton improved to 9-1 overall and 5-0 in league play on the season.

Trenton was out of conference play on Monday, playing host to the Lawson Cardinals at Griffin Field. The Bulldogs will be on Griffin Field on Tuesday night as well, playing

host to GRC foe Milan in a game slated for a 5:30 p.m. first pitch.

JUNIORâ&#x20AC;&#x2C6;VARSITY Trentonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s junior varsity made its way into the win column with a 9-1 decision. Like the varsity contest, strong pitching led Trenton to victory.

McKayla Blackburn went two innings, striking out every batter she faced, and Jena Reeter finished the game with two innings, giving up one run on one hit while striking out three Panthers of her own.

The Bulldogs had their strongest night of the season offensively, plating two runs in the first, four more in the second and three in the third.

Delaney Franklin led Trenton, going two-for-two with a triple and three RBIs. Chloe Harris was one-for-one with a walk and a run scored and Teya Cooksey also singled and scored a run in a game that saw nine Bulldogs get on base in some capacity. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our pitching and defense were both outstanding tonight and the offense was a bonus,â&#x20AC;?

Garald Wayne Johnson, a 94-year-old Trenton resident, died at 1:45 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2018 at Sunnyview Nursing Home in Trenton.

Graveside services are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018 at the Edinburg IOOF Cemetery in Edinburg.

A family visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the WhitakerEads Funeral Home in Trenton.

Mr. Johnson was born on Dec. 11, 1923 in Suntex, OR, the son of George W. and Iza O. Peterson Johnson. He attended West Plains school and served in the United States Marine Corps during World

War II. He was married on March 4, 1962 in Spickard to Helen Langdon. He worked at Tharp’s Sales and Service and with Ed Endecott Carpentry.

He also farmed at Cainsville and Mt. Moriah.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Helen of the home; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Georgia Kirkland.

Memorial donations are suggested to the Edinburg IOOF Cemetery. They may be left with or mailed to the Whitaker-Eads Funeral Home.

Rebecca Lynn Offield, a 46year-old Kansas City resident, died at 11:40 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018 at the University of Kansas Medical Center after a battle with cancer.

Mrs. Offield was born on Dec. 13, 1971 in Kansas City, KS, the daughter of William and Janice Lawson Rains. She graduated from Washington High School in 1990. She was married on Oct. 12, 2014 in Walnut Shade to Stan Offield. She had been working as an administrative assistant with Cigna for the last five years. She was an avid NASCAR and Dale Earnhardt

Jr. fan and was recently becoming a fan of the Kansas City Royals. She also enjoyed listening to music and going to concerts.

Survivors include her husband of the home; her daughter, Ashley Sanborn and her husband, Korey of Atchison, KS; step-sons, Daniel Offield and his wife, Allison, Steven and his wife, Haley and Matthew Offield, all of Kansas City, two sisters, Pam Wallace and her husband, Jesse of Kansas City, KS and Cindy Brull and her husband, Mark of Shawnee, KS; a brother, Bryan Rains and his wife, Betty of Basehor, KS; and her four-legged family, Elmer, Heidi and Oliver.

Patty S. Sims, a 77-year-old resident of Annawan, IL, died on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018, at her home in Annawan.

17, 2018, at Vandemore Funeral Home and Crematory, Atkinson Chapel in Atkinson, IL. Rev. Terry Lancaster officiated. Burial was at Dayton Corners Cemetery in Colona, IL. Mrs. Sims was born on April 19, 1941 in Trenton, the daughter of Carroll and Irene Wagner Nichols. She was married on May 25, 1960 in Trenton to James E. Sims, who preceded her in death in 1999. She was employed at John Deere Harvester Works for 26 years and retired from the company. She had been attending the Mineral United Methodist Church, and was a member of Annawan/Alba Women’s Club. She was an avid reader and loved spending time with her family and friends. She was a Kansas City Royals fan.

Serve Trenton Is Rotary Topic

The upcoming “Serve Trenton” project was the topic at Thursday’s meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club.

Kasey Bailey, who is one of the organizers, presented information about the event, which this year is being held Sept.

29-30. This is the third year for community volunteers to gather over a two-day period to complete projects that might not otherwise be done without their help. Work in the past has included painting, window replacement, door hanging, sidewalk replacement, yard and brush clean-up, mowing and walking dogs at the animal shelter. Several individuals have also prepared lunches for the workers.

Bailey said that over 150 persons have volunteered in the past either for one day or both days. Each day begins with a gathering at C.F. Russell Stadium that includes music and devotions before volunteers head out to their assigned work sites. As of Thursday, there were 27 projects confirmed, however, Bailey said it

A warrant has been issued for a rural Trenton man in connection with a fire that destroyed a rural home last week.

According to online court records, a warrant has been issued for Stacy Davis, charging him with second degree arson, a class D felony. Davis’ address is listed as 630 S.W. 20th Street, which is the address of the home that was destroyed in a fire on Monday, Sept. 10.

The home was owned by Davis’ mother, Nikki Davis and the Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office had listed the cause as “suspicious.” As of press time, Davis had not been arrested. Bond has been set at $10,000 cash only.

A Trenton man, Justin L. Kleihauer, 22, is facing several felony charges after his arrest on Sept. 15. Kleihauer is charged with two counts of possession of a firearm unlawful for certain persons, both class D felonies, as well as first degree endangering the welfare of a child, a class D felony, and driving while revoked or suspended, a class E felony. He is accused of possessing a Ithaca double barrel 12-gauge shotgun and a Marlin Firearms Glenfield Model 20 .22 caliber bolt action long rifle when he is a convicted felony. In addition, Kleihauer is accused of acting in a manner that created a substantial risk to the life, body and health of a child under the age of 17 by being a known felon in possession of a firearm and possessing a controlled substance. In addition, Kleihauer faces two misdemeanor charges, possession of a defaced firearm, a class B misdemeanor, and possession of 10 grams or less of marijuana., a class D misdemeanor.

A Trenton man, William L. Pouder, Jr., 52, is charged with a class D felony of unlawfully receiving public assistance benefits/EBT card. Pouder is accused of receiving food stamp benefits over $500 by completing, signing and submitting an application and intentionally withholding information about his felony drug conviction to obtain benefits. The period of time listed in the charging information states that he received the benefits From Aug. 2015 to Nov. 2016. Pouder’s bond is set at $7,500 cash only and he is scheduled to be in court Sept.

Butler, a 44-year-old Trenton resident, is being held in the Grundy County Detention Center on bonds totaling $200,000 cash only after failing to obey a judge’s order on original charges of third degree domestic assault, a class D felony, and distribution of a controlled substance, a class B felony. Her probation has been suspended on both charges and she is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 11.

Austin L. Frisbie, a 24-yearold St. Joseph resident, is being held on multiple charges, including first degree assault, a class B felony, and first degree property damage, a class E felony. He is accused of driv-

ing his car at Veronica Vestal multiple times while she was operating her vehicle and hitting the driver’s side, which was a substantial step toward committing the offense of assault. The damage to the vehicle exceeded $750. The incident allegedly occurred on June 19. Frisbie’s bond on this charge is $20,000 cash only and he is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 25. He is also expected to be in court on Sept.

25 on a charge of driving while revoked or suspended, a class A misdemeanor, for which he failed to appear in court. Bond on that charge is $500 cash only. He has also failed to appear in court on a speeding charge, with bond set at $300.

Lewellen, is being held on $15,000 cash only bond after being arrested on a class C felony charge of possession of a controlled substance except 35 grams or less of marijuana/synthetic cannabinoid. Lewellen is accused of possessing methamphetamine, a schedule II controlled substance, on Nov. 7, 2016. He is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 25.

A Bonne Terre woman, 36year-old Emily M. Hendee was arrested by the Crystal City Police Department after failing to appear in court in Grundy County on two class C felony counts of passing bad checks.

Trenton Police Department Sept. 9: officers made an arrest on a warrant at an east business and investigated a report of domestic assault in the east part of town.

Sept. 10: an arrest was made on a warrant in the downtown area and officers investigated a report of passing a school bus in the east part of town. Officers responded to a motor vehicle accident at an east business and were at an east school where a subject failed to yield at a school crosswalk.

A missing person report was investigated at an east business.

Minor Mishap At Intersection

Two drivers escaped injury in an accident at the intersection of Highway 65 and 28th Street on Thursday afternoon,.

According to Trenton Police Officer Jeff Spencer’s accident report, the mishap occurred when a sport utility vehicle driven by Julie J. Peto of Trenton was eastbound on 28th Street. Ms. Peto failed to see a car driven by Stephen J. Beavers of Mercer, which was northbound on Highway 65, and pulled into its path. There was minor damage to the front passenger side of Ms. Peto’s SUV and minor damage to the front driver’s side of the car.

Both vehicles could be driven from the scene.

Wall Street Salaries At Highest Levels Since 2008 ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Salaries on Wall Street rose last year to their highest level since the 2008 financial crisis, according to a report issued Monday by New York state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.

The report puts the average salary in New York City's securities industry in 2017 at $422,500, a 13 percent increase over the year before the highest since 2008.

"Wall Street has profited every year since the end of the recession in 2009, and compensation r e p ub lic a n- t im e s. c om

last year reached its highest point since the financial crisis," said DiNapoli, a Democrat. "The industry is on track for another good year absent a major setback later in the year."

Overall, Wall Street posted $24.5 billion in pre-tax profits in 2017, rising 42 percent from 2016's figures. Profits for the first half of 2018 stand at $13.7 billion, 11 percent higher than the same period last year.

Securities jobs have the highest average pay of any occupation in the city. They account for

21 percent of all private-sector wages in the city but make up less than 5 percent of all privatesector jobs.

DiNapoli's report found that there are now about 120 firms operating broker-dealer operations on the New York Stock Exchange. There were more than 200 before the financial crisis.

Nearly 200,000 people are employed in the securities industry in New York, more than any other state. DiNapoli's report found that the industry continues to be dominated by men, with

men making up more than two-thirds of the total securities industry jobs in the city. Nearly two-thirds of those in the business are white.

Finally, the report found that the industry and its workers paid $14 billion in taxes to state coffers — or nearly 20 percent of all state tax collections last year.

"However you feel about Wall Street, positive or negative, when we have good news on profits, that's certainly a positive," DiNapoli said.

Amazon Launches Small Business Shop NEW YORK (AP) — Amazon wants you to shop small.

The online retailer launched a new section of its site Monday called Amazon Store-

fronts, which only lists products sold by small- and medium-sized businesses in the U.S. The company says smaller

companies can get lost among its millions of goods and it wants a way for shoppers to find them more easily. Amazon says more than 1 million products from about 20,000 businesses were selected to be featured on the site, based on ratings from customers. Similar stores will be launched on Amazon's sites in Germany and the United Kingdom.

The new site is also a way for Amazon to try to boost its image at a time when it's facing scrutiny for its growing power, as well as continued

criticism that it is taking business from small shops. Earlier this year, it released a report that said half of the items purchased on Amazon come from small- and medium-sized businesses. Amazon Storefronts will be promoted on the online retailer's front page, and a TV ad will air this week showing some of its small business sellers.

Still, the new site could help get small brands in front of millions of Amazon customers.

The Little Flower Soap Co., which will be on Storefronts

and featured in the TV ad, says it expects orders to rise since its flavored lip balms and handmade soaps will be a couple of clicks away from Amazon shoppers, instead of several.

Other small businesses on Storefronts include one that sells matching sets of pajamas for families, and another that offers wooden blocks.

Amazon says it isn't charging small businesses to appear on Storefronts, and the company says it plans to add more companies to the site.

PRESCHOOL SPOTLIGHT

Trenton R-9 School District is fortunate to have an outstanding preschool program to provide students with the essential concepts for kindergarten readiness.

The preschool is a free prekindergarten program. It is open to children who are ages three and four by Aug. 1 and reside in the Trenton R-9 School District.

Preschool is a half-day program with children attending five days a week. Children are provided daily snacks and transportation at no cost to the family. We are still accepting new enrollments, so call 660-359-2003 for enrollment information.

According to the kindergarten teachers, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Students that attend Trenton R-9 preschool for two years are more socially and academically prepared for kindergarten.â&#x20AC;? This is due to the dedication of our teachers Jessica Golden, Colbi Kirk, Cara Leininger, Anna Muselman and Emily Voorhies. Allow me to introduce the early childhood teachers at the Trenton R-9 Preschool.

Jessica Golden is a teacher in a four-year-old classroom. This is currently her second year teaching in the district. She and her husband, Jason reside in Trenton with their two children, Chance and Julianne. Outside of work, Ms. Jessica enjoys spending time with family and friends.

Ms. Jessica states, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love work-

ing in a district where we are proud of our faculty, students, and staff. This District strives to provide for, encourage, educate, and love every child that walks through these doors. We promote parent involvement, and encourage parents to interact in many school activities. This district is more than your typical school system, it is a community that truly has your child's best interest at heart. It is important for young children to attend preschool, because it gives them the foundations they need to begin Kindergarten. Not only is your child getting a strong foundation in literacy and math, but an understanding of our school rules and expectations. Being able to give these children a sense of security, and a passion for learning is our main priority."

Colbi Kirk is a three-year-old preschool teacher, currently in her eighth year in the district.

She is a proud THS alum. She and her husband, Jeremy reside in Laredo with their two sons, Ryeland and Mason. Outside of the classroom Ms. Colbi enjoys fishing, boating, camping and anything else outdoors. Ms. Colbi stated â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love working at the Trenton R-9 School District because I am able to contribute back to the same community that raised me as a child. The Missouri General Assembly recently concluded its annual veto session as well as an additional extraordinary session. Ultimately, lawmakers chose not to override any of the governorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vetoes. The Senate confirmed several gubernatorial appointments and the Legislature as a whole approved bills dealing with STEM education and drug treatment courts.

Three gubernatorial appointees were from the 12th Senatorial District: Janet Rogers, Monica Walker and Michael Thompson. Ms. Rogers and Ms. Walker were confirmed to the Child Abuse and Neglect Review Board, while Thompson was reconfirmed to the Coordinating Board for Higher Education. I wish these fine folks the best of luck in serving the great state of Missouri.

The STEM education bill approved by the Legislature will allow high school students to take a computer science course to fulfill part of their graduation ď&#x20AC;&#x20AC; will also allow ď&#x20AC;&#x20AC; ď&#x20AC;&#x20AC; requirements, and for funding to train the instructors who teach these courses. The bill also creates a STEM Career ď&#x20AC;&#x20AC; ď&#x20AC;&#x20AC; ď&#x20AC;&#x20AC;

Awareness Program. I believe, as do many of my colleagues, that STEM is an important part of our stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s future. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vital we adequately prepare our students not just for todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s job market, but for the job market of the future. I believe this bill is a positive step in the right direction.

The General Assembly also voted to expand the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s treatment court system, which helps offenders suffering from addiction become productive members of society. Studies have shown these types of programs lower recidivism rates, thereby saving taxpayer dollars. I support the effort to give these folks the treatment they need to remake their lives for the better.

Dear Annie: I live in a neighborhood with two nonstate-maintained roads. One is a long, straight, steep hill with about 20 residences. My neighbor "Sally" lives in the middle of the hill. She lets her pets roam free in her yard and has toddler grandchildren.

People driving up her hill need to maintain speed to get up. It is hard to go 25 mph where it is steep. Her cat was hit and killed by an unaware driver.

Sally will go into the road to challenge anyone she thinks is going too fast. I have told her the law says her pets should not be loose. My road has three residences, with no kids and no pets running free. We have no trouble with speeders.

Sally bought big road signs for about $80 each that say, "Children and pets. Slow down." She gave me one of these signs and wants me to put it up on our quiet street.

My three neighbors see no reason for us to post a sign. We did not ask for this sign. How do I diplomatically tell Sally that we're not interested and that she should have talked to us before she bought expensive road signs? -- Wants to

Keep the Peace on Our Peaceful Road Dear Wants to Keep the Peace: First, yes, the onus is entirely on your neighbor here.

She shouldn't be letting her pets roam loose beside a country road that many people zoom down, and it doesn't sound like a great place for her toddler grandchildren to be playing, either. You're within your rights to simply tell her you have had no trouble with speeders and don't want to put up the sign.

But I have to ask, Why not just do it? I don't see any downside to urging drivers to be a little more careful. Even if you're taking every possible safety precaution at home, sometimes pets get out the front door. You might end up being glad for the sign.

Dear Annie: I am writing in response to "Mind Your Manners, Please," who wrote about dealing with a screaming child in a public place. She gave some suggestions, and I would like to offer up another suggestion. How about instead of judging and shaming parents presumably trying to do their best, she and others like her

Glaxo gets a shot in the arm GlaxoSmithKlineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new shingles vaccine is racking up sales well beyond expectations.

It couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t come at a better time. The British drugmaker is steadily losing revenue from former top seller Advair, the blockbuster asthma inhaler that brought in $8.7 billion in 2013. Demand for price discounts has already cut that by half, and U.S. competition should intensify soon, likely slashing revenue even more.

Meanwhile, sales are dropping for some other older prescription drugs and GSKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s consumer health products.

Sales of the Shingrix vaccine are soaring, hitting $363 million in

the first half of 2018, because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s far more effective than rival Merckâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s older vaccine, Zostavax, says Damien Conover, director of health care stock research at investment firm Morningstar.

Conover says itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unlikely Shingrix sales will fully offset Advairâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decline, but he expects GSKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s popular HIV medicines and several newer respiratory products including Anoro and Trelegy inhalers to boost revenue over time.

The Missouri Department of Transportation will be conducting road work in northwest Missouri this week.

Work is weather dependent.

Area work includes: Daviess County - Resurfacing will take place throughout the week on Highway 69 from I-35 to Highway 6 and from Route C to Route A (a pilot car will direct traffic through the work zone); shoulder work will take place throughout the week at the Honey Creek Bridge on Highway 13; Route J will be closed throughout the week for culvert replacement from Titan Road to the city limits of Kidder.

Linn County - Bridge maintenance will take place throughout the week on Highway 36 at the Higgins Ditch, west of Laclede (which includes a 14-foot width restriction); pothole patching will take place throughout the week onâ&#x20AC;&#x2C6;Highway 5 from Route O to Highway 36.

Mercer County - Pothole patching will take place throughout the week on Route W.
