October Is Breast Cancer Awareness

Local Women Lending A Helping Hand

by Diane Lowrey R-T Editor “You have breast cancer.” These are words no woman wants to hear but, according to the Center for Disease Control National Program of Cancer Registries, 14 women in Grundy County will receive that news in 2018. Breast cancer is the second leading cancer among women and also the second leading cause of cancer death. Hearing that diagnosis can be scary and a bit overwhelming, with many unanswered questions and thoughts about “what’s next.” Locally, the Grundy County Breast Cancer Support Group is available to help Grundy County women diagnosed with this disease navigate their way through all the questions and uncertainties they are sure to face within

the next several months. The group is made up of local women who are breast cancer survivors - women who have been through the experience of diagnosis and treatment and now want to offer their support to those now in a similar situation. “It started as an idea,” said Ruby Walker who, along with Cindy Jennings, was instrumental in setting up the organization. “Cindy called me while I was going through chemotherapy to give me support and during our conversations, we realized that there was a need in the community for a support group for women like us who are going through breast cancer.” “Any time you hear the word cancer, it’s scary,” Mrs. Jennings said. “And I remember the support I received when I got my diagnosis and

how much it helped having someone who could understand what I was going through. So that’s when we decided to get organized.” The goal of the group is to help patients “maneuver through their difficult journey with resources and information.” In addition to the personal support through talks and visits, Mrs. Walker said the group supplies newly-diagnosed patients with items that they (survivors) have found helpful during their treatments and recovering. The group has put together “comfort and care bags” which contain items such as lip balm, lotions, dry shampoo, heating pads, headbands/turbans, soft booties/socks, back scratchers, books and cold packs/rice bags. As a result, the Grundy County Breast Cancer Support Group has formed a not-for-profit through the Community Foundation of Northwest Missouri, allowing monetary donations to be tax deductible. “We appreciate all the donations See Cancer, Page 7
