Bulldogs’ Top Two Get Wins, But That’s It

Trenton found success with its top two players, Trent Villacampa and Bradyn Sager, but the Bulldogs couldn’t find any wins down the lineup to put them over the top. The Trenton High School boys golf team was in tournament action on Thursday, competing in the Chillicothe Tournament at the Green Hills Golf Course. In a field of 13 schools, Trenton placed eighth, finishing with a team score of 420. “I’m very pleased with the team score today,” Trenton coach Travis Mullenix said. “It’s a lot of fun to see improvement and it’s a lot of fun for the boys to play better golf. As every golfer knows, it’s not always easy and it can be very frustrating.” Trenton got a big boost at the top from Brycin Loyd and Gavin Roeder, both of whom broke 100 individually at the tournament. Loyd led the way with a 96, shooting a 53 on the front nine before carding a 45 on the back. Roeder followed with a 98, getting nine-hole marks of 50 and 46.

runs in the fifth and that was all the Wildcats needed. Brayden Wiggins got the start and was able to throw five frames in the contest. He allowed all four of Milan’s runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four. Otto threw a clean sixth for Trenton and Milan didn’t need to come to the plate in the seventh. Offensively, Otto had two hits in the contest, one a double. Bobby Shreckengaust had a pair of hits as well and Brock’s RBI hit rounded out Trenton’s five-hit day. With the loss, Trenton fell to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in GRC East play. Trenton was back in GRC play on Monday, traveling to take on St. Joseph Christian. The Bulldogs will play a GRC make-up game today (Tuesday), traveling to Maysville to take on the Wolverines. The first pitch is set for 5 p.m.

Chase Otto followed, nearly breaking 100 himself with a score of 102. He used a frontnine 49 and back-nine 53 to reach his total. “Gavin and Brycin were both able to break 100 and that really helped our team score,” Mullenix said. “Chase was really close, too. It’s cool to see them maturing as golfers and gaining a better understanding of everything the game teaches — honesty, integrity and the ability to deal with adversity. I’m very happy with today’s results.” Rounding out the team were Preston Harris and Bo Meeker. Harris carded a 124 with ninehole marks of 63 and 61 to round out Trenton’s team total. Meeker, also in varsity action, finished at 131, carding a 72 on the front nine and a 59 on the back. Trenton played host to Gallatin, Carrollton and Marceline on Monday in the Trenton Quad at the Riverside Country Club. The Bulldogs close the week with back-to-back tournaments, going to the Lawson Tournament on Thursday and the Richmond Tournament on Friday.

AVONDALE, La. (AP) — Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman outlasted Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel to win the Zurich Classic in a playoff that capped a tight and tense final round

Sunday. Smith and Leishman won with a par on their second trip up the par-5 18th after Oosthuizen pushed his tee shot into the water and missed an 11foot par putt.

The Australians forced the playoff by shooting a 2-under 70 in alternate-shot play at the PGA Tour’s lone regular-season team event. Oosthuizen and Schwartzel, a shot ahead entering the day, but the shot a 71. The South Africans had three pars and two bogeys. It’s Smith’s third career victory — second at the Zurich team event — and best result since tying for second at the pandemic-delayed 2020 Masters last November. It’s also was his sixth top 10 since the current tour season started last October. Smith’s last victory came at the 2020 Sony Open in Hawaii. It was Leishman’s sixth career victory, his best result since tying for fifth at the Masters this month and his first win since the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open. They finished regulation at 20 under. Peter Uihlein and Richy Werenski shot a 67, with six birdies and one bogey, to shoot up the leaderboard from 18th to third. Billy Horschel and former LSU player Sam Burns shot a 69 to tie for fourth with Brandt Snedeker-Keith Mitchell and Brendan Steele-Kegan Bradley.

SPORTS 2021 NJCAA DIVISION II NATIONAL TOURNAMENT

Pirates’ Season Ends At National Tournament Second Close Loss Ends Pirates Run At National Tournament 3 11

SOUTH SUBURBAN 85 NORTH CENTRAL 83

Entering the 2021 season there were a lot of question marks for the North Central Missouri College men’s basketball team. On the heels of the most successful season in the program’s history, the Pirates were faced with replacing a lot of firepower. Marty Jackson, perhaps the most impactful player ever to put a Pirate jersey on, headlined the outgoing class. But in recent years, the definition of success within this program had changed and losing a strong sophomore class to graduation wasn’t a reason to scale back expectations for head coach Jeremy Esry and his team. The Pirates’ 2021 season came to a close on Thursday. It would be hard to describe it as anything but a continuation of the success the program has established in the last three years. An 85-83 loss to South Suburban in the consolation bracket of the NJCAA Division II National Tournament ended the Pirates’ run, but not before North Central collected thirdstraight Region 16 and district championships. For the third year in a row, a National Tournament banner will go up on the east wall in the Ketcham Community Center. “This was not the outcome that we wanted or expected in Danville but there are not too many teams in the country who get to end their season on a good note,” Esry said. “This team was a joy to coach every day and was probably the most fun to watch grow that I have been a part of here at NCMC. I’m super proud of how they handled themselves every day in practice and in games and I’m glad that it paid off for them by earning a spot at the national tournament.” The Pirates’ season-ending loss to South Suburban closely resembled

their first-round loss to Iowa Lakes. Once again the Pirates trailed in a close game at halftime — 40-35 — spent the majority of the second half playing from behind, but had a chance to win in the end. As was the case in the opening round loss, turnovers again hampered North Central. The Pirates finished the game with 23 turnovers — 10 more than South Suburban’s total of 13. The Pirates also failed to get their three-point shooting launched again and finished just 3-of-11 from distance. Atavian Butler led North Central in the loss with 18 points, six rebounds and three assists. Jeramy Shaw followed with 16 points and 13 rebounds and Camron Donatlan came off the bench for 16 points. Kolten Griffin had 10 points and six rebounds, Damien Loyd scored nine points and Jackson Andrews had eight. The loss gave the Pirates a final record of 17-8 in a season that featured fewer games and a later start date due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which cancelled the national tournament altogether last year. Photo Courtesy of NJCAA But the Pirates came together under JERAMY SHAW drives past a defender during the Pirates’ 85-83 loss to South Suburban at the NJCAA Dithe circumstances. After opening the vision II National Tournament on Thursday. Shaw had 16 points and 13 rebounds in the Pirates’ seasonseason with two losses in its first ending loss. three games, North Central began to hit its stride. The Pirates were 6-5 before playing their first Region 16 contest, but reeled off 11 wins in their final 12 games before the National Tournament began. In the past three seasons — a span in which North Central has won every region and district title available — the Pirates are 63-25 overall. WOMEN While North Central’s women’s team didn’t make it to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament, it can take some solace in the fact that the team that eliminated them from contention was the best in the nation. Lake Land College, 80-50 winners over the North Central women in the Central A District Tournament championship game, won the Division II National Championship with a 53-49 win over Johnson County in the championship game Saturday. Photo Courtesy of NJCAA CAMRON DONATLAN dribbles through the South Suburban defense during the NJCAA Divsion II National NCMC finished the year with a 17-5 Tournament consolation quarterfinals on Thursday in Danville, IL. cile. Life is too short to allow bitterness to fester and relationships to be destroyed. A bright note is that our son's in-laws treat us with love and respect, and they are thankful that they have us in their lives. -Two Sides to Every Story Dear Two Sides to Every Story: Thank you for this different perspective. Forgiveness is a gift for you to give yourself as well as your daughter-in-law. The problem with her seems to be caused by her issues, not yours. But keep trying. Her parents' kindness is reason for hope. Dear Annie: My brother lives next door to my parents and me and is driving me crazy. He refuses to get vaccinated despite my parents being in their 60s, and we have an immune-compromised family. He lives with a pregnant nurse, and she refuses to wear a mask or get vaccinated. They still come into our home and to small family events, and they don't follow requests to mask up properly or socially distance. They also recently came over to our home and tried to diagnose my nephew with autism. He sees a team of professionals, including doctors,

Dear Annie: My daughter-inlaw could probably have written the letter about the person trying too hard to please their disapproving mother-in-law. The reality is that there are always two sides to every story. Mine is that at some point, I did or said something to hurt my daughter-in-law. But I am not allowed to know what that was. So, any apology seems empty, although I have tried. She now treats our entire family with complete apathy. We try. We send cards and acknowledge birthdays, anniversaries and holidays, despite having received no reciprocation for years. We offer to visit crosscountry but are told it is a bad time. We offer to video chat but are often rejected. Our son does contact us with the grandchildren on occasion. We would love to be a part of our grandkids' lives, but rejection gets harder and harder with time. We are blocked from Facebook posts and are not allowed to know our granddaughter's cell number. It is all very sad indeed. Our daughter-in-law is loved and cared for, but her perception is that she is not. Please encourage others to forgive and recon-

who have all stated that he is not autistic. I tell my parents this is unacceptable behavior that crosses the line. Unfortunately, they do not agree with me, and it's causing conflict. I understand that I cannot control my brother's actions, and I have voiced my concerns about our safety to him directly, but he brushes me off. What else can I do? -- Living Next Door to Peter Pan Dear Living Next Door to Peter Pan: It sounds like your parents side more with your brother, though I'm not sure why they would. Start by ironing out the rules of the house and letting them be known to all, including your parents. If you want guests -- including family -- to wear masks and socially distance, then they must wear masks and socially distance. As far as your brother attempting to diagnose your son, tell him to MYOB and that you are relying on professionals.

Munificent bonds After getting pummeled a year ago on worries about the Investment allocations pandemic, municipal bonds have roared back to life. by mutual fund category These bonds’ prices have been rising with excitement that $12 trillion a healthier economy will mean stronger tax revenue for the $54 billion cities and states that issue them. That optimism has driven a rally even though prices are dropping for U.S. Treasury bonds. The average 10 intermediate-term 1Q 2021 net municipal bond fund investment has returned 0.7% Total assets this year, as of April 20, according to 8 Morningstar. That easily beats the 2.1% loss for the average intermediate-term core bond 6 fund over the same $188 billion time. The strong returns are drawing even more investment, and municipal bond funds drew in $31.8 billion during the first 4 quarter. Strategists at Morgan Stanley say “the best returns are likely in the rear view” for these bonds. But others remain optimistic. Municipal borrowers haven’t flooded the market with new bonds, and state and local governments are also 2 getting $350 billion in direct aid from Congress, strategists at $32 billion BlackRock noted.

Chasing returns: Investors poured more than half as much into muni bond funds last quarter than they did into U.S. stock funds, even though U.S. stock funds are nearly 12 times the size. Source: Morningstar

Top Speller At Rotary Club Trenton Middle School eighth grader Titus Kottwitz presented the program to members of the Trenton Rotary Club at their Thursday, April 22 meeting at the BTC Bank community room. Kim Washburn presided at the meeting, Dan Wilford gave the prayer and Chris Hoffman was the sergeant of arms. Kottwitz recently won the Northwest Missouri Regional Spelling Bee and will participate in the national spelling bee in June. The national bee will be held virtually, with the top 12 finishers qualifying for live competition in Florida. The finals will be televised on ESPN. Kottwitz, who was also the Grundy County champion, said he prepared for the spelling bee by studying a word list provided for the event as well as doing a lot of reading. When spelling a word he is given, he said he tries to determine if he has ever heard the word and, if not, will ask for a definition as well as the word origin. He also asks for the word to be used in a sentence. At the end of the program, Titus competed in a spelling bee round with four

members of the club, winning in the fourth round with the word valiant. E’Lisha Gass, who serves as the TMS spelling bee coordinator, pronounced the words for the club spelling bee. During the business meeting, members were reminded the shoe collection project will continue through the end of April. Phil Hoffman, who will be the program chairman for May, gave the schedule of programs that include a tour of the Trenton R-9 Performing Arts Center on May 6, Crowder Park Superintendent Anna Persell on May 13, Grundy County Health Department Supervisor Elizabeth Gibson on May 20 and Friends of the Thompson House member Gary Dolan on May 27. The club will meet at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 29 at Cross Hall on the NCMC campus. There will be a recognition of Paul Harris recipients as well as a formal presentation of the club’s donation to the Rotary Foundation on behalf of the late Joe Brinser. District Gov. Donald Gladhart will also be in attendance along with other district Rotary officials.
