In mind’s eye

After every holiday season I head to the refrigerator to graze for days upon leftovers. That’s when I notice how all those family photographs we’ve stuck on the fridge door are …well, a bit outdated. This happens every year. We never change them from year to year, this new 2019 included.

Nobody visiting us points this out to us during the holiday hubbub.

Maybe that’s manners. Or maybe it’s just intensity in focus, meaning the predator looking for meat or whatever to eat breezes past whatever’s on the outside to get inside without a glance.

It’s not for any lack of variety.

There’s a construction paper tie from some Father’s Day past, so old that even the grandkids argue over which one of them made it.

There are a few magnetic promotional pieces, at least a couple from those still in business. You can enjoy a calendar picture for its timeless beauty, if you ignore the dates.

Most of the photos plastered on our fridge door are like that.

No, the stuff stuck on the fridge door doesn’t mold like the stuff you keep overlooking does on the inside. But there definitely is an “oldy moldy” flavor to what we display there. My guess is the magnetic football for ol’ Bulldog #6 ranks as the oldest still on display. It’s been more than a decade since the last guy from our household put on his football pads for the Red and Black (it’s a nice big magnet, though – still makes the church newsletter handy to grab).

When our family was young, I was the designated picture taker. I had an excellent Nikon camera and some experience from using it regularly in my newspaper work. I also had one of the earliest video cameras complete with shoulder strap for the heavy 2-piece recorder which linked up to the handheld camera which you balby arryl Wil inson anced on your shoulder while using.

At the time nobody had grown above my 6-1 height advantage so who was going to argue with anything I snapped?

Things change.

Now, at least compared to others, I hardly take pictures anymore despite the convenience of the smart phone in my pocket. It’s the competition of elbowing my way where a picture could take place, even just amongst family members. I’ve learned to just watch whatever’s happening in real time and then ask for a digital copy later, choosing from the best photo taken within our group.

Grandpas like me, slow on the draw using a smart phone, understand. After all, you can send a picture around the world in a fraction of a second. Is there really a reason for 32 of us to stand in the same spot to photograph the candles on the same birthday cake?

I’m not complaining. In fact, when I find myself in a place or experiencing an event that I want to log permanently into my brain, I take a deep breath then do my best to turn on all my senses at once …the old-fashioned way. I concentrate on making a memory.

There’s something to this. A university study once asked half of the study group to take their smart phones to record whatever they liked on a field trip to an art museum. The other half was asked to leave all cameras at home. The next day they got a test which confirmed that the students who took pictures remembered less of what they’d just seen.

One of our state universities conducted a similar experiment when a group of their students visited Europe last summer. Half the travelers were allowed to take their cameras and the rest agreed to do without. When they returned to the U.S. the kids were given a test on what they’d seen. Those without cameras averaged around 60% retention. Those who saw Europe with the iPhone plastered to their face averaged 40%.

Some of the best photos I remember are ones I never took. One is when we crested the ridge to become awestruck by the mass of yellow butterflies fluttering wildly in fading sunlight against a backdrop of the line of trees darkening at dusk. I still feel the heat and humidity of that moment, which only made the fluttering more magical.

Another “photo” in mind’s eye captures the basketball coach of another team at another school at midcourt. He was still on his knees yet to arise from a timeout huddle, black pants in the mire of sweat puddles, smeared with white talcum powder. He was reaching up toward the referee from a rising fog caused by the powder sprayed out as he whipped a towel about. I don’t remember what he was pleading, but I remember how the crowd suddenly got quiet as we all strained to hear. He was begging so earnestly while I sat there, eating popcorn.

I’ve taken thousands of photographs from the sidelines of football games over my years. But nothing is more vivid than during a runaway Homecoming victory when standout RB Vince Rogers toyed with would-be tacklers and, when finally tackled, turned to help one of the crestfallen defenders to his feet. The favorite photo in my mind’s eye wasn’t there but of Coach Danny Brown’s face as he turned away. We must secure the border

We are a nation of immigrants, but our laws -- and our borders -- must be respected. A government that cannot secure its own borders is a government that isn’t doing its job. Whether it’s protecting against national security threats, stemming the flow of illegal drugs, or preventing human trafficking, securing our borders is about keeping Americans safe.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, nearly 17,000 criminals were apprehended at the southern border last year. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) saw a 50% increase in apprehensions of known gang members and a 73% increase in seizures of fentanyl, a powerful opioid that is driving up the number of overdose deaths in this country.

That’s why I fully support

President Trump’s call for stronger physical barriers, which have a proven record of effectiveness, at the border.

After barriers were improved or expanded in the El Paso, Yuma, Tucson, and San Diego CBP sectors, illegal traffic has decreased by at least 90%. With more than 50,000 people crossing the southern border between ports of entry last month, physical barriers, including walls and fencing, should be built or strengthened along every mile where they’re needed. That should be done in conjunction with enhanced security technology and increased personnel.

That’s not just my view. It’s the same position many Senate Democrats have supported in the past. In 2006, more than two dozen Senate Democrats supported the Secure Fence Act, which authorized 700 miles of

At noon today, Jan. 9, the Missouri General Assembly will officially convene for the 2019 legislative session. Over the next four months, senators and representatives will discuss and debate proposed changes to state law.

Many bills have already been pre-filed in advance of the legislative session. These measures deal with a wide variety of topics, including tax reform, property assessment, workforce development, election security, professional registration and more. I look forward to evaluating the merits of each of these proposals when my colleagues and I return to the State Capitol.

During this year’s legislative session, I will have the honor of serving as the chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. One of the General Assembly’s most important functions — in fact, its only constitutionally-mandated duty — is to establish a state operating budget for each fiscal year.

The Appropriations Committee is responsible for developing the Senate’s preliminary budget proposal, which is then sent to the full chamber for further discussion and debate. As chairman, I will do my best to ensure this process runs as effectively as possible.

During the 2019 legislative session, the General Assembly will also have to deal with a few

pressing issues. For one, the governor has requested the legislature make reforms to the state’s inefficient low-income housing tax credit program.

Additionally, statutes relating to the minimum wage might need a few technical updates to align with the newly passed Proposition B, which was approved by voters in November.

These issues and others will be on our to-do list when the Senate gavels into session.

In 2013, Senate Democrat Leader Chuck Schumer put forward a plan that provided $8 billion to repair or reinforce barriers along that 700 mile stretch.

And, just last year, Sen. Schumer offered $25 billion to fully fund the border wall. If Democrats can be for $25 billion in wall funding, why can’t they be for the $5.6 billion President Trump has requested?

For years, I’ve supported commonsense proposals that would help fix our broken immigration system. I believe that any immigration legislation that reaches the president’s desk needs to address border security first and foremost.

Giving Americans the confidence that we’re doing everything necessary to secure the border will help facilitate progress toward addressing other important immigration issues, like meeting the legitimate workforce needs of the country and determining a path forward for people who are currently in the country illegally.

Legal immigration is a fundamental part of who we are as a nation. It is vital for our economy and an asset to our communities. We need an immigration system that works, but we won’t get there unless the government meets its responsibility to secure our borders.

I remain committed to working with the president and my colleagues in Congress to strengthen border security and keep Americans safe.

Roscoe touts this scheme as a great boon to economy. To be effective, experts agree that the wall must extend at least five feet underground and rise to over 20 feet in the air. That would be more material than in all the Giza Pyramids. Think of a one-lane road stretching from New York to Los Angeles -- but going the long way around the earth! But God bless Roscoe, the man will not be discouraged. He’s now taking applications, ordering concrete forms, renting portable toilets, and looking at color swatches. He took a few days off last week to measure the border between Canada and the U.S. in case the idea catches on.

Glore Psychiatric Museum, State Hospital #2 (St. Joseph) seek solutions eventually the dangers associated with its use became so well known that heroin as a prescription drug faded away.

Opiates produce an overwhelming need on the part of the addict to ingest the drug to experience the euphoric high. For any person who might have desired to kick their habit, the pain of withdrawal might well have driven them back to the drug. Controlling these serious withdrawal symptoms would have been the initial goal of the medical staff at the State Hospital when an addicted patient was admitted. Little treatment beyond restraint was available. Later, doctors began to use sedatives to mitigate the withdrawal symptoms.

The mission and the message of the Glore Psychiatric Museum is particularly important now, as the United States struggles with an ongoing epidemic of opioid addiction. (Opioids are synthetic drugs that are not derived from the opium poppy, but whose effects are similar to that of opiates). Since 2008, the number of people who have died due to opioid use has surpassed the number of deaths due to automobile accidents. In 2016 more than 42,000 died of opioid overdoses (as compared with about 40,000 traffic fatalities).

Misguided thinking within the medical community has contributed to our current crisis. Doctors believed that patients should experience no pain whatsoever and prescribed powerful opioids, such as codeine, hydrocodone and oxycodone, and opiates, such as oxycodone and oxycontin to achieve that end. This philosophy toward pain management led to a vast increase in addicted individuals in the U.S. These people have found it necessary to take increasing doses of opioids/opiates in order to achieve the desired euphoria and stave off the punishing withdrawal symptoms. These levels can reach the point where the body’s breathing reflex is suppressed, and the addict dies of asphyxia.

The current opioid crisis in the United States affects all of us and needs attention. As the long-time home of the State Hospital #2 and Glore Psychiatric Museum, St. Joseph is uniquely situated to lead the charge to help understand and tackle this problem. The State Hospital no longer accepts public patients for addiction treatment in St. Joseph; but we do have services that can help, and a community task force has been formed to find solutions.

In 1903, a young woman we’ll call “Mary” was admitted to the State Hospital #2 in St. Joseph.

Hospital staff noted use of cocaine and morphine as the cause for her admittance. She was not alone.

From the 1880s to 1914 there was an increase of white middle-to-upper class opiate-addicted women admitted to the State Hospital for “morphinism.” An autopsy performed when “Mary” died at the State Hospital in 1910 revealed 1,443 objects contained in her stomach. This “stomach contents display” is one of the Glore Psychiatric Museum’s most well-known exhibits.

This year the Glore Psychiatric Museum celebrates its 50th anniversary. The museum’s mission is two-fold: first, to chronicle the history of State Hospital #2 and the care it provided to patients; and second, in so telling, to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and increase understanding and compassion for those who suffer from it.

Since its opening in 1874, many of the patients at the State Hospital suffered from addiction issues. Often those admitted struggled with addiction to opiates such as heroin and morphine. These drugs, derived from the opium poppy, have been around for a long time. The intense feelings of pleasure and well-being brought on by these substances make them particularly addictive.

The staff at State Hospital #2 would have contended primarily with addiction to morphine and heroin. Both drugs were developed in the 19th century. Morphine, developed in 1804, was used heavily by doctors during the Civil War to help combat the pain of battlefield injuries. Thousands of soldiers became addicted after treatment. A German pharmacist invented heroin in 1898. He gave it its name because the volunteer test subjects who took the drug reported that it made them feel “heroic.”

It took some time for doctors to realize the addictive nature of these drugs. Many health elixirs and tonics had heroin as a major ingredient. “Mary” may have even been given heroin as a treatment for morphine addiction at the State Hospital. Wide availability increased the number of addicted individuals. Hospital records reveal that even doctors were admitted who were addicted to these drugs.

The problem became so profound that Congress felt the need to intervene, passing the Harrison Narcotics Act in 1914. This Act mandated doctors’ authorization to obtain heroin. Some unscrupulous physicians continued to prescribe the drug until

David and Deanna McWilliams retired and sold the McWilliams Funeral Homes located at Gallatin and Jamesport.

Women, Infants, Children offers “prescription” for health The Daviess County Health Department was awarded the contract for the Special Supplemental Nutrition program for Women, Infants, and Children also known as WIC. The contract began Oct. 1, 2018 and will run till Sept. 30, 2019. This contract is 100% federally funded. Included in this contract is Special Breastfeeding grant #2 for the amount of $ 1,488, Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Fund #1 for the amount of $5,000, and $26,852 for the remainder of WIC operations, for a total of $33,340 The Health Department’s caseload is 160 clients monthly.

The reimbursement rate is $14 per client.

WIC helps to prevent health problems and improve the health status of participants through good nutrition. The WIC Program supplements the diets of qualified participants with nutritious food items by issuing a food “prescription.”

We occasionally receive inquiries about selling wild-harvested mushrooms. While this is allowed in both Missouri and Kansas, the mushrooms must be inspected by someone who has been trained and certified in mushroom identification. They must take a class specifically targeting the type of mushroom they wish to sell.

For those interested in selling morel mushrooms, a class will be offered on Feb. 1, in Olathe, KS. The class is part of a daylong workshop offered to growers who sell at farmers markets. Attend-

ees of the morel class will receive a certificate to indicate they have received the training. The certificate is good for selling morels in both Missouri and Kansas.

Growers who sell at farmers markets will find a wide variety of topics of interest. The keynote presentation will discuss better ways to make a profit as a farmers market vendor. Scott Thellman of Juniper Hill Farms will give the talk.

A relatively new program has been developed by the USDA to promote shopping at farmers markets among seniors. It is called the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP). Low-income seniors are eligible for benefits, but a farmer must be authorized to accept the payments.

There will also be a session on selling your product to restaurants, grocery stores, schools, etc. Known as farm to institution marketing, this is an excit-

ing way to increase your sales.

Representatives from schools, farmers who sell to institutions, and the University of Missouri will lead this discussion.

C h eryl A . B onderer 1 9 4 7 -2 0 1 9 Cheryl Ann Bonderer, 71, Winston, died Jan. 2, 2019, at her home.

Cheryl was born on Dec. 3, 1947, in Plattsburg to James and Betty (Frost) Walters. They preceded her in death.

Cheryl was a 1965 graduate of Plattsburg High School and earned her bachelor of education from Missouri Western State University.

She taught elementary education for 27 years with the Gallatin School District, before retiring. Cheryl was a member of St. Munchin Catholic Church, Cameron.

On May 31, 1985, Cheryl married Drury Joseph “D.J.” Bonderer, Jr. in Plattsburg. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include four daughters, Lara (Michael) Church, Mindy (Scott) Samele, DeAnn (Mike) Hutson and Lori (Robert) Price; four sons, Ryan (Ania) Taverna, Tom (Monica) Bonderer, Chris (Anita) Bonderer and Drury Joseph III (Denise) Bonderer; sister, Lori Colvin; 22 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial for Cheryl Ann Bonderer was held Jan. 7, 2019, at St. Munchin Catholic Church, Cameron. Arrangements were by PolandThompson Funeral Home, Cameron. Burial was at St. Munchin Catholic Cemetery, Cameron.

James Rollie Cook, 96, Maryville, formerly of Tarkio, passed away Jan. 6, 2019, at Nodaway Nursing Home in Maryville. He was the father of Linda Pankau of Jameson.

He was born Dec. 22, 1922, in rural Rock Port and attended Lone Cedar country school.

Rollie served his country during World War II in multiple European Theatres.

Rollie worked as a farm hand and on a tree trimming crew. After moving to Maryville in 1957, Rollie became the mechanic for the newly named Kansas City Power and Light, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the Assembly of God Church in Tarkio.

Rollie was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn; a son; a granddaughter; and seven siblings.

Survivors, in addition to his daughter Linda Pankau, include four other daughters, two sisters, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and greatgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father Clarence Harding, his mother Georgia Walker Harding, one brother and one sister.

Survivors include his wife Shirley (Whitt) Harding of the home; one son; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren; and one loving uncle Ervin Walker of St. Louis.

Harris upped his season record to 21-0 by recording a 10-6 decision over Hickman’s Sin-

cere Hall-Osbourne to win the 160-pound class. Rains moved to 20-0 on the season in the 220-pound weight class after pinning Conner Fogue of Father Tolton Regional Catholic.

Ross Critten finished second

in the 120-pound class after dropping a hard-fought 6-4 decision to Richmond’s Logan Claypole in their championship match.

Critten won three matches to get to the title bout.

Tom Crouse won by fall over Southern Boone’s David Heyen and by major decision over Lebanon’s Connor Thom to make it to the championship match of the 160-pound weight class, where he lost to Boonville’s Charlie Pumel.

Andon Allen began his day by pinning teammate Brantley Burns, who competed for Gallatin’s jayvee in the 106-pound weight division. Allen fell to Mexico’s Keith Ransom in the semfinal round but came back to pin Marshall’s Dustin Bellamy for third place.

Ayden Wayne finished 2-2 and in fourth place in the 120-pound weight class. He started competition with victories over Hickman’s Ezekiel Adjokatse and Lebanon’s Austin Johnson. A loss to unbeaten Donavan Parn of Brookfield sent him to the third place match. Southern Boone’s Konnor Turner won that match by a 5-0 decision.

Rodell Sperry won four of five

matches in the 138-pound class and brought home a fifth place finish for Gallatin. He captured an 8-2 decision over Lebanon’s Hayden Dearborn to finish the day.

Jacob Maize, wrestling at 145 pounds, and Jagger Gray, wrestling at 152 pounds, each finished sixth for the Bulldogs.

Both won three of five matches on the day.

Reggie Arnold, 113, Justice Fry, 182, and Dyson Fry, 285, also competed for the Bulldog varsity. Draygan Schweizer also competed for Gallatin as a jayvee 145-pounder.

The Bulldogs pushed their season dual record to 9-0 Tuesday night with head-to-head victories over Albany (72-0), Maysville (61-12) and Polo (61-4).

Four Bulldogs reached personal milestones during Tuesday’s matches. Ayden Wayne and Drayton Harris each won their 100th career match. Graydee Rains and Ross Critten reached 150 wins in matches against the Warriors.

GHS boys advance to semifinal; girls fall to Lawson in opener Gallatin teams headed to opposite sides of the brackets after opening round action in the 25th Annual Lawson Invitational Tournament.

The sixth-seeded Lady Bulldogs got off to a quick start but could not finish off host Lawson, falling 43-26 on Monday night.

The fourth-seeded Bulldog boys broke open a close game against Carrollton with a late surge on Tuesday and advanced to the

semifinal round with a 63-53 victory.

The Bulldogs caught fire in the fourth quarter after leading by only one point at the close of both the first half and third quarter. A 24-15 surge carried them into Thursday’s semifinal round where they will face top-seeded Lawson at 8:15 p.m.

Tristen Gibson led all scorers in the game with 28 points. Landon Corwin chipped in 12 points for Gallatin. Aidan Adkison tossed in 8, Dylan Burns added 6 and Riley Holmes contributed 5 for the Bulldogs. Gallatin shooters at the foul line hit 16 of 20 free throw attempts.

The Lady Bulldogs held a 1510 lead over Lawson after one quarter of play but mustered only single digit scoring in each of the final three periods. Gallatin shot just 1-for-9 from the field in the second quarter and scored only 2 points in the third quarter on just 6 shot attempts from the field.

Addison Burns led Gallatin with 7 points. Karley Salmon chipped in 6, Madalyn Shubert added 5 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Caragan Baker and Maddison Michael each contributed 4 points.

The Lady Bulldogs will face seventh-seeded Carrollton tonight (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. for the right to play in Friday’s 5 p.m. consolation final.

Bulldogs sweep Polo in return to GRC action Gallatin’s boys held Polo to 3-for-24 shooting from the field in the first half, including zerofor-13 in the second quarter, on their way to a 43-26 Grand River Conference victory on Friday in Polo.

The Panthers led twice in the opening quarter by a single bucket but Gallatin held an 11-10 advantage at the end of the period. The Bulldogs pulled down 16 defensive rebounds in the first half and held the Panthers to one shot in all but four first half possessions. Polo missed all 13 shots of the second quarter as Gallatin sprinted ahead, 22-10.

as 19 points before the final tally. Dylan Burns hit 8 of 12 shots to finish with a game-high 16 points for the Bulldogs. He also pulled down 7 defensive rebounds. Gallatin native Brice Garnett shot a 5-under par round of 68 on Sunday to move into a tie for 19th place in the Sentry Tournament of Champions, held at Kapalua Plantation Course on Maui.

Garnett began Sunday’s competition in 27th place but moved up on the leader board with three birdies on the front nine holes and two more on the back nine. Garnett’s final total, 286, put him at six-under par for the tournament. American Xander Schauffele shot a 62 on the final day to turn back all challengers and finished with a winning total of 269.

The youth group has a big month coming up in February.

They are planning an overnight lock-in Feb. 1, then on Feb. 10 they will be hosting their annual spaghetti dinner and auction.

This is always a lot of fun so make plans now to attend. The dinner will begin at 11:30 a.m. and the cost is $5 per person. The auction will feature items donated by community businesses as well as many homemade items such as canned goods and desserts. All proceeds from the auction are used to pay for the youth activities throughout the year.

The Ladies Bible Study Group will meet Wednesday at 10 a.m. The youth group will meet at 6:30 p.m. and the Adult Bible Study Group will meet at 7 p.m. Come out and join us as we study God’s word.

Lake Viking Church is located just outside the east entrance to Lake Viking. Sunday School begins at 9 a.m. and worship service begins at 10 a.m.

Jefferson City event offers help for growing fruits & vegetables in winter Learn to grow produce in winter Feb. 11-12 at the Midwest Winter Production Conference at Lincoln University’s Carver Farm in Jefferson City.

Robert Balek, University of Missouri Extension horticulture specialist, and Shon Bishop, Lincoln University farm outreach worker, give the basics of high tunnels. They talk about site selection, equipment, costs and best crops. Patrick Byers, MU Extension horticulture specialist, and David Middleton, LU farm outreach worker, team up to offer maintenance and rehab tips for high tunnels. They also give methods for supplemental heat.

Growers Paul and Sandy Arnold tell how root crops can boost sales by 50% or more. The Arnolds share their post-harvest handling and storage system for alliums, root crops, brassicas, winter squash and greens.

They spell out the conditions that maintain good-quality produce for many months to create a one-stop shop for buyers. In a second session, the Arnolds will show slides of their high tunnel operation in upstate New York.

Matthew Kleinhenz of Ohio State University shares research on high tunnels and microenvironments that affect yield and quality of leafy vegetable crops.

Corn growers meeting Jan. 17 The Missouri Corn Growers and Northwest Corn Growers will host an informational meeting Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Fulkerson Center at Missouri Western State College. Teenagers injured Two Gilman City teenagers received minor injuries in an accident that happened at about 1:32 p.m. on Jan. 4 in Harrison County.

According to a report by the highway patrol, the crash occurred as Whitney Wooden, 17, was westbound on Route H driving a 2001 Nissan Sentra.

About six miles west of Gilman City, she traveled off the north side of Route H and overcorrected, causing the vehicle to travel over the westbound lane and cross the center line.

The vehicle then traveled off the north side of Route H again, struck the embankment and overturned.

The vehicle came to rest on its passenger side facing southeast.

Whitney and an occupant, Chloe Wooden, 15, were transported to Harrison County Community Hospital by Noel T. Adams Ambulance.

They were both wearing seat belts.

The Nissan was totaled.

The accident was investigated

by Tpr. Q.R. McConkey assisted by the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department.

William “Bill” Allen Wolfe, 66, Cameron, died on Jan. 5, 2019 at his home.

Bill was born on Sept. 6, 1952, in Altamont to Stanley and Catherine (Schoonover) Wolfe. They preceded him in death.

Bill was a 1970 graduate of Cameron High School and a 1974 graduate of the University of Missouri.

He was active in Young Farmers, FFA and 4-H. Bill was an active farmer in Keystone Community.

On June 19, 1981, Bill married Glenda (Bohannon) Wolfe in Cameron.

Survivors include his wife, Glenda of the home; two sons, Chris (Apryl) Denny, Tampa, FL, and Scott (Megan) Wolfe, Cameron; two daughters, Lisa (Jeff) O’Bannon, Hallsville, and Mary (Tyler) Gray, Liberty; twin brother, Bob (Debbie) Wolfe, Cosby; brother, Stan (Kelly) Wolfe, Cameron; sister, Janice (Mark) Clark, Davenport, IA; and seven grandchildren.

Missouri has reasons to hope heading into SEC play b y B enj a min H errol d As the calendar hits January and Southeastern Conference fans’ beloved college football comes to the end of another season, fans across the league turn their attention to SEC basketball play, which begins in full force this week.

Last year, I attended the entire SEC basketball tournament in St. Louis. It was a lot of fun, wall-to-wall basketball and something of a family reunion for the schools in the conference. It was also in a small way monotonous, just game after game washing over you, four games some days, with most teams fairly even. This led to a lot of exciting, close games, but also made it hard for many teams to stand out.

SEC basketball again has a fairly large middle class, with almost every team capable of beating the other squads. Missouri (9-3 through Sunday) starts the 18-game conference schedule in that sizable middle tier, but they have two months to show they belong in the conference’s upper tier.

For now, Tennessee, Auburn and Kentucky seem to be

the residents of that top SEC basketball tier. The Volunteers have an experienced squad with plenty of ability, probably the most steady, reliable team in the conference. Auburn also returned plenty of key contributors from last year’s 26-win team, and Bruce Pearl’s Tigers play their typical up-tempo style with plenty of threes. Kentucky then brings their usual mix of youth and high levels of talent, and they did notch some nice nonconference wins over North Carolina and Louisville before losing their conference opener against Alabama.

Mississippi State and Florida look to be in the next tier, a step behind the top group for now but likely to outperform most SEC teams.

Then comes that big middle pack, Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama, LSU, Missouri, Vanderbilt and Texas A&M, which may actually be a tick below the others. This should be an interesting group, both because they can pull upsets over the top teams, yet also lose to any team as well.

Also, one or two of these teams will probably play better than expected in SEC play and make

a run at the NCAA Tournament.

Tiger fans hope Missouri is one of those teams.

South Carolina and Georgia look to be lower-tier SEC teams, although South Carolina did start conference play with a fairly surprising win at Florida, proof that this pecking order can, and probably will, change a lot between now and March Madness.

Missouri fans have reason to hope heading into conference play. Coach Cuonzo Martin has shown the ability to overcome challenges in his short tenure at Missouri. Last year, when highly touted freshman Michael Porter Jr. missed almost all of the season with a back injury, Martin helped hold the team together and guided them to the NCAA Tournament. This year, Missouri lost a lot of its scoring from last season, and they lost Jontay Porter to a knee injury before the season. There have been some bumps, but a six-game winning streak since early December and gradual improvement have given some cause for optimism heading into the the challenge of conference play.

Winston extends Superintendent Robinson’s contract The Winston Board of Education extended Superintendent Brian Robinson’s contract one year through the 2021-2022 school year, thus maintaining the current three-year contract that is in place. The decision was made during an executive session of the board’s meeting held Dec. 17.

Nicholas Steele was employed as a paraprofessional and Madison Rounkles as the girls’ varsity assistant basketball coach.

The board approved the District Early Separation Incentive and accepted the resignation of kindergarten teacher Hillari

Taylor; she will be moving out of state at the end of the school year.

The 2017-2018 audit report has been submitted to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Guidance counselor Brenda Pliley presented the school board MAP and EOC testing updates. Achievement testing data has been delayed significantly and only partially released by the Missouri Department of Education this year. As reports are released during the second semester, student data will be evaluated.

The school board was pre-

sented employee health insurance renewals that are increasing 14% this next year. After reviewing different options, the staff Salary and Welfare Committee recommended to the board that the district stay with Blue Shield Blue Cross of Kansas City for employee health insurance.

The board was informed that the City of Winston denied the school’s request to make the road in front of the school limited parking only during the school day.

Makeup days for the days missed because of bad weather are May 20 and May 21.

FEC sponsors 56th Contest D ec. 3 1 , 2 0 0 8 Notice has been received from the Department of Natural Resources, State Historical Preservation Office, of a $100,000 grant awarded to Daviess County for an upgrade of the electrical system in the courthouse. The upgrade will completely rewire the courthouse.

An early morning fire on Dec. 29 destroyed the home occupied by Larrie and Lita Terry, located south of Gilman City on Cedar Avenue. Family members said the electrical fire started about 4:15 a.m. when everyone was asleep.

D ec. 3 0 , 1 9 9 8 Dennis and Kim Brammer, 402 E. Burns, were winners of the annual Christmas Lighting Contest in Gallatin. Second place went to Lloyd and Leila Rose Hartpence, 601 W. Willow.

Aaron Steigerwalt, son of Dennis and Sharon Steigerwalt, graduated from the University of Missouri-Rolla on Dec. 19. Aaron graduated with departmental honors as a member of Sigma Gamma Epsilon. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Geological Engineering.

D ec. 2 8 , 1 9 8 8 The body of a possible murder victim was discovered Friday in a shallow grave near Winston.

According to authorities, two quail hunters discovered the decomposed body about 4:30 p.m., Dec. 23, while hunting on a farm three and one-half miles south and one mile west of Winston. Results of an autopsy performed in Kansas City show the victim was a white female, between 5’3” and 5’5” tall and weighed approximately 120 pounds. She was between 20 and 40 years old.

Conservation Agent Vaughn Walters reports that a Golden Eagle was killed about dusk Thursday night southwest of Landmark Manufacturing when the bird failed to escape from the path of an oncoming vehicle.

Lynch’s Super Market north of the square in Gallatin will be the new location for the Sears Catalog Store, with office space for two other businesses.

The Jameson Huskies finished a perfect first half of the basketball season by defeating Gallatin, 85-70, Friday night for their 13th consecutive win.

Gallatin’s Mike Shuler scored 22 points, nearly offsetting Frank Wheeler’s 25 points for Jameson.

D ec. 2 6 , 1 9 6 8 Daviess County was blanketed with a sheet of ice Sunday, the result of a steady drizzle and rain that fell Saturday and Saturday night. The inclement weather caused cancellation of Santa’s Saturday visit via helicopter.

Despite steady increases in the cost of living, Daviess County residents on the average have shown more than sufficient increases in their personal incomes. According to the latest figures, average net incomes have risen from $4,304 per household to $5,594.

D ec. 2 5 , 1 9 5 8 The Christmas Cantata, presented in cooperation with the Ministerial Alliance by members of four Gallatin church choirs, drew over 600 persons at the Methodist Church Sunday evening. D ec. 3 0 , 1 9 4 8 More than 1,000 treats were given out to children in Gallatin Dec. 22 when Santa Claus made a stop here. The gifts were distributed in the lobby of the courthouse from Santa, portrayed by A.F. Seiler.

Lafayette High of St. Joseph ousted the Gallatin Bulldogs Tuesday night in the first round of the Christian Brothers cage tourney, 44-23. Larry Potts, Gallatin star, matched three Lafayette players for high scoring honors with 10 points.

Sophomores and juniors from area high schools have the opportunity to win all-expensepaid trips this summer.

Members of the junior class will be competing to win one of two trips to Washington D.C. Three sophomores will win trips to the Cooperative Youth Conference and Leadership Experience (C.Y.C.L.E.) in Jefferson City. Youth Tour will be held June 14-20, while the C.Y.C.L.E. program will be July 17-19.

The essay contest is open to all sophomores and juniors attending a high school located within the service area of Farmers’ Electric Cooperative (located within Caldwell, Carroll, Chariton, Clinton, Daviess, Dekalb, Livingston, Linn or Ray County). You do not have to be a member of the Cooperative in order to participate. Children of co-op employees and directors are not eligible to participate in the contest.

Sophomore and junior class English and history instructors

received essay contest guidelines and entry forms in the mail in November. Essay information may also be picked up at the business office at 201 W. Business Highway 36 in Chillicothe or by going online to the cooperative’s website at www. fec-co.com.

The essay topic for sophomores and juniors this year is: “Imagine you traveled back in time, back when electricity was not an option. Knowing all the electrical advancements and technology you utilize today, what would you miss the most and why?”

The essay contest deadline is Friday, Jan. 18, at 4:30 p.m.

If mailed, the essay, which may range between 250-600 words in length, must be postmarked on or before the deadline. Winners of the essay contests will be notified in March. If there are any questions pertaining to the contest, please call Megan Meyers at 660-646-4281, ext. 112.

2-headed Ratsnake embryo inside the egg does not fully divide into identical twins and, thus, the twins are joined,” said MDC State Herpetologist Jeff Briggler. “In over 17 years in Missouri, I have seen four two-headed snakes and two twoheaded turtles.”

A two-headed western ratsnake that was found in 2005 is currently on display at the Missouri Department of Conservation’s Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center in southeast Missouri.

Briggler said that a two-headed snake would have a decreased chance of surviving in the wild for a variety of reasons. It would be extremely vulnerable to predation because it wouldn’t have the ability to escape down the normal holes and crevices that one-headed snakes can fit into.

Also, foraging and feeding could be difficult due to two heads acting independently of each other.

However, in a captive situation where it’s able to be cared for and observed, this snake can

provide valuable insight about this unique condition. Besides the research value, visitors have a chance to see a very unique snake.

“We welcome everyone to come to the Shepherd of the Hills Hatchery Conservation Center to see and photograph the snake,” Miller said. “It goes without saying that you’ll rarely ever see anything like this. People are also welcome to make their own guesses as to whether the snake is male or female.”

Read, exercise, dance…even explore outer space at Daviess County Library Adult Winter Reading programming gets underway with Christie Froman’s book review of Headstrong by Dave Asprey. The book review is over lunch this Wednesday. An in-depth Core Conditioning seminar is Saturday at 10 a.m.

The library is offering a new program, Musictime@thelibrary, beginning Jan 18, from 10-10:30 a.m. for walking babies through pre-school aged children and their parents. The program will take place the third Friday of the month now through April.

This is a 30-minute creative movement/music time when a child and a parent can dance, play, and keep a rhythm together using rhythm sticks, multi colored scarves, maraca eggs and sing along songs. It is taught by Mariah Demke.

Staff librarians will read at the end of each session to further encourage the connection between rhythm and phonological and print awareness-fundamental skills for growing successful readers. Share Mariah’s fun curriculum that involves both parent and child in becoming familiar with keeping a rhythm and developing motor skills in a fun musical way.

Mariah grew up in Gallatin, graduated from The Stage Crew Performing Arts Center with training in ballet, jazz, tap and clogging, and is currently teaching dance and creative movement at Midwest Dance Synergy School of Dance in Trenton.

Finally, Kathy Hensley, of Hearts & Hands Reflexology will be at Daviess County Library Jan. 19, beginning at 10 a.m.

Come and learn a little bit of the history of the ancient practice of reflexology and many of its health benefits.

Kathy will also include an active demonstration.

Kathy established Hearts & Hands Reflexology in August 2017; it is currently a strictly mobile service. Her clients en-

joy this therapy in the comfort of their own homes. Home treatment is especially helpful for those who struggle with mobility and transportation issues.

After a long career in healthcare, and going through some serious health challenges of her own, Kathy was introduced to reflexology. She was amazed at how quickly her health improved and from there, developed a strong desire to work with other people. During her work, Kathy stumbled upon foot zone therapy, which incorporates reflexology, and also teaches one how to replace negative thought patterns with positive ones.

“I have seen some pretty amazing outcomes with this approach. While reflexology is not a cure, it is an amazing way to alleviate many symptoms of a vast array of common ailments,” states Ms. Hensley.

Currently, Kathy is studying at International Association of Trauma Recovery Coaches to become a certified Trauma

Recovery Coach, working with clients who have suffered emotional trauma and assisting them overcoming its effects, such as complex post traumatic stress disorder. This program is a part of Adult Winter Reading programming.

All of these events may be combined with an enjoyable, educational visit to EXPLORE SPACE: A Cosmic Journey, a traveling exhibition for libraries, and part of the STAR Library Education Network (STAR_Net) led by the National Center for Interactive Learning at the Space Science Institute.

Exhibit partners include the American Library Association, the Lunar and Planetary Institute, and Afterschool Alliance.

Explore Space is supported through a grant from the National Science Foundation.
