New faces, same commitment to service at Stith Funeral Home McWilliams Family Funeral Home in Gallatin, owned by David and Deanna McWilliams for the past 19 years, was recently sold to a Polo couple. Kyle and Erin Stith purchased the funeral homes, located at Gallatin and Jamesport, and officially took over the reins on Jan. 1, 2019. “We are grateful to David and Deanna for making the transition a smooth one,” says Kyle. “They opened up the funeral home to us before they left so that we could meet everyone.” Both Kyle and Erin have family connections to the area. Kyle was born in Lathrop and grew up on a farm outside of Polo. He is a 2009 graduate of Polo High School. He worked for Bailey & Cox Family Funeral Service prior

Tech-savvy kids tumbling into county library for e-cards The Daviess County Library has such a high volume for users of TumbleBooks, that the state library has asked what the staff is doing to get such high numbers. “Our success with TumbleBooks is directly related to the issue of e-cards to students in the county,” says Library Director Elizabeth Plotner. “Former director, Jan Johnson, initiated this program, working with Superintendent Dr. Bryan Copple and the Gallatin schools (elementary, middle and high) as our first attempt.” TumbleBook Library is an online database of children’s ebooks. The storybook collection includes favorite authors, classic fairytales as well as best selling titles. TumbleBooks are presented as animated, talking picture

books, read-along chapter books, national geographic videos, nonfiction books, and playlists, as well as books in Spanish and French. School librarians coordinate with the cataloguer in the library to secure parental permission slips and issue card numbers. These cards are only viable for electronic materials, such as e-books, e-audio books, TumbleBooks, Pronunciator (another great tool), OverDrive, Libby, and Axis360. The card numbers allow students to utilize their Chromebooks to access these databases, programs and materials. “Teachers understand how attractive the digital world is to their students and incorporate or suggest use of our materials (continued on page 3)

How long will this snowman reign? This colorful snowman towers above the summit of a huge snow pile pushed by street crews onto the southwest corner of the courthouse square. Jesse and Malakai Gray took advantage of the opportunity, not only creating the snow statue but adding spray paint for a little “extra” eye candy. With temperatures expected to plunge later this week, nobody knows just how long the snowman will last before melting away.
