Ashcroft awards technology mini-grant to Daviess County Library for $9,200 Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft announced that Daviess County Library received a Technology Mini-Grant of $9,238. “Libraries offer numerous vital services to their patrons,” Ashcroft said. “In addition to offering a wealth of information, they also provide key business and workforce development services. These grants ensure our libraries have the technology they need to continue offering these invaluable services.” The library will use the grant to replace five tablets, two desktop computers, two laptop computers, and eight headsets that are outdated and no longer supported by the vendor. Additionally, the library will add one desktop computer, 12 laptop computers. and 12 headsets to
better meet patron and staff expectations. Technology Mini-Grants provide funding for eligible libraries to replace older equipment or purchase new equipment to improve library services. This equipment includes technologyand automation-related equipment, hardware and software, which are used to improve the library’s network infrastructure. The Missouri State Library has approved a total of 106 grant applications for the 2020 fiscal year, totaling $781,441 in federal awards that the secretary’s office has distributed to libraries throughout Missouri. The grants are funded by the Library Services and Technology Act through the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Gallatin man flees, in custody now on sex misconduct charges Vernon James Hawks, 51, Gallatin has been taken into custody on charges of child molestation first degree, two counts of sexual misconduct involving a child under 15 second/subsequent offense, and failure to register as sex offender. The charges were filed on Feb. 26 in Daviess County. A forensic interview was conducted with a 12-year-old juvenile at the North Central Missouri Children’s Advocacy Center in Trenton on Feb. 3, according to court documents. The juvenile described three separate incidents with Hawks. Hawks cut off his GPS monitoring device on Jan. 28 and fled the state after learning that law enforcement had been informed. He placed the GPS James Hawks device in the spare tire carrier of a semi. Hawks was taken into custody in the State of California and is currently in the Colorado Department of Corrections. He was convicted of sexual abuse in the first degree in Missouri in 1988. He was convicted of sexual assault of a child under age 15 in Colorado in 1999. Hawks’ probation has been terminated in the state of Missouri and transferred back to Colorado where the board of probation and parole issued a warrant.

More races develop with new filings Additional candidates have filed for office since last week’s report. The primary election is set for Aug. 4, and the general election will be on Nov. 3. Joshua Ty Lisle of Jamesport has filed as a Republican candidate for Daviess County assessor, which sets up a race in the primary between Lisle and Aaron Piburn of Winston, who filed last week. Active Aging Resource Center joins month-long March for Meals celebration with communities nationwide The Active Aging Resource Center announced recently that it will be participating in the 18th annual March for Meals – a month-long, nationwide celebration of Meal on Wheels and our senior neighbors who rely on the vital service to remain healthy and independent at home. The Active Aging Resource Center’s celebration will include various activities throughout the month of March, including a community dinner sponsored by the Tri-County FCCLA, sponsorship of meals by Meal Champions, a contest for donations among TriCounty elementary classes, and change collection cans around the county. “The services we provide are a lifeline for seniors in Daviess County,” said Deanna Lewis, Administrator of the Active Aging Resource Center. “Together, we can keep our senior neighbors well-nourished, feeling safer, and more connected to our community as they age. Our mission is to help keep our Daviess County older adults living healthy, independent lives in their own homes and community.”
