Last Friday and Saturday were very good days for Gallatin, Pattonsburg and Winston athletes, based upon the fact that all 13 who competed in the MSHSAA Class 1 Track and Field Championships came home with at least one medal. Leading the podium review for local athletes was Panther sophomore Cameron Jones, who earned medals in four individual events, the triple jump (1st/43’8.75”), long jump (3rd/21’6.5”), 100 (4th/11.55) and 200 (4th/23.14) meter sprints. Jones also won the triple jump event a year ago. Panther teammate Trevor Ireland placed third in the 110 meter high hurdles (15.74) and eighth in the 300 meter hurdles (45.42) to combine with Jones for a second place tie in Class 1 boys’ team standings with Mound City. Rich Hill won the boys’ competition with 47 points. Claire Hemry’s lone representation for Gallatin’s girls equaled 12 points and a 20th place team finish. Hemry broke her own record in
The Fourth Annual Kids Fishing Derby will be held Saturday, June 1, at the pond located on the west side of The Baptist Home in Chillicothe. The Baptist Home is located just north of the Green Hills Golf Course on US Highway 65. The event is co-sponsored by the North Missouri Sportsman’s Alliance (NMSA) and the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). The fishing derby will run from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. “Every youngster 15 years of age and under will receive a free fishing lure when they register,” said Steve Shoot, NMSA president. “Only those youngsters participating in the fishing derby will receive the free lure, plus more prizes will be given away from the names of those who registered, at the end of the event.” Shoot emphasized the Kids Fishing Derby is a non-competitive event and only children will be allowed to fish. “Adults are allowed to help the kids cast and, if needed, provide minimal assistance when a fish is being brought to shore,” Shoot said. MDC personnel have already been at the pond, adding a number of fish to the structure to hopefully increase the chances of success for each child taking part in the event, Shoot said. MDC personnel will also be on hand

Volunteer opportunities for teens at library Did you know there are some great volunteer opportunities at the Daviess County Library this summer for teens? We have a full and fun schedule planned for Summer Reading Program “A Universe of Stories” and teen volunteers make that possible. This year there is programming on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. If you live in Pattonsburg, Winston, Jameson or Jamesport, we’ll be visiting your town on Wednesdays and can use help, boots on the ground! Or, if you don’t particularly want to work with the children, there is also prep-work and read-

ing rack rotations to be done throughout the year. Volunteer benefits go both ways. The library gets great help for the summer and teens get some volunteer hours to put on scholarship applications, college entrance applications and job applications. Many student organizations like National Honor Society, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts require service hours. Students throughout Daviess County, eighth grade and above, are welcome to apply. If you are interested in helping out this summer, stop by the library and fill out an application. Then get ready to have some fun! For Awards Night list,
