Victim of assault is left in roadway Two 20-year-old men are in custody for the assault and kidnapping of a confidential victim on June 8. Connor Monteer, Jamesport, and Caleb Kettner, Belton, were arrested June 9 and have each been charged with assault first degree, B felony, and kidnapping second degree, D felony. The assault occurred around 7:30 p.m. on June 8 near 320th Street and Major Avenue, Jamesport.

According to the probable cause statement prepared by Deputy Kyle Cornett, Kettner was concealed in the rear portion of a vehicle and his presence was unknown to the victim. Monteer was the driver of the vehicle. Kettner choked the victim from the back of the vehicle to the point where the victim lost consciousness. Monteer repeatedly struck the victim in the head and face area. The victim regained con-

sciousness as Kettner and Monteer dragged him from the vehicle. The two men continued to assault the victim until he lost consciousness again, and then they left him lying in the road. The victim was later transported to the hospital and admitted for injuries sustained during the incident. Monteer and Kettner are being held on $50,000 bond, cash only. They are being held in the Daviess-DeKalb Regional Jail.

personal$65,000, anguish. See page 3 Benefit auction describes raiseshisover including $21,000 to Backpack Buddies by Troy Lesan, Lake Viking

Over the years the Mary Immaculate Catholic Church Auction has evolved into a semi-annual event of extraordinary significance. Thanks to the exhaustive efforts of many volunteers, the auction held June 8 at the Lake Viking Clubhouse builds on the tradition. Over 400 people attended. In 2017 over $50,000 was raised. But even as organizers are still counting proceeds, this year’s total revenue could exceed $65,000 -- a 30% increase over the record setting total of two years ago. One reason for this growing success was “Fund-a-Need” where any and all bids from the floor went directly to the Backpack Buddy program. In 2017 over $13,000 was raised for that category; this year that portion of the auction generated $21,000. The remainder of funds raised by the Mary Immaculate Auction will finance physical improvements to church property. This year’s donated money will be spent on a prayer garden and improvements to make the church more handicapped accessible. Some of the donated items for the silent and live auctions included rare sippin’ bourbon, Diamond Club seating at a KC Royals game, motor scooters, a Good One smoker, tickets to a USC Notre Dame football game, slabs of ribs, puppies, and so much more. The highlight of the evening is the live auction. That’s when auctioneer Mark Leggett takes over and works his magic.

Nominations to open soon for farmers’ 2019 FSA County Committee election

Michelle and Kevin Noel has a special place in Kevin and Michelle’s hearts. John and Marge are the parents of the business founder and owner, Michelle Noel. Her parents enjoyed refurbishing antique items, served as stewards in the community and were local business owners. So in their honor, John and Marge’s Attic was born. Michelle retired from employment in Kansas City. Both Kevin and Michelle will continue working in the family businesses while they also work at John and

Marge’s Attic. They wish to honor the family business which has been in the area for 80 years. “Our family business serves to glorify the Lord every day through its relationship with its customers, community and each other,” Kevin says. John and Marge’s Attic plans to hold a grand opening soon. The store is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The building formerly housed Noels’ Nursery. The family also plans to reopen the greenhouse.

The Farm Service Agency is unique in the fact that it runs on a farmer-elected county committee system. County committees are made up of farmers and ranchers elected by other producers in their communities to guide the delivery of farm programs at the local level. Committee members play a critical role in the day-to-day operations of FSA. Committees meet once a month or as needed to make important decisions on disaster and conservation programs, emergency programs, commodity price support loan programs, county office employment and other agricultural issues. Members serve three-year terms.

Fire destroys machinery barn at Honey Creek Ranch

Gallatin Fire Protection District was dispatched to Honey Creek Ranch on Ridge Avenue for a shed fire at 7:25 p.m. June 5. Engine 101 and Tanker 103 responded with seven personnel. While responding, firefighters could see a thick column of black smoke in the vicinity.

Upon arrival firefighters found a 130x140 foot metal outbuilding fully involved with flames 30 feet high. Fire crews deployed two 1¾-inch attack hose lines for extinguishment. Mutual aid tankers were requested from Jameson Fire District, KAW Fire District, Lake Viking Fire, and Jamesport Fire Dis-

trict. A water shuttle operation was utilized to control the massive fire. Daviess County EMS and Daviess County Sheriff Deputies also responded. The building, owned by Steve McBee, was used to store farm machinery and equipment. It was completely destroyed and may have been started by lightning.

In 2019, LAA-2 (Local Administrative Area-Two) is up for election in Daviess County, which consists of Grand River, Union, Jackson, Monroe and Harrison townships. If you know someone who would be a good county committee member, the nomination period will run from June 14 through Aug. 1. The nominee must reside in one of those townships and participate in at least one FSA program. Larry Belshe currently represents this area of the county. All nomination forms for the 2019 election must be postmarked or received in the service center by Aug. 1, 2019. For more information on FSA county committee elections and appointments, refer to the FSA fact sheet: Eligibility to Vote and Hold Office as a COC Member available online at: www.fsa.usda.gov/ elections. USDA reopens Continuous CRP Signup The Farm Service Agency (FSA) will accept applications beginning June 3, 2019, for certain practices under the continuous Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) signup and will offer extensions for expiring CRP contracts. The 2018 Farm Bill reauthorized CRP, one of the country’s largest conservation programs. This year’s signup will include such continuous practices as grassed waterways, filter strips, riparian buffers, wetland restoration and others. There are typically no entire field enrollments eligible under a continuous signup. These practices are designed for environmentally sensitive ground and target specific conservation goals. For ground to be enrolled in CRP it must have been planted to an annual crop for 4 out of 6 years between 2012 and 2017 and must be owned for one year prior to being offered into the program.
