City hears plans for Chautauqua, new Gallatin police car on its way

Kate Chrisman provided the Gallatin Board of Aldermen a schedule for the 2018 Chautauqua during their July 23 meeting. This year’s Chautauqua is set for Sept. 14-15. Gallatin’s modern Chautauqua will observe its 33rd consecutive year. Scheduled events include a car show, “ugly truck” parade, garden tractor pull, tractor pull, 5K Fun Run, baby show, kids games, and vendors. Check the website at friendsofgallatin. org for updates. An ordinance passed authorizing the mayor to enter into a contract for services with Da-
viess County Arts Council. Police Chief Mark Richards submitted a report on activity for July 23: one dog at large; one nuisance; one litter, pollution; one theft, automobile; one fraud; one vandalism; two miscellaneous; one welfare check; one burglary; one juvenile problem; one peace disturbance; one domestic. Two dogs are now impounded. The new police vehicle has been delivered to the Ford dealer and is now having equipment installed. It should be delivered in the next few weeks. The contractor is still working on repairing a valve on filter #2
at the new water plant. Bills totalling in the amount of $36,079.05 were approved for payment. Discussion was held on the People Service Operation & Maintenance report for June. The board requested to postpone the discussion of Snyder Invoice 112.0059.11-34. Discussion to assess Well #1 by Utility Service Co. Inc. was postponed. The city’s Semi-Annual Financial Review was approved. A resolution carried appointing Julia Filley as the city prosecutor at a rate of $100 per hour. The above are the unapproved minutes of July 23. National Rodeo Reserve Champion See page Tom Crouse
Tom Crouse, a junior at Gallatin R-5 High School, competed in the National High School Rodeo Finals last week in Rock Springs, WY, winning Reserve National Champion honors in calf roping. Tom qualified for the national rodeo by winning the Missouri High School Rodeo calf roping title earlier in the year. At Nationals, Tom roped his first calf in :09.65 for 7th place in the round. He then went :10.59 on his second calf which brought him into the short round at :20.24 on two head and 4th place in the average. Tom was :08.8 on his final calf to total :20.24 on three calves, earning the reserve championship. Tom is the son of Gene and Carrie Crouse and grandson of Mary Lee Froman-Ellis, all of Gallatin; and grandson of Frances Crouse of St. Joseph.

New minister appointed to United Methodist Church Brad Dush has officially begun duties as the minister at Gallatin United Methodist Church and preached his first sermon on July 1. Brad is a 1998 graduate of Park Hills Central High School in Park Hills. He has attended classes at Mineral Area College and Jefferson College. He began preaching and filling local pulpits in October of 1995 as a lay person. He answered the call to ministry at a church camp in the summer of 1998. Brad met his wife, Christin, at the Missouri East Annual Conference of 1998; they began dating soon after and were married Dec. 18, 1999. Christin will be teaching high school math beginning this fall at Chillicothe R-2 High School. They have four children, Brit-

tany, Cameron, Andrea, and Dereck. Brittany is graduating from high school with plans to attend Mizzou in the fall. Cameron will be a junior, Andrea an eighth grader, and Dereck a sixth grader. Brad was appointed to serve his first appointment as pastor in the United Methodist Church in July of 1999. He has served churches throughout Southeast Missouri. He was not appointed to a local church from June of 2007 through December of 2010. During that time, he worked in the telecommunications industry. He returned to the local church pastorate as a bi-vocational pastor in January of 2011, serving a two-point charge and working as a licensed funeral director. Most recently Brad has served as the pastor at Marvin Chapel UMC while continuing to work at Boyer Funeral Home. Brad has always enjoyed the outdoors and loves to camp, hunt, and fish. He is also quite handy in the kitchen, always creating fun twists on well known traditional recipes. Brad also loves a good barbecue and fish fry. “I am very excited to be appointed to serve this congregation and the surrounding community,” Pastor Dush said.
Amy Schaefer from WSKF Architects out of Kansas City presented a rendition of the walkway between the elementary and middle school buildings at the July 19 meeting of the Gallatin R-5 Board of Education. Discussion of details regarding hand rail, fencing, window design, lighting, gates, logos and time-line were all addressed. “Final details are currently being implemented before the bid process,” said Gallatin Superintendent Dr. Bryan Copple. “Safety and security is a top priority at Gallatin R-5, and we want to make sure this project is completed with attention to detail.” Dr. Copple reported the following new staff members for 2018-2019: Justin Collins, middle school principal; Vicki Corwin,
bookkeeper; Dawn Creason, cook; April Fenimore, fourth grade teacher; Penny Gardner, special education; Jack Malo, band teacher; Samantha Parman, sixth grade teacher; Kelsey Peterson, third grade teacher; Ryan Rosenbaum, special education; Robin Rozell-Estenbaum, special education teacher; Nicole Thogmartin, elementary principal; and Carolynn Williams, special education aide. Shelby Dale was hired for a cook position for 2018-19. Circuit Judge Brent Elliott discussed issues that have occurred in the 43rd Circuit Division in regards to the juvenile system and different types of security suggestions. The tax rate hearing was set
for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 14, with board meeting to follow. The following 2018-2019 handbooks with revisions were approved: CDSE Student Handbook, CDSE Staff Handbook, High School Student Handbook, Gallatin Middle School Handbook and High School and Middle School Athlete/Extracurricular Handbook. Vicki Corwin was approved to have online permission for statement views, print-outs and access view with the accounts from BTC Bank. The above are the unapproved minutes of the July 19 board meeting with five members present: Tim Bradford, Pam Critten, Trent Dowell, Jeffrey Donova, and Brice Terry; Dr. Bill Irby and Amy Heldenbrand were absent.

Tire, automotive business opens Aug. 1 Grand River Tire & Automotive will officially open on Wednesday, Aug. 1. The shop is owned by two brothers from Jamesport, Richard and Marvin Kauffman. It is located at 212 West Grand in Gallatin, across from the county library. Auto service includes tires,
alignments and oil changes for all makes and models of cars, trucks and SUVs. A large inventory of new tires is in-shop or can be ordered for next day delivery. Tires will be fixed on a first come, first served basis. Prior to opening the shop, the Kauffman brothers worked in construction. This is the first
time they have had a shop, but they are not new to automotive work. Hours for Grand River Tire & Automotive are from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday. The shop is closed on Sunday. The phone number is 660-663-2147.
