Construction crew now tapping into water line for city’s new water plant

Garnett vaults to the top of Web.com money list

Ross Construction is tapping into the finish and raw water lines this week for Gallatin’s new water plant. City Administrator Tony Stonecypher noted during the Public Works Report of the city meeting held Aug. 28 that while digging out to set the new lines, the construction company came across an old eight-inch line from the water plant from the 1930’s. Unfortunately, the contractor hit a four-inch line while digging, but repairs were completed in a couple of hours. Crews worked all day on a raw water line leak at the well off of Hwy. 6. The bolts had broken off and blew a gasket. In other business at Monday’s meeting, Mr. Stonecypher informed the board he plans to order cotton high visibility safety shirts for the utility crews next year for fire safety reasons. A complaint was given regarding potholes on South Prospect, south of Hwy 13. Bethany Vandiver was appointed to the Dockery Park Board. The Chautauqua Committee plans to use the band truck. It was used for the eclipse event and only a few updates are needed before Chautauqua. Police Chief Richards’s sound system worked great. At this time there will be no wine tasting. The beer garden will still be located at 201 W. Grand. Mayor Ballew would like the utility department to have an entry in the Chautauqua parade. Laurie Walton-Roll provided a 2017 pool report including attendance, pool parties, swimming les-

Sunday turned out to be a banner day for Gallatin’s Brice Garnett, who moved to the top of the Web.com Tour money list after capturing the championship in the WinCo Foods Portland Open in North Plains, OR. Garnett, who now tops all 25 players who have earned their PGA Tour card for next season, shot rounds of 63 and 65 on Saturday and Sunday to finish with an 18-under par total of 266, which was four shots better than four other players. Gallatin’s pro golfer Brice Garnett In shooting 65 on Sunday, Garnett birdied five holes on the back nine to outpace the pack chasing him. With the win, Garnett became only the second golfer to win twice on the Web.com Tour this season. Last week’s Portland Open was the regular season finale but Garnett will start a four-event finals series this week at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship in Columbus, OH. The Web.com Tour Finals features the top 75 money winners on the regular season tour, plus players 126-200 on the PGA Tour’s FedExCup points list at the conclusion of the PGA Tour’s regular season. Garnett, by way of being one of the top 25 leading money winners from the Web.com Tour regular season, is guaranteed a PGA Tour card. If he can stay in the top money spot after the four-event finals, he will earn a fully exempt card that will qualify him for all PGA events. Another 25 PGA tour cards will be awarded to the players who earn the most cumulative money in the four finals events.

Uthes chosen as State Fair Farm Family for county Donnie and Barbara Uthe and family of Winston were among the families honored during the 59th annual Missouri Farm Family Day, Aug. 14, at the Missouri State Fair. The Uthe family was selected as the Daviess County Missouri Farm Family by the Daviess County Extension Council and local Farm Bureau. The family includes the late Donnie Uthe, his wife Barbara, son and daughter-in-law Clayton and Melinda, and grandchildren Jacob, Marissa and Elijah. Each year, the fair sets aside a day to recognize farm families from across the state who are active in their communities, involved in agriculture, and/or participate in local outreach and extension programs such as 4-H or FFA. The Uthe family operates a 225-acre cow/ calf operation. Melinda is a member of the Daviess County Extension Council and Jacob, Marissa and Elijah are all members of Daviess County 4-H.

The annual event is sponsored by five partner agencies: the Missouri Farm Bureau, the Missouri Department of Agriculture, the Missouri State Fair and Commissioners, the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, and University of Missouri Extension.

One hundred twelve of Missouri’s 114 counties were represented this year, with two counties still dealing with the aftermath of the recent flooding in southern Missouri. The event showcases the impact Missouri Farm Families have on the economy and heritage of the state.
