Scam affects 20-25 local votes In the recent general election, every county in Missouri was affected by voters who signed up on bogus voter registration sites. In Daviess County, approximately 20-25 voters were either turned away or had to cast a provisional ballot, because they had registered to vote through a bogus website. The provisional ballots were reviewed by Daviess County Clerk Ronetta Burton, but the votes could not be counted. The voter information had not been transmitted to the county in which they were to cast their votes; thus they were not actually registered. Three of the worst websites were Vote411, TurboVote, and Ballot Ready, but there are more

websites which could be listed. Many of these sites are set up to capture personal information. If you used an online voter registration website, be aware that the website captured some of your vital personal information. The only legitimate website for voter registration is the Missouri Secretary of State election page, according to Clerk Ronetta Burton. Registration information for voters who sign up on the Secretary of State’s website is automatically sent to the appropriate county the next day. Ms. Burton said that she and other county clerks only became aware of the problem on Election Day, when it was too late for any solution to be implemented.

Bright Futures and the Gallatin FBLA Chapter are teaming up to facilitate Christmas adoptions for needy school children. FBLA students will be available in the Times and Seasons building from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, during Christmas on the Square. The students will provide basic demographic information on the student to be adopted, along with the student’s small wish list. A “Bundles of Love” backpack will be provided to fill with various items. These Bundles of Love Backpacks should be brought to the Searcy Elementary building in Gallatin by Friday, Dec. 14. Parents will pick up the backpacks between Dec. 19-21. Through the Bundles of Love project, FBLA students will also collect monetary donations during Christmas on the Square. The money will be used to buy food baskets for a Christmas dinner. Dungy’s Supermarket has agreed to prepare the food baskets for the students’ families based on family size. FBLA students will help Dungy’s assemble and decorate the bundles. This year there are around 60 students in the Backpack Buddies program. Following Christmas Around the Square, students may still need “adopting.” A Christmas tree will be decorated with numbered ornaments to allow the community to adopt these children for the holidays. Each ornament will correspond to a child in the Backpack Buddies program. The tree will be located in the Daviess County Courthouse near the extension office. The Gallatin National Honor Society will again set up the “Tree of Warmth” this month in

the high school commons to collect donations of hats, gloves, and scarves. All items will be donated to Bright Futures to benefit those in need of items of warmth this winter season. Donations will be collected from Nov. 26 to Dec. 19. NHS will also hold a “Jammie Jingle” drive to collect pajamas for Children’s Mercy patients this holiday season. This service project was done in hopes that those spending their Christmas in the hospital could enjoy new Christmas Eve pajamas. The Jammie Jingle Pajama Drive will be done a little differently this year. During the Tuesday, Dec. 11, junior varsity/ varsity basketball game against Putnam County, the gate entry

Toys for Tots

In an effort to make this holiday season a little brighter for children aged newborn to 11 years, the Gallatin Police will once again facilitate the Toys for Tots program for Gallatin and Daviess County. Chief Mark Richards has delivered collection barrels in Gallatin to Shopko and Dollar General, and a donation jar to Casey’s. Anyone wishing to make a donation can drop off new, unwrapped ( co

tures at Gallatin R-5 to complete a CHAMP’S Closet project. This helped finance repainting school restrooms. Bright Futures USA, a community-based collective action group which works to fill the needs of area children, has partnered with Community Action Partnership of North Central Missouri to meet potential unmet needs for children in the Gallatin school district. The belief that each community has the ability to help every one of its children thrive is a core value of Bright Futures USA. Bright Futures Gallatin has three goals: 1) Meet the child’s basic needs within 24 hours, whether that need be lunch money or gym shoes; 2) Pull together a network of existing resources -- individuals, businesses, human service agencies, faith-based organizations, and parent groups; 3) Create an emergency fund for students and families. The Bright Futures Advisory Board decided to take on the Christmas project last year since no outside agencies were doing a formal program in the community for the past few years and various “angel tree” projects had also stopped.
