Road projects slated in county through STIP A draft of the 2019-2023 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) which lists local projects was recently presented to the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission. Across the state, this STIP annually invests in 586 lane miles of interstate pavements, 1,065 miles of major route pavements, 2,754 miles of minor route pavements and 172 bridges. Missouri has the nation’s seventh largest state highway system with 33,856 miles of roadways and 10,403 bridges but ranks 46th nationally in revenue per mile. Following a public review period, the comments will be presented to the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission. The Commission will review the comments and the final transportation program before considering it for approval at its July 11 meeting in Springfield. Projects are planned for Daviess County, which for the most part will maintain the system in the condition it is in today. The following is a list of the projects:

R-5 school walkway in final design stage; gridiron scoreboard, video touch screen added to commons Rick Kuhl of WSKF Architects out of Kansas City reviewed walkway revisions with the Gallatin R-5 School Board during their meeting June 18. The walkway is in the final design stages with minor details to discuss and a few different designs to review before it is put out for bid. The resignation for Tiffany Otto, middle school principal, was accepted. A special meeting was called on June 19 for interviewing of the position for middle

school principal and Justin Collins was hired. Superintendent Dr. Bryan Copple discussed the design of the new football scoreboard. Sponsorships of the scoreboard will be from Trenton Coca-Cola, BTC Bank, Gallatin Truck & Tractor, Landmark Manufacturing and Terry Implement. The 24x8 foot NEVCO scoreboard is in final design stages. It will go up before the first home football game on Aug. 31 when Gallatin hosts Hamilton. A dedi-

Collins new R-5 Middle School principal Justin Collins, 35, Trenton, will be the new middle school principal at Gallatin R-5. Born and raised in Garland, TX, Mr. Collins graduated from high school there. He played basketball at Missouri Western State University and received a business degree. He received his master’s degree in the fall from Northwest Missouri State University and then received a specialist in education with superintendent licensure.

Mr. Collins previously taught at Princeton R-5; was the special education teacher for grades 9-12 at Gallatin; and was principal at Gilman City. He is married to Lesli Collins. She is the women’s assistant basketball coach at North Central Missouri. They have a son due in August. “I’m really excited about returning to Gallatin as an administrator, and I thank the community for the opportunity,” Mr. Collins said.

It’s time for the county livestock show! The annual Daviess County Junior Livestock Show will be held July 5-6-7 at the Dockery Park fairgrounds in Gallatin. Katie Martin is this year’s livestock superintendent and the daily emcee. Marcia Bird is in charge of concessions at the livestock show. Alicia Chrisman is the fair board president. Last year 160 exhibitors showed 457 animals. There were 85 head of cattle, 74 head of sheep, 67 head of goats, 44 rabbits, 58 poultry and waterfowl and 129 head of swine. The following lists the 2018 county fair events: Thursday, July 5 — Swine in place at 4 p.m. for the swine show at 5 p.m. A peewee show immediately follows the champion boar drive at approximately 5:30 p.m. Friday, July 6 — Sheep in place at 9 a.m. for sheep show at 10 a.m. A peewee show immediately follows the lead line. Goats are to be in place at 12 noon for the goat show with registration at 1 p.m. The show itself will start at approximately 2 p.m. Saturday, July 7 — 9:30 a.m. rabbit show and poultry/waterfowl show; 4 p.m. beef in place for the 5 p.m. beef show with the peewee show to follow at approximately 5:30 p.m. The Invitational 4-H and FFA Livestock Show is open to all 4-H and FFA members living in any county in Missouri and enrolled in respective livestock projects, or belonging to 4-H Clubs or FFA Chapters. Points will be earned in conjunction with the Invitational Show to Daviess County only FFA and 4-H members. Admission to the livestock show is free with food concessions offered for various charges. Concessions will be open daily serving grilled pork burgers, hamburgers, pulled pork and hotdogs. Breakfast will be available on Friday morning.

A Winston woman was fatally injured in an accident that happened at about 11:42 a.m. on June 25 in Clinton County. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Margaret Welton, 61, Winston, was driving a 1998 Kia Sephia northbound on an unnamed road within Wallace State Park.
