Jon and Jessica Hann came to Daviess County bearing gifts, some they are aware of, and some they are not.

“I like a good dog,” says Jon. “But it is the underdog, the one that is messed up and needs fixed that is dear to my heart.”

Jon has trained at least 17,000 dogs at Perfection Kennels. They have recorded 160 field champions, 40 national champions, and have owners/clients that are winning somewhere at something every weekend.

Charlie and Nova, two of their personal dogs, are favorites. They started as Jessica’s dogs.

Jessica hails from New Mexico. She trained horses for a living and was out riding one day when both of her dogs were killed by a mountain lion. She got two new dogs, Nova and Charlie, but from then on she kept the dogs close, afraid to allow them to wander off.

“Jon had the patience to work with them and get them away from the horse and out in the open field,” she says. “They’ve developed into fine bird dogs.”

Charlie can find a bird anywhere, and this year Nova received the American Kennel Club Pointing Breeds Gun Dog Championship. Nova won the title out of 78 dogs.

Jon is the owner and trainer at Perfection Kennels. He has been training working bird dogs since the age of 14 when he cured his own gun-shy dog. People realized he had a knack and started sending him their problem dogs to fix. Around the same time, Jon’s uncle, Gary Brown, of Brown Funeral Home in Cameron, passed on a bird hunting tradition to Jon. The training and the hunting grew into a love of all things bird dogs.

Jon has been working with dogs now for 34 years.

He is originally from St. Joe. He bought a piece of property near the small town of Kidder but it started getting too populated.

“For what I do,” Jon laughs. “There were more houses being built, more traffic on the road. My job is to take care of the dogs, to keep them safe.”

He moved to an even more remote location off of Hwy. CC in 2005.

“I may be a little antisocial,” he says.

“That may be why I’m good with dogs. I’m learning to like people more.”

Jessica has been his wife and partner since 2012. She brought her trail horses to go with

the program. Jessica’s background in training horses made the switch to training dogs very easy.

“The biggest difference is the dogs are predator and the horses are prey animals,” she says. “But the basic training was an easy transition.”

The Hanns train dogs of all breeds and all disciplines for the field trial world, retrieving stakes, amateur, open, walking and horseback.

Jon defines field trials this way: “The ability of a dog to find wild game bird in a natural environment and to show proper manners once he finds it — not scare the bird, not chase it out of the country, and not eat it.”

They are also trainers of dogs that don’t compete but serve as hunting companions.

They raise quail and doves on site. They go through around 400 quail a month that they shoot, clean and eat. They have 200 homing pigeons that they don’t kill, but just use to train.

There are around 35 dogs housed at any given time in the kennel. They employ two people to clean the kennels; one to assist with training; and another part-time trainer.

The dogs come from all over the U.S.A. To take a walk through the kennels at Perfection Kennels is to be greeted by 35 dogs jumping on the chain link fence and barking in deafening decibels at the prospect of Jon taking them on a little hunt.

He points at the dogs — Pointers, Weimaraners, Vizslas, Setters, Gordon Setters, German Short-Haired Pointers — and calls out their home states as he walks between the cages: “Colorado, North Dakota, South Texas, Arizona, Alaska, New York….”

Perfection Kennels is surrounded by thousands of acres of fields, pasture and timber.

“People who’ve always lived in a rural community don’t find it special,” said Jessica. “But when people from the city walk across a field and see their puppy on point for the first time, they are awed, it brings them to tears.”

The Hanns ride on an ATV and on horseback for the field trials. But they walk side by side on foot teaching techniques to the hunter.

“I’d hate to say how many miles we walk in a day,” Jon says.

Once recently, they had 14 clients in one day, averaging several miles for each.

“We’ve traveled to Alaska three times; we will be in south Texas the middle of January,” says Jon. “I feel very proud and humbled and blessed by the things we get to do and the people we get to meet.”

Buy a puppy and you get happy tail wagging, affection and devotion — and a 10-15 year commitment.

That’s true of any dog.

Specialty hunting dogs are a whole different breed of best friend, and an owner has to think about justifying the substantial cost and commitment to training.

The clientele at Perfection Kennels range from the weekend hunter to the serious field trial competitor.

Jon says, “We have very wealthy people that sign up for our clinics, and others who are spending their last dime.”

Most bird dogs these days live in cities.

“We think it’s important to bring people from all over the world to Gallatin who never knew Gallatin existed,” says Jon. “They eat at the Mexican Restaurant or stop in at Elbert’s. We show them how rural America lives. They love it. They want to buy land here.”

In return, their customers introduce Gallatin natives to whole different cultures.

“Some guy from Australia or with a New York accent has breakfast at the Corner Café and is introduced to somebody who’s never been outside of Missouri.”

They hold two clinics a month and have 10 dogs at the clinics.

“That’s 20 people who need to spend a night,” says Jon. “They help to contribute to the local economy.”

He wishes they could find accommodations for his clients somewhere around Jamesport or Gallatin. Which sounds simple enough, until you remember the rooms have to be “dog friendly.”

One of the most unique facts about Perfection Kennels is the focused effort on only training bird dogs. They don’t breed or sell started gun dogs. They don’t operate a shooting preserve or run a guided hunt service. All they do is train.

Jon has trained about every breed known to man at Perfection Kennels. He has developed his own training method which is based on Pavlov’s concepts of positive reinforcement.

“My technique is more humane and makes better sense; it’s faster and more complete,” he says. “The old style was pretty brutal.”

The Perfection Method of training does employ an electronic collar, which is a polarizing issue in the bird-dog community.

“The collar is effective and not abusive if done correctly,” Jon says. “We never use it as punishment.”

He makes each dog owner try the electric collar on their own body before putting it on the dog.

The Department of Defense uses Jon’s method to train bomb sniffing dogs. Using the old way, a soldier was tethered to the dog by a 10-foot leash. With Jon’s technique, no leash is necessary…keeping the soldier completely out of harm’s way.

Jessica has a special fondness for youngsters and gun-shy dogs.

If bird dog owners can be emotional when their dog is successful, they can be equally emotional when they are embarrassed or frustrated by their dogs.

Jessica can tell numerous horror stories of dogs she knows of being beaten, even shot when they don’t perform up to their owner’s expectations.

“Dogs become gun shy because of an improper introduction to the shotgun,” she says. “The gun goes bam and the dog learns to not like the gun or the bird. Once they have that experience they keep it. It never goes away. The dog’s minds must be reprogrammed.”

Recently they were called about a dog found abandoned at the conservation area shooting range south of Gallatin.

“We finally got it in a pen and Jon got a leash on it,” says Jessica. “We took him home and fixed him. Now he’s a beautiful bird dog.”

She tells another story of an owner so aggravated by his dog he threatened to put him down. They kept him at the kennel. They turned him into a champ. He has a new owner now and sleeps in his owner’s bed every night.

Jon and Jessica believe there is more than coincidence in how things work out between them and the dogs.

“God directs them to us,” Jon says. “It’s amazing how it all comes together.”

“Every day we make mistakes, but they are not failures at all,” says Jessica. “We fix our own mess-ups. That’s the key to a good trainer.”

Maybe once a year, a dog terrified of the gun won’t come round and has to be given up on.

Jon worked three weeks recently with a dog and couldn’t make any headway.

“It got to a point it wasn’t worth it monetarily to keep after it,” he says. He talked to the owner about his terminal dog: “Take her home. Love her. But she’ll never be a bird dog.”

The dog is now jogging with its owners and living in the house.

Perfection Kennels has gained a reputation as a world-class training facility. But it’s hard, demanding work. They will have trials and clinics every weekend starting in February, summer camp that lasts five or six weeks straight in the summer, then more trials and clinics in September. Their day starts at 6:30 in the morning and last until six at night. When they travel, they live in a trailer for about three months with 20 dogs.

None of the secrets of success will work unless you do! That’s the philosophy at Perfection Kennels.

“It’s kind of a funny story,” says Jon. “We read that on a fortune cookie, but it fits. All the instructional videos, clinics, seminars…I can teach you all I know, but none of it will work if you don’t apply it.”

Jon’s ability to train dogs is about more than commands and instructions. It’s about mutual love and respect — the easiest language in the world to understand.

“I have a strong faith and I believe God gave me these techniques to share,” Jon says.

Hunters asked to help limit spread of deadly CWD by having deer sampled Deer hunters can help limit CWD spread Properly dispose of carcasses and follow laws for deer harvested outside Missouri The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reminds deer hunters that properly disposing of carcasses of harvested deer is important in limiting the spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD).

MDC also reminds hunters who harvest deer, elk, or moose outside of Missouri and bring the animals back to follow related regulations to help limit the spread of CWD. CWD is a deadly illness for white-tailed deer and other members of the deer family, called cervids. CWD kills all deer and other cervids it infects. It has no vaccine or cure. CWD is spread from deer to deer through direct contact and through contact with soil, food, and water that have been contaminated through feces, urine, saliva – and carcasses -- of infected deer. CWD has been found in Missouri and is slowly spreading. MDC needs the help of hunters to help limit its spread.

To help avoid this exposure risk, MDC recommends the following carcass disposal methods: • Place in Trash or Landfill: The best way to prevent the spread of CWD is to place carcass remains in trash bags and dispose of them through trash collection or a permitted landfill.

• Bury on Site: If you can’t bag and place in trash or a permitted landfill, bury carcass remains at or near where the deer was harvested. Bury deep enough to prevent access by scavengers. Burial will reduce but not eliminate the risks of spreading CWD. • Leave on Site: As a last resort, leave carcass remains onsite. While this will not prevent scavengers from scattering potentially infectious parts, the remains will stay on the general area where the deer was taken. If CWD is already present on that area, it will likely remain there and not be moved to another area.

• Do Not Place in Water: It is illegal to dispose of carcasses or remains in streams, ponds, or other bodies of water.

• Do Not Burn: Only commercial incinerators reaching over 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit can generate enough heat for long

Follow laws for harvested deer and other cervids brought into MO Hunters who harvest deer, elk, or moose outside of the state and bring the animals back must report the entry into Missouri within 24 hours by calling 877-853-5665, or reporting it online at mdc.mo.gov/ carcass. The carcass must be taken to a licensed meat processor or taxidermist within 72 hours of entry.

Hunters just passing through Missouri on their way to another state are exempt from this requirement as long as they are not in Missouri for longer than 24 hours.

The reporting requirement is only for whole carcasses and carcasses that have the head and spinal column attached. Parts that do not require reporting and that are at lower risk for harboring CWD include: • meat that is cut and wrapped; bonedout-meat; • quarters or other portions of meat with no parts of the spine or head attached; • hides or capes from which excess tissue has been removed; • antlers, including those attached to skull plates; and • skulls where all muscle and brain tissue has been removed.

Free voluntary CWD testing in Missouri all season Deer harvested anywhere in state can be tested for free all season at 75 locations The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) wants deer hunters to know that it is offering free chronic-wasting-disease (CWD) sampling and testing of deer harvested anywhere in the state throughout the entire deer hunting season – Sept.

15 through Jan. 15, 2019. The sampling is voluntary and hunters can also get free test results for their deer.

Hunters can have their deer sampled at 11 select MDC offices around the state.

Hunters can also take their deer to 64 participating taxidermists and meat processors located in the 48 counties of MDC’s CWD Management Zone. (See map for CWD Management Zone counties.)

New all-online bowhunter education course available The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is now offering an all-online bowhunter education course for Missouri residents 16 year and older. The new course offers a more flexible and convenient options to become bowhunter education certified.

The online course includes videos and animations to teach bowhunter safety, archery and crossbow safety, ethics, regulations, and wildlife management.

“The bowhunter program continues to evolve and find ways to recruit new bowhunters, reactivate those who haven’t hunted in a while, and retain those who hunt today,” MDC Outreach and Education Chief Kyle Lairmore said. “The way adults are learning is ever changing. More individuals are utilizing mobile applications and online tools to educate themselves. This all-online course provides individuals the flexibility to learn at their own pace and during periods of time they choose.”

Bowhunter certification in Missouri is still voluntary, but some managed or urban hunting opportunities may require it. Other states may also require bowhunter education and will accept this Missouri online course.

The course can also be an excellent refresher course for veteran bowhunters.

Each student will receive a temporary bowhunter education certificate once they complete and pass the 60-question final exam with an 80% or higher. The fee for the allonline course is $30, which is paid directly to the online provider. Individuals 15 years or younger are still required to complete the in-person bowhunter education course to receive certification.

They must present the CWD barcode number provided at the sampling location to the participating processor as proof of sampling. Hunters may also present their unsampled deer for donation to participating processors in or near any of the 11 counties and the processor will collect a sample for testing.

“Share the Harvest is a partnership of citizens, agencies, organizations, and corporations working together to provide healthy, proteinrich meat to those who may otherwise go without,” said CFM Executive Director Brandon Butler. “Hunters across Missouri should be proud of this outstanding program.”

Hunters should contact individual processors to determine what funds are available. The cost of processing is the hunter’s responsibility when funds to help cover the full cost of processing are not available.

Hunters wishing to donate their deer from CWD-positive counties to Share the Harvest and preserve the cape of their deer for taxidermy are reminded that deer with the head removed are not eligible for donation unless a sample was collected and a sample number is provided.

Donating deer from a CWD-positive county?

Deer harvested outside of the 11 CWDpositive counties do not need to be tested for donation to Share the Harvest and may be taken to any Share the Harvest processor.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a deadly illness for white-tailed deer and other members of the deer family, called cervids. There have been no known cases of CWD infecting people, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) strongly recommends having deer tested for CWD if harvested in an area known to have cases of the disease.
