Airport Hangar, Asphalt Plant Addressed The Administrative and Utility committees of the Trenton City Council met on Tuesday night, discussing a variety of issues. Administrative Committee According to Trenton City Administrator/Utility Director Ron Urton, the administrative committee voted to recommend to the council that the north end of the airport hangar be rented to Gary Jordan at a cost of $250 per month. Jordan’s previous rental agreement, which expires this month, involved him paying for improvements to the door in exchange for rent. The committee took no action following a discussion of an ordinance concerning parking camper trailers in driveways and streets. A citizen had requested that campers be allowed to be parked in a driveway or on a street for a longer period of time than is currently allowed before being moved to a building or the rear of the property. The committee asked that the codes department develop recommendations for changes to the pool fencing ordinance and bring them back to the next meeting. Urton said some of the changes discussed include requiring a pool that is greater than two feet
deep be fenced with a fence at least four feet tall. In addition, there would need to be a self-locking, selflatching or lockable gate. Utility Committee Urton said the utility committee discussed the asphalt plant site, where a water main will need to be relocated. The committee will recommend that street department funds be used to pay for the materials needed for the relocation, with the water department to provide the labor and equipment for the project. The fiber optic project currently under way by MidStates was discussed. Urton said there has been a number of “hits” during the boring work, which is almost complete in the Lake Trenton area. Urton said that issue occurred because that area was annexed into the city and there were not good construction records available. He said the problem should be alleviated now that the work is going to move west of Highway 65, where better records are available. An update was given on water and sewer projects, with Urton saying the contractor should be done sandblasting the Iowa Boulevard water tower on Wednesday and, if the weather cooperates, painting should be done in about three weeks. He updated the committee
on a water main project that is currently under way on 17th Street, with connections being made now, and discussed preparations for the water main project related to the Missouri Department of Transportation’s upcoming paving project on Ninth Street. Urton addressed a short electrical outage last week at the Nestle plant and said the issue was due to a problem at the south substation, where an underground wire had shorted out. He said the circuits will be evaluated to see if there is a way to reduce the issue of lights blinking at the plant. Urton said the city is looking at ways to address the issue of providing electricity to the city when an anticipated outage occurs due to Northwest Electric having to shut off power at its main electric plant substation to complete a project. He said cost estimates are being developed to determine if the best scenario for the “Black Start” options would be to add a secondary connection from Northwest Electric or to run off generators during that time. Both council committees are scheduled to meet again on Tuesday, Aug. 21.
The Grand River Garden Club has announced the dates and rules of the NCM Fair flower show which will be held on Thursday, Aug. 2. All persons who want to enter flowers should bring them to the Rock Barn between the hours of 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Flower vases will be provided for all cut flowers at the registration table. Potted plants and flower arranging designs can also be entered. The public is encouraged to participate by bringing flowers for all to see and enjoy. Annuals, perennials, roses, container grown, bulbs and tubers, shrubs and vines, herbs and grasses and arrangements will be judged. Judges will rate flowers by their beauty, health, quality of flowers and eye appeal. Arrangements will be judged on the foliage, stem, flower, container and uniformity of the flowers. Entries will be able to earn a blue, red or white ribbon. In addition to ribbons, other awards to be presented include “Best of Show”, “Junior Award”, “Most Unusual Flower/Plant” , “Grand River Garden Club Member Award” and the “Betty Taul Memorial Award.” A new addition to this year’s show is a “help station.” Garden club member Judith Urich will assist youth with See Flower, Page 7
