City Tax Hearing

by Diane Lowrey R-T Editor Trenton resident Sadie Roy says she is ready for whatever happens during next week’s Missouri State Fair Queen competition at Sedalia. The Southeast Missouri State University junior-to-be will be one of 49 women from around the state seeking to become the newest representative of the state’s agriculture industry. Sadie, who will be representing the North Central Missouri Fair, feels her longtime involvement in agriculture as a member of the FFA and as an agriculture education major at Southeast has helped

prepare her to serve in the role of state fair queen. “As an ag ed major, you learn a lot about different agrelated things and I feel like I can talk about a wide variety of ag topics,” she said. “And as the state fair queen, you are an ambassador for the ag industry and you have to be able to tell its story. I enjoy talking to people, especially when it comes to agriculture, and I would like to be the face of agriculture and educate others about what an impact it has on their lives.” Sadie’s agriculture involveSee Sadie, Page 3

Local Voters Heading To Polls

Election judges have been named for the Tuesday, Aug. 7 Primary Election, which will find Grundy County voters electing the county’s presiding county commissioner and taking a stand on the controversial “right to work” legislation. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., with absentee voting taking place until 5 p.m., on Monday, Aug. 6. The only Grundy County race - and the one that will likely bring out the most local voters - is the one on the Republican ballot for Grundy County presiding commissioner. With no one filing on the Democrat ballot, the race will be decided in the primary. The contest pits incumbent Rick Hull against two challengers, Mark Moore and Phillip Ray. On the Republican ticket, there are several candidates not facing any opposition, including Grundy County Associate Judge Steve Hudson, Circuit Clerk and Ex-Officio Recorder of Deeds Becky Stanturf, County Clerk Betty Spickard and Prosecuting Attorney Carrie Lamm Clark. Tom Alley has filed as a Republican for Third Circuit presiding judge, with the incumbent, Jack Peace not seeking re-election. Republican voters will also choose among 11 candidates for U.S. senator, including Tony Monetti, Austin Petersen, Josh Hawley, Fred Ryman, Christina Smith, Kristi Nichols, Bradley Krembs, Ken Patterson, Brian G. Haag, Courtland Sykes and Peter Pfeifer. Four candidates have filed as Republicans for state auditor, including Kevin M. Roach, David Wasinger, Paul Curtman and Saundra McDowell. Those without a challenger in the primary election include incumbents Sam Graves, Sixth District U.S. representative; Dan Hegeman, 12th District state senator; and Rusty Black, Seventh District state representative. On the Democrat side, no one has filed for the county offices. Voters will have to choose between seven candidates who have filed for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Claire McCaskill. Those attempting to unseat her in the primary are Carla (Coffee) Wright, Angelica Earl, Leonard Joseph Steinman II, John Hogan, Travis Gonzalez and David Faust. Incumbent Nicole Galloway is not facing a competitor in the state auditor’s race, but three candidates, Winston Apple, Henry Robert Martin and Ed Andres will be vying for the opportunity to face Graves in the November Gen-
